Ha Long Bay continues to be one of my favorite spots in Pinellas, and it's easy to see why. The menu spans dim sum, Chinese, and Vietnamese dishes, so you can build a meal that hits every craving in one sitting -- which is exactly what we did last night. We started with dim sum: taro dumplings (three pieces) and shark fin dumplings (four pieces) -- despite the name, there's no shark fin involved, it's just named for the shape, which resembles a shark fin. Filling-wise it tasted like a shu mai with pork and shrimp, just sealed closed rather than open-topped. Their house-made hot chili sauce was a standout -- just the right amount of heat without overpowering the dumplings. For entrées, I went with the Com Thit Nuong (Vietnamese grilled pork chop with egg), and my wife had the Banh Xeo (Vietnamese pork and shrimp crepe). We also ordered the salt and pepper calamari, which stole the show for me -- the batter was light and perfectly seasoned, fried up crunchy, and tossed with garlic and hot chilies. Hands down my favorite dish of the night. They also do a Mandarin-style pork chop that reminds me of the Peking-style pork chops you'd find in Chinatown, NYC -- a nice touch for anyone missing that flavor down here in Florida. Everyone's heard or at least has seen the sign for Ha Long Bay so we decided to go try it one Friday afternoon for lunch. Service isn't the best here but it's doable. Menu has a large selection and they came by with their dim sum cart and offered us some selections. Their pork dumpling and beef bun was good. Pho: 3/5, spices were too fragrant and almost all I could taste from the soup. Bun Bo Hue: 4/5, a bit too sweet for my liking but still good! Beef fried rice: 5/5, star of the show! So good and cooked very well. Sichuan beef: 2/5, thought it was gonna be more Chinese infused but it was just stir fry. Garlic pork chops: 2/5, heard great things but this was okay and too sweet. I tried takeout today and was pretty disappointed in the quality and service. This is a no frills place, so if service is slightly lacking, I can easily disregard that. It's the food quality that really the big deal here. I got the rice shrimp rolls and also the shrimp dumplings. I arrived promptly to pick the order up and both items were room temperature. Ha Long Bay in Tyrone has been around for a while, and I have watched the prices climb over the years. The food is ok overall, but their menu is pretty good for the area, and they offer a lot of choices you do not usually find nearby. The pho broth is nice and hearty, a bit on the sweet side. The dim sum is solid, and as far as I know they are the only spot in St. Pete that serves it, which makes them worth a visit when the craving hits. The menu is large and covers a wide range of dishes, so there is always something new to try. There can be a wait at times, especially on busy weekends. They also close during some late afternoons, so it is worth checking their hours before you stop by. If you want dim sum in St. Pete and a big menu to pick from, Ha Long Bay gets the job done. read more

This review is strictly covering our dim sum experience at Ha Long Bay. I guess I will be going against the grain here but let me be one of the few to advise against being fooled by the 3.7 stars (if you subscribe to the "3-star Asian restaurant theory," this would be an accurate reflection of that). Ha Long Bay is a great restaurant for dim sum whether you're new to the dim sum culture or an experienced connoisseur via birth-right indoctrination. The restaurant sits off of 34th Street in St. Petersburg which sees a decent amount of traffic throughout the day. There is a two-row lot that sits in front of the entire plaza which is only one directional; the entry to this actually further up along the plaza. The parking immediately in front of the restaurant can get pretty full, however the rest of the plaza is fairly vacated for this time of day - so I definitely recommend parking up in this area if you identify that the aforementioned area being fully occupied if you don't want to come back around into the parking lot. There are several large tables that can accommodate big parties (we came with a group of 12 [7 adults and 5 kids] and were seated comfortably at one of their large round tables with a lazy-susan/turntable). There were also smaller round tables and booths throughout. We arrived around 1015 and didn't have to wait like we usually do with the dim sum restaurants in the Northeast. By 1100 the dim sum patrons were coming in droves and the dim sum service was in full swing. Despite the amount of patrons, the restaurant maintained a good rotation of their tables which mitigated any sort of wait time. There is a pink service slip that sits at your table to account for the various dim sum trays ordered a la carte (literally). The aunties and young gentlemen do a great job bringing around the carts, so we didn't find ourselves needing to place in any special orders through the servers. The restaurant was also incredibly clean when it came to their silverware and dishes. Ha Long Bay also exceeded expectations when it came to the flavor of their dim sum. The flavors of the dishes were on par with the dim sum that you find in NYC/Jersey. All the trays appeared fresh and even came with a spicy kick to their traditional dishes. Additional spicy condiments and chili oils were also available at the table so you don't have to go through the trouble of flagging down a server to get some. I only go here for dim sum with my coworkers at lunch time. Its the only place around to do dim sum everyday, and at lunch. The lotus leaf wrapped sticky rice with Chinese sausage is my favorite. As a visitor from out of state, Ha Long Bay is a place to visit. In search of a place open for Christmas dinner, we originally went to Red Lobster (which was a mess). But noticed the open sign in the Ha Long Bay window. We ran next door and were seated quickly. It being Christmas, the restaurant and staff were slammed, but the staff did what they could and powered through. The food was delicious, even the dishes not pictured. (Not pictured are the Fresh Spring Rolls, Pho, or House Noodle Soup.) The staff and kitchen dealt with the onslaught of in-house diners, as well as to go orders--turning over tables for the next guest and getting orders out the kitchen. I love that they are the close and the only Dim Sum place in the area, but I HATE (yes, it's a strong word, but I HATE) some of the service staff. They are SO rude, and I've even had one of them (that short pixie-haired lady) throw menus across the table before. The staff in NYC and Boston's Chinatown aren't even that rude! Anyway, if you can get past that, and if you don't feel like driving over the bridge to the other Dim Sum locations, then there are some tasty things here. We always start off with WATER SPINACH and/or SNOW PEA TIPS. They usually have one or the other, but most of the time, never both at once. Also, you have to order any "Salt and Pepper" item. They way they season this up, the plate will get cleaned. Other star items that I love here are the BEEF CHOW FUN and the SALTED FISH & CHICKEN FRIED RICE. This place gets really busy to the point where people are waiting outside for a table, especially on the weekend so prepare for a wait. Honestly I have no complaints about the dimsum. The prices are good and I usually stick to the typical dim sum cart items. I will keep coming here, but I just wish that they would get those bad apple employees out of there and away from patrons. read more

One star. I'm from Houston Texas, and we eat dim sum regularly in Houston and California. I don't say that to brag--I say it to set context. Never, in all those years, have I experienced service this poor at a dim sum restaurant. To make matters worse, the ownership is Vietnamese, and I spoke fluent Vietnamese with them directly. There was no language barrier here. This was purely an operational and service failure. The most serious issue: I ordered a dim sum dish and found a piece of what appeared to be a Brillo pad embedded in the food. When I brought it to the owner's attention, she immediately took the dish into the kitchen. What followed was visible confusion among the staff. She attempted to have the same dish reordered for me, and the waiter even tried to mark it as a normal reorder before she intervened and told him not to. Credit where it's due--she stopped that. However, her reaction made it feel like the priority was preventing other guests from seeing the issue rather than addressing it transparently. Service overall was consistently poor. Not once were our drinks refilled. Not once. We also ordered from the menu and asked for roast duck. Our waiter told us there was no roast duck available. About 15 minutes later, the table behind us ordered roast duck from a different waitress, and she confirmed it was available. We watched her speak to our waiter, who still insisted there was no duck. The other waitress--who clearly had seniority--told him to check the back. Suddenly, there was a duck. By then, we were already halfway through our meal, and the moment was gone. Extremely disappointing. Being from Houston, maybe I'm spoiled by well-run dim sum restaurants that value consistency, communication, and basic hospitality. But this experience wasn't about high standards--it was about fundamentals. This is simply not how you run a dim sum business. I will not be returning the next time I'm in Tampa. read more

We had sui mai, har gow, steamed shrimp & crab dumplings, beef short ribs, and tofu-skin wrapped rolls. Not only were those items barely warm, but the skins on the seafood dumplings were thick & gummy. There was no shrimp in the sui mai despite that being in the description of the dish. Short ribs were very chewy. Portions were also quite small. Additionally, we ordered turnip cake off the menu. Again, it came barely warm as if it had been cooked well before our order. Went in for some dim sum and ended up getting pho. It's hard to pass by pho and not get it. It's a fairly large restaurant. They have big family tables and smaller tables. The staff are friendly and informative about the menu. The food is alright. There's only two options for pho. They have the tendon tripe and meatball option. They also have a lean meat option. Normally I get a large pho bowl that has all these together but since that wasn't an option I got lean meat option. The Pho was okay. I definitely had better but it wasn't bad either. Some of the green onions were brown and looked slightly rotten but overall it wasn't bad but I wouldn't order pho from here. First time to eat here. Service was good... I kept it simple and ordered from the lunch menu with the addition of some wonton soup. Sweet and Sour chicken lunch came with rice and an eggroll. Sweet and Sour chicken was delicious... although the sauce could use more SOUR. It was pretty sweet (Americanized) lollipop sauce. I have an Cantonese recipe for this sauce that used Apple Cider Vinegar, and it is nice and tart / sweet. That is what I always hope for. Wonton soup was delicious, could have made a meal of just that and been very happy! Eggroll was huge, and really delicious! Rice... properly cooked, and not mush. Yum! All in all... a great lunch! We came to Ha Long Bay today to have Dim Sum. Most of the dishes we ordered were delicious as always, except for the beef tripe. The favour was there but it was very hard and not as soft as it should be. So I mentioned to the waitress. My goal was to alert her to let the kitchen staff knows to steam it a little longer. She replied, " sorry, let me take it away for you and take it off from your bill". She did it without any hesitations. Thank you. I very rarely regret spending money on food, but this is one of those times. My fiancé and I decided to try Ha Long Bay on a whim after being recommended. We tried to play it safe by ordering common items, especially since we hadn't tried this restaurant before. Once all of our food arrived, it looked fresh and was piping hot. Once we were able to try everything, all of the food fell flat. The dim sum plates that we ordered were pork and peanut, chicken, and pork and ginger dumplings. Everything was just weird. The dough seemed undercooked and the meat tasted very strange. The chicken dumpling had a very odd texture and didn't seem like chicken. The meat was brown and incredibly hard to bite into. We are typically big fans of Asian food, but there was just something off with the food today. The orange chicken and the lo mein were both pretty bad. There was way too much garlic in the noodles and nothing outstanding about any of the proteins. After all of this disappointment, we receive the check and it was $70 before tip. We paid and didn't take any leftovers and just left. As we were leaving another couple, we're leaving as well after returning some of their food. My friend was visiting for the wknd and she loves dim sum so based on other reviews I knew we had to come here. Arrived on a Sat at around 10:45am and were seated right away and it got busier as we were there, but there was already a good crowd when we arrived. They have the cart service so you are fed quickly. Many choices and all taste fresh. We tried crab balls, shrimp dumplings, footballs (crunchy outside with bbq pork), crunchy rice, steam buns, veggies and salt & pepper calamari ( probably forgetting a few things - oh ya, eggrolls). Most were acceptable or good but a few were definite misses. The black bean pork ribs lacked flavor and the taro dumplings were not sweet and had an odd taste to them, wouldn't recommend them. This is rated solely on dim sum since that's all that I had. First of all, this is the only restaurant in the Tampa Bay area that has dim sum every day until 4 PM. It is reasonably priced, the attendants were really friendly, the dishes can quickly, and they were fantastic. There was a pan fried chive dumping that I wouldn't order again because I didn't care for the taste, but it was cooked perfectly with a great chewy dumpling skin and a crunchy golden brown on each side.
