China Station Restaurant, Mariposa: 2025 Sep 12 (2.15 of 5) I had a yearning for some Chinese food and decided to call for take-away from this restaurant. Since I couldn't get anyone on the phone, I decided to stop here on my way home. While I was ordering my food, a call came in. I picked up the call and it was from the restaurant owner apologizing that he'd missed my call. That's a 5 in my book. (5 of 5) My orders were Beef Chow Fun and Chicken Chow Mein. The lady who took my order was busy looking at her phone, and I had to repeat my order three times. (1 of 5) She finally acknowledged me and proceeded to take my orders to the kitchen. While I was waiting, I asked her if I could take some pictures of the establishment. She said it was fine. It didn't take long for my order to be ready. My orders came out piping hot and I was eager to dig into my food. Unfortunately, the orders were incorrect. Instead of Beef Chow Fun and Chicken Chow Mein, the meat in each box was reversed. (1 of 5) Both boxes of noodles looked pale. I may not be a Chinese food connoisseur, but my sense and smell are acute. I felt that the Chow Mein was cooked in 'old' oil. Both items were bland, but at least the onions were cooked well, leaving a crunch and not raw, plus the beef and chicken pieces were tender. I was informed that the chef is from Chengdu, China. Chengdu, a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, is the heart of Sichuan cuisine, known for its bold and spicy flavour. It is sad that I did not experience Chengdu cuisine flavour in my orders. Location & Parking: This restaurant is in a convenient shopping corner - with a couple of other restaurants, a local market and several other offices. Parking is easy and free. Atmosphere: A handsome folding screen greets you at the entrance. Once you walk past the folding screen, the place opens up to reveal large round tables, each with a lazy susan (rotating tray) in the middle. The chairs were polished wood. The tables and chairs are spaced far enough apart for privacy. The carpet looked worn. (Overall, a 2.75 of 5) Because there were only 3 patrons seated during the lunch hour (not a good sign), I walked around - checking out their display. I thought the bicycle was a cute display... then I walked to my left, and stared at the bear on the wall. The idea of displaying a bear on restaurant walls is a disgrace and is disrespectful to the creature. I don't think I could ever eat in a restaurant that shows no respect for the display. (1 of 5) It is a shame my first experience here turned me off this eatery. There really aren't any good Chinese eateries within 25 miles of the Ahwahnee-Mariposa area. The next day, I refried my Chow Fun over high heat, giving it a lovely 'wok hey'. The smoky and charred aroma added flavour that was missing. Food was ok. Soup was on point. Hot, just how I like it. Chow mein was good. A good Chinese restaurant must always have "wok hei" the food comes out hot. They did. They also served thai curry... but it was def. Not up to par. Frfr. What is even more off turning is the gratuity charge. They charged 15% on your bill off your total. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the food is actually really solid and tastes pretty authentic -- like, this is the real deal, proper flavor. Out of town family were craving Chinese Food and went here to get takeout. Food was either over cooked or under cooked. As per status quo with the establishment, food has not improved. Stopped by here to get dinner take out on the way to our hotel..I wish i read the reviews before going to this place. Found this place en route to our Airbnb on day one at Yosemite. We were tired after a long car ride and brief first day at the park. As always, we looked up the yelp reviews and decided to give this place a shot based on the reviews from the past 3-4 months. The gentleman who took my order was helpful and the order was ready in about 20 minutes. The food was okay. It wasn't terrible but it was not outstanding either. A little pricey for what they offered and there is room for improvement. Adding more spices and seasonings would give the food more of a wow factor. Had thai curry, while quantity is great, taste isn't. Thai curry has too many veggies and doesn't taste like it is made with coconut milk. Also thai green curry doesn't really look green. We had a hard time finding good vegan options in the area. Out of desperation we tried China Station. We got the veggie fried rice, the steamed Napa in garlic sauce, the veggie chow mein, and the curry fresh vegetables. After a long day of hiking in Yosemite, the food was so adequately delicious that I inhaled a lot of it that night. The downside was, stepping back... the fried rice did not have that wok hei taste, the chow mein had very little vegetables or flavor, and the curry had chicken. :( Even though the curry was listed in the vegetables section and i double checked my receipt. Unfortunately we only found out after we got home and past 8:30 closing time. Finally, they didn't serve us a side of white rice, as is supposed to be standard at every Chinese restaurant. @locals: I know we've had a rough time with China Station in the past -- I'd not eaten here in over 5 years. But I heard a recent rumor that something changed dramatically for the better (unsure if it was new owners, new staff, new cooks, or what) and that I should give them another chance. I ordered 4 takeout dishes, and I was seriously IMPRESSED! Not only was the gentleman who took my order very sweet and attentive, but the food came out quickly. The flavor was balanced and tasty in every dish (no longer over-greasy and over-salted), it was all still steaming by the time I got home, and all of the vegetables were cooked perfectly! After a day in the Yosemite Valley we ended our night for some good chinese food. We ordered the House Spareribs, Sauteed Bokchoy in garlic sauce, Walnut Prawns with Egg flower soup. Everything was bomb! Very happy with the service. We were worried at first because when we walked in there was only 5 people eating and many tables are empty but Im glad we came here and we absolutely had a good dinner. If you're from anywhere with decent Chinese food, this place is the Walmart version of the worst place you've tried BUT at premium prices. After looking at the reviews, I wasn't sure about this place but my family was really in the mood for Chinese so we gave it a try...I'm so glad we did! I used to like China Station as a child, but went roughly 20 years before I tried it again last night (2019). I wanted to like it - I really did. But the entire experience was negative. I will never go back. We were one of three parties in the whole restaurant, yet the service was sub-par. We were ready to order roughly 10-15 minutes before the (lone) waiter tended to us. We ordered a dinner special that came with things like chow mein, beef&brocolli, paper chicken, sweet-and-sour chicken, and fried shrimp. Everything - even the wonton soup - was horribly oversalted. There are no authentic Chinese flavors at all; it's just an overload of grease and salt. Salt especially. I could practically feel my kidneys and heart clenching for support. The fried shrimp was literally just one shrimp, roughly the size of my pinkie. I finished it in two bites. The sweet and sour chicken was plentiful but wayyy too rich, and a bit rubbery. Maybe 20 tables in that open room restaurant, one table had two people, another table had one person, there was one person for takeout, and then the three of us showed up and seated ourselves. It took 40 minutes before we even got a plate of chow mein, and it took another 15 minutes before we got our three plates that we ordered. There was a family with children that showed up right after us and they ended up leaving because it was taken too long. There was also another customer who ordered takeout and he left before he got his order, I'm not sure how long he waited. There was also a very loud argument coming from the kitchen a couple times, although I wasn't sure what they were saying. We left after we ate, a total of 1 hour 15 minutes later, there was only one single customer in that place when we left, the same lady who was there when we got there. Went here and ordered steam white rice, vegetable lo mein, stir fry green beans, sesame chicken, vegetable mushu and kung pao chicken. First let me say we had to pay an extra $2.50 for the rice (which is usually free when ordering), which they never gave to us on our to go order. Also, they didn't put in the plum sauce or wraps for the mushu. Didn't notice until we drove 25 minutes back to the house. Second, ALL of the food we ordered was tasteless and bland. They didn't even put in packets of soy sauce or hot mustard, nor did they ask if we wanted any. The counter guy seemed disinterested and unfriendly, felt like we were bothering him giving the order. We stopped here on the way home from Yosemite, and were surprised by how beautiful it was inside with gorgeous tables, and a really interesting display on the wall with the bear and salmon. Another wonderful surprise was how delicious the food was and how quickly it came out. we got the Szechuan chicken, fried rice, wonton soup, house special chow mein, and spicy calamari. China Station is the best Chinese restaurant between Merced and the Yosemite Lodge Food Cafeteria. Now before you go out and make a reservation please read the full review. We are on our way to Yosemite, and after 4 hours of driving, need a place to grab some grub in Mariposa, an hours drive from Yosemite Valley. On the very edge of town, we see an overhead sign next to a shopping center, with China Station right at the top. Chinese food in Mariposa? There is a young attractive Asian lady standing outside the restaurant. As soon as we come near by, she catches our eye contact, and beckons us with body language into the restaurant. Turns out this is the wife of the proprietor, and inside are her elementary school age children busy with homework. The kids are dressed head to toe in heavy clothing and jackets. And no wonder, as it is like a meat locker inside the cavernous restaurant. There is one customer there, and he says that everyone uses propane to heat up their places here in Mariposa, and it would cost a fortune to keep this huge restaurant heated up, OK, the place is not so hot, temperature wise, but can the food be hot? I ask him what he orders here, and he says his wife and other folks order the Kung Pao Chicken, but he likes the sweet and sour pork -not my favorite. I ask the attractive young Asian lady what to order, and she abstains in heavily accented English. We order the $8.60 Kung Pao Chicken and a safe dish , the $7.60 pot stickers, something that no Chinese restaurant can get wrong. Service is attentive and very prompt, so by the time my wife gets another overcoat from the car, the meal is here. The pot stickers are to die for: hand made that morning, not frozen, not too stiff, browned just right, and cooked just enough so that the pinkness of the pork is gone. Superb, although $7.60 for six is a bit pricey. The kung pao chicken arrives, and my first impression is that they gave us the wrong dish, a vegetable dish full of cooked celery, with peanuts sprinkled on top. The chicken is hiding underneath. The kung pao chicken tastes like the cook added tablespoons instead of teaspoons of salt, it is that salty. Not a dish for those with a low salt diet and high blood pressure. No wonder the place is half empty, as the old time customers have all passed away from this high salt dish! Apparently this place caters to bus tour groups of 40+ at a time. And now we know why one group of Chinese speaking tourists by passed this place and went over to Subways up the block. In the corner is a stuffed bobcat and stuffed bear. No wonder that kung pao chicken was salted so heavily -that thawed out frozen meat may not have come from a chicken!
