argyle location has been my favorite place in the city for years - their barbecue pork buns and moon cakes are delicious

This place is definitely comparable to some of the best Chinese bakeries I've had in San Francisco or New York. They have 2 locations, one in Chinatown and this one in Uptown. Fairly small space inside with a few tables to dine-in, but most come for to-go. I came on a Sunday afternoon and there was a short line. It moved pretty quickly and I ordered in about 15 minutes. I love how they have traditional dim sum in addition to the normal bakery items. Got a shrimp rice roll, egg tart, bbq pork bun, and a steamed pork/Chinese sausage bun. Everything was nice and warm and tasted great. Would definitely recommend for anyone in the north side of the city and don't want to go all the way to Chinatown. read more

A kind and generous friend brought me some Portuguese egg tarts, BBQ baked buns and custard buns from Chiu Quon, which is apparently the oldest bakery in CHI's Chinatown! *The Portugese egg tarts were on the bigger side, perfectly custardy and not too sweet. *The BBQ baked buns are the best I've had in the midwest. SF still reigns supreme but good enough for out here - although a just a smidge skimpy on the filling if you ask me! But I hear the prices here are VERY reasonable so can't complain. *I was most confused by the cream bun. It was still soft and delicious but not really what I expected from a 奶油包! read more

This has been my fave bakery in Argyle since I was a little girl. I love the variety of goodies they offer. My mother and I love to stop in on an early Monday morning and buy the following: Sesame Balls with red bean paste filling, cheese bread, coconut bread, freshly wrapped rice noodle rolls with dried shrimp, and scallions, fried beef buns, shumai, and my all time favorite breakfast noodles with carrots, celery, ham pieces, fried eggs, coated in sesame oil with a side of sweet soy sauce. read more

It's an ok bakery but not really worth it for those who are used to Asian baked goods. This is from someone who used to frequent Chinatown in NYC Pros -authentic Chinese baked goods -cheap Cons -not sure who said service was quick but we were 3rd in line and did not get our order for 20 minutes. They were taking their time with no rush and did not try to move fast to meet customer demand at all. They were moving so slow it seemed like on purpose. Everyone on line even the OG chinese people were pissed -the baked good selection is not really much different than stuff you can get from dimsum which has a vaster selection so I rather just go to dimsum -people in line often don't know what they want and hold up the line for everyone else. No cheap Asian baked good is worth being practically ignored by the workers. Love this bakery! My mom has been taking me here since I was a kid. She would always grab me a bunch of buchi. For those that don't know what that is, its fried rice dough dipped in sesame seeds with a sweet black bean filling. Its sooooo good. The texture is wonderful and this bakery makes them so fresh. I was able to take my husband here with me as I craved some last week, and he got some coconut bread and I also ordered the Portuguese egg tart. Everything satisfied this pregnant girl's sweet tooth. Can't wait to be back!! Also, you can't beat their prices. Each bakery item averages about $1.30, so you can easily load up on your favorites. Such a great deal. Not sure who to believe. Hit the Chi Quon in Chinatown last week and noticed the buns were much cheaper. Weird right. I ask Whatsup? They let me know that the uptown location is no longer theirs. Mold! Absolutely revolting When I requested two egg tarts, the lady at the store handed me two that looked noticeably older than the rest. To my horror, one of them was moldy. It's appalling that they think it's acceptable to sell expired pastries to their customers. read more

In these COVID days, I've been craving Asian food more than usual! Watching YouTube videos of travel and food drove my cravings to a new high the night before. My option is to start baking or hit up CQ for a creamy, custardy, sweet egg tart. Too much work! So I decided I hit up the CQ first thing in the morning, well after my meetings. Egg tarts, both regular and Portuguese, BBQ pork bun are a must have. Everything else from the custard bun, ham sui gok (fried pork dumpling), even stuff I normally don't get like sesame pork cookie or mango pudding, I GOTS!! Those cravings were strong! The place hasn't changed much during the pandemic. New plastic shields were resurrected, but they're still *cash only*. Most items are around a $1 and change and same delicious goodness. read more

This place is my and my wife's go-to for Portuguese egg tarts and other Chinese baked goodies (cha shao bao/char siu bao 叉烧包 and ji wei bao 雞尾包 are my other favorites). The Portuguese egg tarts are perfectly creamy with the flaky crust and great texture, and my wife and I always get enough to last us a few days (if we exercise self-control, that is). We haven't yet tried their dim sum items but it's something I've been wanting to do, as well as their youtiao (fried dough) and doujiang (soy milk). Ha, this Chiu Quon bakery is another one we have visited countless times but I never bothered to review. It's the same story here as it is at their flagship bakery on Wentworth Ave - a long standing and reliable staple for excellent Hong Kong style pastries and mainstream dim sum items and at great values. We picked up some BBQ pork and ham-and-egg buns on this Monday afternoon snack stop. There's no seating here any more (and there wasn't much to start with anyway) and it's strictly a carryout shop now. The buns are $1.70 now (used to be $1.20), but they're still great values and they're only keeping up with rising costs like everyone else. One downside with this location is that there is limited street parking and it's metered. Fortunately for us, I usually just park wherever and wait not very long while the wife runs in for the goods. Just like their storefront and signage, I hope nothing ever changes here! read more

Do not leave this place without a Portuguese egg tart, BBQ bun, or egg custard bun. They also have a location in Chinatown that is just as good. Fine variety of Chinese bakery which has been at this location nearly 50 plus years or so. Try a few of these tasty delights for a rather fair price for delicious desserts. Our family went there today and it seems like a time wrap to see the same few people still working there. It's much cleaner than before with a nice ceiling. Favorite bakery by far. Everything they make is delicious but my absolute favorite items are their bean baby moon cakes (so much more moist and flavorful than most, though they're mini and don't have an option with egg inside) and their egg cup cakes (I don't know what to call these but they're like eggy, soft, clouds of angel food type cake exploding from cupcake wrappers). I go to Chiu Quon every few weeks because of how delicious their BBQ Pork Buns are! I also love their sponge cake which is always so fluffy and soft. The owner is so kind as well, this time I went in and he gave us 2 extra buns at the end of the day. The prices are so affordable which makes the food even better. I love a good bakery, and I love egg tarts, so there's a lot to love here. I've definitely had better egg tarts (but I'm spoiled and went to high school in one of New York's Chinatowns) but these are still solid and good for sustaining the craving. I also tried their sesame pork cookie because I was super intrigued, and it was definitely interesting. It had the oiliness of pork but also the bread-y texture of a pastry or thicker cookie. Not my favorite to be honest, but it seems popular enough since I saw a fresh batch being made when my friend and I stopped by at night. The man behind the counter gave us free sesame balls, which I thought was really nice, and didn't really explain why. It made a good Argyle visit even better. read more

Hubby and I cannot pass up the chance to stop by every time we are in the area. We absolutely love their Portuguese egg tarts and we usually get a ridiculous number of them whenever we are here (these are the best ones in Chicago). Their other baked goods are also just as delicious such as their paper wrapped cakes, pineapple custard buns, and BBQ pork buns. I just recently discovered this little gem. Only been to the one on Argyle. I have a feeling there is a secret menu, because I have seen Chinese speaking people coming in to pick up large orders and recently found out that they make a few hot dim sum dishes that are not on display. When I asked, the server told me that there is no menu. So, I am on the hunt to see what all other goodies they have! I think it will require a Mandarin speaker. My favorites are the sponge cakes and bean paste pastries, but I am sure the pork bun is delicious and can't wait to try it. The rice roll only had a few small shrimp in it, so I won't get that again - mostly just soft rice dough. There is also a hot soy milk beverage I learned about from another customer in line, but they only have it certain days. read more

This is a bakery in the uptown neighborhood, very easy to pass by as you're just walking along. Keep in mind this is cash only place, but a lot of the items are fairly cheap. Freshly made & lots of variety, just make sure to come at a decent time to ensure there are plenty available. There are also seats in there if you decide to grab a few pastries & eat, or you can grab a whole bunch like my family & I & take it home to go. Most items are just a few bucks & can be easily eaten right away or reheated. The bread is light, sweet & airy & has many different fillings such as egg tart, pork bbq, egg & ham, ham & cheese, chinese sausage & more. The only reasons for the 4 stars is that sometimes there is a line & I've seen people that are inconsiderate that cut & the people there don't always seem welcoming, like they don't smile, they're just there because they have to be there vibe. I managed to purchase two breakfast type sandwiches, three smaller cookies, and a large almond cookie for under $5. Before you step front into the shop you need to be prepared to quickly look at the food selection and order. The shop is very small so the person at the cash register likes to keep things moving along. Bring cash, the food is so cheap that a card would slow you down. Always save room for the egg tart from this cute, efficient, CASH ONLY bakery. I also LOVE the BBQ pork bao and the coconut cream bao. Holy sesame balls! I'm a huge fan of sesame balls and the ones here are the best I've ever had. The outside of the jin deui is so soft and just melts in your mouth. The red bean paste inside was the best I've ever had as well and just was so delicious. And at just 70 cents a piece, what a great deal!!!! I also got a Steamed Bao with BBQ Pork, Egg and Chinese Sausage inside to have for dinner. The bun itself was so soft and airy and all packed inside was delicious! Yum yum and YUM!
