Okay so there are a few things that are good...but nothing special. Lucky we caught the happy hour which is 1:30 to 3p...and we snuck out under $14. China star buffet is a really cute place and a bakersfield classic and my fiancé and I went there a lot after school for decent food for a good price. They have very nice ceilings, oddly, and cute little lights around the place and a cute sign that says "healthiest food in town." The food is not healthy and leaves you feeling kinda gross after but it's always a good time in there and the green beans are nice and crunchy and the chow mein is good and the broccoli is good and the potstickers, shrimps, donuts, and egg custard pies. My family and I were eating here on Monday and we were just sitting down with our food to eat when there was this strong smell of bleach. It was a sickening smell. We couldn't even taste our food. It wore off slightly by the time we finished eating and we were enjoying our ice cream cone when it happened again. Strong Bleach smell. The young children with us were starting to feel sick (and some of us adults). We left and our complaint fell on deaf ears. Who cleans with bleach right nest to where people are eating. I tried out this spot because my two co workers had nothing but good things to say about the food there. So I had to try this place out. My family and I came during the lunch buffet which was a good price. The inside looks like a typical Chinese buffet. It was nice and clean. First impression of the food was that they had a good variety and all of my favorites, coconut shrimp (that some places charge extra for), orange chicken, egg rolls and some sushi and many more. Besides the coconut shrimp everything else tasted okay. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. I love egg drop soup but I wasn't a fan of theirs, it tasted flavorless. The staff was super nice and friendly which I really liked. My family and might give it another shot but we're still debating. read more

The lady at the counter actually told me: "You not come back" when I refused to pay for the hot tea I was told came with the lunch. Otherwise food was only ok. The food here is really good but there are a couple of things I don't like about this place. The service there is not all that great. The Manager can be rude at times. Some of the waiters aren't that nice either. There's been times when we'll say thank you and they won't even turn and look at us. Usually after they give you the check the waiter will completely ignore you. It's like they do it in purpose to try to get you to leave. They'll leave the plates on your table and they won't refill your drink. Best time to come eat here is on the weekends and any time before 8. Usually on Mondays they'll serve you what was left over from the weekend and after 8 they'll stop cooking even though they don't close until 10. read more

I like this place. Cheap and ok service. Last time i was there the Fried food section was old and you could taste it was old. The waiter asked me if I wanted more water and brought me a dirfy cup half filled with water. I didnt' drink that. I had gone today. I had paid the waitress as everyone does. I had accidentally taken out some of my money as I was taking out some Tylenol. I had gotten up to use the restroom, half-ways to the restroom, I remembered I had forgotten to put my money and my Tylenol container away. Cold food. Awkward service. There were 3 of us, we each got a small portion sized plate with no more than 2 items from their variety of food. We wanted to leave because of how bad it actually was. I got sick off the food which I knew I would once I left the place. The food is bad, not worth it

Closing time was 10:00pm on a Friday evening. We arrived around 9:15. Most of the food items were extremely low in quantity but we served ourselves anyway. Around 9:40 I proceeded to get ice cream for dessert. The machine had already been emptied and cleaned out. I mentioned it to the waiter who said it was near closing time so it had been emptied. "Sorry". Then the waiter and another waitress proceeded to sweep with brooms and dustpans under all the tables, continuously banging the broom against the dust pan while we ate. Rude and annoying. While the food items were OK, the service was poor. It wasn't until we were handed the check and ready to leave that the waiter asked if I needed a refill on my beverage. I told the cashier about the ice cream machine and the sweeping of floors while customers were still eating. Again, "Sorry". I told her "You close at 10:00. That means all food items should be available until 10:00. After all, I'm paying full price therefore everything should be available. And the sweeping while customers are eating is rude. Seems you don't close at 10:00, but rather, you intend to be out of here at 10:00. I said "We won't be back". All I can say is the food is ok, service is poor and by all means get there at least 2 hours before their so called closing time. read more

When i was pregnant, about a year and a half ago, my whole family went there to eat. My son who was 9 at the time didnt ear much jist a slice of pizza and maybe some salad, within minutes of eating he got up and puked down the hallway. Instant sickness. I thought it was just a fluke cause he has a bad gag reflex, being pregnant i ate alot of food, but felt sick too. Thought maybe it was just a bad day but my husband was really upset, he wouldnt eat much cause he said the food looked old and he didnt want to get sick. When i told the manager about us feeling sick they said no refunds. I said well can you at least refund what my son ate cause he only ate one slice of pizza that isnt worth the 8 or 10 dollars we paid for him to eat and she got really rude and grabbed her phone as if she was going to call the police, all because we wanted a refund. She gave us a 10 percent discount and said that it wasnt their fault we got sick. We will never eat there again. When i got home I puked for two hours straight, it was horrible. read more

This place is the worst buffet I have ever been to in Bakersfield, we went on a Sunday since my husband likes oysters and the last time we went was five years ago so I wanted to check it out. We were seated quickly got our drinks, the lemonade was super sweet so I mixed it with my husbands iced tea then we served ourselves, the selection is varied including american and the usual americanized chinese fare and some sushi which is what I tried first now I never expect great sushi at buffets but every other one I had previously gone to had decent sushi,at this place the sushi was mostly stuffed with canned tuna... wtf? I tried all the options and was not pleased. The rest of the food was very bland and tasteless, I did like their coconut shrimp, eggrolls, and potstickers, the whole hour we were there the oysters were brought out once and quickly disappeared because they only brought out like ten my husband only got 4 and the oyster were mediocre compared to the huge ones I have seen at other buffets, to top it all off they charged me almost $6 for my 3yr. old daughter who only ate a slice of pizza... ridiculous. Visited today with my wife and 2 kids. We ordered 1 To go and 1 dine in. My wife made her to go box and went back to the table. I was making my plate and right when I went to my wife, one of their Employee came and started telling me wife in such a rude way that you can not refill your box if you eat here. We were in a state of shock cuz she was being so loud that everybody started looking at us. We did not even eat a single bite and left the table. We went to the cash counter and asked for a refund and one other staff came in claiming that she is a manager and there is no refund and we can do whatever but she will not do a refund and then she started telling us go call the police I don't care. I wish I would give you a 0 star but google does not allow us. We got our refund back through our bank, thanks to Wells Fargo for their quick action but this is crazy. I have never in my life witnessed a customer service behavior like that. I hope no one ever goes thru this trauma read more

HORRIBLE experience. Food was not ready only had some fruit and rice. After they sat us down it took the waiter 15 min to get our drinks. He never came to ask if everything was ok or if we needed something. Food was salty once it was put out. We waited 20 minutes for the tab and I got up and paid at front desk because it took so long. Then cashier didn't tell him we paid as we are leaving he accuses us of not paying and runs to stop us. At this point I'm very upset ask to talk to a manager and cashier said she is busy and I tell her call her before I do.
