I made this silly deal with myself that if I was going to eat out for lunch, I had to have a salad. So, first on deck, Chop't. I customized my salad: spinach and kale, shrimp, black beans, corn, jalapeños, and this avocado tomatillo dressing. Well, what did we learn, ladies and gentlemen.... We already knew Chopt gives you a ton of greens. The entire bowl is nothing but greens, then a little bit of everything else. Well, except for dressing. I had to stop the guy from pouring the contents of the bottle on my salad. It was tasty, fibrous, tasty, and fibrous. And did I say FIBER-ous! I'll be back for my next salad someday soon. I placed two separate orders on two different days and I have someone pick it up for me since I'm stuck in an office. I always include additional notes and always double check that my order is correct. Order #1 came as a salad bowl instead of coming as a wrap and it didn't come with a side of dressing. Order #2 didn't include bread or a side of sauce that was requested. If I could choose another location, I would but this is the most convenient one for the person who does me the favor in picking it up. Over all a good place if your looking for a salad. My biggest complaint about it is that it's kind of expensive for a salad. $10 for lettuce and some toppings? I can go get a burger at lunch for this price. But if your heart is set on salad then you've found a good spot. There are tons of different opinions, add ons, proteins and dressings. I'm pretty set on my "go to" build my own. It includes lettuce and 4 toppings that they call "choppings" and dressing. You are up charged for protein , cheese, grains, nuts, and things deemed "premium" veggies like spicy peppers or beats. Busy location, often hard to find a seat during normal eating hours. Excellent place! The salads are HUGE, a bit expensive, but like others have said, they can be split, etc...My favorite is the Chop't Ten Vegetable and I add chicken to it. Yum! The dressings are wonderful! I love the Diet Cherry fountain soda they have. The only fault I find is the way the lines are handled. I'm a fan of make your salad, as I've ordered quite a few of these in NYC for lunch. It gets expensive but the quality of greens and veggies are top notch. Very efficient service and I love the chopping before dressing gets added. I came here 3 times for lunch. I spent about $10- $11 per meal with a drink. I got creative as I got more comfortable with this place. I combined spinach and romaine ( boost nutritional value), and mixed balsamic and dijon vinaigrette together. Their dressing is a bit bland, but I think it's because they're healthier. I love that they have sea salt and fresh black pepper grinders on every table. Let me first say I ordered through door dash. The salad was pretty good and advertised at $12.64. But you pay $.79 for everything you add to the salad. In their defense, they are located in the heart of Chinatown and I usually go during lunch. My issue with this location is the employees. The people that work here clearly do not enjoy chopping salad because you almost have to beg them to hmmmmm...let's see... properly chop your salad. Let's try not to name the place "Chop't" if my preference for a finely chopped salad is going to annoy you! Great salads for not the greatest price. They're a bit expensive (range from $10-$14) but they're big and tasty. I'm sure a lot of people can get two meals out of a single salad. Only problem is salads aren't the best after they've been sitting around with dressing on them for a couple hours. If you're thinking of splitting the salad into two meals and you don't want a soggy second meal, ask for the dressing on the side. Problem solved! With the HUGE selection of salad components, it's possible to eat here every single day for years and never get the same salad. Plus, every 3 months I believe, they rotate some "seasonal" items. A lot of times I'm overwhelmed so I just end up sticking the my usual; which I'm perfectly happy with. The line gets long here during lunch hour during the week so beware. However, they do a pretty good job staying organized and working efficiently. And to tell you the truth, they almost never mess up the order even with all the chaos. read more

Ever since I read about a cockroach that was found in a Sweetgreen salad last week (https://www.popville.com/2016/03/shudder-recoil-shudder/), I haven't had the heart/appetite to return to my beloved salad chain and have abandoned it for the disappointing pastures of Chop't. I headed there last night to pick up a quick post-workout salad, opting for the Mexican Caesar, which the menu alerted me was a "FIRST TIME FAVORITE," probably because it's dull enough that first-timers will think that Chop't can't mess it up too badly. With Cotija cheese, jalapeno peppers, tortilla chips & romaine lettuce, it's not the most exciting or filling thing in the world, so I also added chicken + avocado (an extra $2 for avocado, but I needed my healthy fats). The Mexican Caesar was...ok. They were out of regular Caesar dressing (how can a salad place not have the most classic varietal of all dressings?!), so I went with the suggested Mexican Caesar dressing. Though I love spicy food, the dressing was overly spicy for my tastes, really packing a punch, and the neon orange color was more than offputting. Should've gone with balsamic. The other downside is that they don't offer complimentary bread with your salad, as my beloved Sweetgreen does. Or maybe they do, but nobody offered it to me? Regardless, my meal felt incomplete without some carby side. The salad combinations offered at Chop't aren't particularly interesting or delicious -- and there's no feeling of freshness, perhaps because it's in the heart of dirty old Chinatown. They chop up the salad real good! I guess that's what it's called "Chopt". They use the Mezzaluna to really dice up the ingredients which I like. And even though the employees chopped up the salad quite a bit, he asked me if I wanted it chopped up more. On my most recent visit, I ordered the Palm Beach salad. It was quite tasty, but didn't get the Palm Beach vibe from it. Maybe because it is still cold outside during March. Nevertheless, it has avocado, grape tomatoes, cucumbers, and several other items. I got the chicken in it with balsamic vinaigrette. I like that they asked me what dressing I wanted even though the salad normally comes with hot honey vinaigrette. They also have the options for several soups, which maybe I will try next time. Like many fast casual restaurants, Chopt has an app where you could get rewards. Most restaurants provide a reward for just downloading the app for your first order. Chopt has no initial reward. In addition, my purchase was not recorded into their rewards program. In short, it appears that their app does not work properly. Please fix it. Although there is some seating in here, I'm not so sure you'd want to stay here for too long. While I was ordering, some homeless guy walked in, just laid his head on one of the tables, and was making grunting sounds. He stunk up the place. Don't get me wrong, I feel bad about homelessness, but this homeless man can't just be making Chopt his temporary home. It will definitely shoo customers away. We've ordered delivery from here once a week for a few months. The order is never right--small things like the wrong dressing, an extra/missing ingredient, or missing bread. Orders often get canceled after 30 minutes of waiting which is more annoying. Obviously we keep ordering because the food is good. Maybe things will get better after the pandemic is over and they're less overwhelmed. Our decision to order depends on whether we feel like gambling that day. read more

I'm not huge on reviewing chains, but I can't help it here because chopt has become an unexpected favorite. Who wants salad? Not me. But they make salads delectable. The options are tremendous, with dozens of veggies to add and dressings to spice things up. My choice is the mexicali vegan, which is greens, black beans, tomatoes, jalapenos, avocado, hearts of palm, and I like to add beets. The ingredients are fresh and delicious. With just a hit of mexican goddess dressing, this thing bursts with flavor unlike any salad I've ever had. Nutrients, deliciousness, reasonable prices, and in the heart of downtown? Can't beat it. I love the chopt scythe design to the lighting as well. They get packed at lunch but are experts at moving the line along quickly. read more

Since the line was already wrapped around one block and working on #2 we were a bit skeptical about the chances of getting anything to eat before it was time for dinner. Fortunately a really nice guy came by and handed out free lunch coupons to those of us who were stuck at the back of line, and informed us that they would likely be running out of food very soon. Instead of coming back another day we opted to head on over to Chinatown and get us some greens right then and there. The music in this place is a little too loud for no apparent practical reason. It makes it really difficult to understand what the people behind the counter are asking you, especially when you couple it with the overall busyness of the place at lunch time. On to the food! Since it was free I decided to go for the gusto and pick my favorite ingredients, hoping to start with the sublime and if I liked it give them a second chance. I went with a salad "sandwich" which is more like a wrap, and if you load it up even closer to a giant Chipotle burrito. I got the Romaine lettuce, with hearts of palm, Craizins, crunchy Asian sticks, tomato and grilled shrimp, with "Thai Rocket Fuel" dressing. They completely destroy your ingredients here, and while I realize the name of the place implies chopped up food I would prefer not to have it in a near-baby food state. I'm a big boy, I can handle it. The dressing was pretty much flavorless, except for a few hints of sweetness. I was expecting something at least mildly hot given the name, but nothing. The wrap is pretty much all lettuce, I got 5 shrimp in mine. All that aside, it did turn out ok, and it was definitely a nice alternative to the greasy lunches offered almost everywhere else in this neighborhood. However, even though I didn't pay for the meal, I did see how much it was, and for $11.50 I'm positive I would not order this again. Perhaps a different mix would be better than what I chose, but I don't think anyone else was overly pleased with the price:product ratio. I love salads. I first discovered Chop't when it opened in New York, and was happy that they came to DC. During my days in NYC, I loved how professionally thinly chop't the salads were so I could have these tiny dense bite-sized salad pieces. However, this location doesn't chop the salads as finely as my NYC experiences. They are a bit less generous, and my salad doesn't fill to the brim like I used to remember. I have recently began calorie counting, and Chopt makes is super easy to eat deliciously and flavorfully and keeps me full throughout the day. One salad always costs around ~$10 but lasts me two meals. Some of the more flavorful ones are the "hot" salad Braised Greek salad for ~590 calories (without dressing & bread), New England Harvest ~520 calories (without dressing & bread). I would suggest using the dressing they suggest on the menu. I did not enjoy the "Chopt Po'Boy" as much as the other ones. I was having a fried chicken craving, and it looked deliciously fried on the counter---but it was not good. It was cold, not crunchy--if you want fried chicken, get real fried chicken elsewhere. I wish they did not dose the salads with so much dressing so quickly because it is hard to tell them to stop when they already squirted a ton of dressing on the salad. If you're trying to eat a lighter meal, I would tell them beforehand. I like how they strive to use fresh ingredients and have fresh ground pepper, etc. This particular location can get pretty busy, and the tables are often dirty because of the high traffic. read more

After wearily watching a line of hungry people snake toward H Street, I resigned myself to the siren call of lunch at Chop't Creative Salad. I was impressed by the efficient line service and appreciated having a menu passed to me while in the queue. Ogling the long list of toppings, proteins, and dressings, I decided on a salad of Asian inspiration. Here's how it works: After telling the first salad maker your list of ingredients, you will stand before another person wielding a mezzaluna knife who will chop the salad to your specifications (I know some people have had overly chopped salads; the guys behind the counter were asking for preferences when I visited). Then, you choose from the 28 dressings (I had the carrot ginger and the Asian 5 Flavors blended together) and specify the amount of dressing you want. Once chopped, dressed, tossed, and tortured, your enormous salad is ready. The dressings and toppings were fine (I liked that the white cheddar was chopped and not shredded, so you could actually taste it), but not particularly exciting. And, as everyone has said, the salad was expensive! I know I didn't eat $3 worth of chicken. However, I probably got my money's worth in kalamata olives. And, I really like the concept of the ten vegetable salad, which comes with asparagus, peas, beets, carrots, mushrooms, hearts of palm, tomatoes, cucumber, and corn. Still, I wanted something more. And, I would definitely skip the desserts. I won't be making special trips here for lunch, but I may go back if I'm in the area and don't want Chinese or Thai food. So, I finally (FINALLY) got over to Chop't. The line wasn't out the door and I was psyched to check this place out. I gotta tell ya, I'm not all that psyched about it after my visit. Don't get me wrong, the salad was good. The chipotle vinaigrette dressing was quite tasty and they put just the right amount on. I made the mistake of ordering one of the salads that had shrimp on it. It sounded good - shrimp, avocado, lettuce, corn, some other salady stuff. Now I'm watching the guy make it up and chop it and I'll be darned if there were only two lousy little shrimp on my salad! Even my friend noticed and commented. I'm pretty sure that my salad price was higher because there were shrimp in there. In reality...not so much with the shrimp. Now, Chop't did redeem itself at the other end. As I was paying, I mentioned to the guy at the register that they really should put more than two shrimp on the salad. He said, "Are you sure?" I said, "yes, I'm sure and so is my friend here." He says, "well there's supposed to be 5." Me: "Yeah, not five." But, he made good on it. He brought me a small cup with 5 more shrimp in it. That was very cool of him and made this a 3 star review instead of a 2. The customer service was great. I'm sure I'll be back at some point. I do like salads. I know now not to order salad with shrimp. I will give Chop't another chance. Perhaps the rating will go up next time. read more

I came to Chop't for dinner on a Sunday and this place was PACKED. The line was nearly out the door and it didn't move all that quickly. I noticed that a lot of women were in line with their male counterparts holding tables....with Chipotle in hand. C'mon guys, salad's not that scary! The options were a bit overwhelming so I went with a predesigned steakhouse salad. I thought the chopping was a bit unnecessary... I would have been happier with just a good toss. It's a little disappointing reaching the free first four ingredients maximum in less than 30 seconds. I love to put a lot of things in my salad. Not only do I prefer large leafy greens, but I have braces. You know that whole embarrassing spinach-in-teeth scenario? Yeah, that happens to me all the time. Curtis jokingly calls those bits "flavor savers". Btw, I chose the chipotle dressing for the salad. That was yum, but they have other 27 dressings to choose from. Lunchtime at Chop't was insane. A line of people nearly out the door, a butt in every seat, and more salad tossing then... well, there was a lot of it. Despite the seeming chaos, I was thoroughly impressed that Chop't had several employees handling the line of customers - handing out menus, directing people where to stand to prevent a mob, and pointing them in the direction of available salad chefs. After a flurry of chopping, I had in my hands the palm beach shrimp salad - romaine, cucumber, tomato, avocado, palm heart, and shrimp. Topped all off with a spanish cucumber vinaigrette. This set me back $9 and change. I felt this was a bit steep given the low toppings to lettuce ratio. The salad itself? Good. Fairly filling. Nothing that disappointed, just nothing that wowed me. I think this place is a great addition to the area. I know I'll be back here for a healthy alternative to the other Chinatown spots. As it was though, with the price and the average taste of the meal, I'm just as likely to head around the corner to Five Guys for my lettuce (with burger, fries, and cheese!). read more

I'm doing three stars because after eating here many times, I have come to realize that $11 for a salad is a bad value. If you're assembling your own salad, you'll quickly see what I mean when you see how much a tiny helping of chicken costs! Other than that, it is a great place to come when in a rush-but definitely don't overdo it! Some of the employees are catty and will speak in Spanish about the customers--lucky for me I'm an undercover Latino (in DC) and can understand some of the smart-mouth things they say. One of the male employees that usually greets you and puts the lettuce/greens in the bowl is especially grouchy and pretty hateful. I have no idea why they keep him employed. I complained about some of the remarks to the Chop't website once, and the local management team promptly took care of it! So, hooray on that note! The line is VERY long during lunch time hours on weekdays (usually out the door), so be prepared if you're heading over for that! Luckily, the line does move quickly. If you're four people to the front door (outside) then your wait time will be approximately 15 minutes. Interesting note: The Chop't cards are different in DC versus NYC. The NYC Chop't cards don't have the complimentary drink or dessert, and the Chop't locations in NYC will not stamp them or accept them! read more

I stopped by here on my way home last night and OMG am I in love with this place. I have been waiting for a place like this to open around here for some time. I am trying to do some healthy stuff mixed in with my gaining weight request from the doctor's. So I decided to stop by and give it a try. I will say that some might find it expensive but I thought for what you get it was very reasonable considering the options in the neighborhood. Chef designed salads start at $5.99 and go up to $8.99 and they can turn anyone of these salads into a sandwich for you as well. These are salads they have put together so you don't have to choose your ingredients if you don't want. They have things like Caesar, Cobb, Santa Fe, Steakhouse, you get the idea. Basic salads start at $5.99 and go up based on the ingredients you put in your salad and the diversity of ingredients is great. The varied selection of chopping meats both regular and vegetarian, along with the fruit and cheeses selections was truly inspiring for me. It took me all of about 10 minutes to decide on what I wanted in my salad. I ended up choosing Iceberg & romaine lettuces with the following choppings; avocado, beets, chickpeas, crumbled egg, edamame, radishes, mushrooms, red onions, Albacore Tuna, croutons, and goat cheese with a sweet and smoky chipotle vinaigrette dressing for a total cost of $10.95. I had absolutely no complaints what so ever with my salad it was amazing and I have to say for the money was well worth it. So much so that I am going back tonight and take one home with me. They even reward frequent diners with a free salad after you purchase 9 you get the 10th one free. How cool is that! And the other cool thing I liked about this place was they have Boylan's sodas on tap. Who would have ever guessed you could get them from a fountain? I loved it - Orange Cream is for me and to be honest you can't go wrong with a Black Cherry soda either! So over all I would say this is a great addition to the Chinatown area as well as DC. You will find me stopping by all the time as they are open till 9pm. They are opening two other locations at 1300 Conn. Ave NW as well as in 1735 N. Lynn St. in Roslynn. 3.5 stars I like Chop't -- it certainly isn't perfect -- make your own get expensive quickly -- and would be good to know about about calories and such as some of the salads can't be all that calorie-friendly (the dressing containers are quite large). All of the choices are a bit overwhelming -- that all being said, it is a very good salad -- much better than what they call a salad at cosi and many other places -- next stop Chop't Conn ave....... For years I have always wanted a take out restaurant in the Penn Quarter that was not a magnet for mouthbreathing a-holes from "fly-over states". Chop't is FINALLY a place where I can get a healthy lunch quickly... Before you get in line could I ask a favor? Would you please please please FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU WANT...many of us want to get our food and get back to wherever we came from and do not want to listen to your fights, phone calls and clueless questions! As for the overpriced thing...get over it. Sorry but McDonalds has completely screwed our sense of quality food at a fair price (in McD's case it is shitty food for cheap). read more

I waited 15 minutes in line for a $9 salad. It was a very Californian experience mind you, as I waited in the long queue, saw the server chop up my salad and mix in the dressing. Very hip, energetic place. And hey, I'm a big supporter of healthy foods. And any salad with tofu, tuna, corn and romaine with the thai curry rocket fuel has got to be good for you. I've seen this place before but I never went in because the line goes around the block. But today, I had some time to kill. So I waited 15 minutes in line for a $9 salad. If I came by after 12pm I would have waited 20 minutes in line for a $9 salad. I'm gonna say that to myself tomorrow when I go across the street and buy a $6 salad at Clyde's in 2 minutes. I don't understand why people would consistently wait that long for a salad. The guys who work there aren't exactly Iron Chefs. And making a salad....welll....not rocket science. Props for being a salad place, but why would you intentionally wait 15 minutes for a $9 salad?? I say go here when there's no one around, but there is no reason to wait 15 minutes in line for a $9 salad. read more
