Why 5 stars? Because it's elevated and unique cuisine. --- --- --- There is no shortage of restaurants you can enjoy in Houston, but a massive percentage of them are Tex-Mex and BBQ. Then there's the stuff you get plenty of in any city: pizza, chinese, sandwiches, chicken places, etc. But a real rare gem is ChopnBlok. It's West African cuisine, which is not exactly something you see on every street corner. But more importantly, this food is clearly made with love. It's not cheap: a couple of bowls and a tea comes out to nearly $100 after tip, but you're paying for real quality here. My dad and I both ordered a Golden Bowl and added steak. The steak was the best part. It had this amazing smokey flavor that made me wish I just ordered double steak instead of steak as an add on. I initially visited the ChopnBlok in POST, and was blown away with the flavors, so I've always wanted to come back and try their stand alone spot. If you're a person greatly adverse to spice, just be aware that there are some subtle hints of a kick in this dish, but I found it to be just the right amount: it let you know that it was there, but stayed in its lane. read more

Even though we went to the smaller location at The Post, we were still expecting the same level of quality and experience associated with this establishment. I have to say that my dish was tasty, but there were several things that disappointed me. First, the prices were outrageous for what was offered. Second, the use of flimsy plastic utensils and cheap napkins felt out of place. You would think that a place with such a prestigious reputation would provide higher-quality disposable items, at the very least. Overall, while the food was good, the experience did not justify the cost. This will probably be a one-and-done visit for me. read more

Yall... this food literally gave me hope again in eating out. Such a breath of fresh air from the complementary valet parking to the chill relaxing vibe of the restaurant made me feel at home. Now the food was 100/10! Some of the best food I've had in years with everything in that golden bowl seasoned down. Plantains were soft and tender sweet and THE BEST chicken fillet in the bowl. Wasn't too crazy about the Suya and cheese meat pies. They could have had more flavor but loved the texture. Best part was all the food came in under 15 minutes! Quick and fast and friendly service. We were seated and ate our whole meat within 45 minutes without feeling rushed. I will definitely be coming back! read more

Really delicious curries! My husband got the classic golden bowl while I had the auntie mawa's maafe (the peanut base intrigued me). We also ordered the beef skewers (polo club suya) on the side. Even though the golden bowl is the classic, I actually thought the auntie mawa's had more umami. While the food was very solid, I wasn't blown away, so I'm rating this a high 4. I also thought my rice was a little too smoky (like when a blowtorch gets too close to the food and you taste the butane smell). Not that the rice was blowtorched but it had that same kind of flavor. The kale was also a bit hard to cut as it was one large leaf on top of the rice. But its fried thin texture was nice. Lastly, we ordered the plantain bread. I think it's worth getting and the cream they put underneath is a nice touch. They also crisped up the edges nicely before serving. Service was great! For a group of three, we tried: *Deviled Scotch Egg: A fun take on a classic scotch egg. I liked the deviled egg filling. *Polo Club Suya: Flavorful grilled beef skewers with great seasoning. *Golden: Chicken was tender and the plantains were excellent. *Black Star: My favorite dish! What a delight and great addition to the Houston food scene! Loved everything about this place. The workers (and I think manager?) came by several times to not only introduce themselves but also make sure we didn't need anything or have any questions. They were SO nice to thoroughly explain the menu and let us try the different curries since it was our first time. I read the Irie Punch was very strong/heavy so I decided to get Gin & Juice and I'm so glad I did - it tasted exactly how it was described on the menu. All the food and curries are packed with flavor and I love how you can customize the bowls to how you want it. My favorite was the black star yassa curry and the golden (which is also a fan favorite). The suya beef skewers is also a hit. Everything also came out VERY quickly and the food was all packed with flavor, fresh, and had good portions. Make sure you make reservations because it's a small restaurant but I heard they are expanding. The parking is also little bit too hard to find (but there is valet) but I have gone through worse. ChopnBlok has a fan in me! We were driving around trying to figure out a place for dinner and the ChopnBlok sign drew us in. As soon as we entered the vibes and scent of dishes made me know we'd made a great decision. Our server had a great balance between professional and the feeling of an old friend. She offered a few recommendations since it was our first time dining with them and we both went with her favorites - the coconut chicken bites and the Golden. I appreciated that most of their dishes have the option to swap or add additional protein. The chicken bites were good. I'm normally not a sauce person but a squeeze of the lemon it was plated with and the dipping sauce definitely enhanced the flavor. The Golden though, amazing! I swapped the chicken for shrimp and he added shrimp to his dish. The "jollof jambalaya" was full of flavor and thankfully came with smoked turkey sausage which I greatly appreciated as a non pork/beef eater. The curry was packed with flavor and the sweetness of the stewed plantains really complemented the heat of the dish. Our drinks were great too. I had the "Her" Chenin Blanc and he had the "Irie Punch" and we'd gladly order both again. I look forward to visiting again to try out more of the menu! read more

Bursting with flavor in every bite! Came to the Michelin recognized ChopnBlok with my family and we all loved it. We came during happy hour and were able to try a bunch of different plates. I assume that the happy hour portion sizing is little smaller than the non-happy hour dishes, but I could be wrong. We ordered the Polo Club Suya, Meat Pie Minnies, Coconut Chicken Bites, Golden, Buka, and Black Star. I believe happy hour is M-F, 3-6:30PM Not to be a chicken nugget girl, but I will say that the Coconut Chicken Bites were one of my favorite dishes that night. The chicken was sooo tender and perfectly fried. I don't think I really tasted much coconut though, but still yummy regardless! I also really enjoyed the Meat Pie Minnies and the Polo Club Suya! The pastry pie is so delicious and the Polo Club Suya was packed with flavor. Wished the meat was just a tad more tender, but awesome for the taste buds. Service was great as well - even though it was busy, the staff was still attentive and I felt like our food came out in a timely manner. Interior vibes gave ethnic wine bar feel. I don't know where to begin, this is a wonderful restaurant! No wonder why they were recognized by Michelin with the Bib Gourmand award! I simply wanted to try West African cuisine for the first time, and while I visited Houston thinking some good Tex-Mex would be the highlight of my trip, ChopnBlok indeed became the highlight. Warm, welcoming and professional service from our server. The beautifully decorated dining room. I absolutely loved the space. We tried with an appetizer, chicken bites. They reminded me of Japanese karaage, and the aioli sauce that came with it made them even better. I ordered "Golden" with added shrimp. With no exaggeration, this was mind-blowing-delicious! The creamy, coco nutty yellow curry. Jambalaya as the bed. Bing shrimp and blackened chicken. Beans. Brussels sprouts. I could tell this was prepared with care and love, as presentation was perfect as well. Also, serving was so big I even wondered if it was meant to be shared between two people. Seeing this pop up in the Post Oak area last year, a coworker mentioned this spot as the place to check out. The girlfriend and I decided on an early dinner here on Sunday, the day after valentine's day. We left as ChopnBlok fanatics that are looking forward to our next return. Walking in, you're greeted by a smiling staff with aromas of spices and cocktails as you get walked to your table. Once seated, we got down with some handcrafted drinks which included the following: Dodo Old Fashioned - 9/10 Tamarind Manyarita - 10/10 Redbush Sidecar - 8/10 The Chopman - 10/10 The Manyarita and Chopman are the signature stars of the cocktails and rightfully so. Each has the perfect blend of sweetness, sourness, tart, and alcohol. The Old Fashioned and Sidecar are tasty as well, both were enjoyed by me although I'll admit I wish I ordered the other two previously mentioned. The gin n juice is a popular one and we'll definitely get that next time. A frozen cocktail, the server was kind enough to let us sample it and it gave us reminders of that classic Snoop Dogg track: mind on your money, money on your mind! For starters, we ordered the deviled scotch egg (8/10) and the suya & cheese pie minnies (10/10). The deviled scotch egg is an egg with the deviled spiced filling served in a ground spiced fried turkey shell; definitely your thing if you like spice. The suya & cheese pie minnies were savory and succulent with perfectly melted cheese and suya meat having the blend of spice and richness in the golden pie exterior; absolutely deliciousness. Now for entrees, my girlfriend ordered the Golden blok (10/10) w/ chicken while I decided on the greens & tings (10/10) w/ chicken and shrimp. Both dishes are superb with different taste profiles. The golden contains a jambalaya-type rice w/ curry and stewed plaintains so spiciness and richness from the rice and curry came into play and the plaintains gave a nice sweetness. The greens & tings contained tender rice mixed with greens (i.e. spinach, cilantro, herbs, etc.) and some yaji veggies with chicken mixed in and topped with 4 large seasoned shrimp. This was one of the best rice dishes I've ever had in my life; the rice was cooked perfectly with excellent flavors from the greens and spices and the meats (chicken and shrimp) both extremely tender. The portions are quite large so we had plenty to take home for lunch the next day. I recommend you make a reservation on OpenTable because if we hadn't done that, no way would we be getting a spot there. Also parking is limited so be prepared to walk a ways if you have to park a few blocks down. Take those into consideration as you plan your next meal here. You should definitely try this spot as you'll be introduced to West African cuisine the proper way and more than likely to return which is what we intend to do! read more

If you have only been to ChopnBlok for dinner, do not sleep on their happy hour. I have been here a few times for dinner, but this was my first time stopping in for happy hour, and it was a really good experience. I will say it can be a little confusing when you first walk in trying to figure out where to check in, since it is not right by the main door. Happy hour runs from 4-8, which is a great window, and you have the option to sit at the full bar or make a table reservation. It can get busy + bustling inside so I would definitely recommend making a reservation. That said, the happy hour is definitely worth it. The prices are great, and I really liked that there is a variety of both drinks and food from the regular menu available at a lower price. It still feels like you are getting really good value for what you pay. They also offer complimentary valet parking, which is a nice perk. Just make sure to bring cash to tip. Our server Tiffany was super nice (it was pretty busy but she was very attentive) and gave us lots of recommendations, which made the experience even better. read more

My friends in Houston brought us to dinner here because they've heard only raving reviews of ChopnBlok since they moved here. This spot has even won numerous awards, including being on the 2025 MICHELIN Guide Bib Gourmand list. Firstly, the vibes are really fun here. There's a DJ in the front playing a great mix of afrobeats and rnb. We didn't make it in time to Happy Hour, so we ordered from the regular menu. The bowls can be sufficient for one serving, however it's a TON of food. Our party of 4 shared 2 bowls and 2 small plates and at least two of us were STUFFED by the end (the guys in our group probably could have eaten a bit more). The bowls are also incredibly rich in flavor, so this isn't your typical fast casual bowls we're talking about. The Golden jollof rice and the yassa curry in the Black Star bowl were seriously so so good. I'd order again in a heartbeat. The food came out surprisingly quick too. While it would have been nice to have the small sides come out early as apps, all of it came out at the same time shortly after we ordered. We were in and out within an hour because of how fast the food came + how good the food was we finished it so fast! One thing that could've been better: The music, while great, is a bit loud, which means everyone is speaking quite loud indoors, so the volume level is quite high. The food is good, but the mains might be a little too spicy for the kids. My family and I went here. Based on recommendation from past reviews, we made a reservation ahead of time for a Sunday night at 6. Parking is a pain. There is valet, for that tiny parking lot that probably can fit no more than 20 cars. Get there early to find street parking. First impression, it was a cozy place with a lot happening. There wasn't a hostess at the front entrance, so we were a little confused. You had to go up to the register to get seated. Because of our reservation, we got a table right away. They place is cozy (small), so the noise was concentrated. There was seating outside, which would be a little bit quieter if you preferred. For appetizers, we got the "Chip & Dip", "Coconut Chicken Bites", and "Scotch Egg". "Chip & Dip" came with friend plantains with a spinach dip. The spinach dip was yummy. It was not your typical cheesy spinach dip, but a much more healthier version with what I can described it as chopped sauté spinach with some spices. The "Coconut Chicken Bites" were a hit with the kids. It was a small portion though that came with I believe was a yogurt cucumber dip. I think my kids would have been happier eating that as their main. It would be nice if they made that into a kids meal. The "Scotch Egg" (one egg that was halved) was good. I had a lot of Scotch Eggs when I was in London, so I really appreciated this was made with turkey sausage so my kids can try it. They loved it. The meals were good too. They had a few vegetarian choices. My wife got the "Aunty Mawa's Maafe", which she thought was a little under season, but still good. My oldest got the "Golden", which she loved. She had this same dish at the Post location. I had a little bit of the curry, and it reminded me of the curry they used in the Jamaican Curry Chicken Roti. My two youngest shared the "Trad", which they found a little too spicy. One had to drink a lot of water, the other just picked at it. I got the "Buka", which tasted wonderful. Most of the dishes came with some plantains which complimented very well with the spices of each of the dishes. Overall, a very nice place, and we will definitely try it again. read more

I have wanted to try them out since they opened and finally I made the reservation and invited a few friends. I would highly suggest making reservations as I heard a group say the wait was 2hrs without on a Saturday night. The hostess area is different because it is at the back of the restaurant along with the restroom and a small hallway for waiting. Due to road closures my party was running a bit late and I could only be seated once have the party arrived which was fine. We sat on the patio which was nice but a bit windy and chilly. They have propane heat lamps, but they were out of propane at this time. Our waitress was wonderful and apologetic that they didn't have the heat lamps. Food and drinks from start to finish was amazing. I ordered the strawberry chili margarita and first sip caught me off guard because it really had a kick. Everyone at the table said their drinks were amazing. I wanted to try the chips and dip and glad I did because I wanted my greens like this all the time. The jollof, rice, plantains and chicken in my dish were everything. All I can say is that we all enjoyed our food the vibe the atmosphere everything about this place was amazing. This was a very enjoyable lunch/early dinner, aside from the rude valet guy on the front. Everyone else was pretty pleasant. This place was crowded, with about a five hour wait since we didn't have a reservation, but we managed to get seats at the bar. The bartender, Bartholomew, was super friendly and helpful and explained everything on the menu. We even received a tasting plate so we could try the different bases and sauces in sample portions, which helped us know exactly what we wanted in our dishes. I liked how you can interchange the sauces and rice with yourmeals to give everything a different spin. It feels like an upscale African Chipotle. But not an average place. The food was so good I couldn't finish my bowl. I only ate a little bit of it. We also tried the meat pies, the suya, and the shrimp. The suya was really good. The shrimp were just ok and didn't have much flavor, possibly overcooked. The meat pies were also just ok. Overall, between the service, food quality, and ambiance, I'm giving this place five stars. The food and service here is a 10/10. I initially was going to try the motherland, but decided to go with the golden. It was so delicious, the bowl was full of flavor and it was super filling. The curry added a great layer to the dish, the plantains were sweet, and I love the crunch of the veggies. The jambalaya was definitely on the drier side, and the chicken was a little dry as well. Huge portions with amazing flavors! We had the most wholesome waiter who explained everything to us and gave us samples to help us understand the flavor profiles of each curry and rices. We got the Golden and the meat pies (suya and cheese). The pasty on the meat pies were nice and light, the filling was flavorful. Huge fan of West African restaurant ChopnBlok--and glad they have a brick and mortar location that offers an elevated experience that differs from their Post location. First, reservations are HIGHLY recommended, even for lunch. They have bar seating, dining area table service (no counter service), and there's a small patio. Chips and dip are a must to start your meal. Expect Liberian greens (give me an entire plate of that, please) served with plantain chips. Currently craving as I type this... It was hard to choose between all of the entrees, love a hearty stew! Opted for the Golden. Solid choice, but next time I'll ask to sub the smoky jollof jambalaya with the Liberian rice or steamed rice (I don't eat red meat or pork and noticed the jambalaya had meat). I went last night. Got off from work a little late than expected. But I still wanted to order something so I went and asked if I could sit at the bar. I was probably there 20 minutes prior to them closing however I wanted to order a drink while i wait and something to go. They saw me sitting at the bar and did not say anything. I literally had to ask for a menu. I was told the bar was closing in two minutes. I told them that I've been sitting here for the longest. The guy apologize once he heard that I was ordering to go, but good customer service should be given til closing. HH- mark it down, reserve in advance. Good selection of bites and drinks and you can easily fill up. I think we got everything except one dish. Be warned- the dining room gets LOUD!! We were sat at a small table close to the entrance but felt like we were screaming at each other to be heard. Love that there is consistent crowds here. Decor is fun and transportative. Patio seating also looks welcoming and does eventually fill up as well. There is valet for your convenience, otherwise I think you can park anywhere along the strip mall and limited side street parking as well. Everything has good flavour. Another great meal with friends. This time around they advised of a 90-minute table limit, so keep that in mind. Service was as prompt and friendly as last time, and our server was very attentive. My friends raved about the chips and dip. We enjoyed 3 kinds of mini pies: vegetarian, beef and cheese, and beef. One friend raved about the vegetarian, and my absolute fav is the beef. For entrees, we had the shrimp, the short rib, and the smoked chicken platters. Every bite was absolutely delicious. I was stuffed, but my friends had the house plantain bread and loved it. I attended the Houston James Beard Finalists Dinner on Tuesday and if you have not been to a collaborative dining experience hosted by, Chef Ope Amosu, you have not witnessed the upper echelon of culinary brilliance that Houston has to offer. There is a reason ChōpnBlok continues to dominate the culinary scene and simply stated it is dedication to inclusive excellence. Every dinner I have attended that Chef Ope has hosted and/ or participated in has left me with a sense that everything possible was done to maintain each chef's unique artistry, story and genuine love to provide a multi-sensory experience that unequivocably evokes both awe and nostalgia in patrons. The food always feels undeniably like home, but often in the most expansive, mind-bending way. Thank you to everyone who played a part in this incredible event. Everything was beautifully envisioned and executed. The attention to detail and desire to imbue meaning in every aspect of this experience was like no culinary event I've attended before. Last but not least, thank you to the bar tenders and service team as a solo diner I truly experienced community and had a great time. Here's what was served! Course 0 - Welcome Bites/ Appetizers - Sankofa Spritz - The signature cocktail of the night. I love a sweet cocktail. So, this was right up my alley. This drink was essentially a Cucumber French 75 with subtle hints of cilantro and lavender that really paired well with the Suya Tartare. - Suya Tartare - We'll call this one of the most elevated tostadas you'll ever eat. This was one of my favorite bites of the evening. Brimming with so many levels of flavor and texture that all just melded. Lightly seared ChopnBlok Suya spiced tartare that had the brightness and buttery texture you expect from the best, finely diced and piled high atop a creamy avocado mash blended with ChopnBlok African Goddess dressing on Maximo's crisp, signature tostada shell made from house ground masa. The dish was garnished with citrus splashed cherry tomatoes and Salvadorian cheese from Chef Evelyn Garcia's ranch. -     Palm Butter Mushroom w/ Banga Sauce & Corn Congee - I love mushrooms and must say that this particular mushroom had such a beautiful, meaty texture-very reminiscent of a perfectly cooked filet mignon... the kind that almost melts in your mouth. I couldn't decide which sauce I preferred, the smokey, sultry Banga Sauce or the sweet, yet slightly savory corn congee, both were good and played well together. Course 1- Smokey Grilled Octopus, Plantain Mash, Recado Negro, Herb Salad & Pickled Celtuce -     This dish is akin to your favorite off the wall aunt. I know it may seem like a ridiculous comparison but hear me out as I know every family has at least one - that fun aunt that you wonder how in the world she's related to your square parent, but also recognize as a part of you when you accomplish something really ambitious. This dish had so many things I don't think I ever would've thought to put together, but they all combined for an incredibly delectable bite. The octopus was expertly seasoned and smoked with a beautiful char. I really enjoyed it's texture, just the right amount of cook to avoid it becoming stiff/ rubbery and I love the pairing with the mole to give that acidity that I'm used to experiencing with octopus. The mole was *chef's kiss* and I enjoyed it as both the dipping sauce for the octopus and "gravy" for the plantain mash. This dish was truly another triumph in texture and flavor. Course 2 - Citrus Smoked Chicken -w/Native Fried Rice, Scallion Masa Pancake & Seasonal Pickles -     This was my favorite dish of the night. I was too full to enjoy this meal in its entirety at the event. So, I took my leftovers home and devoured them. Every item on this plate was exceptional and truly showcased the collaborative spirit and unique strength of each chef - from the masterful smoke of Chef Adrian's chicken, to the deliciously inventive variation on a theme of Chef Wong's scallion pancake/ crepe/ tortilla, and the texture and flavor paradise that is Chef Ope's rice - this meal set a new bar and already has me wishing that I could enjoy it again. I don't think I ever imagined that I would crave pickled green beans, but Chef Evelyn did her big one with the green beans and that citrusy green sauce... Yes ma'am! Course 3 - Dessert -     For the Closing Toast - June's Brut Rose - nice night cap and compliment to the dessert balanced, not sweet or dry -     Calabash Tres Leche w/ Roasted Pineapple Ice Cream & 5 Spice Cashew - If you love a sweet and salty matchup and delight in bold flavor this dessert is for you. I thoroughly enjoyed the smokey, spicy, salty kick of the cashews. The tres leches was perfectly moist but not "wet" like some tres leches cakes can be and paired well with the subtle hints of pineapple and vanilla in the ice cream. I brought a friend here for dinner because I had enjoyed this restaurant in the past and wanted to share the experience. Unfortunately, this visit was disappointing 6/22/26. The food was just okay. I ordered a dish I had enjoyed before, but it contained very few vegetables and very few plantains compared to previous visits. The bigger issue was the treatment we received. Our food arrived about 10 minutes after ordering, and only about 5 minutes after we received our meals, a hostess came to our table and told us we would need to move to another table. While she was telling us this, another server came over and said not to worry because she had gotten the other table to leave instead. As customers trying to enjoy dinner, we should never be put in the middle of a restaurant's seating problems. To make matters worse, the manager later came to our table and, in a rude manner, informed us that he would need the table after only 1 hour and 5 minutes. The restaurant advertises a 90-minute dining limit, yet we were being pressured long before that limit had expired. I dine at restaurants all over Houston, including several that have time limits for seating. In all my years of dining out, I have never felt so rushed, unwelcome, and undervalued. There is a professional way to manage reservations and table turnover. This was not it. I came expecting the hospitality I remembered from my previous visit. Instead, I left feeling like getting customers out the door was more important than making them feel welcome. read more

Every single time I visit Houston, this restaurant is always my first stop! This was my first time visiting the Montrose location! I highly recommend you make a reservation as it was packed even after 2pm. Golden is a must order. It's literally so perfect from the Smokey Jollof Jamalaya soaks up the delicious motherland curry up so well. I actively crave this curry all the time. It's so unique and pairs so nicely with all the components of the dish. I also recommend getting steak as the protein as they are juicy and marinated really well. I also tried the black star, which while amazing did not compare to the golden. the perfect amount of crunch. We also got the Ikoyi shrimp which was cooked perfectly and had a nice heat to it.
