The inside was deliciously fruity and not too sweet. The outside was a rich chocolate and soon it was all gone. That lychee bonbon changed me. The chocolates from here are ridiculous, RIDICULOUS. So good. Did I say they were good? I first had them at Murray's Cheese for a chocolate and cheese class they had. There was a very nice woman from Chocolate Moderne there who gave us the whole history behind the shop, and a breakdown of each little chocolate which were each thoughtfully paired with a cheese. The best chocolates in New York. The best chocolates and pairings we had and have been serving at dinner parties at home are: Baked apple chocolate with aged Vermont cheddar. Espresso chocolate with Up In Smoke Chevre (this one will blow your mind) Pear chocolate with aged gouda. Through a narrow lobby and off the street, Chocolat Moderne is tucked on the 9th floor off the beaten path. Please do not let this discourage your New York chocolate trekking -- it is worth taking the extra step (or, if preferred, elevator ride) to visit. This chocolatier is absolutely stocked with a decadent selection (and I do mean selection and decadent) hosting rack after rack of freshly created bonbons. The lady herself, Joan Coukos, and her hubby were the hands-on reps at the counter, so the charming customer service was stellar. Bonbons are painted in perfectly tempered shell molds (Valrhona has never been in better form) with filled centers that absolutely ooze with a bravado of focused flavors -- from the trending and expected sea salt caramel and liquor-splashed ganaches, to oreintal persuasions such as persimmon peach and shiso lime. Pieces were $2.5-$3.5. Bars $8. Chocolat Moderne has middle man retailers such as D&D and Whole Foods that offer some of their products. However, I would strongly recommend visiting the NY location if it's available to your schedule -- you deserve it! read more

If I had to name a favorite chocolate, it would be chocolate covered cherries, and if I had to choose again, it would be these from Chocolate Moderne. They have vodka in them. They look like lug nuts that were shaped with a machete and dusted red. They gleam like some hot guy's muscle car. The box with that satin sash like they just won a beauty pageant... Well, they did. Truly a top-class experience. Only five stars somehow feels like we are not doing Chocolat Moderne justice. After being alerted of Chocolat Moderne via a Japanese website, we visited this establishment over the holiday weekend seeking both unique sweets for friends and family and to sate our curiosity of how Chocolat Moderne compares to Japanese brands which we frequently purchase. Jim was amazingly patient and thorough with us, allowing us to sample almost every chocolate piece that he had on hand while taking time to assist us in customizing our purchases. The chocolate pieces on offer are of an excellent variety, taste, and texture, yet are also finely balanced and pleasing to the eye. Those with a taste for caramel, more exotic fruit flavors, and ganache will be particularly ecstatic with the selection available. We spent over an hour in their showroom and could not have been more pleased with the product and the service that Jim provided. Jim was also kind enough to hold on to our purchase for later pick-up so we wouldn't have to carry them around in the hot NYC afternoon. The showroom may be hard to locate due to there not being a storefront and it being on the 9th floor, so please be on the lookout for a chalkboard sign which will indicate the entrance to the correct building. I happened to be in the neighborhood for brunch and Google led me to Chocolat Moderne. What an amazing discovery. When you walk in, the first thing you see is all the chocolate-making equipment and I happened upon Joan, the owner and chocolatier herself, working on a batch. Then her husband Jim came out to greet me and led me through the process of choosing a custom 24 chocolate box as a gift for my friend's wedding. I sampled a few of the chocolates at Jim's urging while there and was blown away at the interesting and exquisite flavor combinations (my favorite was the persimmon white peach caramel that was a part of the Japanese collection). I'm looking forward to going back and trying many more (I've got my eye on the adzuki bean and shiso lime). I've eaten a lot of chocolate in my day and Chocolat Moderne's truffles are some of the best that I've had. Plus the service really can't be beat--Jim and Joan were both warm, informative, and happy to answer any and all of the questions I had. Maybe I just have commitment issues, but ascending 9 floors is a lot to ask of someone, even for tasty chocolate from friendly folks. After getting inside (I knocked because the sign is unclear, which seemed to be a bothersome interruption for them**), I tried 4 samples out (chipotle, lavender, and 2 others) and looked around the operation *Granted, I hate elevators and this one is slow, but I felt trapped to buy something once I walked in. **I understand they were actually doing something since this is a production facility that's more sensitive to climate-controlled conditions than normal retail shops, but didn't feel too welcomed. ^Well it's always supremely helpful helpful to include 'chocolates' in the Most Reviewed for a chocolatier, Yelpbot. read more

Why is this place not more well known? They are seriously in my top three of go-to chocolate places in the city. As others have mentioned, the owners are amazing, sweet, and patient. They will chat with your forever about chocolate making and flavor combinations. I went here to get a chocolate holiday gift for my boss this year and it was a huge hit. Him and his family loved the creative fillings and the "modern" pop art look of all the chocolate bars. I went here to get some of the Greek Easter Eggs that were advertised on New York Daily News and I was not disappointed! This place is hidden and has to be accessed by elevator. It was raining when we went, so the sign wasn't out front and we had to ask the doorman. Don't give up if you don't see a sign! It is at this address! The chocolate is beautiful, unique and exciting! Inside of the Easter Eggs were fillings such as baklava, honey thyme caramel and milk ganache with figs. One of the best chocolatiers in NYC. It achieves beauty, flavor, and creativity in all of its chocolates. During holidays they have extra-speccial chocolates. For example during Valentine's Day they have heart-shaped bonbons and during easter they have large decorated eggs (made of chocolate). My favorite chocolates are those from the international collections (e.g. Greek, Japanese) as those have the most powerful exotic flavors. The dark chocolates with a hint of spice here are the best. Try the spicy Japanese shichimi pepper chocolate or the "havana heat", made with Madagascan ganache and habanero pepper. If you stop by the actual location on 20th street, they often have a bunch of samples out so you can try them all. Only thing is the boozy chocolates don't taste very boozy, but maybe that's a good thing for some people. read more

A buddy of mine who does NYC food tours set up a visit here with my Wife and I along with another couple. First off, it's crazy. You go into a building and head to the 9th floor. On that 9th floor is a set of doors that resemble an apartment entrance. You walk in and you see an open studio that is Chocolat Moderne. Now we weren't sure what to expect. It's chocolate, right? Well, one of the owners, Jim, was asking us all about our specific tastes. As he did this he offered up a couple of samples to see if we found what we wanted. How can you resist a chocalate named Madame Xstasy??This is chocolate made with artistry and love, pricey but worth every dime and more interesting in flavor combinations than I've had from any other chocolatier-from Jacque Torres to Neuhaus to Vosges(which has some bizarre combos that are off-putting). The chocolate gems here make you sigh as you eat them, so pretty that sometimes you just want to look at them. My sister, having her cake and eating it too, took pictures of them before she popped a few into her mouth. Chocolat Moderne uses Valrona as the base, and you can taste the quality in every savory bite. Try the different flavors here...pistachio praline is marvelous, the bar with the sea salt peanut praline divine, the lychee chocolate(Les Nymphes) sublime, the pumpkin praline nice if you like pumpkin spices, the fruit and berry bar outstanding...I wonder if owners and employees are diabetics because they are not wolfing down the inventory. Service here is as sweet as the chocolate you want to keep buying from them.The owner's husband is so friendly and so affable you feel like buying something every time you see him.. One late weekend day I passed by them(the chocolate workshop/factory is on the 9th floor, not street level) and he was outside trying to promote the business. Excellent chocolate with some truly original flavors. I'll illustrate why I like this place with a story about one flavor: A chocolate bon bon, filled with salted caramel...and kalamata olive. I have been in the chocolate business a number of years and have even attended open houses at their factories/workshops. I must say that Chocolat Moderne is among the top 5, at least, that I would rate them. I don't like grapefruit but was totally blown away by Ms. Coukos' "La Dolce Grapefruit" bon-bon.
