Remember the river of chocolate (with the bright pink boats) in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? The hot chocolate from Chocolate Springs is right out of that book: complex, deep flavor with every mouthful full of richness, as if the Oompa Loompas and the rush of the river had truly churned this cocoa to perfection. It is the best hot chocolate I've ever had in my life, and I've had hot chocolate everywhere, from fancy restaurants in SF, to dives, to Switzerland. Nothing is this good. The chocolates are also amazing. Our favorites were lavender (truly a grazing of wildflowers atop a chocolate hill -- but not in a flowery/perfumey kind of way). And, caramel chocolate with sea salt. The salt really brings out the caramel, so it's a mix of sweet and not sweet. But, not really salty, either. The caramel is perfect: golden, buttery, but does not cling to your teeth (something I hate). Other chocolates include: vanilla creme brulee (which really does taste of vanilla and sugar melted to a golden glow), mint, and Paris, which is a blend of chocolate and Earl Grey tea (good, but not great). The small chocolate is truly a work of art: beautiful (as you can see from the photos which are not mine), as are the blocks of chocolate with sculptures of enraptured people. We wandered in here right before closing and grabbed a few already packaged things to go. It's probably good we didn't eat them until the next day when we were out of the area because I would have gone back and bought the place out! For folks who complain that Chocolate Springs is pricey, consider two points: 1) it's the Berkshires, where most food prices are on par with what you'd find in trendy big-city eateries, and, more important, 2) the pastry chefs here use only the finest-quality imported chocolates and a mix of organic, local ingredients and premium imported ingredients. They also make every truffle, biscotto, and chocolate-covered marshmallow by hand, right there in the shop (you can even watch them through the big window), so you're paying for expertly hand-crafted, artisanal chocolates and desserts. And when the chocolate is this good, I'm willing to pay a little extra. The owner and head pastry chef, Joshua Needleman, studied in France and is something of a local celebrity, but is still nice and down-to-earth and enjoys answering questions. And when it comes to chocolate, he is, quite simply, a genius. I haven't had a single item at Chocolate Springs that I wouldn't eat again, but the lavender truffles, green tea truffles, cappuccino mousse cake, chocolate chip cookies, and Mexican hot chocolate (in season, it's a must have -- perfectly spicy and rich, with a hint of cinnamon) are staples for me. The gelato, especially pistachio, should not be missed; it's supersmooth and creamy, not overly sugary, and the best I've had outside of Rome. The coffee is very good, but as a tea drinker, I love looking over the two-page tea menu and choosing something new every time (my new favorite: lychee red tea). The ambience of Chocolate Springs is easygoing, with lots of seating options, including a couple of overstuffed sofas, a communal table, and smaller 4- to 6-person tables. The wait is never more than a few minutes for any drink or drink-and-dessert combo, and service is friendly. They even bring in a pianist once a week or so during the high season, so you can take a load off for a half hour and sip and snack to music. Or you can take your snacks to go and sit outside at the picnic table or gazebo. No matter which option you pick, you'll have a great experience -- and most likely be back for more in no time. read more

This is a great upscale chocolate shop with lots and lots of options. I am a chocolate snob and their selection and quality definetly meets my needs and/or wants. They have quite a few vegan options, which is great for me. When I went to the counter and told "the chocolate man" that I was looking for some vegan chocolate, he took me around the store and pointed out my options as well as what he recommended. I tried a dark chocolate almond cluster. It was super good and extremely hard to not eat in one sitting. The best thing that I went home with was the salted dark chocolate bark. It is basically thin shavings of dark chocolate with rock crystals on top. I have never had chocolate bark as good as this. They have many options for anyone wanting dark chocolate, milk chocolate, white chocolate, etc. I brought home a jasmine chocolate for a friend and chocolate covered gummy bears for my sister. They even have lavendar chocolate. Again, very impressed with the selection (and presentation, lots of the chocolate had beautiful designs on them, etc). It really is hard to find upscale, high quality, resonably priced chocolate shops. I highly recommend chocolate springs cafe, especially if you are a chocolate snob like me! read more

Hella awesome chocolate cafe. You can tell when you walk in that this is unique. The smell is of various chocolate things. The place is Japanese themed but shaped in a manner that allows enjoyment from all angles and at times can even feel kind of like a ski lodge. Everyone who works there is suspiciously attractive. There is no denying that the chocolate here is fantastic and well crafted; however, the prices are just too absurd for me to give this place a higher rating. You have to be ready to drop a good amount of money going in here-- you'll want to buy a bunch of chocolate, maybe enjoy a hot chocolate (incredibly rich as others have written), and enjoy the cozy atmosphere for awhile. They do have amazing hours-- open until nine or ten each night I believe. They also have wifi, but you have to ask for the password. However, the other thing I found odd about this place is that you can't buy just a brick of chocolate. I needed 2.5lbs of chocolate for a recipe and thought this would be a perfect place to go to find it. I asked the woman behind the counter, who had to ask the manager, who told me that they don't sell chocolate in mass quantities like that. It was pretty disappointing. My wife is right! Chocolate Springs Cafe is a "VERY SPECIAL PLACE". For 8 years my family has been enjoying Chocolate Springs Cafe. Yesterday we realized how lucky we are. When one enters the cafe they walk into a warm and cozy atmosphere. The staff all go beyond what is expected from them and add to the enjoyment of Chocolate Springs Cafe. Yesterday I was in heaven and this happens very seldom. I am a huge macaron fan and I have enjoyed the best as you can see from my yelp history. Yesterday i enjoyed the best and most unique macaron to date. I enjoyed two select choices, pistachio and lavender. This review is long over due! I have been a frequent customer here for at least the past 5 years. Their special dark chocolates with infused flavors are amazing. The first year we fell in love with the "Green Tea Chocolate" and this past year I have discovered two new loves. "Creme Brulee and Passion Fruit" The store has a great welcoming atmosphere and the smell of great chocolate. Not only are the chocolates great, but the desserts are also 5-star. The Passion Fruit Mousse Cake is one of my favorites! It's a great place to buy a birthday cake for those gourmets out there. The Chocolate Springs Cafe is awesome! I LOVE this place! I make it a point to stop in and pick up a 20-piece assortment of chocolates every time I come back home to visit family and friends. I haven't found any other place in the Capital Region or in the Berkshires that provides authentic chocolates that taste like they were made by a chocolatier from Belgium or France. I tried both dark and milk varieties. You were soft in the middle but not decadent enough for me to be climax let alone be aroused. It's surprising that I haven't reviewed this gem yet! The Berkshire's really do have a lot of locally owned, operated, and created businesses. A long while back my mom used to work with the guy who opened this place. At that time he was still accumulating varied experience before he finally made his foray into small business ownership. Fortunately, he took the plunge since his passion just happens to result in the best chocolates I've ever tasted anywhere hands down, no joke. Due to that connection, we were fortunate to have been introduced to Chocolate Springs when it opened years back. All of their products are consistently tasty and varied enough to keep you wanting to come back any time you have a chance. My personal favorite is the "real" hot chocolate that comes with a healthy dollop of whipped cream. I like the chocolates and the cakes as well. We were treated to a platter of cheese cakes at a dinner part last week and it really reminded me how unique their products really are. Most are quite rich, but leave your palette with a fresh feeling due to the lack of the processed factory elements found in products of supermarket provenance. Great ambiance and comfy couches to sit down and enjoy the treats as well. The only things that keep me from going there on a regular basis are: -the fact that the prices are definitely Lenox/high-end suited. However, if you match their chocolates up with a box of Russel Stover you probably won't have a problem with paying the premium though! -the location in the former Lenox House Country Shops/Aspinwall/whatever it's called now means its not really convenient unless if you are driving rt. 7/20 for some reason. It also makes it a destination in and of itself, instead of a place you just happen to stroll by while taking a walk. read more

Yeah, it's a little out of place in this otherwise sleepy little shopping center and, yeah, the interior is homespun-meets-the far East (and also chilly on account of the chocolate), but Chocolate Springs makes the best iced mocha you will ever have. Oh, how I savor the chocolates from here. After some not so subtly dropped hints about how much I LOVED the chocolate from here, my mom gave it to my for Christmas and then my boyfriend for Valentines Day. It is truly divine. The caramel is fantastic, as are the boozy truffles. All of the chocolate is absolutely smooth and flavorful. I can eat one piece and be truly satisfied.
