    Charcoal Chicken on the Grill
    Shoshana R.

One of those local neighborhood spots where you just accept them for who they are. Small location, hard to park, not much seating, weird decor, questionable customer service at times, long lines, and you may even witness peculiar food prep once in a while. However, as long as you don't see anything out right gross you disregard it all... You Bless your food and enjoy the reason you even tolerated it all in the first place... the Charcoal Grilled Chicken cooked on the open grill as soon as you entered. Mouthwatering, juicy, flavorful, and tender are some of the great reasons that made you tolerate the hiccups in the first place. I don't eat red meat so I only order their tasty chicken which comes with warm grilled pita bread. I've tried the mashed potatoes and side salad once, they did the job. Anything else on the menu I didn't come here for so I really can't give an opinion. Side note: Always wondered if they had any association with the chirping chickens in the city... probably not bc menus are so different.

Although this place is a "chain" it's pretty good. Not Popeye's good, though. Meals such as a quarter or half chicken meals come with sides and a pita. These are a bargain for lunch. The menu also includes chicken cutlets, chicken fingers, chicken sandwiches, fried shrimps, fish fillets, and hamburgers. You'll also find sides (mash potatoes, corn, stuffing, standard fare) and salads. If you want to buy food for a group, you can buy a whole chicken and bunch of ribs to take home. The baby back ribs are grilled in front of you and brushed a few times with BBQ sauce. Juicy. 12/5/07 UPDATE: I felt lazy and didn't want to cook. I ordered a #3 meal for carry out, which consisted of a whole chicken, full rack of ribs, 3 sides and a few pitas. I chose lemon potatoes, rice & beans and corn. I also asked for a side of large fries. Damn I'm fat. My brother, wife and I enjoyed the grub, along with leftovers. I received a complimentary 2008 (sport tuned Hondas) calendar and magnet. I love being able to recommend a steakhouse that dry ages its own meats right here in the neighborhood. Yesterday, we were a bit pressed for time, so we ordered the lamb chops, skirt steak, and, of course, a nice bottle of wine. Everything was fantastic. The lamb chops were phenomenal, easily among the best I've had at any restaurant. They were incredibly flavorful, tender, and cooked to perfection. I'm usually not someone who enjoys eating the fat on meat, but the fat on these chops was rendered so beautifully that I found myself eating every bite. There wasn't a single chewy or unpleasant piece. I normally order the porterhouse or ribeye, but the skirt steak was an excellent choice when I wanted something leaner and quicker to enjoy without sacrificing flavor. The fried potato salad is another standout. It's a unique side that's absolutely worth ordering. And then there's the peppercorn sauce served with the lamb chops. It's a total mic drop. I honestly can't put into words how good it is. I found myself dipping everything in it (even my fingers ). It's that delicious! Fiorentina continues to impress every time we visit, and it's become one of my favorite places to recommend for a great steak dinner.

Not only did they make no gesture to accommodate them in any other way, this is an EXTREME ADA violation, and could have very well been a lawsuit. The manager, Jimmy, sat and watched as both my grandmother and great uncle struggled to take the stairs, no hand of assistance. When I approached him, I was told 'what's the big deal, so you had to take some stairs'. I told him my uncle fell last year and was hospitalized for 6 months, if you see someone in a walker, why would you do this? His response 'I don't know what you want me to do, buy you a drink?'. Not only was their overall service awful and food barely edible, this is one of the most unaccommodating, disrespectful, and genuinely unsafe establishments I've ever been to.

Home Bx…read morewas packed, with only a few tables remaining and all the flatscreens and a new screen behind where the live entertainment plays, broadcasting the England victory over Norway and the Argentina victory over Switzerland. It had been a while since I had been here and I was focused on the number one item on the menu: the 50oz bone in Cote de Boeuf, always medium rare, which I believe is one of the best values for carnivores in town. Once seated in the corner near the front window, I perused their new menu off the new menu from the QR code. I noticed the pork belly over chickpeas and ordered that along with a glass of red sangria. Irma took my order and I explained I wanted a fruity non fortified red sangria. It was very good. Irma forgot the bread and butter they usually serve and they brought it later after her shift ended, but left it out of my to go bag. The pork belly was very good and so crisp. The serrated steak knife was necessary. The fat was largely rendered out, but still present between the crackling skin and the savory meat underneath. It was two thick slabs over the chickpeas and a substantial appetizer for 16 bucks. Some appetites could enjoy this as a main with a salad and be fine. That would not be me this evening. I ordered the Cote de Boeuf medium rare, which comes with grilled onions and two sides, which I chose the whipped potatoes and the asparagus, the latter new to the menu. I also ordered the Lobster Mac and Cheese as an extra, which is now served with Gruyere as an additional cheese to the mix. The Gruyere is new and it adds a sharpness juxtaposed with the sweet lobster meat and puts this over the top for me. They adjoined the neighboring free table and presented the steak sizzling and pre-cut nicely from the kitchen. I tried to take a video of that moment without success. I told them to hold all the sauces they offer and just bring the citrus salt. This magnificent cut only needs the citrus salt and nothing more; though, you will find those grilled onions go well with this cut. At $125 for this hunk of bone in excellence, this is one of the best cuts served in NYC at an irrefutably great value, with the sides included, save for the Lobster Mac and Cheese. So juicy and flavorsome highlighted with the citrus salt, that pink center with the ring is evident of what the skillful chefs can do here at Home Bx. The steak at Home Bx may be aged, dry or wet, I cannot confirm; however, the edge goes to less than a handful of the other steakhouses for flavor, but none at this price. The whipped potatoes are great and are the perfect accomplishment for steak. I don't know why the whipped potatoes are served modestly for such a large steak, but they are very good. The asparagus, new to the menu, are about six large spears and are not overcooked. The salt and juice runoff from the steak go well with the asparagus counterpoint. The Lobster Mac and Cheese deserves repeat mention, with the addition of Gruyere cheese. It now has more refined and balanced flavor, with the sharp Gruyere and sweet lobster playing off each other. The Lobster Mac and Cheese is a must have here. It's that good, goes well with the steak, especially with the Gruyere, and it will be the only side not included with that 50oz tender steak. 4.3 stars! Stay tuned for part two of this review. I ordered the new pork chop on the menu and the roast chicken to go.

You cannot order a fresh carafe or pitcher of sangria with the fruit in it here, which is what I was expecting from a place headlining sangria. So your experience of the Sangria Cafe for sangria will come down to whether you like yours fortified. I like my sangria freshly made to order with just the wine and chopped fruit, but you may have a better experience at Sangria Cafe if you prefer fortified sangria. So the Manager, Elios, was superb. He told me he would let me taste the red, white and lychee versions to see which one I preferred. Given they are all fortified to an extent, I chose to order margaritas. I prefer mezcal margaritas, but they did not have mezcal at the time. So I went with the tequila classic. It was good and I had it to go for my evening at a cigar lounge. I also ordered food to go: the French cut pork chops with garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus and the braised beef short rib with small potatoes and broccoli. Here's a twist: the food was better than the adult beverage at a place emphasizing the latter. At all times, my server, Hector, was superb in his own right. Service is probably the strong suit at Sangria Cafe, followed by the food. The French cut pork chops taste like they have been marinated or at least brined. You will eat these down to the bone and you will pick up those bones to clean them. The garlic mashed potatoes were great too, but the asparagus was a bit overcooked. On balance, this $30 dish was satisfying and would have been better had they included a little gravy on the side for the mashed potatoes. The beef short rib at $38 was even tastier. I appreciate the chef took the time to get a good cut of short rib and trimmed the excess fat down to a leaner cut. The meat is inherently marbled with fat, so the flavor is already going to be as present as the savory tenderness. If you dine at a restaurant where there is excess fat on the beef short rib, know the chef there is not putting in the work to trim all that fat. Coudos to the chefs in the Sangria Cafe kitchen for their trimming work. This is even better than the pork chops and you'll savor every bite. The broccoli was overcooked here, so the chefs could restrain themselves on the cooking time for the veggies. The small potatoes were perfect and what is not to like about marbled beef and potatoes. Here they have a little gravy with cooked onions to add to the savory pleasure. The Sangria Cafe is a great place to come with friends. This place will see lots of action as the weather warms. The atmosphere is upbeat and the music is in full swing. This is a Latino and Afro Latino crowd. The kitchen and service are very good here. Perhaps I'm in the minority preferring nonfortified sangria, but I wish that were an option with the chopped fruit in it. Perhaps the majority prefers the fortified hit, but it would be nice to have it more relaxed with just the wine as summer approaches or at any time of the year. Please keep the mezcal in stock as SOP for the mezcal margs. Thanks to Elios, Hector and the chefs in the kitchen. 3.5 stars.
