Walking in this place we thought we would be in for a treat. It was Friday night around 9:00 pm and the place was packed. Luckily, we were able to land one of the few tables. This is a very small and narrow place, and there is not much seating room. It reminds me of the quaint eateries in Sydney. There was a long line to order. The idea being, you get in line to order gelato so that you can taste as many as you like before ordering. You can also order dessert from the line. I highly recommend ordering from the line and paying up front, vice getting table service. Table service could mean waiting much longer for your food and the check. My friend swears by the chocolate mousse; She says its to die for. I opted for the crepe with mascarpone and house made jam ($8.95). It was ok. I expected the flavor to be a bit more robust. My friends cookies & cream gelato looked yummy. She said it was rich but good. I noticed she didn't finish it. Overall, it was just ok to me. I wouldn't go out if my way to come here like I would for Extraordinary Desserts in Little Italy. I may come back to experience the gelato. read more

Whenever I am in downtown San Diego every few months I try to stop here primarily for the Grand Marnier Chocolate Gelato. They have a lot great flavors, but that one makes the trip worthwhile. The only problem of late is parking nearby due to the closing of 5th and having to park several blocks away. Also the last time I was there in the summer, they only had half of their usual flavors and my favorite was not one of them. Was down in SD staying in the gaslamp a couple weeks ago when we wandered out of our hotel to look for something light for dinner. We stumbled upon Chocolat and after looking at the menu decided to give it a shot. They seated us at one of their little table/couch things and we set off to peruse the many options on the menu. After taking a few mins to decide what we wanted, we waited and waited and waited for someone to come take our order. After waiting for about 15-20 mins, my bf went up to the counter to put in our order. Unfortunately, they were out of both of my first two choice's for gelato which were listed on the menu so I had to opt for my 3rd choice. Of course, the minute he walks back to the table the waitress comes over to take our order. Murphy's law.. or should I say Chocolat's law. Anyhow.. once we got our food -- which the waitress did bring to our table-- it was just okay. The crepe was rather mediocre and didn't taste at all freshly made and the toppings were kinda skimpy. The gelato was much better but the poor service and running out of items on the menu left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. The waitress never came back to the table until we tracked her down for the bill and even then, she never once smiled or said thank you. Quite the sour puss actually... I don't think I'll be back except maybe to grab a gelato to go as I saw a lot of peeps doing. Sit down service here isn't worth the wait and the poor service. :-\ read more

We came pretty close to closing so they only served coffee and gelato. We got a small espresso gelato and the affagato with pistachio instead of regular 'ol vanilla. The espresso gelato ($3.95) had a very strong coffee taste. It was delicious. A small is pretty big, especially in a sugar cone. We had to save some for later. The affagato ($6.95) was delicious. Asking for pistachio gelato in it may sound weird, but it works. The sweetness of the gelato balances out the bitterness of the espresso well. I ended up getting a gelato smoothie = copa frappe which was like a milkshake with my preferred gelato. Gelato prices seem decent, but the desserts seem rather pricey for the amount that you get. This place caught our eye not only because of the ratings but it was also close by to us. The BF and I literally walk down the street from dinner to the nearest dessert place and ended up here. I'm always down for gelato so this was a good place to stop at. Luckily, it wasn't crowded so I stood in front of the gelatos for what seemed like hours trying to decide on which two flavors to get. They guy behind the counter gave me a couple samples which was nice. I ended up choosing a 2 scoop with wild berries and pineapple gelato. The wild berries was pretty good, but the seeds kept getting suck in our teeth. The pineapple gelato was really good. Reminded me of Hawaii's Dole pineapple ice cream which I love! I was told I should try out the gelato here. So my sister, cousin, and I decided to come here on a rainy Friday night. We stood outside for awhile until we decided to just grab a table ourselves. They have a huge selection of different types of gelato's so make sure you get samples before you decide on which one you want! You order at the counter and they will bring you your food. What we got: Sausage and Bell Pepper Crepe: it tasted like a pizza! But I guess nothing surprising there? Cousin loved it, and I thought it was just okay. Nothing special. Pastry Cream & Mixed Berries Crepe: the pastry cream wasn't all that good and mixed with the berries, made it taste odd? Not something I'd get again for sure. Small Nutella Cream, Strawberry, & Cookies and Cream ($4): they actually give you a lot of gelato for a small in my opinion. Sister loved the nutella cream, it was like nutella mixed with marshmallows. The strawberry was pretty refreshing, but didn't have a strong strawberry taste. Stopped at Chocolat for a quick bite. Food- Vegetarian flat bread : Good. Done well with a generous vegetable topping. But the bread or tomato sauce was little salty. Banana and Nutella Crepe : Excellent. The crepe was thin and mildly sweet making it a perfect base for the ooey gooey goodness of Nutella. At nearly 10$, it is a bit expensive though. Lemon Sorbet: Loved it! It was perfectly sweet and sour. Mixed Berry Sorbet : The mixed berry sorbet by itself would have been too sweet for me but it complimented the lemon sorbet really well. Service - The guy serving the gelato was friendly and liberal with the samples. The lady at the counter was also nice and took time to answer DH's questions. Price - A little pricey at 25$+. Was taking a break during Comic Con and was brought here by a friend who knew whats up. I had already eaten lunch and was looking for a sweet dessert to cool me off since it was HOT! Gelato has a special place in my heart, when I was in Rome I ate it everyday no joke breakfast, lunch and dinner. =p It might seem pricey from $4-6 but it's worth it because of the quality and flavor. Also the girls at the counter are nice and are generous when filling up your cup! =) I went with the hazelnut because it's my favorite and a classic flavor and paired that with the espresso, it was a perfect couple. The espresso had a strong coffee flavor that wasn't bitter and went well with the nutty almost chocolate richness of the hazelnut. I got a sample of the vanilla and I would say that it's sublimely subtle in flavor, it doesn't pack as much punch as the others but if I needed a remedy to eating a hot chili this would be it. =D No time to try the crepes but word on the street says they are worth the trip. Thick, rich, creamy gelato as well as other little pastries greet your sugar hungry eyes as you step into this tucked away dessert haven. It was the perfect treat for a warm afternoon! The only thing that kept me from giving this place 5 stars is that it was REALLY warm and stuffy inside, which caused us to sit outside even though it was a little cool for that. I didn't particularly like it. The crepe is cooked nicely with a slight chewiness to it. The highlight of my meal was the caramel latte which I thought tasted amazing. Unfortunately I didn't get to try any of their gelato or desserts which seems to be the draw of Chocolat Cremerie. They also had a full-bar which surprised me a bit. We kind of stumbled here on accident. After a long drive to get to SD, we wanted to go to the Gaslamp quarter for food before checking in to our hotel. We happened to park right across the street from this place. I got the Tagglio & Pear panini and it was delicious! I also got the spiced chai latte and it's probably one of the best ones I have ever had. It was the perfect meal after a 5+ hour drive. I was full from lunch and didn't have room for the gelato which looked really good. The next night, we were looking for some desert since it was my boyfriend's birthday weekend and decided to come back here for some gelato and chocolates. I tried the spiced chocolate and amaretto and couldn't decide between the two. The guy let me put two flavors in the 1 scoop cup which was perfect. My boyfriend picked out a few chocolates to try. They were just ok, none of them really spoke to me. The gelato is definitely where it's at. So creamy and flavorful. This place confuses me. From the name, we expected a dessert place. Gelato, maybe fancy chocolates. Bakery items even. This place had so much more. It is a full cafe. It does serve gelato and bakery items. It also has salads, sandwiches and more. Since we were there mainly for breakfast, we opted to get croissants and coffee. I don't remember much about the coffee, but my goodness, that was a good croissant. It was small, but buttery and flaky. Not quite as good as Delight of France croissants up in Escondido, but the only other croissant I've tried here in San Diego that comes close. After a while of staring at the gelato and hearing it call my name, I had to get some. That gelato was as good as it gets. Delicious. Unfortunately, we do not come downtown very often. It makes me sad because this place has a lot to offer. read more

We have not had Gelato like this since Italy. It was so good and creamy. We went twice. Mr R and I shared Dark Chocolate the first night and Dark Chocolate Orange the next. We loved them both but we nearly died when tasting the orange one - so good! The 8-year old who hangs around us loved the Vanilla Bean. I went to the Chocolat in Milan, Italy and when my friend told me that there's one in San Diego, I've since made it my goal in life to check it out and see how it compares to the one in Italy. But it's definitely a nice spot for a gelato/coffee shop and it gives a slight break between the endless row of bars. Upon walking in I immediately loved the ambiance. You have gelato, chocolates, pastries, and tons of eye candy (the edible kind) to your right. You pass by all this wonderful stuff before you go to order in the way back. All we came in for was coffee, but at this point it's safe to say that I'll be back. The coffee was called some sort of Lion Kona something or other. It was really good and it came out piping hot. And even though the menu at Chocolat Cremerie boasts of everything from gelato to pasta, you bet your last dollar I was going for some gelato that day. Like I said, their menu is quite extensive and ranges from salads to crepes, pancakes, omelets, French toast, and even grilled panini. Great place for breakfast, brunch, or desserts! They have a ton of gelato flavors, and just the chocolate flavor alone has at least 10 variations of milk, dark, orange, cinnamon, ginger, chili, etc. I opted for pistachio which is my go-to gelato flavor to assess the quality. We ordered a salad that had spinach, chicken, bacon, & Gorgonzola cheese. & May I say that salad just FREAKIN' AMAZING!! (it's only like $8...$7.75 to be exact) We shared the salad & flatbread & by the time we were done, we were both SATISFIED..& FULL!! I was in love. So onto dessert. My cousin had been here before, so she was giving me suggestions on which Gelato flavors she liked the best. So when we went up there we were both curious about the Pistachio, which was (in my words..) was "soo pistchio-ey"! My cousin gave me a weird look, but when she tasted her sample, she didn't want to use my word because she knew that's exactly what came to her mind!!! I ended up getting pistachio & nutella n cream. (large size which is 2 flavors. $5). My cousin got vanilla & pistachio. Ok, so the reasons why I didn't give 5 stars. I just couldn't do it. After our meal, I went up to see if I could try some Gelato...well I waited there for what felt like FOREVER! There were even people in front of me (3 of them) trying every freaking flavor of gelato in both freezer displays. So when 3's Company went to pay for their Gelato, the guy helping them just walked away! I mean ok, I know I'm barely 5 feet tall & you probably can't see me over the freezer's hugeness.. but no excuses! I only wanted to try like 2 flavors. So I waited & waited & someone finally came up to me, he gave me my sample & WALKED AWAY! UGH! Not even a "oh yeah this one is good!" or a "how do you like it?"...NOTHING!! So my cousin & I switched places. So that she could stand up there awkwardly for what seemed like another 50 years. 2. Ok so if you get 2 flavors of Gelato..you would think just like ice cream..your flavors would be evenly distributed! Like 50/50! Right?! Well my Gelato flavors were more like 80/20. 80% Pistachio & 20% Nutella&creame. I wish I could tell you I'm exaggerating, but I can swear to you..I'm not. It was the same for my cousins Gelato cup. I was watching the guy who scooped our gelato, he put like 2 scoops of pistachio..made it all pretty & to the side(..ish..there's not really a side when you basically fill the whole cup with ONE FLAVOR!) & then took like a half a scoop of nutella & tried to neatly place it in the tiny hole on the side of my bowl & on top of my plethora of pistachio. I was kinda bummed at my Gelato experience. So that's why I can't give 5 stars. I know I will be going back. But I strongly hope that I get another guy to scoop my Gelato or things will get serious. read more
