They have an extensive menu so I'm going to give the benefit that some dishes may be better. We ordered the hot and sour soup which was nice and vinegary. Full of tofu and vegetables. We also ordered the mapo tofu and the Chongqin chicken. Tofu was ok. I expected it to be spicier. It's just tofu and sauce with green onions. Tofu was silky. Chicken was good. Pieces were nicely deep fried and juicy. I also didn't find it spicy despite being told it was spicy. They charge $1.95 per bowl of rice. Overall an ok place for me. Not in a hurry to return but if I do, I'd like to explore some of their other dishes. read more

Met up with friends here and had a lovely shared meal. We opted to order 'family style' and shared a variety of dishes. We started with a pot of tea which was very nice. We asked for waters as well and let the waiter, who was always available, know when we needed a refill. Everything we ordered was tasty, fresh, well prepared and nicely presented. I had expected a bit more spice on some of the dishes, but they were all very mild, so if you are worried about Sichuan spiciness or heat, you can put that worry to rest. Chopsticks only are at the table and although we didn't ask for forks, I suspect they could rustle some up for you if needed. The hot & sour soup is good according to my SO who gets it everywhere (and will let me know if it's a thumbs up or down). The décor is lovely and everything is clean, including the gender neutral restroom. The staff we encountered were all very pleasant and service was excellent. Got take out from here. First time so tried a few different things. Got 3 cup chicken, general tso chicken, orange chicken, crab Rangoons, lo mein and pork fried rice. Also got an egg drop soup. Food was ready when we got there, service was good All the food was good, General Tso and the 3 cup chicken were stand outs. Could taste all the flavors in the 3 cup, really good. Loved it here! All of the food was really good and served in a timely fashion. The green tea was served in a kettle and small cups for sharing. Scallion pancakes and sauce were crunchy. The shrimp dumplings were stuffed, which we love. Really like the chop sticks as well, as they were not the wood ones. A little pricey, but we ended up taking food home, so the portions are good. We had another great lunch today... I love their Mei Fun, light and well prepared. Our table also had a chicken and broccoli dish (lots of chicken, lots of flavor), a scallion pancake (nice and crisp but not a lot of scallion flavor) and a wanton soup (a bit too salty for my taste). Been looking for great Szechuan Chinese food ever since I returned to New England after 6 years in NYC. Chong Qing certainly gets the sauces and spices right. They let me order broccoli in garlic sauce, even though it's not technically on the menu. I also tried the Chong Qing Chicken since many patrons rave about it, but found it on the dry side (but still tasty and well-seasoned). So next time, I'll go for something with noodles and sauce. Or maybe, I'll give the dry-hot chicken a whirl because I sampled my friend's dry-hot tofu and it was a sizzling pleaser. The stir-fried green beans were a crowd pleaser too. We'll pass on scallion pancakes on the next go-around--too dry. A small place, tucked away amongst other businesses on Taunton Ave, Chong Qing, while unassuming, provides some of your standard fare, but excels in the more traditional Chinese cuisine. The dry pot chicken was flavorful and not very spicy (I do have a decent tolerance for spicy). The soup dumplings were great as well. The shell was perfect with the right amount of chew and didn't disintegrate on contact like some do. The stir fried cabbage, while simple, complimented the protein nicely and the Sichuan fried rice with pickled chili and bacon, was flavorful and had a nice mild smokiness to it. I look forward to trying more items from the vast menu. read more

People who came after me got their food first. The owner told me, the meal will come by order, but I know who was behind me. I was looking at her for an hour. Don't come to this place because you need to wait for an hour to get your food. And they will bring to food to someone first even they ordered after you. Some of the best Chinese food I've had in Providence. Great restaurant with friendly workers easy to get a table when walking in and you can park on the street. We started out with soup dumplings and it came with six and then we got General tsos chicken, which was lightly breaded and came in a big portion. We also were able to bring our own wine and they provided wine glasses, which was really nice. There was no extra charge for bringing your own wine. We also were able to get the restaurant specialty spicy chicken, which was very crispy and a large portion also. We also got beef lo mein, which was very delicious. This place is a hidden gem. I wish I could even say what we ordered as a Chinese friend did so. The menu is spartan with no pics and just line descriptions. We had General Tso's chicken, fried rice (Young Chow?), noodles, a fried fish (scrumptious), dry sautéed string beans and the cumin pork ribs (off a Google review). Everything was delicious (except for the pork ribs). They were probably done well but just not our taste. The rest was great though the star of the show was the delicately fried fish. Amazing. How did we not come to this place sooner! It's like practically in our back yard. We will be back for sure and eager to try other things on the menu. Finding this restaurant was a complete accident since they are a hole in the wall kind of gem. It's easy to miss the location, but it's located on the East Providence strip with plenty of street parking. It's been so exciting to look at the menu alone, but our expectations were blown away when we were able to finally get there to dine in! We ordered the Cold Cucumbers in Chili Oil, Chongqing Grilled Seabass, Mother's Fried Rice, Steamed Shrimp Dumplings, and Shanghai Spring Rolls. Everything tasted well seasoned and the quality was great. Tasted freshly homemade. Our second visit, we ordered the Dry Sautéed String Bean, Vegetable Spring Roll, Scallion Pancake, Mapo Tofu, Pickled Chili Seabass, and the Sesame Rice Ball. Even better than the last time. Service is fast, friendly (and not overbearing), and accurate. The staff all seem very kind and helpful. I ordered take out before dining in and the ready time was very good- around 20 minutes depending on your order. I highly recommend everyone to try this authentic restaurant, but don't take their heat level lightly- it is not a lie! It's a good, numbing spice! This is truly excellent Sichuan food in East Providence. It's unpretentious, but friendly, and the food is tops. We had perfectly cooked dry-fried green beans (lots of umami); chewy hand-pulled noodles with cumin and shrimp; and a wonderful cauldron of silky fish swimming in a zippy, deeply-flavored Sichuan pepper-infused broth studded with chilis. Ignore all of the other reviews. This place is a gem. The service was very good but the food was GREAT! We were five people. We ordered wonton soup and tofu seafood soup. The wonton soup was good with a very tasty broth (not too salty), tasty wontons and fresh chopped scallions. The tofu seafood soup was our first clue that this meal was going to be wonderful. The soup had imitation crab meat, shrimp and squid rings. The silky smooth luscious soup flavorful and hearty not too much thickener and the silky tofu was a feature not just a filler. We all rated the soups excellent. We ordered the braised fish AND the spicy braised fish. The braised fish was delicious and served on a plate. The spicy braised fish was perfectly seasoned with a moderate spicy bite and served in a large bowl with the braising liquid, chili peppers and onions. Seriously this dish made my eyes roll up into my head and smile with delight. We ordered the ok chop with garlic, the eggplant with shrimp and a large bowl of white rice. Every one of us OH.ed and AHed with every bite. We loved our meal and we will return. This place is undoubtably the best sichuan food restaurant in Rhode Island. The bill as less than $25 per person and we had plenty to eat. The menu is enormous and we'll be back next week to explore. A great place to sit and talk with good food and good friends. If you're looking for a delightful new Chinese place with that quintessential red and gold paper lantern and foo dog décor, attentive service, and food that won't upset your stomach (or your pooper), then forget about this place! But if you know and love authentic Sichuan food, especially if you've eaten almost anywhere in Asia, then you'll feel the authenticity right away. This chef must have been cooking professionally in China and from the amount of English spoken here, I'd say till rather recently. So go in with realistic expectations about décor, communication, and service (saying it's all very basic is being kind) and just let your taste buds take charge. We've been there 4 times now and have never been disappointed (with the food). For your first time I'd suggest starting with the Dan Dan noodles (you need to stir all the goodies up from the bottom first), and then don't skip the Sichuan fried rice. The smoked pork (aka: bacon) & leeks is a can't miss entrée. I'll upgrade my rating to 5 stars if they can just make some basic improvements like an occasional check-in by the waitress, cups w/ice for the sodas, free ice water, at least one staff member who can communicate basically in English, and perhaps some pictures/descriptions of the food so it's all not such a total guessing game. read more

Probably my new go-to sit down Sichuan restaurant in Providence. Sandwiched at the corner of Hope Street and Wickenden Street, you will find a restaurant that resembles the simplicity you'd find in China. Their main specialities are in their authentic portion of the menu, so unless you're looking to for a lunch special, I'd recommend skipping the Americanized dishes. Usually Sichuan food is pure numbing spice, but we were delighted to find a variety of options. The dishes we ordered ranged from Shredded Pork w. Preserved Veg. Noodle Soup to Pork Chop with Chestnut. For a non-spicy option, the Shredded Pork w. Preserved Veg. Noodle Soup (榨菜肉丝汤面) and Pork Chop w. Chestnuts (板栗排骨) are incredibly savory. The noodle soup comes with picked vegetables that gives it a delightful tart taste, while the pork chop has a decadent sauce that blends really well with the roasted chestnuts. For a spicy option, Braised Sliced Fish w. Chili Sauce (水煮鱼片), Beer Chicken w. Pickled Pepper (托杯鸡), and Big Dish Chicken w. Xingiang Flavor (新疆大盘鸡) are always good choices. More on the traditional side, they pack a punch with really distinct flavors (I think they use traditional Chinese beer in the beer chicken). I didn't know this, but apparently they also have a hot pot option (around $24 for all you order), which is a steal if you're hungry. "Authentic enough" Chinese food. Why do I qualify "Authentic" by adding "enough"? Because you, with your (likely) feeble (likely) Americanized palate would have your freaking FACE melted off and be in actual authentic agony if you had actual "authentic spicy" Sichuan food in actual China. The food is absolutely fabulous spicy and they are very helpful to let you know the level of space and if you can handle it. If it is too spicy for you they will adjust the recipe. After several days of eating Italian during Columbus Day weekend we wanted a change of pace and stopped here. This was a good choice. The restaurant has three different dining areas. We chose to sit in the area near the front. Our server was quick to take care of us. We ordered the pork fried rice, pork dumplings and some noodles with broth. The pork dumplings were very spicy but not overbearing. The sauce was delicious, I could have used the sauce on everything because it packed so much flavor. Ok gang, this is--up to this moment--the best Chinese food I've had in the greater Providence area. When we moved from NYC I wasn't sure what to expect with regard to availability of Asian cuisine. I was sure there would be American style stuff, but not regional Chinese food. Chong Qing house does real-deal Sichuan/Chongqing food if you know where to look on the menu. The staff is also really helpful and patient, and assisted me in finding their versions of the kinds of things I enjoyed so much back in NYC. Their ChongQing Chicken is dry fried chicken with chilis (also called Laziji), and it's very good. We also tried the cold cucumber with chili and it was very tasty. The Mapo tofu was the standout, though; I'm not sure if they made it extra spicy for us since I seemed like a big 'ol Chinese food nerd, but it was full of that amazing, numbing Sichuan peppercorn. The food was delicious. My family ordered four different menu Items and all tasted great. The salt and pepper shrimp is a must-have... the shrimp was super Fresh and a great, plump size. Our server was very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed at all times. The only surprise was the higher cost of the food. My bill for two adults and one child with four menu items and a 15% tip was $76... which is not really what I expect to spend for Chinese cuisine.
