I love this place! Good food, great price, and HUGE portions. I got orange chicken, salt and pepper wings, and 1/2 chow mein 1/2 fried rice. You can see how packed my order is! The orange chicken and salt & pepper wings were both crispy despite being delievered thru Uber. What stood out most to me is the chow mien because I loved the noodle to veggie ratio. Other places I've been too will have a lot of filler with cabbage, onions, etc. but there was so many noodles in this one! Thick and chewy in texture and just perfect. If you are craving a Chinese takeout meal, I truly feel this place checks all the boxes! You can sit in the restaurant of course, but I recommend taking it home and enjoying with some TV. I decided to try this location of Chinatown Express on Beverly & Normandie because it has more reputable reviews compared to other locations in Central LA. This location is much smaller with only 3 tables and a few parking spots on the lot. However, that didn't hinder me from placing my first combo order at this location. I ordered a two item combo with fried rice, chow mein, potato chicken and beef with broccoli. The total was slightly below $13 and they accept card. I took my order to go and ate it elsewhere. The potato chicken was quite sweet yet savory and not too overpowering. The broccoli beef could've been improved because the sauce and beef were too salty for me. My only gripes are minor ones as slightly smaller pieces of bbq rib would've allowed the flavor to soak in better right to the center but it was still great. Fried rice is some of the best I've had in a while as it was well cooked (not gummy) and properly seasoned instead of it being a mostly flavorless vessel for the meat like most other places I've been to. Many times have I gone by Chinatown Express and underestimated. This is truly a case of - don't judge a book by its cover. Chinatown Express is a hole-in-the-wall type of spot on Western with great takeout and delivery options. I've now had delivery from here twice and been pleased with everything I've had. Walnut Shrimp ($15.50) - This was a generous portion covered in their creamy, milky honey mayo based sauce. I think it needed a bit more sweetness to it, but was a good walnut shrimp dish. Honey Shrimp ($15) - I was curious if this would be different than the Walnut Shrimp so had to test it. It's not, loilz! The same gooey goodness without the walnuts for 2 quarters less. Again, liked but didn't love it. Cream cheese wontons (6 for $5) - Awesome deal, so packed full of flavor for wontons, they were almost more like rangoons. Nice crispness and really tasty sweet and sour sauce to dip the crisp bits in. Kung Pao Chicken - Not deep fried and packed full of veggies, great dish to balance things a bit. It was not spicy at all if that's a concern for you, though slightly sad for me. They did include a packet of hot sauce though, so it all turned out okay. Orange Chicken - Back to deep fried American Chinese eats goodness! I loved it, great flavor with more actual orange fruit tang to it than just sweet sugar. I found that refreshing and enjoyed the difference in flavor and textures in the dish. Cans of pop are $1.50 which didn't strike me as egregious. Overall, been super happy with Chinatown Express as my new cheap eats Chinese delivery spot! I've become a regular. read more

I have been looking for good, affordable party trays to bring to holiday parties this season and Chinatown Express has been the answer to all my prayers. On the outside, they seem like your average hot food bar style Chinese lunchbox joint but this is an absolute powerhouse of an establishment providing delicious, authentic Chinese food at a great price. I have ordered party trays several times in the past month and they never miss. I call in a day in advance (sometimes the day of) and they are able to whip up my order within minutes! They don't have a catering menu so you will have to call in for prices but they have small and large trays. The small trays are a lot more food than you think and range from $25-40 dollars depending on the dish. They do party trays for just about everything they have there: orange chicken, chow mein, potstickers, etc. I have gotten so many compliments on these party trays and have had the food myself. It is always delicious and piping hot. The orange chicken stayed crispy after several hours and the dumplings are always a favorite. The woman who runs the cashier and answers the phones deserves an award. I've heard her speak at least 3 different languages and think this place truly highlights the beauty and diversity of LA. Parking can be challenging in this small lot but you can park in the 7/11 spots. read more

Yeah--it's the kind of place you go to in order to satisfy an American Chinese food craving at a reasonable price. But the thing is--the food is actually decent. Kung pao is filled with crisp carrots, zucchini and cabbage instead of peanuts. An upgrade in my book. The hot and sour soup might be a little on the sweet side, but nothing some vinegar won't fix and it's chock full of tofu, bamboo, egg, black mushrooms etc. I've paid double for hot and sour that was paltry in comparison. I'm a fan of the chicken with potatoes. The portions are large-one two item combo is at least 3 meals for me. Service was extremely gracious when I called for a request. Chinatown express is located in a plaza around east Hollywood/ktown. There's parking spots in the plaza but the spots are small and it can be a bit challenging to navigate. They take card but there's a 75 cent fee which isn't too bad compared to the atm rates, but if you have cash bring that instead. I got the half fried rice and half chowmein with a meal of your choice mine which was orange chicken. Their portion sizes for the price is pretty generous. Ordered party trays for a company party. They have 3 sizes. We ordered 3 smalls for like 20 people and we barely made a tent. We ordered orange chicken. $37? Crispy. Fresh. Absolutely delicious and was a huge hit. They stacked the tray with this mountain like serving. It was so much we could've split into 2 trays. We also ordered chow mien $29? And broccoli beef $37? I don't remember the prices exactly. Both were good. I like the chow mien a lot too. But the orange chicken takes the crown. We had enough for everyone to pack to go! Service was great.
