Tip: Go in the morning to early afternoon where all the items are piping hot to warm. It wasn't too busy at the bakery when I came, and it was my second time coming after going to old Chinatown. Service was fast, and they are also cash only. I got the baozi which was warm and incredibly fluffy. There was a perfect ratio to bread and meat, and everything else in the bakery was also affordable. I also tried the sesame bun which was delicious too. Visited my brother in law in Chicago and walked over to this bakery on Argyle street. I had the pork dumplings! Every day.. had to visit until I left the city. The lady behind the counter was kind. She warmed it for us on request. Prices are reasonable. The area is a bit shady. :). It's located about 1/2 block west of Argyle subway entrance. Heavy construction. There was no vehicle traffic and the Argyle train station was closed. We also had the bean and almond cookies. I travelled with that pack of cookies. It's a sleeve so perhaps 24 cookies for less than $3.50. My mom loves Asian almond cookies and was not disappointed. :) Difficult to find Asian bakeries in my area. I live in lake worth. I always get the smaller sponge cakes when I come here, I tried the bigger version once but it was a bit different ... drier. I also like the square rice thing that's wrapped in bamboo leaves, bt not the smaller, triangular one that I bought today , it was made with mung beans and one small piece of Chinese sausage and a very salty laap yook (not sure what's the English name). Extremely no frills Chinese bakery. "Get in, order, get out" kind of vibes. No seating, almost no décor. Also no card, so bring cash. HOWEVER they have wide selection of extremely delicious and affordable pastries including tons of Chinese style pastries (red bean buns, pork buns, etc) and more western style treats (Italian butter cookies, hand held apple pies) so there's sure to be something for everyone. Their almond cookies are absolutely MASSIVE like 4x the size of the ones you might get at a Chinese takeout restaurant. I don't think I saw any pastries there that were over $3 (the MASSIVE red bean bun I got was $2.60 I think) you won't find a better deal anywhere else. read more

Back in the early 2020s, I was visiting a relative in Chicago and happened upon this bakery. While we were there, I ordered what seemed to be a curiosity - it was a pork and sesame cookie. I tend to enjoy savory bakery items especially from Chinese bakeries and thought it sounded like it might be delicious. We ordered maybe a dozen items that day, but it was that singular cookie that absolutely blew my mind. I've been to major Chinatowns in every major US city including some of the better known ones in San Francisco and New York City, but did not recall ever experiencing this fantastic mix of flavors in a single cookie. How had this experience escaped me and where was the NYC or SF equivalent? And if not there, where else could I experience this amazing flavor? It really sat on my mind for awhile. I even sent photos of the cookie to a friend who traveled extensively in China, and she said she hadn't had that particular cookie. Apparently, it might have been a Cantonese style cookie called little chicken or maybe what is called Phoenix cookies. But I couldn't find it again after that. And then it kind of slipped from my memory until I was going through a Reddit rabbit hole, and found that I wasn't alone. Indeed, some random Redditor who lived in NYC was experiencing the same nostalgia for the exact same random cookie from Chiu Quon. And when I finally found my way back in Chicago in 2025, you better believe a visit to this bakery was top of my mind (sorry friends and relatives - I wanted to see all of you as well!). Usually, when you think of something like this for years, you believe your mind has tricked you and it wasn't as great as your memory. And I've had that experience myself. But sometimes - almost miraculously - your mind wasn't playing mean tricks on you and the food is exactly as you remembered it or even better and that is what happened with these cookies. It's impossible to properly describe the flavor - there is an intense sweetness that is somehow counterbalanced by the sesame and pork to give off an absolutely unique flavor. Whatever it is the flavor that is undeniably delicious. I bought six containers to go with me this time. I wasn't going to have to think about this cookie for years again without a proper lasting memory. There are people who do not rate this place five stars. I have no idea what to tell them, but first, I would tell them to order the pork and sesame cookie. If you don't like that, then find yourself the nearest bridge and jump off it. There is no hope for you. For the vast majority of the rest of us, enjoy this amazing treat in Chicago. This is a no-frills bakery. It doesn't look like much on the outside, but the goods on the inside are totally legit. The first thing you need to know that this is a cash only establishment....peridot! There is no cash machine in there, so come prepared. Second, this is a small shop, and it can get crowded real fast. Third, the prices are crazy low! The most expensive item in the front case this morning was $2.10. That said, the pastries in here are just lovely. My personal favorites are the steamed and baked BBQ pork and the ham/cheese. When first introduced to char siu bao, I was totally into the steamed version. The baked ones I had tried at other places, and I didn't care for them...too much bread and not enough filling. The place does the right. The bread is very soft and the coloring on the top is a lovely brown. The filling inside is not as chunky as others I have had. It is almost like a pulled pork, which I like a lot. I love the steamed buns a lot, but I realize that the texture of the bread is not for everyone. A lot of people that I have tried to introduce to it think that it is not cooked, but it is. It looks doughy, but it is not. Again, a lovely filling of BBQ complements the pastry. The ham and cheese are great for a quick lunch or breakfast sandwich. The Queen got the egg tarts, both regular and Portuguese, and she swears by them. I can't speak on these because I am not a fan of any egg dessert. But The Doctor loved them too and there are none left. So I would say if you like egg tarts, these are a winner. read more

Got the egg custard pineapple bun and was very happy with it! Super yummy, with a good filling to bread ratio. Most of the sweetness comes from the filling. The bo lo topping is more of a crunchy crumbly texture addition, with a little bit of saltiness and not a lot of sweetness. I think this balances out the flavors very well. The employees are super nice. The bakery was less busy than last time I visited, and there were more options available- perhaps Sunday afternoons are typically a bit sleepier. Let me know how I've been living in Uptown for the past 8 years, within 5 minutes walking distance from Chiu Quon Bakery and I never visited here. What is wrong with me? Maybe the lines were deterrents- but on this particular morning, I hit it just right and there were only 5 people ahead of me and it went quickly. Anyway, I stopped in here one morning after the gym and got 4 items: Shrimp/Pork roll, Almond cookie, Ham/Cheese roll, and Pineapple pie. The pineapple pie was flaky and well balanced, wasn't too sweet or gooey- I would get this again. Ham/Cheese roll was delicious and I shared this with my dogs and they loved it too (they're big ham/cheese fans). My favorite item was the Shrimp/Pork roll. Normally, I do not eat pork, but this was speaking to me. I ate this while walking home and regretted not buying another. Almond cookie was okay. Looking forward to trying more items soon! I tried: dan taat (4/5) -- silky, eggy, and aromatic with thin, flaky crust char siu bao (3/5) -- bread to meat ratio was very off (needed more meat), filling was also rather compact and reminiscent of pulled pork which is not what I expect from char siu...sauce was on the sweeter side lotus mooncake (5/5) -- very smooth, sweet, nutty filling and an even, golden brown casing gai mei bao (3/5) -- not what I envisioned when I asked for this, but still good...like a pineapple bun filled with coconut custard...I initially believed I was getting a cocktail bun I wouldn't return for the char siu bao, but if I were with a large group to share items, I would consider trying out a bunch of their other items. read more

Yeah lines are long on the weekends, but not weekend evenings. Bring cash!!! SUCH a delicious and authentic Cantonese bakery. They have some of the best Portuguese egg tarts I've ever had, and they taste just as good after spending days in the fridge. I also LOVED their pork bbq buns. Not as good as a famous NYC bakery (ifykyk), but definitely holds their ground with how fluffy and sweet the bun is. My family and friends have been getting my Hong Kong style pastries from this Chiu Quin on Argyle since the 90s. It's reasonably priced, but only downside is that they don't accept debit or credit cards. Only cash is accepted as form of payment and there is no ATM near by. All the pastries and take home dim sum are delicious. My personal favorites are Portuguese eggs tarts, sesame ball, baked char siu bao, pineapple bun, cocktail bun, sponge cake wrapped in paper, swiss roll cake, fruit cake and fried dough sticks for congee.... That's a lot, right? Before you go in or while you're waiting in line, decide your order before they call you in line so you don't hold up the customers behind you. Another tip is go early like at 8:30-9am so you get the freshest items and the line is not too long. If you go TOO early, they don't have all the baked goods ready to sell. read more

They weren't concerned about it or them unsure of what to order. They had a ton of options and all of them had extra in another case. There was a decent line by the time the person in front of me finished. They got a second cashier starting at that point. They are CASH ONLY. I got 1 red bean bun and 1 bbq pork. The bbq had the thinnest line of bbq pork, 95% filling. The red bean bun had a bit more filling but it was mostly in one spot. The red bean tasted somewhat like grape jelly. It's usually busy because it's so popular but the line doesn't take too long and regardless, it's worth the wait. The bakery is right on Argyle street so it's very easy to get to from either the red line or the 36 or there is paid parking. There's a huge variety of pastries - some sweet and some savory. The prices are affordable as most pastries are around $2, unless you get ones with meat in them. My favorite was the sesame ball with red bean paste!
