Came here with a girlfriend for the first time the other day. I'm from the West Coast, and we don't quite have the concept of fast food salad out there yet, at least not like this. It was fast and efficient, and all the salads on the menu sounded great. I really did have a hard time choosing. I finally settled on the Palm Beach Shrimp salad. This is where I probably went wrong. As I look back at the PDF menu so conviently available online, everything else sounds so much better. But this salad does sound good. And everything about it was, except for the shrimp... They tasted a bit funky and threw off the whole salad. Next time I'm going for the Harvest Cobb or the Monterey. Also a little pricey for salad. For a salad and a soda it was $11 and some change. The soda was great though. I've never had Boylans soda before, and I was very pleasantly surprised. I don't drink a lot of soda but I'd go for their diet root beer again anytime. I love the concept and the portions were quite generous. Everything on the menu (with the exception of anything dealing with shrimp) sounds amazing. I can't write this place off yet. I'm a big fan of good, healthy food fast so next time I'm in DC or NY I'll have to stop in again. Or maybe they will bring one of these to SF - they'd do well there. read more

I go into the Chinatown Chop't at least 3 days a week for lunch. It's one of very few places where I can get a good, healthy, vegan lunch in this area. Since I am a vegan, I always ask the people who are preparing my salad to change their gloves and wash their knives before chopping my salad. If I didn't, I would get wayward pieces of meat and cheese and egg in my salad, and that would be gross. They are used to my request at this point, so I don't even have to ask anymore, which is great. I also like that you have so many low-fat and low-calories dressings (Sweetgreen may be tasty, but low-calorie dressing are not as readily available there). Some people may complain about having to wait in line for a $8-10 salad, but frankly, I don't understand why people think good, healthy food should be cheaper than the food that's bad for you. And the vegan options at other places in the neighborhood are comparably priced. read more

I really like salads, even though I am quite the carnivore. But I like salads, especially interesting combinations to change it up a bit. I must admit when we got to chopt and saw the huge list of potential ingredients in a salad... I felt very overwhelmed! I went up and down, back and forth on the menu looking at all the choices of salad mixin's and just could not decide, so I wussed out and picked the cobb with chicken, since that is a salad that usually has everything I like (cheese, avocado, hard-boiled egg, bacon.... mmmm). The salad wasn't bad, but I'm not sure how much I liked it being cut up into little bits and pieces. I know that's the concept behind chop't... I mean it's in the name of the place! But call me crazy... sometimes I don't want my food to be practically pre-chewed for me! On a separate note... they had Boylan soda, which is a fountain soda (here at least) that makes use of real cane sugar as opposed to high fructose corn syrup. I had a sampling of each of the flavors, but liked the creme soda and the cola the most. The cola didn't taste like coke or pepsi at all. It wasn't as sweet either, I liked it alot. That says a lot coming from a girl who doesn't really like soda much... Anyways chopt is a pretty decent place to grab a salad for lunch or dinner. I like the variety of salads that you can order, I wonder if you can just ask them to not chop it up as much when you are placing your order. Guess I'll have to ask next time. ======== Oh, speaking as a nutritionist, I can't say that this is considered healthy fast food... which is probably the main consensus of the place. Yes raw veggies are good for you... but if you add all the yummy mixin's like cheese, dressing, meats... it's not as "healthy" as you expect. They do have a handy dandy nutrition brochure available, that publishes the calories, carb, protein, fat content of the ingredients. Today, my platonic girlfriend and I had a date in the city. We shelled out the grossly overpriced admission to check out the new Crime and Punishment museum and decided to grab some lunch afterwards. Having utilized the Washingtonian's Restaurant Finder before leaving we decided to settle on Chop't, only about a block away from the museum. Like many DC bites, Chop't is squeezed between the many buildings of the city and resembles any typical chain sandwich joint. In fact, Chop't is a chain, for now operating only in DC and New York City. The tight space has limited seating and on this sunny Saturday afternoon it was relatively noisy, but not to the point of annoyance or discomfort. The selection was overwhelming, my faithful companion and I struggled to make a decision, eventually both settling on the Po-Boy Salad (in sandwich form) with the recommended homemade ranch dressing. The sandwich was huge and certainly delicious. The freshness and crispness of the vegetables and the warm pieces of breaded chicken blended perfectly with the recommended ranch dressing. The proportion of dressing to filling was ideal, which was especially important since the "sandwich" version of the salad comes in a flat bread roll. I was afraid that the dressing might soak through and cause the roll to fall apart but to my pleasant surprise it stayed together perfectly. Indeed, the roll was so big I ended up eating most of it out of the bread with a fork but it was still completely satisfying. I couldn't write a review of Chop't without mentioning their soda fountain, which is entirely composed of Boyle soda, made with sugar cane. My soda of choice is ginger ale. I love Boyle soda and was so impressed to see a place having such a great selection in a fountain. It really added some bubbly goodness to my meal. So, in conclusion: two thumbs up for Chop't and their support of Boyle soda. read more

While I work near the Chopt at Union Station, and can park for free or walk from work, I often end up at this location, where I have to spend a bit of time searching for parking, sometimes walking far from said spot, and paying. So what makes me chose the harder route for a salad? This location offers the new warm salads from Chopt while Union does not. The warm braised chicken Tinga salad seems to be competing w Chipotle's salad bowl. Pretty decent. The staff here is more efficent, getting orders completed faster, more consistent w portion sizes, and throwing less of your salad on the floor during the chopping process. The store is clean, and feels brighter. Plus they keep much later hours than Union Station. read more

Submitting on behalf of a friend who doesn't have a Yelp account: I'm a bit of a health nut, and Chopt has been my go to place for years. Fantastic ingredients and really friendly people. I've been to several of the locations around DC and a couple in NYC. They're all great. I especially like the Chopt near Gallery Place. They remember me and have the dressings I want ready by the time I pay. I know several of the staff by face and Mary by name, because she introduced herself and always says hello. These guys really give you a level of service beyond what you'd expect from fast casual. Especially if you become a repeat customer and they come to recognize you. And given how healthy the food is, this is definitely a habit you want to acquire! read more

This is by far one of my most favorite places in the world!! I love salads, and I had previously lost weight with them! So inevitably I got a bit sick of the same ol small or too larger and overpriced portions! I came here and fell in absolute love! I only wish they would expand to us in the west coast! I don't eat salads. I hate salads. Salads & I are not on friendly terms. I LIKE CHOP'T. Amazing, I know! Trust me, my friends are amazed! Truly a feat of miracle! Although I usually pre-order & go pick up my food, I like the set-up in the actual establishment, a little salad assembly line. As my friend says, "Chop't is like the Chipotle of salads." The ingredients here are always fresh, bright & colorful & never wilted, very inviting, and the staff is typically friendly, patient & helpful. My favorite salad here is the Monterey, although I prefer it in "salad sandwich" (a.k.a. wrap) form because, as I said, salads aren't always my favorite (which is an understatement). Try it with corn & the smoky sweet chipotle vinaigrette. They've also got some unknown brand of soft drinks, chips & cookies -- all of which are EXTREMELY tasty. Don't be turned off by the brands you've never heard of! Yummm. I give Chop't only 3 stars because they kind of suck at putting together multiple pre-orders. We like to joke around my office that they get all the right ingredients in, but not necessarily where they belong. We'll sit around our lunch table yelling out stuff like, "Hey, there are apples in mine! Whose apples do I have?" and someone else will call back, "Oh, those were supposed to be my apples. Whose croutons are these?" Needless to say, we haven't placed any large Chop't orders lately. That said, if all you're ordering is something for yourself, it's worth it. Stopped in for the first time and was impressed. I got one of the premade Grilled Asian Salad. It was HUGE. I don't understand people complaining about the prices. WIth chicken, that salad was 6.99. A similar type place with simalar salads, Cosi, is smaller, crappy and costs more. I would come more often if it was located near my office in VA. They also have great soda's on "tap" - Boylans soda. Chop't has these little Frequently Asked Questions on some of the tables, and one of them mentions that it is NOT a health food restaurant. And it's true - if you put a ton of salad dressing on it, it's not healthy anymore. And I've learned that they will, if you don't ask them to go easy. That having been said, it's always delicious. I always get my salad as a wrap, because then it's like a healthy burrito! I'm also not qualified enough to design my own, so I just go with one of their pre-defined salads. The Cowboy Cobb and Chop't Po'boy are my favorites. Also, those FAQ signs on the tables? The base is a little mirror that's angled just right so you can make sure you don't have lettuce in your teeth. And that's just good customer service, if you ask me. read more

First let me start by saying that I love a good salad. LOVE. So imagine my excitement when I learned that Chop't would deliver to my job! *happy wiggles* That excitement unfortunately has become disdain, here's why: I have ordered from this particular Chop't at least 6 times and almost every single time there is a problem. 1st: I placed my order at 11:15, I did not receive my salad until almost 1 p.m. It's not that far away from my job (like 3-4) blocks so there is NO reason that it shouldve taken that long. It being my first time ordering from there however, I just chalked it up to the fact that it was raining. 2nd: The person taking orders told me I would have my salad in 40 minutes. The delivery guy showed up in 20. This wouldnt have been a problem had I not stepped out to get something to drink thinking I had more time to get back. 3rd: No problems. Surprise! I guess the 3rd times a charm, as they say. 4th: Delivery guy shows up and has no change. None. I mean what kind of delivery person delivers food to cash paying customers and doesnt carry at least a few ones?! So I had to jump through hoops to find someone in my office who had change so I could pay for my food. 5th: I asked for dressing both on my salad and on the side. I received a salad with no dressing...anywhere. Not on the salad, in the bag...nowhere. 6th: I placed my order at 11:06. I got my salad at 1 p.m. I am officially done with this location. Finished. I guess I have already previously reviewed this place! I visited again recently and once again felt it was mediocre. The dressing was somewhat wilted and definitely not as fresh as a $10 salad should be. I ordered the Steakhouse salad with the bacon Russian dressing. The salad wasn't the freshest. Better watch out, salad places are taking over DC. The chain at the forefront is Chop't, which is expanding like it's Starbucks and we're still in 1998. The food here can be tasty but be warned. Most of the flavorful salad options are terrible for you. Bacon, Avocado, lots of cheese and creamy dressings are just the start. Also, the salad makers go to town with the dressings- even if you ask for a little bit- so you're better off getting it on the side. You're better off getting tacos next door at California Tortilla or even a salad at Potbelly if you're trying to eat healthy. However, if you absolutely need a salad, Chop't isn't half-bad and the portions are big. read more

I had a real DUH moment my first time at Chop't. After I told the salad guy (salad artist?) what kind of salad I wanted, he put all the ingredients in a bowl, mixed them together, emptied them out again and started chopping away! OHHHHHHH. Thaaaaaat's why they call it Chop't. Anyway, I digress. I knew the basic deal. They have all sorts of fresh ingredients and dressings and you can either create your own salad or choose from a menu of pre-created ones. I enjoyed the fact they give you salad dressing recommendations for their own salads as I tend to get overwhelmed and draw a blank when asked "So, what kinda dressing would you like?" They were fast and efficient and did not hold back on the chopping. I also enjoyed their selection of interesting fountain sodas. The prices are average to slightly pricey (especially if you start adding fixins and desserts and drinks and shizz). There is actually a place in San Francisco I worked around that was very similar to this and quite a bit more expensive so I found this "cheap" in comparison. Minus one star for the lack of space and the way you have to sit really close to somebody you don't know when all you wants to do is eat your chopped up salad alone. Salad lovers unite!!! Right when I got off the metro, my friend and I were walking around looking for a good place to have lunch when we stumbled upon this place. There was a line OUTSIDE the door. As you know, that's always a good sign so we hopped in and waited. Luckily, it went by very fast and next thing you know we're in front of a board with a million salad combinations. I got the veggie powerhouse. At first, they just dumped ingredients in a bowl and it didn't look that appealing. BUT THEN! They dump it back out and chop it and mix it right then and there with the dressing!! GENIUS! I'm so sad there's none of these near Florida, I would eat here everyday! read more

In Palo Alto, California, there's a salad place called Pluto's. When I lived there, I ate at Pluto's, oh, I don't know, 4 times a week. You get to create your own salad, with meat, veggies, nuts, cheese, dressing, etc. I love that place. So when I discovered Chop't, I said to myself, "Self, you have to try this. It looks just like Pluto's!" But Pluto's is better. And cheaper. And that's saying something when the point of comparison is downtown Palo Alto. On the plus side, Chop't has a nice variety of fixings to choose from. And the salads are very large -- way larger than you need. There's a menu on the wall with some standard options, but I always just create my own. I wish they'd just tell me how many toppings I get to choose for the set price -- I'm sure it's on that wall-mounted menu, but for whatever reason I can't decipher that thing. Too much going on, and too long a line to stand there and ponder it. So I just throw in anything I want, and then stand agape at the price tag at the end. The negatives: The bread they offer with your salad is a thin piece of rather tasteless pita. And ask for your dressing on the side, or for them to go light on it, otherwise you'll be spending $10 or $12 on a bowl of sauce with some drowning bits of greenery. I'll likely keep going back in spite of its flaws because, hey, it's the closet thing to Pluto's I've found in DC. A refreshing place in a world filled with fried, unhealthy, fattening food, this place is located right at the Gallery Place/Chinatown metro stop and is a great stop for a quick meal. Chop't makes their own salad dressings and has almost any salad topping you could think of. Pick one of the salads already designed on the menu, or create your own. You can also make any salad into a sandwich. Although it is a bit pricey for a fast-food type place (around $7-$9), its relatively healthy, very delicious, and they give you a large serving of food. If you love HUGE salads this is a great place. I have had the steak asian salad which I love. Prices are a bit high but it is hard to eat this salad in one sitting (I recommend sharing it). Don't order a fountain soda from here if you want regular coke or pepsi. They have some independent company maintaining the drinks which comes in different flavors but I've tried most of them and they are a bit strange to my palate. I usually just get one of their fresh squeezed lemonades. Definitely worth trying. read more

Until Chopt, I never thought a salad could make me so full I wanted to puke. Or be so expensive that I wanted to puke too. But at least taste didn't make bile come to my mouth. Anyways, they give you a lot of lettuce, and let you make any salad you want. Tons of choices of toppings and dressings, but if you want some chicken on it, you can easily spend upwards of $15. The dressings are good. The line is always long. In theory it is healthy, but I have a feeling if you eat this much salad you probably aren't saving many calories. Good for dinner, not for lunch. Because the ingredients are all chopped up, the salads here are denser and much more filling than those at, say, Cosi. I always have plenty left over. You choose from tons of ingredients. At various times I've tried and enjoyed: arugula, mesclun, crumbled egg, kalamata olives, sundried tomatoes, apples, blue cheese, and the "secret" house dressing. LOOOOOOOVE this place. Please, please, please open one in Chicago. Stat. I love places you can go and feel good about your lunch choice. I love it even more when that choice even tastes GOOD, and uses unique combinations of food to bring you something new and fresh. My colleague and I walked into this place the other day for a quick lunch, and both of us couldn't believe our luck. Not only did we find salads that were huge, but they had awesomely fresh ingredients (mine was the cobb - feta, chicken, peppers and onions) with the spa yogurt dressing. How great is it that their dressings are homemade, flavorful AND less than 45 calories. Again, lots of love. A bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. While the line was consistently long, they work through it quickly and efficiently. Chop't has a lot of creative menu options, and almost all of them have delectable potential. Doesn't anyone else enjoy the semi controlled craziness that is 10 behind-the-counter employees, sharp blades, and tons of dressing squirt bottles? It could be the scene for an action movie. I buy in to Chop't. Yes, it's kinda expensive - but the variety is truly stunning and the process is fun. I find the salads fresh and delicious. And with some of the more "exotic" ingredients, buying a package of whatever that is and using it before it goes bad is a challenge in itself. I'm glad that Chop't has alleviated this post-modern burden for me. Dressing on the side is a MUST unless you want to eat some lettuce with your dressing. They way they dress the salads is just not very appealing, but the shape of the little "on-the-side" containers is a nice oval. I like it. I love this place so much-mostly because it is what I make myself for dinner at home most week nights! I am all about customization and Chop't really allows the customers to have whatever the hell they want! That being said, like any restaurant, there are healthy and unhealthy foods so if you are trying to get sexy for swimsuit season, I'm pretty sure you'd know not to go with the fried chicken. Like others have noted, they have DELICIOUS beverage options! I loved the diet black cherry soda-who knew!? One star knocked off because of the random tortilla they give you. I am not a salad person. So why did I go to a salad place to eat? Because it is healthy for you and we wanted to eat somewhere inexpensive. We also wanted an atmosphere where we could talk and it would not be too loud. So, Chop't it was. Here we go, the salads were delicious. I got the Steakhouse (because I'm a meat eater) with the steakhouse bleu cheese dressing. My date got the Puebla Cobb with Ranch dressing. The food had so much flavor for a salad. Mine came with steak, tomatoes, fried onions all chopped into romaine salad. The guy who was chopping our salads was pretty nice. He was joking with us about how chopping the salads is a good stress reliever. He said he never leaves the shop angry, haha. You have to love a guy who can joke about his job. Everyone else at the shop was amiable and kind as well. It's not often that you find a place that will make a person change their mind about food, but this place sure did for me. Overall, a quality, healthy option for lunch. I got the kale caesar, and I thoroughly enjoyed it as a simple option for a good lunch. The price is right for a salad too, since some places can really tend to overcharge, but I did get a pretty basic salad. The whole wheat flatbread is good but definitely thinner than most places. I, surprisingly, really loved the Diet Black Cherry soda. It was such a unique flavor that I have not had anywhere else. I would go back for that. read more

I'm here for a course and my classmates voted on this place (right next door to our building) three days in a row. The bowl is huge and you think you won't finish it, but it's very likely you will, and you won't feel like a ginormous pig afterward. I was a huge fan (despite the dubiously-high price for a salad...I mean, come on) but by day three (today) I'm kinda over it. I didn't finish more than 1/3 of my salad as it was super wilty and the ingredients did not mesh well together for some reason. Actually, it tasted kind of gross. Oh the ginger lemonade is pretty great. Remember to shake it every time you get a sip because the ginger tends to settle. read more

What I don't want is a bowl of green mush that looks like it's been pulverized in a blender. So hey Chopt, maybe chop a little less? Appearance aside, this location was a little grimy, as though they hadn't bothered to mop or clean in several days. The person making my salad didn't wear gloves, and refused to when asked. Line out the door everyday 11 to 2 for something simple as salad. The quality of ingredients is pretty high, but $10 for lettuce and dressing is kinda pricy. They do have a large assortment of veggies, meats and dressings. And any combination you get taste pretty good. Salad is salad. I don't remember when I've ever had a bad salad. Although I don't remember the last time I took a salad over a steak. But there is the slimming factor. I have crazy metabolism, salad or Big Mac, I'll still lose weight (lost 3lbs in Texas eating Texas food!) so that doesn't matter. And it seems kinda wasteful to spend that much on something I can probably make myself. But I'm lazy. Lettuce + tomatoes + dressing = too much trouble. Though this place is probably raking in the $$$. One, salads are cheap to make. And two, the immigration status of their staff seems really questionable (I think that sign above the cashier maybe telling us something [take a look at the picture I uploaded] ) so minimum wage is out the door. I'll give Chop't 4 stars (minus one star because it's a salad place and I have a pair of balls, but plus one star for helping DC girls stay fit thus helping me and my pair of balls stay happy). read more

One star--because I was very excited to redeem my free 10th salad, but when they swiped the card, they said I couldn't redeem it because it was registered in New York. Apparently, I have to go back on to their website to change locations. What kind of outdated IT system is chopt using?? For being able to redeem the salad, it means I've spent 100+ dollars at this place already. I can't even comprehend why this is an issue in this day in age. This review is of my experience at the chopt location in Chinatown, Washington DC. When I walked in this place I got really excited. Tons of fresh veggies, cheeses and every salad condiment you could ever imagine just sitting there waiting to be picked as a member of your custom salad. However it just doesn't work. I ordered the Santa fe chopt salad and basically it was a bucked filled with pulverized items you would normally find in a Santa fe salad. I only know this because I saw them make it, otherwise I wouldn't of known what the heck was in it. My girlfriend made her own salad and same thing, they chopt, beat and basically molested the produce until one couldn't tell what it was anymore. My salad was almost like a milkshake with lettuce. I did not want a milkshake, I wanted a salad. I teased my girlfriend as she took a bite of her custom salad and made funny faces. I pointed, laughed and then raised concerns about her salad making abilities. Should we ever get married its important she be able to make a good salad. Then I took a bite of my salad. I cried. It was bad and the mustard vinaigrette dressing was disgusting. We embraced each other and agreed this place sucked. Boy was I relieved. I think if they tossed the salads instead of beating them like they have misbehaved in Singapore, I think this place would be much better. I mean you order a salad and it's a mush combination with lettuce. WHAT A WASTE OF FRESH CUT AVACADO!! It was just mush. Both our salads looked good and then they chopt, beat and basically molested them until one couldn't tell what was in it anymore. If you're into that kind of thing this place is for you. Also, this place was busy as s*#t with a line out the door into 7th st. I just don't get why this place is so popular? IT SUCKS! Did I mention this place sucks? Oh and it's kind of pricey too. Salads are the new sandwiches. Clearly....why else would one pay between $5-$9 for one. Oh yes...your greedy eyes will not be able to resist the plethora of toppings one can put on a salad. So nice to convince yourself you are eating healthy. I'm sorry any more than 4 toppings tips you into grilled cheese territory. The folks at Cosi must want to fire bomb this place. I've completely stopped going to Cosi since they came to town. My other half is addicted to this place. Hence the $9 per salad price tag. I totally dig having a healthy option as a go to that is easy and customizable when I'm on the road. I have some food allergies so I aways go for the build your own version so that I can shy away from things that are trouble for me. Love how it gets chopped up and dressed so that you don't have toppings and dressing piled on top of a mound of lettuce that wound be impossible to stir through! The chipotle dressing is nice and spicy and they ask you how much you want so you can set the heat level too. The sea salt caramel is a lovely sweet bite at the end! This Chop't compared to others in DC is probably on the lower end. The salads here aren't made as great as they could be. Since it's located in such a high traffic area, I assume their main concern is making their salads as quick as they can to keep up with the high demand. I work close to this one, and whenever I do choose to come here I try to order online and avoid the crazy lunch hour line. It usually takes about 20min for them to have it ready and when you get there you skip the line and go to the register. Also, if you order before 12 online, you get a free topping to a customized salad. I prefer the kebab salad. Advice? Don't go online to look at the nutritional facts. read more
