I decided to check out Chopt for a healthy lunch alternative recently. It is very similar to Happy and Hale in concept and like H&H they have signature salad combos to choose from or you can roll your own. I decided to go with the signature and had the California steakhouse salad. The cost was around $10. The ingredients were BN Ranch grass-fed steak, Mama Lil's spicy peppers, charred red onion, Chopt lettuce blend & romaine. I went with the suggested dressing. I was a little disappointed the steak was thinly sliced. For some reason, I was thinking steak grilled and cut into chunks. The salad was pretty good but very tangy with the dressing. They definitely give you a big sized portion! Overall, I liked Chopt well enough, but personally, I prefer Happy and Hale and thus compared to H&H, 3 stars. read more

CHOPT Well, the name really clarifies the carnage you will witness. When they asked if I wanted it chopped, naively I said yes, assuming that otherwise I'd just be given a head of lettuce and a knife. Oh no. Instead they chopped it like there was a competition going on and quite fairly, my server won. That sh*t was chopped, let me tell you. I couldn't identify anything but the lettuce and I had ordered a salad which had both chicken and cheese. At the end, the pieces were so small that when I picked them out individually, I literally could not tell you which was which, not by sight and not even by taste, and it was spicy chicken and spicy cheese!!!! I won't go back until all my teeth are gone. Having said that, if you are missing a lot of teeth and cannot chew things, no worries...Choppt has you covered. They've got your back, friend. To say I am a regular at Chopt is an understatement - a bit embarrassing I know! I go to this location in Chapel Hill on at least a weekly basis. I have had good experiences and not so good. One thing that is consistent is the salads! They are consistently YUMMY and addicting. You can however tell when they are busy and don't spend as much time on crafting and chopping. Chopt advertises that they sell dressing in bottles (around $5). However, I have asked 3 different times at this location for the Spicy Sesame and told they didn't have enough to sell. This is really the only compliant I have. Most of the time the staff are friendly. BONUS: UNC Chapel Hill Students receive 15% off. SO helpful for a broke college student. read more

Eating at Chopt is such a treat! It makes me feel like I'm in a trendy neighborhood in LA or NYC, and they can actually make kale taste good. All of the ingredients and dressings they offer add bold flavors to the salads without a lot of added calories (most salads are under 600 calories), so you can feel really good about your meal. Chopt allows you to customize your salad, but I usually struggle to decide what flavors will go well together so I stick to the pre-designed salad menu. My favorite salad is the Chicken Tinga which comes with Mexican Goddess dressing. After sampling a few of the salads I would recommend choosing the braised chicken rather than grilled because it has a lot more flavor, and I think the grilled chicken tends to be a little dry. I'm also a big fan of their flavored lemonades and iced teas, and the sourdough bread that comes free with a meal. The interior of the restaurant is really fun, and they always play chill reggae music which is guaranteed to de-stress you. The only downsides to eating at Chopt are the prices (but hey, it's worth the splurge) and the fact that there is usually a lot of traffic going in and out of the East Gate shopping center. read more

I got a CYO salad here the other day. Walked inside, everything was clean and staff were there ready to take my order. I got a romaine salad with Caesar dressing and a few jazzy toppings- pickled onions, cucumber, plus the usual Parmesan and croutons. It really hit the spot, and the portion was big enough to save some for dinner later. The inside of the restaurant and restrooms were super clean. I was REALLY excited about this place, their menu looks delicious, I wanted to eat everything they had on their toppings bar, and I loved the dressing options. They also had a nice assortment of teas and lemonades, yum. They only had 2 soups and they only gave you a tiny piece of bread if you asked for it so that wasn't great. I ordered a quinoa bowl with the suggested Pepper dressing, assuming it was like a black peppercorn but in fact it was a firey hot dressing made with hot peppers. My mouth was burning so much I didn't really eat the salad which was a bummer after paying $16+ ($4.99 for like 8 shrimp was pretty sad. I think a better description of the dressings or a taste test would have been helpful but I was pushed (literally) along in line so quickly I didn't really get a chance to think about my options. I'm not a huge fan of their bread that they offer as it has a weird texture, imo. It is a little expensive, but the size of the salad can easily be split into 2 separate meals. Also, Chopt offers a 15% student discount if you show your UNC OneCard! I'm not sure if this is a recent change since the sign on the door was verrrry small, but I was really excited to save a little money and eat healthy. My total for a Kale Caesar salad + Sanpellegrino Limonata was $9.80, which isn't too bad at all. The people that I have encountered here have been nice and courteous. There is a lot of inside seating with lighting and there is also an outdoor area. It's a great place to grab a bite and chat with your friends as the atmosphere is really nice. read more

Nice upbeat vibe in Chopt! I visited with my kids (9 and 14) which was a bit overwhelming due to them building their own salads and being presented with way too many [unfamiliar] options. Once we built our own salads and had them chopped to perfection, we settled in a nice booth right next to a massive window with great sunlight. The salads were soooo good and plentiful along with the piece of bread they give you. No soft drink machines here - you have a choice of lemonades and teas. They are an acquired taste but mix the lemonade with the raspberry tea and add a little sweetner and it's all good. Shout out to Trina at the Chapel Hill location! One of my favorite lunch spots when I lived in Washington DC..so glad we finally got one here. Imagine a chipotle like place for salads, except with more options. You can choose one of their "signature" salads, or customize your own starting with a base of 6-8 different types of greens, and adding a huge variety of toppings from shrimp and turkey to beats and barley. All of the ingredients taste quite fresh, and they also bring in some interesting seasonal one as well. Their signature move is the way they "chopt" their salad. Using a big crescent shaped blade, after tossing your salad with the dressing, they chop it up quite small--I wouldn't have thought it before, but it does make it much easier to eat than other salads I've had. Line can get long at lunch, so plan ahead...but an excellent addition to healthy eating in Chapel Hill! read more

They put so much in this little bowl and then you are left thinking "how am I going to eat all that in this little bowl'? Then on down the line, they chop it for you. I had the summer picnic salad with the Shishito Pepper dressing. It was pretty good although not much in the way of snap peas (1or2). Also sparse on the sunflower seeds. The herbs were pretty good. Very unique offerings! While they were out of avocado for the salad I selected (probably cost related, avocados having a major shortage right now) they did allow me to replace it with any other ingredient. They were also out of the soup I wanted, but it was ~an hour before closing time, so also understandable. I was not offered or given bread (which another review mentioned); it does say free "with a meal" so maybe you need to get a combo for that? I ordered one of the destination salads, which was a spicy sonoma caesar. I was a little too overwhelmed by all the options to build my own salad on my first visit, but might try it next time. I felt the flavors were well balanced even without the avocado, though it might have helped tone the heat down a bit if it was present (the peppers were kickin'!) The selection of teas and lemonades looked great though I did not try them this time. Overall, I felt there were a TON of tasty, healthy options where I didn't have to sacrifice flavor for healthy consciousness. I went back to Chopt and had the Mexicali Vegan with roasted sweet potatoes, black beans, tortilla chips, jalapeño peppers, romaine and spinach, which I made vegetarian with a 79-cent add-on of Jack cheese. Got it with the recommended Mexico can Goddess dressing and a free slice of bread, which I tore up and mixed into the salad.. I really didn't think it would fill me up. However I was pleasantly surprised! I could barely (but I did) finish it. This was a terrific salad, especially with the MG dressing. Just a warning though, if you're not used to eating hot peppers, tell the salad maker to go easy on the jalapeños. They are fresh, not pickled, and pack a punch of heat! read more

Overall very good. Sometimes they mess the order up, so you need to check that key ingredients are there (like Avocado - which they often forget). Also, you need to watch out for stems of peppers or avocado that are hard (that they should have removed). But that happens infrequently. Today was our first time at a Chopt. We like the concept and the creativity of the types of salads. A little pricier (our only reservation about the place) than competitor Saladworks but much better. Staff was great and very upbeat and when they learned it was our first time they said to stay and watch the prep - very cool. I had the Mediterranean Falafel salad and wife had the Mexican Caesar sans chicken. We like the selection of iced teas and lemonades and tried several. A piece of complimentary rustic bread also comes with each salad. Again, much better that the non-descript roll you get at Saladworks. What we really appreciated was the "to go" plastic bowls that you can get if you wanted to take the rest of your salad home, as they are fairly large. We did. In fact, if you wanted a light meal and not bring something home, a couple could split a salad and pair it with a soup. The other thing I appreciated is that they have a chalk board where they list all of their partners where they get local produce and bread. Great to see a company give a shout-out to other folks and that they are supporting local farmers. As Ahhhnold said in "The Terminator" - "I'll be back". Won't be as often as I would like since we live 35 miles away, but their take-out menu and online menu gives us some ideas to ramp up our salads at home. First of all, I am grateful there are some places around the triangle like Chop where you can eat healthy. I found the menu board to be a bit overwhelming and stood reading it for a long time. Non of the salads besides options to make your own, seemed to include many vegetables. You get a really good base of greens but I'd like something that comes with cucumbers, peppers red or green, carrots, tomatoes, celery, onions and radishes, etc. You can make your own salad that comes with 4 verges and then each additional is around .80. I think I'd rather be paying by weight. I don't remember the cost but added proteins are pretty expensive. Service was a mix from very friendly to all business and let's do that quick. They don't recycle which is a big turnoff for me and being that nothing else really impressed me, I will probably look for something else healthy for lunches.
