He gave us the sampler which included the different rice and curry. Love this place! We've been here for a few times with friends for lunch and it always hits. The chips n dip come with a delicious Liberian Greens dip, slightly bitter in taste and incredible overall, with crispy plantain chips. We get this each time since it's so good! For the main dishes, we usually share the African Goddess salad with steak, Golden (my fav), Buka and the Aunty Mawa's. All the dishes come with some sort of rice and protein and you can sub or add as you please. Y'all the flavors on these dishes - it'll leave you wanting bite after bite after bite. I revisited and had a great experience during their happy hour where their bowls are 1/3 of their original price!! I got the black star and buka bowls, polo club suya, and special cookies and cream ($16). Both bowls (almost 1/2 size of the normal bowl) were delicious. The plantains in the buka were so good. The suya portion was a bit small but understandable - the meat was a little tough but flavor was perfect especially with the peanut spice. The cookie and cream - I preferred the coffee ice cream (obviously) and the spice and nuts gave it a nice kick. I don't think this was worth $16 but it was worth trying once. Parking is valet or you can do street parking (plentiful and probably 1-3 minute walk) Service - excellent! They do bring the tablet to you so you have to tip in front of your server. So my partner and I came here for a happy hour cause it was close, had lots of food options, and we've been wanting to try it since forever (the samples at the location at Post really set the stage). We came on a Friday after work and it was packed! Parking lot full (they do valet as well) but we found street parking. Walking in, it was lively and fun and we were luckily sat at the bar. Our bartender, Robert, was awesome and really took care of us. He gave us a rundown on drinks, food, etc. We essentially ordered one of every item on the HH food menu except the plantain and dip (which we'll have to do next time). Their happy hour food menu is essentially a tasting menu, smaller bowls of their main dishes with some apps and test items. There wasn't an item I didn't like but the golden and the fried chicken bites were 2 standouts for me. The golden has perfectly seasoned and grilled chicken with a curry sauce, rice, and plantains. The mixture of textures and flavors is just great on the palate and each bite can be a little different keeping it interesting. Drink-wise, I tried the musa mule, redbush sidecar, and OGA palmer (NA). I really enjoyed the redbush sidecar, it was bright but still had the earthiness of a darker liquor. The musa mule was alright, I thought it was refreshing but not my favorite drink. The OGA palmer was also super refreshing and great if you don't want any alcohol. Wow this place definitely has some of the most flavorful dishes I've had in my entire life (in the best way!) The inside of this restaurant is absolutely beautiful. You can see the culture in it. There's plenty of seating. It looks like it can accommodate for relatively large groups, or if you just wanted to have a date night, or catch up with a friend. If you plan on coming during a busy time, I recommend making a reservation beforehand. I went here with my brother for lunch on a weekday, and it was both of our first times here. I liked that if it's your first time, they give you some samples, so you can get a better idea of what to get off of the menu. Our server was very helpful with explaining each dish to us in detail and also giving us some good recommendations. We ordered: -golden -buka -African goddess salad To be honest, this was more than enough food for 2 people. We had to bring some food home to-go because we were stuffed. Our favorite item was the golden. We loved the flavor in each bite. The salad was also absolutely delicious too. The portion for the salad is HUGE, so be prepared to not finish it or share it with a lot of people. I came on a Friday night without making reservations... which probably wasn't the best decision.... but to my surprise, we ended up getting seated 10-15 min after being placed on the waitlist! Anyway, my friend & I were placed at the end of the table with a group on the other end, to demonstrate how packed it was (a communal table?). Our server was extremely kind and attentive as well. :) Given this is Montrose, the parking situation is abysmal, but fortunately, my friend and I were able to snag a spot on a nearby street/neighborhood. This was my first time trying African food (specifically Nigerian), and phew, was it good... I highly recommend the Golden Bowl, a curry dish consisting of chicken that was grilled to perfection & had a nice smoky flavor. I also absolutely LOVED the addition of plantains, which is such an interesting combo! Their preparation of vegetables, such as Brussels sprouts, was top-notch as well. I went with the Golden which came with chicken but I added shrimp as well. It was one of the most flavorful dishes that I've had. The curry was yummy and the jollof was spicy. My friend had the buka and really liked it. Everything was so well flavored and portions were huge. They also have a really great happy hour where you can get smaller versions of the entrees for an amazing price. I'll recommend this to anyone in Houston. Why 5 stars? Because it's elevated and unique cuisine. --- --- --- There is no shortage of restaurants you can enjoy in Houston, but a massive percentage of them are Tex-Mex and BBQ. It's West African cuisine, which is not exactly something you see on every street corner. But more importantly, this food is clearly made with love. The steak was the best part. It had this amazing smokey flavor that made me wish I just ordered double steak instead of steak as an add on. I initially visited the ChopnBlok in POST, and was blown away with the flavors, so I've always wanted to come back and try their stand alone spot. If you're a person greatly adverse to spice, just be aware that there are some subtle hints of a kick in this dish, but I found it to be just the right amount: it let you know that it was there, but stayed in its lane. read more

Even though we went to the smaller location at The Post, we were still expecting the same level of quality and experience associated with this establishment. I have to say that my dish was tasty, but there were several things that disappointed me. First, the prices were outrageous for what was offered. Second, the use of flimsy plastic utensils and cheap napkins felt out of place. You would think that a place with such a prestigious reputation would provide higher-quality disposable items, at the very least. Really delicious curries! My husband got the classic golden bowl while I had the auntie mawa's maafe (the peanut base intrigued me). We also ordered the beef skewers (polo club suya) on the side. Even though the golden bowl is the classic, I actually thought the auntie mawa's had more umami. While the food was very solid, I wasn't blown away, so I'm rating this a high 4. I also thought my rice was a little too smoky (like when a blowtorch gets too close to the food and you taste the butane smell). Not that the rice was blowtorched but it had that same kind of flavor. The kale was also a bit hard to cut as it was one large leaf on top of the rice. But its fried thin texture was nice. Lastly, we ordered the plantain bread. I think it's worth getting and the cream they put underneath is a nice touch. They also crisped up the edges nicely before serving. Service was great! What a delight and great addition to the Houston food scene! Loved everything about this place. The workers (and I think manager?) came by several times to not only introduce themselves but also make sure we didn't need anything or have any questions. They were SO nice to thoroughly explain the menu and let us try the different curries since it was our first time. I read the Irie Punch was very strong/heavy so I decided to get Gin & Juice and I'm so glad I did - it tasted exactly how it was described on the menu. All the food and curries are packed with flavor and I love how you can customize the bowls to how you want it. My favorite was the black star yassa curry and the golden (which is also a fan favorite). The suya beef skewers is also a hit. Everything also came out VERY quickly and the food was all packed with flavor, fresh, and had good portions. Make sure you make reservations because it's a small restaurant but I heard they are expanding. The parking is also little bit too hard to find (but there is valet) but I have gone through worse. ChopnBlok has done no wrong on any of my visits and at this point...I'm convinced they just know what they're doing. From the welcome as soon as you walk in to the attentive staff and delicious menu options, I've consistently had a great experience here. Now if there's a patio, you already know where you're going to find me! I almost always choose to sit outside, and one thing I REALLY appreciate is that the service doesn't change because you're on the patio. I'm still checked on and given the same attention as if I were sitting inside. Patio people matter too! Lol The **Ikoyi Shrimp and Coconut Chicken Bites** are favorites for us. They're seasoned and cooked so well, and honestly, you could probably point at something in the Small Chops section and walk away happy. There isn't a dedicated kids menu, so I usually let my little one make a meal out of the smaller bites and she's a happy camper. For my main, I've ventured around the menu and tried different dishes, but somehow I always find my way back home to the **Golden Bowl**. Smoky jollof, curry, chicken, veggies and plantains all working togetherand every time I order it, it tastes just as good as I remembered. She offered a few recommendations since it was our first time dining with them and we both went with her favorites - the coconut chicken bites and the Golden. I appreciated that most of their dishes have the option to swap or add additional protein. The chicken bites were good. I'm normally not a sauce person but a squeeze of the lemon it was plated with and the dipping sauce definitely enhanced the flavor. The Golden though, amazing! I swapped the chicken for shrimp and he added shrimp to his dish. The "jollof jambalaya" was full of flavor and thankfully came with smoked turkey sausage which I greatly appreciated as a non pork/beef eater. The curry was packed with flavor and the sweetness of the stewed plantains really complemented the heat of the dish. Our drinks were great too. I believe happy hour is M-F, 3-6:30PM Not to be a chicken nugget girl, but I will say that the Coconut Chicken Bites were one of my favorite dishes that night. The chicken was sooo tender and perfectly fried. I don't think I really tasted much coconut though, but still yummy regardless! I also really enjoyed the Meat Pie Minnies and the Polo Club Suya! Seeing this pop up in the Post Oak area last year, a coworker mentioned this spot as the place to check out. The girlfriend and I decided on an early dinner here on Sunday, the day after valentine's day. We left as ChopnBlok fanatics that are looking forward to our next return. Walking in, you're greeted by a smiling staff with aromas of spices and cocktails as you get walked to your table. Once seated, we got down with some handcrafted drinks which included the following: Dodo Old Fashioned - 9/10 Tamarind Manyarita - 10/10 Redbush Sidecar - 8/10 The Chopman - 10/10 The Manyarita and Chopman are the signature stars of the cocktails and rightfully so. Each has the perfect blend of sweetness, sourness, tart, and alcohol. The Old Fashioned and Sidecar are tasty as well, both were enjoyed by me although I'll admit I wish I ordered the other two previously mentioned. The gin n juice is a popular one and we'll definitely get that next time. A frozen cocktail, the server was kind enough to let us sample it and it gave us reminders of that classic Snoop Dogg track: mind on your money, money on your mind! For starters, we ordered the deviled scotch egg (8/10) and the suya & cheese pie minnies (10/10). The deviled scotch egg is an egg with the deviled spiced filling served in a ground spiced fried turkey shell; definitely your thing if you like spice. The suya & cheese pie minnies were savory and succulent with perfectly melted cheese and suya meat having the blend of spice and richness in the golden pie exterior; absolutely deliciousness. Now for entrees, my girlfriend ordered the Golden blok (10/10) w/ chicken while I decided on the greens & tings (10/10) w/ chicken and shrimp. Both dishes are superb with different taste profiles. The golden contains a jambalaya-type rice w/ curry and stewed plaintains so spiciness and richness from the rice and curry came into play and the plaintains gave a nice sweetness. The greens & tings contained tender rice mixed with greens (i.e. spinach, cilantro, herbs, etc.) and some yaji veggies with chicken mixed in and topped with 4 large seasoned shrimp. This was one of the best rice dishes I've ever had in my life; the rice was cooked perfectly with excellent flavors from the greens and spices and the meats (chicken and shrimp) both extremely tender. The portions are quite large so we had plenty to take home for lunch the next day. I recommend you make a reservation on OpenTable because if we hadn't done that, no way would we be getting a spot there. Also parking is limited so be prepared to walk a ways if you have to park a few blocks down. Take those into consideration as you plan your next meal here. My friends in Houston brought us to dinner here because they've heard only raving reviews of ChopnBlok since they moved here. This spot has even won numerous awards, including being on the 2025 MICHELIN Guide Bib Gourmand list. Firstly, the vibes are really fun here. There's a DJ in the front playing a great mix of afrobeats and rnb. We didn't make it in time to Happy Hour, so we ordered from the regular menu. The bowls can be sufficient for one serving, however it's a TON of food. Our party of 4 shared 2 bowls and 2 small plates and at least two of us were STUFFED by the end (the guys in our group probably could have eaten a bit more). The bowls are also incredibly rich in flavor, so this isn't your typical fast casual bowls we're talking about. The Golden jollof rice and the yassa curry in the Black Star bowl were seriously so so good. I'd order again in a heartbeat. The food came out surprisingly quick too. While it would have been nice to have the small sides come out early as apps, all of it came out at the same time shortly after we ordered. We were in and out within an hour because of how fast the food came + how good the food was we finished it so fast! One thing that could've been better: The music, while great, is a bit loud, which means everyone is speaking quite loud indoors, so the volume level is quite high. If you have only been to ChopnBlok for dinner, do not sleep on their happy hour. I have been here a few times for dinner, but this was my first time stopping in for happy hour, and it was a really good experience. I will say it can be a little confusing when you first walk in trying to figure out where to check in, since it is not right by the main door. Happy hour runs from 4-8, which is a great window, and you have the option to sit at the full bar or make a table reservation. It can get busy + bustling inside so I would definitely recommend making a reservation. That said, the happy hour is definitely worth it. The prices are great, and I really liked that there is a variety of both drinks and food from the regular menu available at a lower price. It still feels like you are getting really good value for what you pay. They also offer complimentary valet parking, which is a nice perk. Just make sure to bring cash to tip. Our server Tiffany was super nice (it was pretty busy but she was very attentive) and gave us lots of recommendations, which made the experience even better. read more

Chopnblock was a great meal! The food was superb, price was reasonable, and ambiance was great. FOOD: first and foremost, the food was just great-- balanced, filling, flavorful, but without being too heavy. i felt great after the meal. I had the steak goddess salad which was such a great salad because it was so much more. It had grains, plantains, steak, and a great dressing. Highly recommend this item. I forgot what the plantain chips with the green veggies was called but it was so unexpectedly delicious! I also got the greens and tings with shrimp. Everything was fresh and delicious. Our server was friendly and attentive, especially given the number of tables he was waiting on. The place was packed and vibey with EXCELLENT music. This was a very enjoyable lunch/early dinner, aside from the rude valet guy on the front. Everyone else was pretty pleasant. This place was crowded, with about a five hour wait since we didn't have a reservation, but we managed to get seats at the bar. The bartender, Bartholomew, was super friendly and helpful and explained everything on the menu. We even received a tasting plate so we could try the different bases and sauces in sample portions, which helped us know exactly what we wanted in our dishes. I liked how you can interchange the sauces and rice with yourmeals to give everything a different spin. It feels like an upscale African Chipotle. But not an average place. The food was so good I couldn't finish my bowl. I only ate a little bit of it. We also tried the meat pies, the suya, and the shrimp. The suya was really good. The shrimp were just ok and didn't have much flavor, possibly overcooked. The meat pies were also just ok. Overall, between the service, food quality, and ambiance, I'm giving this place five stars. I feel like most of the staff interacted with us to make sure we were ok.....special shout out to EJ. He was super funny and friendly. Knocked my sock off. A friend brought us here while visiting, and I'm going to dream about this place for a while. Incredible flavor in the curries, fantastic quality meat. Loved the plantains in my dish. Our server was exceptional and brought us samples of each curry and rice to try. We were able to mix and match curry, meat, and rice for our bowls. Just phenomenal. Huge fan of West African restaurant ChopnBlok--and glad they have a brick and mortar location that offers an elevated experience that differs from their Post location. First, reservations are HIGHLY recommended, even for lunch. They have bar seating, dining area table service (no counter service), and there's a small patio. Chips and dip are a must to start your meal. Expect Liberian greens (give me an entire plate of that, please) served with plantain chips. Currently craving as I type this... It was hard to choose between all of the entrees, love a hearty stew! Opted for the Golden. Solid choice, but next time I'll ask to sub the smoky jollof jambalaya with the Liberian rice or steamed rice (I don't eat red meat or pork and noticed the jambalaya had meat). Portions are plentiful so prepare to take home some hearty leftovers. Looking forward to going back for more of those Liberian greens. read more
