6.5/10 I tried China Stix after seeing it come up a few times when I searched for the best Chinese food in Texas, so I decided to drive a bit out of my way to check it out. Honestly, I would describe it as a lesser version of Panda Express. The combo plate was about $20, which felt pretty steep for what you get. My orange chicken portion was extremely small, I only got about five pieces. For that price, that was pretty disappointing. The beef and broccoli was decent, but not nearly as good as Panda Express. The vegetable spring roll and the General Tso's spicy chicken were not good at all. The chow mein was the only part of the meal that stood out. I'd say the chow mein was good, maybe even a tie with Panda Express, but that was really the only highlight. The food overall wasn't terrible, but considering the price and the extra drive, it just wasn't worth it. I could have gone to my local Panda Express, gotten a much bigger portion, and paid about half the price. For me, that makes it hard to justify coming back. read more

Horrible place! Always order 2,3,4, even 6 orders to go of their shrimp w/lobster sauce which was always so good until tonight. Placed order to go for 2 shrimp/lobster sauce entrees & both were so over salted we couldn't eat. It was so over salted like it was deliberately done. There is no way you can just over salt 2 dishes like that. No way we could salvage it. It was a complete throw away of over $36. Do not come here! There is a time and place for everything, even Americanized Chinese food. I fully recognize that I'm not the target audience for this, I still can't get over how mediocre my meal was. TL;DR: This it not my bag. (#1) Situated in the Vanderbilt Square strip along Holcombe, China Stix is one of West U's only options for Americanized Chinese food. It's easy to compare all the legit Chinese options just a stone's throw away down the road (#2), but there are some some days for some folks where general tso's and sesame chicken just sound that much more appealing. I ordered, in Spanish (#3), and got a cornucopia of items from general tso's with side of egg drop soup, some sesame chicken, lemon chicken with fried rice, and a little beef and broccoli finished off with a slew of fortune cookies. I also threw in some beef and broccoli, kung pao chicken, chicken lo mein, and some thick egg rolls and hot and sour soup. Despite the serious variety, it was all a wash. The food was pretty horrendous. The general tso's was either too mushy or too tough, the lemon chicken and to some extent, the sesame chicken was extra thick with the sauce and was too overbearing. The lo mein was bland all throughout and the beef with broccoli tasted very off. The fried rice was also a miss and the egg drop soup was almost too cornstarchy to swallow down. Even the fortune cookies were stale. The service was the only winner for me and I learned they're popular destination for folks looking for a reasonably priced lunch. While I would likely never come back for more, I'm glad they serve as an option for people who would. TLDR: Awesome eatery! Very fast, economical, and tasty! I order China Stix about 2-3 times per month. I usually order online because they are very fast (the food is ready in ~5 minutes from calling ) and I think the portion sizes are slightly larger. The food is very tasty too! I usually go for the sweet & sour soup with either Kung Pao chicken or Mongolian beef. You can't go wrong with either of those! Featured below is the orange chicken (which in full disclosure wasn't my favorite since it was very "saucy", so I'll stick to my usuals next time). As I said above, I love the convenience of ordering online, but the store has a charming ambiance! There's a sleek modern feel to it and the chairs are fairly comfortable. Everything was fresh and hot however I've had better versions of hunan chicken with more flavor. The hot and sour soup was good, just wish it had more tofu. The fried egg roll and cream cheese wonton were decent - nothing special. For some reason, they were blasting explicit rap music inside the restaurant which isn't my go to choice when trying to enjoy a meal. It was scheduled to be delivered at 11:35am and despite multiple calls to the restaurant for answers as to why we had not received our lunch at noon, 12:30, 1:00pm and then 1:30pm, we were supposed to accept their weak excuse that they "had a lot of orders" that day. We asked for a refund to make it right since they were soooooo delayed in their delivery. The manager said they would cancel the order and refund my friend. They didn't even try to make it right by delivering the severely delayed food so we had something to eat. They weren't about to provide the food that was paid for, NOT delivered and not get paid for it! If I could give this restaurant a 0 stars I would. Very terrible service and very terrible management. This is like one of those comfort food places for me, not something traditional, but something that's just usually pretty easy to eat. Don't expect amazing quality here, but for the price, you really can't beat the taste and the good portion sizes. I wanna say that I've eaten at this place before and generally it has been decent at the very least and even really good at times. and before I review the food I also will say that the staff people I dealt with were very very nice. Having said that, I was craving Chinese food and so went into China sticks to get Hunan beef. I ordered the dinner combo, and there was a time when a dinner combo was quite a bit of food. Actually at some Chinese restaurants it is still a considerable amount of take out food. but tonight the order of food which I paid full price for was about the size of a lunch combo if that. The soup came in a bowl that was about the size of what some send you home with with their sauces so in other words it wasn't even a cup of soup or even 1/2 cup of soup I would venture to say it was about 1/4 cup of soup. But I was there for the Hunan Beef right, so I told my niece who had not had it to try my Hunan beef and we both took bites and it was nice and hot and the flavor was okay and I'm saying this is nice and tender and she's like I can't even chew mine. I said what do you mean this is supposed to be very tender meat you must have got a bad piece... she says what's a bad piece... I thought about that and I thought, You're right what would be a bad piece... I don't know grizzle maybe. Now I'm a person who lives in the positive realm and I operate in positivity so I don't always look for the negative, I look for the positive in everything so I said I don't know how you got a grisly piece but come try another piece Hunan beef is really good, and as she takes a second bite, I go to take my second bite and I stuck my fork into the pile of food and out came ...I'm not sure what it was. it looked kind of shiny it was very long it was not beef, and it wasn't chicken unless it was that weird part of the chicken that has like a silvery shiny thing but incidentally I was eating beef! So that along with the grizzly bite literally completely turned me off from eating the rest of it. And then I went ahead and I was going to sip on the quarter cup of soup and I opened the lid and took a sip directly out of the container and it was congealed and it literally came across just like a giant lump of fat. so I rarely give bad reviews but my budget doesn't allow for me to eat out very often, then the fact that there was so much going on in so little time over such a small portion of food... yes it was an absolute turn off and well my stomach is actually reacting as I'm writing this because this was just all 15 minutes ago needless to say I won't be eating there again ever.
