I thought Chopt was OK/three stars. My wife liked it better than me and would rate this place four stars. I'm not opposed to it. At the time of writing this review, Yelp's average rating for this Chopt location is 3.5 stars (92 reviews) so it's pretty spot-on, in my opinion. If you're in the mood for salad, this place suffices. While Chopt isn't bad, I wouldn't put it among my favorite salad bars/greens and grains bowls restaurants. For example, in Chapel Hill, I like nearby CAVA better for both taste and portion size: https://www.yelp.com/biz/cava-chapel-hill-3. Currently, in the Triangle, there are three Chopt locations: this one in Chapel Hill and two in Raleigh. This Chapel Hill location opened in June 2017. The chain has been around since 2001 and has locations up and down the East Coast. This was our first visit to any location. I'm pretty sure the business is named Chopt because they literally chop your salad as part of the ordering process. The setup is fast-casual, like a Chipotle, with fresh, customizable ingredients selected and placed into your bowl upfront, then chopping with dressing applied and bread added, and then payment. Drinks, eating utensils, napkins, condiments, etc. are self-serve. During our visit, Chopt had several salads with preset ingredient combinations priced around $8-12 each. There were seasonal offerings and warm bowls too. My wife got one of the Chopt Classic salads and I got a Warm Bowl. Everything on the menu was low-calorie. I've got to hand it to Chopt for keeping it healthy, something very rare for restaurants. Salads ranged from as little as 245 calories (Sesame Ginger Crunch, $9.89) to 715 calories (Harvest, $10.99). My wife had the Santa Fe (450 calories, $8.99) with grilled chicken added (+$2.99). The Santa Fe came with avocado, grape tomatoes, corn, Pepper Jack cheese, crispy shallots, and romaine lettuce with Sweet & Smoky Chipotle Vinaigrette dressing. I had the Mediterranean warm bowl (610 calories, $10.49). The Mediterranean came with warm grains or cauliflower rice (I chose warm grains) with Lemon Tahini Dressing, roasted chicken, cucumber and tomato salad, local feta cheese, Mama Lil's spicy peppers, cabbage and cilantro blend, and crispy chickpeas with a House Vinaigrette. At the end of the chopping and mixing process, we were both asked if we wanted bread. We both said yes. In general, I thought the salads were A-OK. All of the ingredients were fresh and overall, the salads were flavorful and satisfying enough. I will say these salads didn't leave me feeling as full as other salad/bowl restaurants, but those other restaurants typically serve more (calories) at more cost. So, if you're trying to diet or eat healthy, I do think Chopt is a fine option. We dined in for dinner and while we didn't feel hungry leaving the restaurant, we could have gone out for dessert somewhere. We ended up having mango sticky rice later that evening. I thought the salads were crisp and well-balanced. The half-slices of bread were tasty. I'm not sure what kind of bread Chopt uses. It's marketed as "Artisan Bread." Speaking of which, there was a sign inside the dining room that listed the restaurant's "Local Partners & Favorite Artisans." For example, the cucumbers, cabbage, and grape tomatoes were all local to North Carolina, the onions came from Georgia, and meat like beef and bacon came from South Carolina. My wife's Santa Fe bowl was served in a clear plastic container and my Mediterranean warm bowl was served in a compostable paper container, presumably because it was warm. All orders are designed for takeout, which is what I observed most customers do during our stay. The dining room was modern, spacious, and clean. They have an uncovered patio with umbrella-covered tables too. Chopt is located in the Eastgate Crossing shopping center on the northeast side of Chapel Hill. Same shopping center as Trader Joe's, two doors down from Chipotle, on 15-501 (the Fordham Blvd stretch of 15-501). Service was good from everyone. Chloe P checked us out. I was so excited to try Chopt but was a little underwhelmed by my experience. The ordering process is not super intuitive and the person who took my order was not very patient in explaining the process to me. However, the rest of the staff was incredibly nice and helpful. The food itself was a bit bland and dry. There is SO much lettuce in the bowl. I appreciate the big salad but it kind of overtakes the rest of the flavors and is not at all proportionate to the dressing. I prefer other similar restaurants, but at Chopt, you get a lot of food for a decent price. I would like to go back and try one of their wraps. read more

I wish I could keep my 5 star review, but the last 2 times I ordered delivery from here, they forgot my protein. Why would I pay more than $15 for a salad that doesn't have any chicken?? This is honestly really sad because I genuinely liked Chopt and its quality of food. Now, even excluding the protein problem, the broccoli is hard and the sweet potato is never fully cooked. I had high hopes and I confounded myself. I studied the menu on the wall for a long time, but I heard the guy ahead of me get the "mumble mumble jerk chicken" and I thought okay that's the answer. It was on a placard near the ordering line. Well I eventually had to have the worker and me yelling back and forth thru our face masks DO YOU WANT CAULIFLOWER RICE?? // I DON'T KNOW JUST DO IT REGULAR for a while. Yum! We ordered from this place for the first time and were impressed. I got the kale caesar salad with grilled chicken, my boyfriend got the sante fe salad with panko crusted chicken. He got the sweet and smoky chipotle dressing and fair warning it's quite spicy. The quality of the food was great and the flavor was more than expected. Recently, whenever I visit Chopt my order is incorrect. I always order the same customer craft salad. On the last three (3) occasions my salads (multi salad orders) were missing avocado, which is an additional charge. Maybe curbside pick up has contributed to this location being sloppy, because most people can't afford to waste their time driving back. To make things worse, the salad I ordered on July 30th contained a hard, chiseled piece of plastic that I bit down on, hurting my tooth. The piece of plastic was pretty sharp and I could have easily swallowed it, posing additional safety concerns. This place needs to get it together. read more

I ordered the orchard, which is a pre-designed salad with greens, grilled chicken, tomato, apple and balsamic. Even though it was not a custom salad, they forgot to put chicken in my salad and charged $11 for it. Halfway through my salad I realized this and went back to ask about it, and instead of refunding the amount of chicken, they dumped me a cup of chicken. Grilled chicken was wet, cold and gross and I honestly think the salad was better without it. My goodness the interior was impressive. It looks like a boutique salon. It's very warm and clean in design. They keep it well maintained and there's lots of seating inside along with front porch seats. I ordered the Chicken Tinga ($10.50 ish). It comes with a decent amount of meat that was well marinated. The veggies tasted fresh and you get a good amount of them. I asked for no cheese at which point I was told I could substitute it for anything other than proteins and something else that I can't remember. You get a tiny piece of baguettee for free as well. The workers were all very friendly and helpful. The whole experience was good. It is a bit much for a salad but these days a meal cost around $9-10 so you're not too far off here. read more

Very friendly staff! Fresh ingredients and good portions. The salads even come with a slice of artisan bread. There is also fresh infused water to drink while you are in the store. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is Because i didn't love the options for the salads they designed. None seemed super appealing to me. I definitely could have designed my own but my thinking cap was not on at the time. If you have ever been to 'diced' in cary, it is very similar (although diced has more suggestions for salads). It can be tough finding healthy food in the south, but with this place opening and a juice spot across the way...I'll say the Triangle's getting more green! I love coming here to make my own salad, or try one of the monthly specials they have. The low-cal drinks are also really good, and I'm glad they list the sugar content for all of them. I have really, really come to appreciate the product that chopt delivers. It's good food. I have tried and enjoy nearly everything on the menu. Service is decent for a QSR in 2019, and is very quick. Love coming here. Here's my thing--why does a company that purports to be dedicated to sustainability: -not recycle? -use plastic cups and utensils? -give me a tray with my bowl when I do not ask for one? I love salad places and truly believe that we can never have enough of them. Chopt's menu is awesome, portions are large, and the ambiance is so nice I'd love to hold an event there (not sure if they do this, just sayin'). Parking was a breeze in the lot right outside the building. I got the spicy cashew soba noodle bowl and the Mexican chicken soup. The noodle bowl was 90% greens, but that's ok- I'll know for next time. The portion you get with the bowl/soup combo is also smaller than a regular portion, so just beware. Still a delicious and healthy meal. I need more of these in my life with all the unhealthy options available to me! :) The Mexican chicken soup was amazing- warm and with a strong lime flavor, which I love.
