I was supposed to meet my two friends at Takatis Peruvian restaurant also on Van Nuys Boulevard, when unfortunately, it seems to be closed definitely! So we went to Chios well the parking lot is very easy to park, it is adjacent to sizzler's restaurant. My friend Laurence chose a chicken tamal, Peruvian style, and fried plantains. My friend Evelyne chose a vegetarian Tallarin, with green fettuccine, and a bowl of vegetables, since she's vegetarian! At first, they had brought her the tallarin with the chicken milanesa, but she returned the order since she's vegetarian, and received the tallarin with vegetables: shereally love it! And personally, I ordered de aguatito de Pescado y mariscos: it is a green colored seafood soup, with peas and rice; it was my first time ordering that and I really liked it although I thought the green broth was a little bit too thin so I ordered a little more rice to put in it! Despite the middle-of-the-road score, this restaurant has pleasantly fed us on multiple occasions since 2021. On one such date night, our most recent, Chio's managed to deliver what they usually do - filling Peruvian fare that contributed even more to the confidence that we'll eat here again down the line. We're grateful to have a Peruvian place in the neighborhood (we're lucky enough to be in the middle of the two Van Nuys locations) and the time has come to talk about it. I got the pasta sampler - the Fettuccine Dos Sabores - house made pesto fettucine; a not-quite-Alfredo, Peruvian cheese fettucine, both topped with steak and grated parmesan. I'd be remiss not to mention the au jus that made the creaminess of both pastas shine. The result was a savory steak and pasta dish that almost ate like a cheesy stew - which worked. I had enough of the cheese sauce in my beard to attest to the positive experience. And the spouse got Tacu Tacu a Lo Pobre, Chio's crunchy rice plate. It was alluring because the crunchy rice included beans in its makeup. Of course, served with grilled steak, a fried egg and fried plantains. The spouse observed the menu and Yelp pictures, and she thought it looked as advertised. She just wasn't sure if the rice and beans were supposed to be crunchier. She would have appreciated more of a bite in that direction. Sometimes, the good places don't need to be four and five stars to be gems. The ones that are alright, that you don't mind coming back to, to have at your faves or try something new, the continued patronage says it all. Wow. I was pleasantly surprised with the Peruvian food from this casual eatery with waiter service. Large menu but the rotisserie chicken was very good as is their salad reading, yellow sauce, and beans. Pricing and portions are as expected. Parking is provided. Staff is very nice and helpful. If they want to get closer to that full five star review they will need significant improvements to be made to their green sauce and uplift the ambiance. read more

Ok, $26 for lomo saltado which would be fine IF it actually had meat and not a bunch of fries. The 3 stars is for the flavor, which was fair and eating the dry rice and the meat made it bearable. But I think they "forgot" the beef (which is what I was willing to pay for and probably worth the price then). My friend ordered what looked like fried rice with chicken or something. Needless to say that was about $22 and he only had a couple of spoons and did not eat the rest. The other plates were overpriced as well but I only had this one and I'm glad this is all I ordered. If you want to overpriced food and a bunch of rice and fries, this is your place! If not, go somewhere else. read more

I'm becoming a true Peruvian food fan. I keep coming back to this place because their dishes are so rich with flavor and full of soul. I recently ordered their Arroz con Mariscos, which had their flavorful seafood with creamy yellow rissoto rice. It is filled with peppers and peas to give a some color and the whole fixture is to die for. I also got their Churrasco Encebollado which is their grilled rib eye steak cooked to perfection in their wood fire oven. One bite of this meat and you will fall over in savory bliss. We couldn't resist and ordered their Cheesecake de Lucuma. Nom! I love eating the dishes made from Chio's because they are as authentic as they get. The parking at this Chio's is the best. The food is excellent. My favorite dish is the shrimp chowder. It's sooooooooo good. Mom loves their ceviche. They also have incredible pasta. The service and cleanliness could uses work though. There's a note on the soap dispenser in the women's restroom saying it doesn't work, and there's no replacement. If you keep pumping ,soap comes out on the sides, but I'm concerned about who actually does that. read more

I placed and paid for an order through an online app at the Van Nuys location of Chios Peruvian Grill. When I arrived, the restaurant was closed due to plumbing issues. There was no notice in the app and no attempt to stop or refund the charge beforehand. I then went to the Sepulveda location. The staff contacted the owner, and it was the owner's direct decision that I should pay for the exact same order a second time, with the promise that the Van Nuys location would reimburse me later. This was not a staff decision -- it came from the owner herself. I was understandably frustrated and did speak disrespectfully to the employee. I take responsibility for that and regret directing my frustration at staff who were put in the middle of a bad management decision. What makes this worse is that when the owner later called me (from a blocked number) to tell me I was no longer welcome at the restaurant, she clearly knew what I ordered, and exactly how much I was charged. That alone proves she had all the information needed to simply transfer the order or authorize it at the other location instead of forcing me to pay twice. This was a conscious choice by the owner to take a poor customer service route, one that created unnecessary conflict and put her employees at risk of dealing with an upset customer over something completely outside their control. Refusing to provide owner or management contact information, offering only a vague refund timeline, and then banning a customer instead of taking accountability shows extremely poor leadership. I wasn't planning on returning anyway, but this experience confirmed that decision. read more

Overall a pretty authentic Peruvian restaurant in Van Nuys. Friend was in the area visiting so we decided to come here for lunch. Parking was easy as there's a lot and it wasn't super crowded yet. We came a little after 12pm on a Friday. We sat outside and the waitress came and brought us menus, but you can also scan the QR code as well. We decided to share the yucca fries, which was yummy, as was the bread and dipping sauce. I got the Saltado mixto which came with beef, chicken and shrimp. I've always loved rotisserie chicken, and Peruvian restaurants always seem to knock it out of the park! The skin was crispy and the meat juicy. The quinoa salad was surprisingly tasty as well with the avocado and vinaigrette. The yellow and green sauces really helped to switch up the flavors of the food as well! Went on a Friday night and was able to park a few yards away on the street. Super friendly staff greeted and seated us right away. The kitchen has glass so you can see into it if you like. That usually gives me a sense of comfort and trust that they are confident in their staff and cooking. Ordered the Lomo Saltado and the breaded chicken on fettuccine noodles (I forgot the name of this dish on the menu). Both tasted fresh and were tasty. Also ordered the plátano frito appetizer which was also delicious. Closed dinner off with coffee and alfajor cookies. Altogether came to about $85 for two people, not including tip. Came here on a whim, because my best friend is visiting from out of town and wanted to try. Neither of ua eat much peruvian cuisine (he's never had any), but I truly enjoy my entree saltado vegetariano, essentially a veggie stir fry. The flavor were overwhelming in all the right ways. My friend had a pretty standard large portion salad served cobb style with all the veggie and protein separated. He went to town while I devoured sauteed tomatoes, quinua, bell peppers and an amazing assortment of incredibly blended veggies. We enjoyed out meals complete with amazing complimentary bread rolls, custom green Peruvian salsa and choice beverages. They do offer select wine & beer here mostly imports, but nothing too exciting. Though we walked over the parking lot was pretty spacious. Our dinning area was very tidy, with a very of Van Nuys Blvd. Even the bathrooms are super well kept. That said... We didnt have the most personable service, but our server who closed us out was very warm and friendly and attentive. Maybe the gentleman who served us in the begginging was anxious to take a lunch or clock out but he was pretty deadpan during our experience or not really interested in helping us, mostly going through motions... I decided to try a different style of food for our monthly activities and went with Peruvian food. I stopped by 5 days before the event was scheduled and was able to get down to the final pricing with Lily. She was very kind and to be honest the price was simply phenomenal. I ordered the food 8/12 and picked up the food on 8/16 and guess what, it was on FREAKING TIME. Aside from being on time, our guests along with myself truly enjoyed the quality of the food. The sauces are so dang good and the hooked it up with some big Gallon (insert exaggeration) sauce containers. We had more than enough food and our guests were able to take seconds home for a late dinner or for tomorrow lunch. A job well done and best believe we will be back read more

Went late May 2025 to the one on Sepulveda. I was disappointed with my experience since the last time I was there about a year and a half ago. First off, it was a Saturday lunch time and there was ONLY ONE waitress for the entire restaurant. I mean, a Lomo Saltado costs $26 now and a chicha morada pitcher about $18 and the gritty owners have ONLY have one waitress handling all guests??? On top of that they charge a $3+ MADE UP convenience fee per bill which is pure BS. I guess they want to pass the minimum wage increase to customers with ONLY one waitress. Poor waitress was running around like headless chicken, forgetting butter and plates for entries, taking a very long time to take orders and take bills, much less to even ask guests about how they are doing. Customers literally had to get up and go to the front desk to get anything they needed cause the waitress just would not be able to help given everything she had to handle. I will not be going here anymore to avoid having a bad experience. Chio's owner don't be so gritty and hire more waitress. It will improve your business greatly. You can afford it with those insane food prices. Remember, no customers = no business so you need to think about it do better for your customers. read more

This location's food was sadly not up to par with the Woodland Hills location that we're used to. Got this for our 3rd Wedding Anniversary dinner, and it just simply lacked flavor, and portions of meat were quite stingy. Definitely not worth the increase in price they're now charging. Not to mention my sister in law threw up no more than 30 minutes after we ate; she was also saying how her plate specifically tasted funny. Let's do this by the numbers. 1) The service is slow. There is no sense of urgency to be found anywhere in the front of the house. 2) The food was okay. My steak was a little over the Medium rare that I asked for. My fries tasted as if they had no salt. They should have been salted fresh out of the frier to ensure the salt would stick. Lastly, I am a big believer in finishing salt, a sprinkle over my steak would have pushed it over the top. My wife's Lomo Saltado was too salty. I understand that there is a lot of soy sauce in Peruvian cooking but this was an overwhelming salty flavor. All in all, I don't feel like I would recommend this place or return here. read more

This is going to be a honest review. No sugar coating or fairytales. I would always drive past this place several times a week and would say let's try it to my wife. Most of the time she would agree. So we finally decided to give this place a try since our sisters was on our side of town. Honestly it was a mistake. The restaurant is really small and try to stuff so many people inside when it should be have the tables but whatever. The restaurant has music playing very loud. Especially for a small place. The temperature was very warm. Even my wife who is always cold was complaining it was hot. The service was far below bad. The server would take forever to come to our table if we needed things. Would forget stuff we asked for. We had to asked for things 2 or 3 times. Would barely refill our drinks and if she did, she didn't put ice. And we were only a party of 5. I seen other groups come in and get better service. The food was so so. Nothing to brag about. Was kinda disappointed. I've been to other Peruvian restaurants and had way better service and food. Some of it was very salty. Other parts was very dry. It took them forever to bring us some bread. And when they did it was hot and burnt. WTH!!! The only plus was that the prices were decent. Dessert wasn't even offered. Like what kinda place does that. Like really what shit service and experience. So bad I don't even want to try their other locations. They put me off forever. We were there for about 2hrs for no real reason. The place wasn't packed or had a waiting list. Once we were done eating we had waited for like another 20 mins for someone to bring a bill after asking several different people to bring it. I see some posts dismissing negative reviews with 'oh, they don't know what Peruvian food *really* tastes like', which might be a valid note, except... the negative reviews are very clear -- prices too high, food is poor quality, service isn't good, and the manager doesn't do anything for the customer except diss or ignore them or both. None of those things require knowing what something *really* tastes like -- they're all noting fundamental issues that should be addressed. I've lived in Peru, and for what it's worth, Chio's versions of those lovely, deliciously addictive Peruvian dishes taste like cra-, uh, really bad. Not even close. There literally isn't another Peruvian restaurant anywhere else in SFV that suffers all those issues -- watery sauce? Weirdly cut chicken that looks more like kitty-cat? Old or expired tasting ingredients? Tastes like a salt-lick? Not gonna happen in pretty much any other Peruvian restaurants. Yes, any restaurant can have a bad spell, it happens. But friends of mine from Arequipa went there recently (I warned them, but they thought 'how bad can it be? How could anyone screw up some of these dishes?).
