Two tortas and a soda: $31.30

I have mixed feelings about this place. The torta filling was enjoyable and the sauces spicy like I like them. Unfortunately the bolillo (bread) was absolutely hard, bordering on stale. I tried cutting the torta with a knife and fork and it was impossible. Bitting into the bread was rough. At first I thought it was just mine until my husband mentioned that the bread cut the roof of his mouth. I may give this place another shot because I love tortas ahogadas. Hopefully they figure out the bread situation.

Crunchy tacos aka tacos dorados. Please try this!! Amazing

I been supporting Chiva tortas for over 10 years. Used to frequent their taco truck. When I found out they opened closer to me I was so happy . Crunchy tacos or tacos dorados is my fav . Imagine a crunchy potato filled taco with carnitas and onions and veggies drenched in spicy salsa . Amazing . Must try at el Mercado

I think their specialty is in their name, tortas. Because I had the tacos dorados and they were very disappointing. They are served cold and with barely any filling in them. The carnitas were not good, perhaps overcooked? And they are missing the queso seco and sour cream that make complete theme. Though the salsa picante is amazing! It is spiiiicy! I asked other people who I saw eating the tacos dorados and they agreed with my poor experience.

A huge congratulations to Chiva Torta for opening a new location within the Northgate Mercado in Costa Mesa. I've been going to their food truck in Santa Ana for 10+ years and it's heartwarming to see them in action at their new location. The Northgate Mercado is huge, but you can find the Chiva Torta in the back right coroner of the building close to where they have the tables and fountain that look like the plazas in Mexico. It grand opening weekend for this market so it was buzzing with tons of people. I arrived around 11 AM and Chiva Torta already had a bit of a line. I waited about 10 minutes which is roughly the same amount of time that I wait at the food truck location. My husband and I shared our usual order, which is one Torta Ahogada with extra onions and four tacos dorados de papa con carne. Their menu outlines a variety of meat options for the torta ahogada and tacos dorados, but the carnitas option is an absolute must! Thank me later. The food was perfect. One thing I love about Chiva Torta is their execution, the food is consistent in its presentation and taste. It always hits! This location takes card and you will notice that the prices are a little higher than the food truck. Understandably so, as they have higher costs at this location. It was also so nice being able to sit with a table and chair. Please give them a try during your visit to the Mercado, your stomach won't be disappointed.

Can never go wrong with authentic Mexican food. My friend has been raving about how his hometown in Guadalajara is famous for their special wet sandwiches known as a torta ahogada which is smothered in onions drenched in a delicious tomato sauce, packed with meat in a french baguette. I can't really compare to other torta ahogadas since I never had them before until now, but this certainly lived up to the hype. The baguette was toasted to a crisp which maintained its crunch despite being drenched in the delicious spicy sauce and the sandwich was packed with juicy carnitas. The onions added a nice crunch to the sandwich. Make sure to get a lot of the limes and radishes by the mini salsa bar next to the cash register. Employees are all friendly and the menu is small, but has a good amount of options to choose from as well as pricing is average. The torta costed $13 without any extra add-ons.

Chiva Torta is one of the many stands at the new Mercado Gonzalez Northgate Market, a large foodhall and grocery store for Mexican food. They also have a truck in Downtown Santa Ana. They are my favorite of the ones I have tried. Very friendly, and incredibly quick service as well. I got the Ahogada Torta, and it was delicious. The sandwich is drenched in a tasty tomato sauce, but the bread and meat still retain a crispyness (and I took it to-go!! imagine if I ate it there). The meat was very flavorful and the portions were large. I also got a taco de canasta with papas filling, and it was also very tasty. I think that one probably would benefit from getting eaten there more than to-go, but it was still very tasty. Overall, huge fan of this place and it is totally worth checking out if your at the food hall.

Here at Northgate Market in Costa Mesa and tried different places. Chiva Torta and their crispy tacos (Tacos Dorados) was a family favorite.

We had the torta ahogada. The carnitas were way over cooked. To the point it felt like eating bones.

I went on a Friday night and it was VERY lively! There was a band playing by the bar and it was packed! People were drinking, dancing, hanging out. All of this is happening in a supermarket! Lots of food vendors to check out and all of it looked delicious! I don't remember the names of the places my friend and I ordered food from, but I had a chile relleno burrita, seafood cocktail, and pozole. I've never really had chile relleno, so I decided to just go for it and try something different even though there were other options that were more my preference. It was alright. Good thing it was only $5. The seafood cocktail was delicious! They did not skimp on the seafood and everything in it tasted so fresh. Pozole wasn't terrible, but just like my burrita, it was a bit on the bland side. Maybe my palate skews too heavily towards salty, but I felt like a little salt here and there would've really improved the flavors in everything we ordered. Overall the quality/freshness was there! Regarding the market part, nothing special. Maybe a little more selection than your typical Northgate, especially in the liquor department. Their wall of tequila was impressive. I will definitely be back again to try the other foods! In fact, I may just come all the way out here to do grocery shopping from time to time. I saw a guy doing some shopping with a cocktail in his cart and I want to live that life. Bro definitely had the right idea.

During my recent visit, Wendy at cashier station 5 on 6.13.2026 at around 7:30pm provided extremely disrespectful service and openly stated that she did not care enough to learn the pricing codes while scanning items. This raises concerns about pricing accuracy, not only for me but for other loyal customers as well. Fortunately, the employee assisting with bagging demonstrated far more professionalism and took the initiative to correct the mistakes caused by Wendy's lack of attention and concern. I hope management addresses this issue, as customers deserve courteous service and confidence that they are being charged accurately.

It was so soft and cooked to perfection! It was almost sweet and the skin so flavorful. It was a side of white rice with a sweet tone to it and fresh veggies. I will definitely order this again! Husband LOVES their Pomegranate Margherita's and I can't get enough of their Enchilada's (Cheese, Chicken) and their Crunchy Taco's (Shredded Beef is my Fave!).
