This is the "New" China Villa. I've had food in the restaurant a few times since they got new owners and the food is great - not too greasy or salty and the vegetables fresh and cooked perfect. I'm astounded by the positive reviews this place has. Ordered take out from here just a few days ago (hot and sour soup, veg chow mein, veg potstickers and roast pork) and it was all awful. The soup was overly sour, the pot stickers bland, the noodles mushy, flavorless and lacking vegetables, the pork really sweet. On top of all that, its not even cheap. Came for a business lunch - OK but nothing to make me want to come back. Plusses were a huge lunch special menu with many selections of beef, chicken, pork, vegetarian and seafood with reasonable prices in the $8.50-$10 range for a lot of food. Had good service and food came quickly, too quickly in fact; we had barely gotten thru the soup when the salad came out quickly followed by the entrees. But we were one of the first couple of tables in for lunch. Hot and sour soup was good, salad of thin slices of iceberg with dressing and wonton strips (would have gladly skipped this), and entree of szechuan pork and fried rice was on the oily side and flavors were pretty non-existent; just the spice of the red pepper came through. read more

We really enjoyed our dinner here! We wandered in on an early weeknight, mostly because it was geographically desirable to two appointments we had in the nearby area, but with about 2 hours to kill in the middle. China Villa is located in the traffic-busy "hub" of San Rafael, Kentfield, & San Anselmo. After a great Indian summer, Marin was finally turning autumn chilly. Walking into this restaurant, you would wonder why it is so deserted and that maybe something was amiss. But soon you realize that the phone is ringing off the hook with phone orders - about a dozen people walked in to pick up their orders while we were there for an early dinner. Nicely appointed, we started with fried won ton skins with a delectable sauce and then promptly asked for another (and received!) Addicting and fattening, they were great and such a simple idea! We ordered the BBQ pork chow mein with fried noodles - we loved and devoured it promptly. We also had lemon chicken which was not like the traditional chinese lemon chicken, but rather a whole breast sliced and coated with the delicious lemon chicken crust (usually they are chicken tenders and the texture is more bumpy than smooth - at least in our experience). We found it good, nonetheless. The service was very polite; since we know our way around a chinese menu, they didn't have to help much, but we were delighted when they gave us more wonton skins! They also had someone there playing a stringed instrument (like a japanese koto, but not too sure what it was); he may have been practicing more than performing, but it was kind of nice for atmosphere. The price was reasonable and I'm sure we will be back. If you are looking for reasonable dining and/or good take out, this one is a good one to put on the rotation! read more

$40 for soup, fried prawns and mu shu pork!? Are you fricking kidding me?! When it arrived it was only okay, not great. My daughter loved the Chicken and Corn soup, but the Mu Shu Pork and the Fried Prawns were just average take-out Chinese. I used to pay about half this amount when we lived in San Francisco, and can still get the same for around $25 on Clement. Once again, Marin options being few, the restaurants seem to not care about return traffic, and gouge the customers. NOT a good business practice. But you know what's REALLY not a good business practice? Incorrectly charging for the meal as a whole, then making insane excuses when they get caught. Unfortunately for them, they brought me the receipt which clearly showed their free-lance math at work. Lots of charges scratched out after I called them on their mistake/mischarge. We won't be returning, I'll just bring it home with me from the City. Too bad for them, as we only live 1/4 mile away. read more

I am new to the area so I cannot comment on the Northgate China Villa/ Ming Garden move but the menu/signage/receipt all say China Villa. With that out of the way, I ordered take out from the dinner menu for the first time tonight and I was very pleased. The food was fresh, tasty , and ample in serving size. The service was friendly and my order was made with ease and was correct. I look forward to making this place my new 'Chinese take-out' destination. read more

I love China Villa. Have been coming since they were located at the old Northgate Mall. Good, tasty fresh food and I love their potstickers and dipping sauce-yummmm! Good prices too. Love th lunch time salad and soups are delicious. Again a great low-key place to go or to get takeout from. Very tasty food, sauces, soups and appetizers. Lovely relaxed atmosphere and you can sit there as long as you want and work on your computer and do reports.. Op whatever with a very relaxed family atmosphere! So Happy! Just tried this place for the first time, had food delivered and the whole experience was great. One of the few Chinese restaurants that actually delivers ($2 charge, so what, when I need a fast fix for my favorite cravings for food I know I'll never make as good at home than who cares about an extra couple dollars). I am a newbie to vegetarianism and was thrilled to see a Lemon "Vegetarian" chicken on the menu, fried battered balls of something that tastes so much like chicken I had to do a double taste. Did I say I'm in heaven! I also ordered the Vegetarian rice and was surprised by all the veges including whole broccoli florets which were fresh and still crisp, very nice. The egg flower soup was very nice too. Food came to $27. The portions are no different than any other Chinese restaurant, but I can easily get 4 meals worth. Love that they deliver, love that they think of us vegetarians, and the call was easy and smooth, food came fast (mid-Monday afternoon), and on top of it all the delivery guy was very very sweet. Edit: We decided to order via the phone for delivery, and we loved the food. The quality has improved drastically, the service is fast and friendly. We use them regularly now. The first time we got take out, the food was extremely greasy, and the containers were overflowing and all gooey on the outside. Not a fun experience to start dinner. The second time, years later, was tonight. I was in a pickle and needed delivery. I live down the street from them, 1 mile give or take. The order was quite pricey, but I figured I had no choice. I ordered the food at 7:40, and at 9:20, I got worried and called. All the woman did was giggle and say 'I cancel". Guess who is now really in a pickle for dinner. read more

Living with lousy Chinese food in Marin is one problem. Waiting an hour and a half and never getting the food delivered is another thing altogether. I waited an hour, then called the restaurant. I rarely come here because I usually go to the one on miracle mile which I've done for many years. However, when I'm in the downtown san anselmo area running errands I would grab something to go. I usually order the eggplant and basil with rice. The eggplant is a bit greasy do I don't always order it. The staff is courtesy and no complains. There is parking behind the building but parking is fairly easy on the street too. They are next to the theater so it's is convenient. They raised the prices significantly and for the quality and I don't think I would come back often. read more

This is our favorite Chinese restaurant in Marin. The food is very good and the service is courteous. Our favorite menu item is the China Villa prawns. They also have excellent hot & sour soup (vegetarian option) and chow mien noodles. Their shrimp fried rice leaves a bit to be desired as they skimp on shrimp. Overall, we really enjoy the food. We do take-out most of the time, have used delivery fairly regularly and often dine in for lunch. Lunch is a great value as you can enjoy their soup, salad and an entree for around $10 per person. I often am un satisfied with Chinese food because many restaurants add too much salt and other additives that often leave my tummy gurgling. I was told by a local friend that they had good chinese food. So I stopped in on the account that is was about 90 degrees and did not feel like heating up my lack of air conditioned apartment. I walked in looked at a very extensive menu and ordered the sweet and sour chicken with the hopes I could convince my non-chinese food eating boyfriend. I figured that sweet and sour chicken is the Chinese equivalent of chicken nuggets and ketchup. My favorite part of this version of "chinese chicken nuggets" is that the meat was juicy and tender on the inside and also seemed to be all white meat. Also the chicken came with peices of sauteed onion, bell pepper, and best of all pineapple. The menu is literally endless and there are so many things I want to try. For $10 + tax I got 2 fortune cookies, 1 pack of soy sauce, and a large take out container of chicken/veg/fruit, accompanied with a side of fuschia sweet and sour sauce (all naturale, I would imagine). i am from Indianapolis, at home that would have cost under $10 and would've come with rice. I need to try more local Marin Chinese Restaurants and compare price/values. One bonus of this place is that it delivers, a $2 fee with a minimum of $20. Tried China Villa for the first time tonight. Very nice, tasteful decor. Quiet late on a weeknight. The waitress was lovely -- very sweet. I had: fried eggplant appetizer (delicious light tempura batter); sesame chicken (same light batter with a sweet, slightly spicy sauce); and the house special fried rice (prawns, chicken, mystery meat, I mean, hamburger, I think). All were very tasty, although I think the only one I'd order again is the eggplant. I'll definitely go back. I grew up on this place. I cannot count the number of times I have been here, and every time I go back it is just as good as it was the last time. I definitely make it here anytime I am in the area. Yes it is a bit pricey, but it is definitely high quality food, not your typical, run of the mill Chinese restaurant. Go for lunch during the week, you get quite a bit for your money, soup, salad bar, entree and rice all for under 10 bucks. I seriously crave this place when I'm away for a while, like now. Went here after a hike at Mt. Tamalpais back in November 2007. Service was awesome for a big hiking group. We were all starving! Food was great. We just ordered a bunch of dishes and had shared in plates. We just couldn't walk after eating because we were stuffed! I do recommend this small Chinese place. It's a found treasure. read more

The inside of this restaurant is a lot nicer than the outside of the building suggests, they actually have very nice Chinese decor inside. Good feng shui! This is a nice for a casual to moderate business lunch or romantic dine. I recommend the sesame chicken which is fried and breaded and served with a generous topping of sesame seeds. I like the way it's spiced, too. I believe a couple owns it and the lady is the the waitress and he's the cook. Very sweet lady. Their daughter plays live Chinese music there sometimes (maybe mostly on the weekends). I think this is a popular place with San Anselmo locals for a quick seated lunch (entree, steamed or fried rice, and a small soup and salad combo) and at an off lunch hour (after 1pm?) the place is often totally quiet. A good place to relax then. I believe they also do takeout. read more

Ming's is now called China Villa. Same location, same food, just a different name. The food is fantastic here! The service is so friendly! We are always waited on by Ken, who is very polite and friendly. The food is never greasy like most Chinese, and the prices are great. The restaurant is very clean. Some of my favorites are the Vegetarian Pot Stickers, Egg Fu Yung, Egg Flower soup, vegetable Chow Mein and the Three Greens with garlic sauce (I'm a vegetarian). My boyfriend tries something new everytime, and he loves the steamed mussels, the seafood sizzling platter (not sure of the name, but it's one of their specialties--it has scallops and shrimp...), lemon chicken and sweet and sour chicken. We try to visit once a week, because these are the kind of people you want to give your business to. And you leave not feeling stuffed or like you ate bad food. Friendly, very tasty, affordable. I ordered the generals chicken, snow pea prawns, Kung Pao and some pot stickers. The chicken was just crispy enough and glazed perfectly. The prawns were also cooked just tender enough to leave them in that delicious "buttery" taste and texture state of being.The food was definitely some of the best Chinese food I've had in Marin county and very reasonably priced. We gave china villa a try because they were on the eat 24 app. The food was mediocre and the delivery was slow, so obviously the food was cold also. The kicker was that the entrees did not include rice. Really, no rice. I called them because I thought it must be a mistake. To my surprise it wasn't. I was hopeful but this is our second time order delivery and this time was worse than the last-the chicken and snow peas was just dreadful-overcook mushy snow pea's-usually snow peas are crisp and flavorful. Went here on a Friday night and the place was completely empty. Nobody was around even the owners. They finally came out from a dark room in the back. We ordered appetizers and a main dish. Shu Mai came out completely raw and made them take it back. Ordered BBQ pork and got cold pork buns instead. I can't believe this place stays in business. Very surprised, we've ordered from them for years. But today's order was really bad, almost inedible! The sweet and sour chicken consisted of infinitesimal chunks of chicken in HUGE amounts of batter (less than 10% chicken) and was tough to even chew, and the pork fried rice was dry tasting with a really bad after-taste. My bf and I had this craving of soft eggs with beef over rice we had from sea garden in Seattle and was calling around all the chinese restaurant around Marin see if any of places has them and we were asking around and no one seem to understand what it is and keep on asking us if we are talking about egg foo young or wonton soup and we were very frustrating and finally found what it called in Chinese (watan oyok fan i think) and this really friendly lady from china villa was willing to make it for us eventho it wasn't on their menu and it was twenty mins before their closing time and delivered us within 15-20 mins!!!!! Sorry, but the worst Chinese Food I have ever had. The fried rices (shrimp and pork) were dry and flavorless. I mistakenly ordered crispy chow mein noodles that came with a soup-like chicken and vegetable sauce in a container instead of the usual soft noodles I get when I ordered chinese. Once again, other than a chicken-broth type taste, nothing all that extraordinary. An order of cashew chicken also resulted in getting a very similar, almost indistinguishable sauce like that on the chow mein. You now it's bad when I'm not even going to save and eat leftover fried rice. There is no amount of soy sauce that will fix it. read more

Used to come here a lot but hadn't been back for a few years as the food had gone downhill - so was very excited to see all the great reviews for the new owners/chef. Unfortunately for us we didn't get 5-star food or service. Service: we had been out running errands all day and, very hungry, decided to come right here instead of going home first - so we arrived a little before 5. While they had an Open sign in window they were clearly not ready for customers (they say they're open from 11-9). It was dark, there was a teenaged boy sitting with a laptop who seemed very bothered that we interrupted him, and not another soul in sight. We sat, got menus and water, then waited quite some time before someone came out of the back to take our order (and turn the lights on). And once we ordered & got our food no one came to check on us or see if we needed anything. So every time we DID need something we had to interrupt the bothered teenager who had to go in the back (where we could hear arguing) to get someone and then wait. It was uncomfortable to say the least. Food: I will say that the potstickers were delicious - cooked perfectly with a nice crisp bottom and plump with a delicious filling. I do wish though that they would give you the vinegar & chili oil instead of the rather bland sauce they came with. The mushu chicken was extremely bland - and mostly cabbage. You really had to look for the chicken. The worst however was the basil eggplant. I am a person who loves salt. But I actually had to spit my first bite into the napkin because it was insanely salty. Thinking perhaps that I had one piece that might have gotten the brunt of the salt I tried another. Arggggg. So after 10 minutes when I finally got a hold of the woman who was helping us and explained she took it back. What they brought back was only slightly less salty. Aside from the salt the dish had no flavor. Two measly pieces of basil and no other seasonings at all. Sadly we will definitely not be back. read more

China Villa had the best Chinese food on the west coast. It's not greasy at all. It's clean and fresh and they eem have brown rice. Their Grneral Tsao's chicken isn't fried, it's AMAZING! Great spare ribs, yummy won ton soup, great pot stickers. They have a great assortment of vegetarian dishes too with fresh vegetables in wonderful sauces. This restaurant is in no way "authentic" Chinese food, BUT it's still delicious and I have been going here since I was a kid. I love their Ming Garden Scallops, Black Pepper Beef (with real rib eye) and Lettuce Blossom. Their food is always fresh, and lately the food keeps getting better and better, especially in the early evenings. Maybe it's because they have an extra chef in the kitchen during peak hours. I find that the staff is always super friendly and efficient. The owner, Mary, is so sweet and always asks how my family is. Oh, plus this place delivers. Had a hankering for some hot & sour soup, but it wasn't on the lunch menu. Though I was sorely disappointed at that, i did enjoy the lunch special: a little salad with a lovely tangy sauce, a cup of egg drop soup, the old favorite; vegetarian spring rolls that felt like they weren't from scratch (very uniform), and cashew chicken which was a-ok. What I did like was the atmosphere and ambiance. So, couple that with a fairly large lunch menu at a decent price and I'll be back. Maybe dinner will produce that elusive hot and sour. read more
