Living Ghost Town [Chloride AZ] It's quiet but definitely not a ghost town located 22 miles from Kingman. Not to be confused with the ghost town in Chloride, New Mexico, this place is actually an old inhabited mining town. The town was founded in the 1860's when silver was discovered. During mining days the town had a bank, hotels, barber shops, a pool hall, saloons and restaurants, some of these structures are still there, cool preserved buildings... about 2,000 people lived in Chloride then. There is a working Post Office on site. The mines shut down when workers went to fight in WWII. The cemetery outside of town is one of the state's oldest located on Patterson Road, even though the cemetery has recent burials, there are many unknown and old graves, some of the headstones dated back to the early 1900's. The main road is on Tennessee Avenue, we drove around and looked at the old houses, we passed by a metal yard art. We saw an old service station that once pumped gas when Chloride was one of the busiest and richest mining town during its heyday. In front were some vintage gas pumps that once pumped gas for thousands of cars and trucks. That service station is now someone's private residence. There was an antique store but it was closed at the time. We went shopping at the Mineshaft Market general store/visitor center for little souvenirs and some chips to munch on. We had lunch at Yesterday's Restaurant. Next to the restaurant is an 1860's era rooms w/ air conditioning, TV and WiFi - the Shep's Miners Inn|Hotel. So definitely alive and not a ghost town. If you're heading to or from Las Vegas you cannot miss the "ghost town" Chloride. About 5 minutes away from the freeway this town is eccentric with lots of photo ops! Top tip- stop by the general store where they'll give you a free map and advice what to check out. read more

Went on a Thursday and only the general store was open. Clerk is a wealth of local knowledge and very personable. Store prices are reasonable. So many tourists were visiting looking for the attractions known to be available however the petroglyphs aren't worth it if the 3 antique stores refuse to open during week days and/or poster hours. Suggest calling ahead to the motel or general store to verify what is open before making the 4 miles trip off Hwy 11. read more

I first visited Chloride to see the Purcell murals in 2008. I returned with some friends in early December 2018. Not much has changed. The town isn't really a ghost town. People live and own businesses here. It is a tourist place. It's also a stop that Pink Jeep will make to show you a Western ghost town. It impresses people from the East. There are some shops that sell hand made jewelry and there's a sense of oddity about the town. Either it wasn't there or I drove by without paying that much attention, but the one place has a group of gnomes inside the wall and there's a sign that says Gnome Retirement Area. From the edge of the town, you leave the pavement and then can drive to see the murals. Check the Yelp listing for the Purcell murals for that part of Chloride. read more

Hilarious. It's not a long drive and the people of this town came up with a way to attract people. It's not an authentic Ghost Town, but it checks that box on your list if you're doing the drive from Grand Canyon to Vegas and want to make a touristy stop and take some photos. read more

If you are looking for a real ghost town this is not it! There is a jinky little town of false facades called a museum. Some of the buildings look like they may be possibly original in the town. People live here. How I don't know. There looks like there is an artist's commune here and if you go all the way up there are some murals and some Indian petroglyphs. If you have a sturdy truck I'd say attempt it if you want but it's rocky and bumpy and you will die if you try this in a regular car. I was unimpressed but the people who still live out here need to survive somehow. I will provide photos so that you can see the town without having to make the trek out there! I know people live here and they count on the tourism to survive but it's just not worth it. read more

We drove through this little ghost town as a quick 15 minute pit stop on the way to Kingman, AZ. Chloride has an interesting cemetery, with most headstones and markers being made out of "found" crafty items. In fact, the same could be said for the whole town. Chloride residents decorate their town with found items like glass bottles and scrap metal. Another point of intrigue was a sort of Old Western district set up behind the playground area. As we drove by we seen 3 people dressed up in historic Western fashions. Apparently they do reenactments here with shoot outs and everything. Speaking of the Old West, I did spot a few Confederate flags flying around...There were a couple of antique shops, a restaurant, and a bar in town. We have been here a few times over the years. When coming from Vegas we head toward Kingman and seem to always stop here. We go to the old cemetery there is no many old grave sites. It is so quiet and peaceful. Then when riding into the little town you will see the old bank and little jail and train station of course most things are really old and starting to fall apart which is really sad to see, Make sure to pick up the free little map at the little market as you head into the town on the right side. There are some really neat little Antique shops on some of the streets, Bottle trees! A woman puts bottles on the trees and the trees grow with them. It is pretty cool to see. We love old places and there is a lot of history here. Neat ghost town that is a must to see once or twice. If you like site seeing and like old places with lots to see make sure to make this one of your stops! read more

This a fun area to take a break off Hwy 93. Grab a cold drink at the little store or grab some grub at the only restaurant. Might just see a gun fight at the Cyanide Springs Corral. Nice little house on the prairie town park. Lots of photo opportunities. Just past the town on Main Street the pavement ends and you can see the giant rock murals. Warning not recommended for low rider cars. Well marked just watch for the painted rocks with arrows. read more

Everything that was to be open is closed. The Visitors Center is open but they said most everything is closed. The road to the Roy Purcell Murals is so bas that you should have a 4 wheel drive truck to get there. Big rocks sticking out of the ground and washes across the road.You can drive around and see old buildings etc and some old mining equipment and some homes that are occupied but the town needs work for it to be a good site to visit. read more

We love the little town of Chloride. I've been out there a half a dozen times over the years and even spent a weekend at their little motel. It's not a complete ghost town as there are a few businesses still in operation there.They have a bar, motel, post office, general store and a few souvenir/antique shops. They have cowboy shoot outs for the little kids as well as the big little kids. It's a quiet town off the beaten path. You'll never see crowds of people here. That's what I like about it. If you like old west history and you want to get away from the crowds of people then this little town is the place for you. read more

Took a day trip out to Chloride, AZ while staying Vegas and enjoyed ourselves in this little unique town. We parked the car and started walking around. We found it eerily quiet and wasn't sure anyone was around. Some of the homes are creatively decorated with unusual items such as bottles, rocks, kitchen items, etc. Eventually we bumped into a photographer who gave us a brief history of present Chloride. We walked over to the restaurant and found plenty of people, young and old, singing karaoke. The staff was very welcoming and shared stories of the town and its residents. Chloride has special events through the year celebrating its legacy. It was fun stepping back in time. read more

Only a few miles off the highway and worth a 15-30 minute stop. Not much to see byway of Ghost Town, but we did see several jackrabbits and the elusive quail which made the stop! Don't hesitate to stop at the Shady Lady's antique store- the owner was amazingly friendly and had fascinating yard-art. Like nothing I've seen! The rest of town seemed a little cold and creepy, though we didn't make it during a reenactment day- so maybe that opinion would have been different! read more

The best thing about this place is its brochure. It is not well maintained nor are any of the shops worth visiting. Don't waste your time.

We have a camping spot just outside of Chloride and love this place! From the eclectic yard art to the friendly people it is our kind of place. Try one of the restaurants (Yesterdays or the Prospector), or stop by the VFW for food and drink. They usually have gunfights at "Cyanide Springs" every couple of weeks. Interesting little town. It's a 'living ghost town' so it has about 200ish residents. There is a little historic area for tourists. It's a small area for gun fights. All the buildings were locked, so we couldn't look inside. Was disappointed there wasn't more to see or do in regards to the ghost town. This is a fun free little ghost town we took our RV to. They were free and we watched a gun fight at high noon on Saturday, Then we watched a free movie the in the old time cinema. They have an Ice cream shop and souvenirs right at the ghost town, We were treated like VIPS. We were showed mining technics and got to pan for gold. The volunteer staff really enjoyed helping. read more
