WASTED $162 on an order from CHINA WOK on Merimmon Avenue, Asheville, NC. Should return it for a refund. Restaurant has 4 stars, $$$, so we thought we'd try it hoping for some good Chinese food. We were really disappointed, should return it for a refund. Here's what we ordered: 1. Sesame Chicken* - turned out to be small over cooked pieces, dry, not tender, and just over sweet, the same sweet as the orange chicken and the ribs. 2. Orange Chicken* - also overcooked, not tender, no orange present or flavor and no spice, where's the heat which the dish calls for, and just sweet, the same flavor as the sesame chicken. 3. BBQ Ribs* - small, mostly bone, little meat, over cooked, black, dry, not tender, and just the same sweet as the chicken. 4. Roast Pork Fried Rice* - just the same flavor as the chicken. 5. Beef Lo Mein* - while this was a highlight with lovely tender beef and noodles, the flavor was the same as the chicken. 6. Roast Pork Egg Roll - small, maybe 3" x 1/2" and not enough filling, needs more cabbage and pork. 7. Spring Roll - like the egg roll. 8. Wonton Soup - salty 9. Was alone on Christmas, so I decided to order Chinese food from here delivered... bad idea. They threw in some kind of meat eggroll which I didn't order, and the meat inside it was literally RAW. It was disgusting, so I threw it out. My Szechuan chicken didn't even look like chicken. It was soft and rubbery and honestly tasted undercooked. Today China Wok gets just 2 stars. I ordered the exact same food that I ordered last week, and was charged over $10 more for LESS food. My order was screwed up. I did not order soup & was charged for soup. I did not order white rice & was charged for a box of white rice. I ordered wontons that come w/ a soy dipping sauce and that was NOT in the bag, & trying to explain that to the lady at the window got me no where-she insisted the crispy cheese wontons were the same as the fried wontons. I explained that I was overcharged and you would think a restaurant would want to straighten that out, but not this lady--I was just rushed aside and on to the next customer. Chinese food is so familiar to us but varies so much from place to place. China wok is a good quality. The taste is very impressive. Their selection of vegetarian foods is really good. Judging by the girth of many of those around me, most of them go so they can eat themselves into an MSG coma and get at least their $8.99 worth. The food was okay (although most of the main courses taste much the same as each other.) I had one bowl of soup, an egg roll, and only one plate of food plus a cup of tea, so I probably didn't get my money's worth - but again, I went for the speed and convenience. When I got my check, however, I was astounded to find they charged me $2.75 for A CUP OF BREWED TEA! I can only imagine what they charge for soft drinks! Never again! read more

There are not many Chinese places in Asheville so I take what I can get. This is better than most but it is an order at the counter kinda place. They have seating but I suggest getting it to go if you can. The dinning room is not the best. This is not a normal seat down place. It is good for a quick and cheap meal. I went with the lunch schezwan chicken with pork fried rice. I added a hot and sour soup. You can judge a place by its hot and sour soup. It was real good here. The schezwan chicken was good but I would look at getting something different next time. I am still on my adventure to find great Chinese food in Asheville. Just had lunch at China Wok and it was "A-OK". There are a few things you need to keep in mind before you visit here. Namely, that this is a no frills simple little Chinese joint. So don't expect anything fancy. That being said though, it is dirt cheap and reasonably tasty. I went with the Mongolian Chicken and some hot and sour soup. Both were fine but neither stood out. My one complaint is that "holy fungi Batman" there were a lot of mushrooms in both. This didn't sit very well with me since I'm not a fan of mushrooms. So beware. Both of my coworkers seemed happy enough with their dishes. I wouldn't be opposed to returning but I also wouldn't seek it out. read more

It's "Chinese" "food" with scare quotes around both words. It's unpretentious and wildly inauthentic and terrible for your arteries. It's the gooey stuff they pour over rice at your local mall's food court. Doughy egg rolls. Cornstarchy sauces. It has funny, non-descriptive names for things like "Sizzling Jade Buddha Dragon" where you close your eyes, point at the menu, and assume it'll taste exactly like everything else they serve because it is, in fact, the same item listed multiple ways, and only the title has changed. Fried proteins that are mostly breading and MSG. Hot and sour soup with little fried noodles floating in it. Everything, of course, comes swimming in a puddle of unidentified brown goo, ladled over "ham" fried rice that's actually made with off-label spam. That kind of "Chinese" "food". The kind you crave at 2 in the morning. The kind you think about all day long after your honey dumps you. The kind with fortune cookies and cheap, splintery wooden chop sticks in paper wrappers and little sachets of brown salty water labeled "soy sauce". Simple, non-challenging, comforting "Chinese" "food". I love it! This place has it. This is where you come to get your "Chinese" "food" fix. Ample portions, excellent Hot&Sour, and nasty "Szechwan" dishes (maybe nasty in a way that will tickle your fancy; do you love food coloring?). A week's worth of steamed white rice comes with every order. A little pricey and they don't deliver, but for the category this place is probably the best AVL has to offer. read more

But even compared to your little local Chinese place that I know is in your town, trusty reader, China Wok ain't that great. The menu is completely standard, so if you're looking for something familiar don't worry about not finding it. On the other hand those favorites are not done too well - the Won Ton soup is sort of craptacular, like the worst Won Ton's floating in salty soy-sauce water. The fried rice is standard, and the entrees are about the same. Redeeming points: it is close to my house, close to UNC-A, open to 11 on weekends, the owners are nice, they eat the good looking food as a family if you come in late, and is cheap - I mean less than five dollars for a lunch special out the door. As an earlier reviewer wrote "I want to like this place every time I stop" but no more, I'm done with them as of tonight. The only real plus to China Wok is it's convenience in N. Asheville. I have eaten there 4 to 5 times and the food has gotten worse with each visit. Anything with something other then chicken or shrimp (pork or beef) is almost uneatable. You can tell some of the appetizers are frozen, packaged food, the spring rolls are always stale and shrimp were ancient. I have had some lo mein there which was okay. If you must eat there keep it simple, fried rice, lo mein, etc. The prices listed on the internet are wrong. Maybe I would have written something more positive if the spring roll that I just bought from there and bit into before writing hadn't squirted grease all over my computer. read more
