The best Chinese food restaurant I have been to in FL. Unfortunately the owner told me he was going to renovate the restaurant while he was visiting family in NY. My wife and I went there on 01/10/2026 and was surprised to find Ho Ho Choy gone. Ju Hu House in its place. Look to be to upscale for the neighborhood both in menu and prices. I will not patronize this place again and I'll be surprised if it lasts the year. read more

This restaurant exceeded my expectations. I was going in thinking that the food wouldn't be as good but small mom and pop shops are usually the best food. You won't get much interaction from the host or waitress, but the food was pretty good. They also offer seafood boils, so that's something to keep in mind too in case you're looking to have that. read more

We have been here before and the food is always great. Tonight was no exception. What we did learn. My wife's favorite Chinese dish, Beef Chow Fun was amazing here. The best we ever had. It was first time ordering here. It is listing on the Dim Sum menu and not the regular menu. If you like Chinese mustard, it was the strongest I ever had. Had a wild moment with it. lol. If you are in the mood for Dim Sum & Cantonese style food then you must visit Ho Ho Choy! We ordered the bean pancakes. I had never had them & they were delicious! I also had some Won ton soup and again delicious! My husband had the sweet & sour soup & said it was BETTER than China Yuan! That is usually our favorite place.. but that restaurant is Hong Kong style. The other menu item that was better than CY was the Beef Chow Fun! The flavor and quality of the beef were a step above! I wish they did the Dim Sum cart experience here but if not doing it means fresher food.. than that's fine by me! We will probably order from here on Christmas Day instead of our usually annual place. :) read more

We ordered duck noodle soup (not on the menu) as I am OBSESSED with it to the point I can cook it. Heard I had to go try this place out but man was I disappointed. The duck was super fatty and broth. I also felt the broth wasn't flavorful. Usually I can taste the 5 spices but not in this one. It was a total let down. We also tried some dim sum items and fried calamari. Came here with the family for dinner. Located in the same plaza as Beijing House. We've come once before but I barely remember. The place was empty and we were greeted and seated as soon as we entered. Drink orders were taken and out quickly. Food was out quick as well. We ordered the wonton soup, beef fried rice, duck, kung Pao chicken, Mongolian beef and general Tso chicken. It's family style so the plates are placed in the center which has a turntable for others at the table to turn and get the dishes. Overall food was good and service was good. The winner of the evening was the Mongolian beef. It was very tasty and the meat was just so tender and cut thin. The veggies it came with were also cooked well. Hubs and I were not a fan of the duck, it had a strong herb taste to it. The wonton soup was also very good. This place is just ok. Hubs and I prefer Beijing House that's literally a few doors down. read more

I have a long and storied history with Ho Ho Choy's starting in the early 90's and my introduction to Dim Sum. It would be many years before anybody in Tampa produced the quality, variety and authenticity of the food they carry. Today was a Dim Sum day for me. Locked in on some favorites. For about 25+ years this was a 5 star place for me. Many of the dishes are syill 5 star but consistency is not what it used to be. Maybe a change in cooks, who knows? They always seem to be trying new things, Cajun Food, Hot Pot and now Korean Fried Chicken is coming. The new stuff fizzles out eventually but the Chinese food is their solid foundation. A favorite of mine is buying a live 2+ lb lobster at the market on Fowler and bringing it to Ho Ho's for one of my favorite dishes, Lobster in Spicy Black Bean Sauce on a bed of Pan Fried Noodles. To die for!! I've done the same with live Dungeness Crab, usually in a Ginger Garlic Sauce. This is the only place I know that will cook live crabs or lobster that you bring in from the market. Nothing like handing someone a live lobster and in 10 minutes it's cooked and on your table! They originated on Dale Mabry in the Kmart Plaza next to a bar and a theatre about 35 years ago. All long gone by now. There is where I discovered Dim Sum and they still have some of the best out there. It was not till 5-10 years ago that other places finally caught up in variety and quality. 18 years ago, after 16 years on Dale Mabry, Ho Ho's moved to their current location on Fletcher. The chinese food here is better than most, they offer a huge variety of meals cooked in authentic style. Much better than your corner china food store. They also carry a standard assortment of americanized dishes we are all used to. Food is mostly super good, the flavors are authentic and I highly recommend you try it. Little secret, ask about seasonal vegetables, many times they are not on the menu. read more

I got hot n sour soup and finished it by the time i got back to Lutz. The house special Lo Mein is my go to meal, and i tip $10 every time I stop in. This has resulted in me getting some of the best food from a place that looks like it's still in the 80's on the inside. The same guy is there every time I stop by and I like that. I absolutely love the food at Ho Ho Choy. It is so good. The Dim Sum is made fresh and brought out quickly. My only issue is the service. The day we went in, servers were not very friendly, and they actually looked like they despise their jobs. They didn't check on us often despite the restaurant not being very busy when we went in. The ambiance is typical Chinese restaurant. I will go back regularly due to the super yummy food despite the attitudes of the servers. read more

Food is sub par. We ordered 7 dim sum items and a crab dish, hoping to order more as we eat. Fortunately, we didn't because we barely ate what's on the table. We had a surly waitress, but I guess we all will have a bad day at work at some point. Place is very dated, not much to look at. Wow, so sad how they've gone downhill over the past few years. I've ordered several times since COVID hoping the bad experiences were the exception because this was our go-to place for many years. Now it just ltastes like mall food. Steamed pork buns mostly empty, meat dishes flavorless shamably tiny portions of everything. Shrimp lo mein $14 total rip off see the picture. No seasoning to anything it's like fast food. Time to look elsewhere because I'm done with this place. Had a very good dinner on Saturday night. The service was excellent and the portions were large. The egg rolls and wonton soup were very good. The Happy Family was loaded with shrimp and vegetables. Had the hot pot for lunch, overall good but you're limited on meat options and veggies with the combination dishes. The little sheep broth was ok, I had to add some sauces to make it taste better. The sauces and soup spoons you have to go get youself at the little stand alone table near the front windows. As for for food, you can go a la carte and choose individual meats and veggies and pay for each (which I recommend) or for a better value choose one of the set meat combinations which is what we did. The meat combo comes with beef, tripe, or fish, etc, but everyone gets the same basket of veggies that also include seaweed, noodles, an egg and a fish ball. The basket of veggies was a bit dispointing as I wanted more variety. Will give this place another chance but next time I'm going to have to choose more veggies separately and skip the combo. read more

Went back for more shrimp dumplings take out. I felt a little rushed when I went in for the first time and didn't know what to order. But service was fast (took less than 15 mins), and the food was hot, fresh, and delicious. I also tried the vegetable spring rolls, and the sesame balls. But so far the shrimp dumplings is my fav. I haven't eaten at the Shabu Shabu part of Ho Ho Choy in years and am delighted that I went on such a cold day. My friends and I opted for the AYCE and it was worth it! $27 for everything! I ordered the Hot & Spicy broth, while my friends ordered the Little Sheep and Spicy Little Sheep broths (all vegetarian). We ordered almost everything: taro, watercress, Napa cabbage, and other veggies, and ramen, sweet potato, & udon noodles; beef strips, mussels, scallops, oysters, eggs, shrimp pastes, meat & fish balls, shrimp & chive dumplings, and shrimp dumplings. I have never had a bad dish at Ho Ho Choy, to be completely honest. If there is something that I am missing out on or have not tried, feel free to shoot me a message. Items listed in order from top to bottom, with my favorites being at the top: 1. snow pea leaves with garlic (if they do not have this in season, order Ong Choi, aka water spinach) 2. honey roast pork with hoisen dipping sauce (it is the red color pork hanging in the case) 3. har gow (basic shrimp dumplings, this place is my favorite in Tampa for them) 4. rolled rice noodle with beef inside (often called beef rice crepe) 5. fried cruller wrapped with rice noodle (here, they make them fresh- don't knock it till you try it!) 6. hong kong style roast duck (hanging in the case, my mom swears that Ho Ho Choy's is the best) 7. soy sauce noodles (they make them really good here, dry fried egg noodles with tons of ginger) 8. sesame balls 9. spicy eggplant with ground pork 10. pan fried seafood noodles (a nest of crispy fried noodles, covered in seafood and sauce) Ho Ho Choy is my 2nd go-to place in Tampa Bay for dim sum (beaten by Halong Bay on cart service only), and my 3rd go-to place for Chinese food (beaten by China Yuan, then Yummy House Waters Ave. location). I can only speak to their shabu shabu and a couple buns.. but I very much enjoyed the experience. Very flavorful. The employees were helpful. Had a great time cooking in my hotpot and mixing sauces. Had a great time with great peeps and would recommend it to others for a special dining experience. :) They also have sushi / rolls, Chinese food dishes and dim sum served up on the regular restaurant side. And you can order off any menu even if you do shabu shabu (swish swish). Tip: the thin meat cooks VERY fast. Take it out right away. ;) Become a sauce mixologist. Our friend like to try shabu shabu and we pick this restaurant since they have closer one to our Chinese taste. We normally don't do shabu shabu is due to the assembly material can be obtained in any oriental market and cook it yourself. What is shabu shabu. My family celebrating Chinese New Year with this cuisine because it can add anyone anytime by add additional material without involving heavy cooking. The New Year also fall in the winter time and they are cold outside and shabu shabu is the best part. There is a Chinese term for shabu shabu- hot pot. We actually have the charcoal in middle to broil the soup and heat up the pot. Now we have the electric broiler that not required charcoal and easy to control the temperature of the pot. The material is easy. Just but the chicken and pork and remove the meat. The bone of the pork and chicken put into the soup and broil for the broth. This restaurant did not do that. All their soup is come in package of spice and added into the pot. They have the selection of the slice meat, meat or fish ball, dumpling, veggies, type noodles. They are not authentic since their soup is in package. Eating the hot pot is topic the sauce correctly. The right sauce is important to dip on after you have broil your material. The service of the restaurant is slow. But they have each pot for each person. Something I don't understand is why they charge the soup to broil in addition to the material. I would suggest only charge when you want to upgrade the soup. read more
