I wrote reviews of their defunct locations in Southbury in 2019 and Wethersfield in 2015. It's a little hard to understand why some locations thrive and others die away. I guess landlord-tenant issues might be one reason. Anyway, the Fairfield Chip's that three of us had lunch in on Wednesday was pretty crowded. One reason for the crowd was the UConn women's lacrosse team, which was opening their season in Fairfield and were at Chip's for a pre-game meal. There must have been forty people in their entourage. Anyway, we had a very pleasant experience at Chip's. Service was great but the real attraction at Chip's is their gargantuan menu that features breakfast all day. So if you're a fiend for eggs, pancakes, waffles, breakfast burritos, French toast, in every possible permutation, variation, and combination - well let's just say you won't go hungry here. Our party of three dug into that big breakfast menu and went with Smores pancakes ($11.99), a spinach and tomato omelet ($11.49), and an egg and pancake plate ($8.50). The omelet was mine, but choosing what I wanted INSIDE the omelet was only half the battle, because I had to choose what STYLE of omelet I wanted. Now that unusual option meant I had to choose between a homestyle (traditional diner preparation with the ingredients mixed up in the eggs) or "light and fluffy" style. Now, of course, I had to ask what L&F was, and I learned they are kind of puffy, as though they were inflated with an air hose. The fillings are piled on one side of the omelet, so the other side can be folded over it, and the finishing touch is more fillings piled on top of the whole thing. My Spinach and Tomato Light and Fluffy Omelet was pretty tall and actually looked more like a pancake than an omelet, but it was excellent. And speaking of excellent, so were the home fries. Service was fine, our waiter was efficient, attentive, and friendly. Pricing was very reasonable for breakfast in a NYC suburb. Chip's Family Restaurant at 525 Tunxis Hill Road was cited for four priority item violations for the improper cold holding of food, raw food stored over ready-to-eat food in the walk-in cooler, foods held past seven days in the walk-in cooler, and improper hot holding of soups, according to the Department of Health. The restaurant also had five priority foundation violations for various reasons, including units having improper or inaccurate temperatures. A manager from the restaurant did not respond to a request for comment. read more

Stopped by Chips Family Restaurant in Fairfield, CT for brunch, and it definitely hit the spot. Classic diner feel with a massive menu and hearty portions. I ordered the Mexican Skillet, which came with a generous serving of seasoned home fries, sautéed onions, sausage, and melty cheddar cheese, topped with eggs (I got scrambled and over easy). I've had only good experiences at the Chip's in Orange, so when my family and a friend's family wanted someplace to have supper after the kids played together, I was happy to learn there was a Chip's nearby. But this was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had; I'm really amazed at how bad the service was. The adults ordered a pot roast and the beef stew from the specials menu, and the salmon florentine and one of the grain/salad bowls from the regular menu. We ordered a macaroni and cheese with a side of mandarin orange and a milk for the 3yo. I asked what soups were available, and the waiter had to go check. After my partner and I chose soups to go with our beef stew and pot roast, I had to remind the waiter that my friend's salmon florentine came with soup - based on subsequent events, I would guess that if I hadn't done that, he never would have gotten his soup. Other than that the salmon florentine and the grain bowl seemed fine, as did our chicken noodle soups and lentil soup. The pot roast was described on the specials menu as coming with carrot and potato. I figured this was, well, a pot roast, in which these things were cooked together. The waiter had to go to his manager about it to ask about it, since it wasn't available on his order-taking app, but ultimately concluded I could order it. When it arrived, I was given a plate with indeterminate meat covered in gravy, some sauteed mixed vegetables, and rice pilaf. I asked about this, and after a long interlude was told that there were no potatoes in the restaurant. I was a little confused and said so, and was eventually offered the chance to pick something else from the menu to substitute; I chose the turkey dinner, described on the menu as coming with stuffing, mashed potatoes, sauteed vegetables, and cranberry sauce. Since potatoes of any kind were unavailable, I accepted rice pilaf as a substitute, and asked for steamed vegetables in lieu of the sauteed vegetables. The beef stew was an unpalatably sour brown mush, but my 1yo had a few bites so it can't have been all bad, but neither my partner who ordered it nor I was inclined to eat any. Meanwhile, the other adults, having finished their soups, had their meals for quite a while before my 3yo was brought a bowl of macaroni and cheese, which also seemed fine. When I got the turkey, there was no rice or cranberry sauce. I asked about the rice, and the waiter said the vegetables were instead of the rice. I said that didn't seem like how it was presented on the menu, and I'd thought it was listed as coming with both vegetables (which I requested steamed instead of sauteed) and potato (for which I had accepted rice as a substitute), but he was unresponsive to that, and by this point it was late, our 1yo was asleep, and our 3yo was tired, so I declined to press the issue. By the end of the meal, I also noticed my 3yo had never gotten his side of mandarin oranges, so I asked about it, and he was given a comically small 1-ounce plastic container with a couple slices. While we were packing up, I also noticed he'd never gotten his milk, only a water, and that I'd never gotten my cranberry sauce. We found this charming restaurant when we were visiting family in September. We wanted a nice sit-down place for breakfast and Chip's was conveniently located. The service was great and the food was great too! Omelettes cooked just right and pancakes made perfectly. Our server heard we were visiting from San Diego and she introduced us to the new manager who was also from our area. Very personable touch! We were just in town again for Thanksgiving and stayed a week. We came to Chip's twice for breakfast, once for dinner AND we attended a Rotary meeting that was catered by Chip's too! All the food was delicious and the staff was so friendly. We were fortunate to meet Adam, the owner, and he was super friendly. As a fellow Rotarian, he was the one to let me know about the Rotary club meeting in town! My only regret with this trip, is that we didn't eat here even more often! But it was perfect for what we wanted i got the 2 x 2 x 2 which was two eggs, two bacon and two pancakes. It was perfect and enough for me. My daughter got the kids fancy pants. First time coming to a Chip's Family Diner yesterday afternoon. Have always seen Chip's restaurants and their hallmark yellow signs around CT and had read many years of magazine "Best" lists and Chips was always mentioned, but had never been until now. It's a classic and traditional family diner-style restaurant, in similar vein to an IHOP or restaurant you'd find at a smaller, more casual hotel chain. Known for their pancakes but also serve lunch and dinner dishes as well. Since I love sandwiches but rarely eat them due to dietary restrictions, I ordered a rueben sandwich with french fries, of course. It's grilled with sauerkraut, cheese and dressing, and one of those types of sandwiches that really hits the spot. The french fries were very crispy and soft on the inside, really tasty and served with a long very nice quarter pickle, perfect to brighten the sandwich a bit. The utensils are another matter, haha, and have definitely seen better days. Even though this is a casual, diner-style place, all restaurants should take a cue from their service. Our waitress was so friendly, nice and also unassuming, check in with us a few times to make sure we were okay. The host when we first walked in was very friendly and offered to lower the window shade due to the bright sun (which we said no to but eventually I lowered the shade on my own). Just a very nice, pleasant atmosphere and welcoming environment. Is the food good? Definitely. Is the decor dated? Maybe. How was the service? Excellent. We did come at a quieter time, around 1:30 pm, breakfast hours will probably be bustling. *I just saw on their website that maybe a couple of locations had shut down (I remember it being a mini-chain) so this Fairfield location and an Orange/Milford location are still open. read more

We love coming here for breakfast. It literally takes us about 30 min to get here but we try to come for Mother's Day, father's day and so on... this place is always jammed packed everytime we come. The line is usually out the door and down the walkway but the line moves so fast and smoothly. The gentlemen/manager who is at the entrance is amazing. His personality livens this place up and he remembers people and faces and it makes it special. Another reason we like coming here is they offer variety and different breakfasts from other places and delicious. But also, they have options for gluten free, and vegan which is a blessing for me and my family who eat diverse. The place is pretty clean especially for the amount of flow it gets. Came here today for some pancakes for lunch, and I couldn't be happier. This Chip's location is newly renovated and looks awesome on the inside. Every table and decoration is great. I was seated and served an amazingly big stack of pancakes. For $9, these were worth every Penny. They filled me up more than I ever thought, and they were delicious. Been coming here for years but today I had an incredible service experience which I want to share. My husband and I were out for breakfast with our toddler and there was a member of the waitstaff who was incredibly sweet to her. She went out of her way to say hi, talk to her and to get her laughing. On top of this unfortunately we spilled over an open glass of water and she was so kind to come over and help clean it up without making us feel bad about it. Chip's is the home of the most amazing gluten free/vegan pancake on the planet!!! Perhaps they're the home of THE greatest pancakes in general BUT nothing can rival their GF pancake. It's perfect. It's unbelievable that something so fluffy and perfectly crispy around the edges and mushy in the middle is actually gluten free. I live hours away and crave Chip's soooo often. When I'm actually there, I must always take a to-go order of a stack too. Other pluses is having real maple syrup on every table waiting for ya as well as an array of additions to put into your pancakes from chocolate chips to even macadamia nuts. Stopped at Chips Diner while on my way to visit friends in Fairfield per their recommendation. We arrived at Chips on Saturday morning around 11:15 am. The place was pretty busy but we were able to get seated right away. Chips feels very much like an ihop or older chain restaurant. It wasn't very clean inside - the wood tables/booths are very distressed, the carpeting is stained, and the windows had interior finger prints all over them (perhaps kids were in the booth right before us and they didn't wipe it down). Service was an issue throughout our entire meal. As soon as my bf got seated (while I went to the restroom) the waitress stopped by to take our order. She then came back again as soon as I sat down, not giving me any time to look at the menu. When we were ready to order (after a normal amount of time reviewing their large menu), she was no where to be found and I had to actively catch her attention. We each ordered iced coffees, me a mimosa, and entrees. I had the chipper omelet with home fries & toast and my BF got their Philly benedict special from the seasonal menu which included a side of cinnamon bun french toast. Our food took a very long time to come out and my waitress forgot my toast. The plating wasn't the prettiest but our food was tasty. The special was a gigantic portion - many of the specials included special pancakes or French toast with them. I wish you could have just gotten one part of the special and not the other, but I guess that's how they drive up the prices. As we were eating our meals, the tables next to our booth were setup for a large party of 15-20 people. It was a high school baseball team with some parents/coaches. Once they were all seated, we never saw our waitress again. She decided it was a good idea to start collecting the table's food orders even though our table had already been cleared by the busboy and she hadn't checked on us since the food arrived. She totally abandoned us, in addition to another booth in the same section who were equally annoyed. We both had to go to the host stand to settle our tabs. While the food was good, it wasn't worth the frustration. I will not visit here again if I am in the area. read more
