    Fried turnip cake
    Karen C.

Literally hole in a wall, your classic Asian restaurant. Very affordable and comforting! Assorted Mixed noodle soup- their signature noodles. Good amount of noodles and generous amount of toppings such as shrimp, fishball, squid. Broth is clean and tasty, not overly salty. I particularly like how the noodles are not too soggy, it is the perfect texture. Fried turnip cake- a little different from the typical turnip cake you eat at dim sum restaurant. I believe there is some sticky rice powder in this type of turnip cake such that the texture is a bit gooey almost like mochi. Very interesting texture with crispy edges and sticky center. I saw other customers dipping it in vinegar so I copied them. Not sure if it is the right way to eat it, but the vinegar cuts through the stickiness and grease and made it tastier. Shrimp roll- So crunchy! it's like biting into paper because the skin of the roll is so well fried. There is so much filling that the appetizer alone is actually quite filling. Perfect to share for 2 or even 3 people Double Happiness is a family owned business, so don't expect attentive service. Even the condiments are the bare basics as well. Very good value and great place to have a quick meal!

    Tofu Vegetable Soup

Classic old Asian place meant to double your happiness, specializing in Teochew, a type of cooking in the Guangdong region of China. Double Happiness won't make everyone happy. It's because some people will never be happy, so fuck them. Anyone looking for authentic Chinese will be wise to check it out at lunch. There's little here for vegetarians, the only complaint, but it's good for others. Bare bones. It's not exactly a festive atmosphere here. This is why many people get takeout. Authentic though, as a place like this in rural China can easily be imagined. There's not a whole lot for vegetarians, but they do have Tofu Vegetable Soup. It's $7 for a good amount. The food here is lightly spiced. Much milder than other Chinese. The rest of the food menu is stuff like fish balls and pork. Hours are crazy. It's listed as 8 to 5, so it's best to come at lunch. This sure is not a place for a fancy dinner or that kind of spot.

Double Happiness is a Teochew noodle shop located on Argyle. This family-run restaurant is known for their Teochew noodle soups, their side dishes, and the addictive fried garlic that you can add to your noodles. I always make it a habit to visit this hole in the wall whenever I'm in Chicago. They've been a long mainstay in the Argyle neighborhood. The neighborhood has seen better days with the pandemic shutting down a lot of local business, but this restaurant remodeled a few years prior and still remains open. Prefacing my review by warning that the noodle soups all have pork in them. If you cannot eat pork, I recommend not visiting since you won't be able to enjoy their noodle soups. FOOD For our visit, we got two #6's, the Assorted Mixed Noodle Soup, the #9, the Fried Radish Cake with Egg, and the #13, the Shrimp Roll. If you don't know what to order, they have pictures behind the counter of their most popular dishes, so just point at those. The star of the show is the Shrimp Roll. Fried to perfection and full of flavor, you cannot go wrong with this. It comes with a sauce, which you can use to help enhance the flavor, but it is not necessary. The Shrimp is a perfect partner to the Noodle Soup as you can use the soup to complement the "yeet hay" of the Shrimp Roll. There are a bunch of options for the noodle soups, but they are in essence very similar. I like to get my egg noodles cut thin, but it's completely up to you. The egg noodles are better than the rice noodles, but, once again, it's completely your preference! Per the usual Teochew tradition, there are a bunch of sauces provided at the table. I heavily recommend using the fried garlic sauce and adding it to your noodle soup to give it even more flavor! The Fried Radish Cake is hit or miss. It used to be much better in the past, but there wasn't too much flavor in the actual Radish Cake this time around. If you only want one appetizer, choose the Shrimp Roll. SERVICE Standard Asian small family restaurant service. Walk in, sit down, they bring you a menu, order with the server, they bring you food, pay at the counter. Because it's standard Asian small family restaurant service, the service you receive may vary from visit to visit. The servers are very friendly with their regulars, especially if you speak the language, but they generally leave you alone otherwise. They are quite responsive if you ask for something though, but sometimes, they will disappear into the kitchen. With service like this, you know it's an authentic restaurant! COST Noodle soup ran about $11-12/bowl, which is pretty cheap. For what you are getting, the price is a steal. I can't remember how much the appetizer cost, but I think it was around $8-$9 for an appetizer. SETTING Double Happiness is a hole in the wall, so the decor isn't too much to write about. There is a TV though, which is nice if you need a distraction while you are waiting. As mentioned, Argyle has seen busier days. However, parking still might be a bit difficult during peak hours. Sometimes you can grab a spot on the main street, but there is usually parking on the side streets. Double Happiness is also right next to the train station, so if you travel by train, you can get here pretty easily. Double Happiness doesn't get too busy, so you will never have to wait for a table, especially if you come for dinner. It's great for a quick meal! Double Happiness is the ultimate hole in the wall experience. Don't let the decor fool you, you can't get a better noodle soup for a better price! 4.75/5

Dry yellow and white noodle combination
    Alexander T.

Nice mom and pop shop Tieu chow or chew chow food. Had less condiments than the usual Tieu chow restaurant. Missing the sate. Got the yellow and white noodle combination dry. Little bland without it. I would give it a 3.5 stars. Turnip cake doesn't have turnip just flower and egg. It's cash only

Teochew siu mai - meatball in broth
    Elvin C.

Food options are on the first page of the menu and I'd focus on getting a noodle soup from the multiple options there. We wound up getting an assorted noodle wonton soup and the fish fillet rice stick soup. Complementing the meal were you-tiao for soup dunking, their regional Teochew siu mai (meatball in broth), and radish cake with egg. Love adding the fried garlic condiment at the table to the soups.

    Alvin T.

Before reading here is some background on Teochew cooking, their use of flavoring is much less heavy-handed then other Chinese food. That being said, if you find yourself here order the meepok soup, chai tau kueh and siew mai (not the HK siew mai you are thinking of) The way they cook the food is nostalgic, think of your aunt cooking lunch for you. The location is discreet but upon entering you are a lot of old folks that just hang out here

Tucked into a no-frills corner on the South Side, Dai Yee's looks modest from the outside, but step in after 10 p.m. and it's pure magic. The room is packed with everybody--sneakerheads, nurses coming off shift, club kids, cops, and couples on first dates who somehow heard the legend. The vibe is chaotic in the best way: woks roaring, orders flying, and that unmistakable perfume of sizzling garlic, ginger, and chili filling the air. The food is straight-up stupid good. The Hong Kong-style salt & pepper smelts are crackly, spicy, and gone in 30 seconds. The beef chow fun has that elusive wok hei (breath of the wok) that most places only dream of, wide rice noodles slick with smoky char and tender flank steak. The black pepper beef tenderloin is velvet-soft, glossy, and aggressively peppery in a way that makes you order extra rice just to survive the happiness. The Singapore noodles are bright curry perfection, and the Mongolian beef is saucy, crispy-edged, and borderline addictive. Portions are straight out of the 90s--massive trays that could feed a family of four for under $15. Cash-only, BYOB, and everything comes out blazing hot in under ten minutes even when the place is slammed. The ladies running the show are legends: fast, funny, and they'll roast you (lovingly) if you can't handle the spice level you asked for. If you leave Chicago without hitting Dai Yee's at least once (preferably at 1 a.m. with a six-pack), you didn't really experience the city. This is real-deal, no-filter, soul-satisfying Chinese food that reminds you why we fall in love with restaurants in the first place. Dai Yee's isn't just a restaurant; it's a Chicago institution in the making. I'd wait in line in a blizzard for those smelts. See you at midnight.

Before that, I…read morechecked out a few eateries on the 4th floor of the Nordstrom building, but nothing really stood out, and honestly, none of them seemed very busy and the one restaurant Lao Sze Chuan was way too expensive, $30+ entrees were average and the place wasn't busy at all. So I decided to try Shang Noodle, which was tucked away on a side street off Grand Ave., just steps from Michigan Ave. It's across from the Nordstrom building, past Labriola's, down some steps and about a block away located on the south side of the street. As soon as I walked in, and I wasn't expecting this but the restaurant was extremely loud and nearly every seat was taken and everybody seemed to be enjoying themself, families, couples and groups. I figured that was a good sign and it signaled to me that the food was probably good! At first, the host wanted me to sit at the bar, which I politely declined because I don't usually sit at bars, also, I was there to eat, not pick up somebody! I noticed a small table open, pointed it out, and he kindly let me take it. No 'tude either! As far as my server goes, she was efficient, friendly, and very helpful with recommendations since it was my first visit and probably because I didn't look like the other customers who were more familiar with the cuisine. She suggested the pot stickers over the hot and sour soup, and the beef Chow Fun instead of chicken Chow Fun. The pot stickers were a little small, but crispy and very tasty. I also asked for some sweet and sour sauce on the side which I'm glad I did because it paired nicely with the pot stickers instead of that plain vinegar sauce they usually serve you. For my main dish, I ordered the char-grilled beef Chow Fun. The portion size was more than generous, and the char-grilled beef had a great umami flavor. A few of the rice noodles were a bit firm, likely undercooked, but overall though it was quite enjoyable. What I appreciated the most about Shang Noodle was the value. $18 for the beef Chow Fun and $9 for the pot stickers felt reasonable to me, considering it was on the dinner menu, the portion sizes were humongous and the restaurant was located on the Near North Side, which is usually quite pricey. I'll definitely be back, though next time I may try lunch instead, or go with friends of mine.
