Been here only two times .. The first time I LOVED It. The second time is where everything changed. The food tasted old & it was too greasy (I get it we were at a buffet but literally tasted like the food was dipped in oil) the sodas were horrible ( how can it taste horrible you may ask?) it tasted like dirt. Definitely a fan of this place. I bought a house out here in bakersfield so I'm here every weekend and except for maybe two times I've come here every sunday for the past three months or so. They have a variety of food from pizza, ribs, fried shrimp, teriyaki chicken, sushi, crab legs as well as a salad bar and desserts. I think the food is great and its priced well. Party of four comes out to about 46 bux I believe. They have waiters going around to take your empty plates away and they are very attentive to refilling your drink when your almost done with it. I want to give China Star higher reviews, but after about 10 visits, I've had more 2-star visits than 4-star, and never a 5-star. Good things on the menu: Sesame Chicken - great flavor. Fried everything - unhealthy, but yum. Sushi - surprisingly good. could use more variety. Wonton Soup - Might be the best in town? Foil wrapped chicken. Bad things on the menu: Everything else. I'm not kidding here, there are some glaringly bad food items on that buffet. I've gone for lunch and dinner hours, and found old items that were obviously long overdue for replacing. I've seen chines pork ribs on the buffet that were crusty from sitting so long. I've seen chow mein noodles that were stiff and stale from age. My advice is to get smaller buffet food bins, and refresh the items more often. We don't need a 20lb bucket of orange chicken. It will save the restaurant money by eliminating all the waste, and they could put that money into better ingredients. Look at the other reviews, China Star. Lots of other people think you leave your food out too long. read more

I will review this place just like I knew I had arrived at a AYCE buffet, and not a fine dining experience. The food was good about mid day on a Sunday, and there was a good variety. We had a decent meal here and service was OK. It wasn't exactly the 626, but godamn, we are in 661. The food looks fresh and delicious. As far as taste goes, the only complaint I have is the chow mein. It was cold and I didn't like the texture. Everything else was fresh compared to most china buffets I've been to. Oh and I need to comment on the chicken wrapped in foil. It was flavorful but I don't think it was chicken. I think I would call it a "meat" wrap because it was definately meat. It was good but I was afraid to eat it because I don't know what it was. The fact that I call it "meat" makes me think of dog food because the lower grade stuff lists "meat" rather than specifying "chicken", "beef", or "lamb". Or how about "mystery meat wrapped in foil". My boyfriend and I have come here for 4 years, and we love it! Everyone is really nice and we always get greated very kindly. Oh and the food is amazing! We always get crab legs and mussels. Try both with their warm melted butter and season with salt and pepper, DELICIOUS!!! No other place beats their buffet, perfect selection of Chinese food. $10 is a steal! read more

I had an internship in Bakersfield this past summer, and my co-workers and I would always go there for its happy hour. Sometimes we had to wait (5 min ish) to be seated during the happy hour because the deal was so good. The food during happy hour is always fresh and the servers are very nice. Went last week (June 2020) and they made us pay upfront instead of at the end of our meal like usual. I thought it was odd but didn't question it. Well when we went to get our food they had only about two of their food lines open, compared to their usual 7....there was hardly anything at all! The only dessert they had was mushy and wet, and it's not usually that way and tasted of perfume. I wish they would have disclosed that they didn't have a full menu. It was so lame. HEALTH DEPARTMENT Please Check This Place Out!!! I walked into the China Star Buffet to eat an early Tuesday evening dinner with my son. The first thing I noticed was that an adult woman was working the cashier machine while her underage children or grandchildren were playing the role of waiter/ticket collector....CHILD LABOR LAWS!!!! Since it was a buffet, we grabbed two plates and piled up the usual amount of Chinese food. The food was only fair and the egg rolls had something gooey in them, but no meat or vegetables. And, disgustingly, the vents reeked of air freshener that was masking visible black mold which triggered my allergies. I blew my nose over and over and I finally moved to another table because we were sitting under one of the vents. As I sat down at the adjacent table, I noticed that many of the vents were over the food. I wanted to leave at this point, but I did not want to ruin the meal for my son. But as I began to pick at my food, I noticed that my son was not eating. He said that the older child delivered the wrong glass of water to our table. This made my son lose his appetite. That was it for me, no seconds at the buffet. We got our check and walked to the cashier to pay. She took our money and then announced that the young boys had given us the wrong check. I gave the boys a $5 tip, paid the cashier the correct amount, left the restaurant, and rapidly drove to Jack and the Box next door and ordered my son some clean water. If I had been the HEALTH DEPARTMENT OR CHILD PROTECTION, I would have shut the doors on this place immediately,....and think, I did not even go into the kitchen scary as that thought is. I do not recommend this place. HEALTH DEPARTMENT, you must have missed this one. Go! I am at home hoping that this place isn't going to give me and my son a gift that keeps on giving, if you know what I mean. No China Star or any other kind of stars. read more

The worst buffet i have ever been to. Dirty tables and sticky chairs. The bathroom was the worst. The food was not even ok , limited items and a mediocre sushi bar. The hot items were mostly flavorless disgusting over cooked veggies. Price would be cheap if they had decent food items to offer. We had to take napkins from other tables since our waitress only came once to pick up dirty plates, and kept looking at us because they were still full. She didnt offer refills on our drinks. One waitress for 12 plus tables. The cashier was rude when i told her we didnt have the extra drinks we were charged for and spoked in her language in avery sarcastic tone. Ive been here a couple of other times and the food is ok, like most buffets some things are great and some just ok. The customer service leaves something to be desired though. The servers all seem to congregate by certain tables and if you have been seated there it is kind of awkward, not to mention it seems to be the gossip place for them and having a conversation at the table is difficult. The ladies that work the register are sometimes nice and sometimes bordering on rude. Pretty much everything about this place is hit and miss, sometimes good service, sometimes not, sometimes good food, sometimes not. My complaint s the last time I attempted to eat here I came in about an hour, hour and fifteen minutes before they closed. They informed me that only a few dishes were filled and they had no plans to make any more....oookkkkkaaayy. I said fine but if we dont get the full buffet offering are you going to charge full price? Of course they were. We left and ate elsewhere. Went on a sat afternoon and I believe the owners children where working. Looked like their ages ranged from 6-11 idk. But I only got 1 refill from my beverage because the kid waiter only came around twice. Once for the first round of drinks and the second time to give us our tab. 20% of the food that tasted fresh was delicious but for the other 80% of the food, it seemed like it was old and chewy.
