Here's the trick to really loving CHOW: go early in the morning in the middle of the week, in the off-season. Do that, and you see CHOW at its finest: Excellent, attentive service, an unhurried kitchen to prepare your food perfectly, and plenty of elbow room. 4 stars for the food, 1 star for the service. The food is fresh and creative, unless you eat the hash which is boring and under seasoned. This is my fourth time at Chow, and I am done. The ridiculously unorganized service makes the whole experience not worth it. We were told 40mins, and ended up waiting closer to 90. There seems to be no rhyme or reason in how they manage their wait list, and once you're seated, the service is either super rushed or your ignored. Found this spot looking for breakfast leaving Bend. Our foursome was all people who travel for a living and eat out frequently. Everyone agreed this was some of the best breakfast they have had. The food at Chow is often great... particularly on weekdays when the kitchen isn't slammed. The amount of people in the restaurant and the quality of food definitely correlate; fewer people, better food. The staff seem to be touch and go. At times they are friendly and helpful, other times they seem annoyed that you are patronizing their restaurant. I cannot give Chow a positive or even lukewarm review, however, because they choose to refuse service to people by not providing wheelchair access. Recently I was in a terrible accident and sustained several broken bones. One day post-accident my friend thought eating at CHOW would be a great way to cheer me up. We called when we arrived outside the restaurant because we couldn't find the wheelchair ramp. We couldn't find it because it does not exist. They told us they do not have a ramp but could make it work... really? With two broken ankles, two broken knees, and two broken arms you are going to make it work? Make it work by building a wheelchair ramp. Make it work by making your restrooms wheelchair accessible. Make it work by providing at least one handicap parking spot. Read the Americans with Disabilities Act and start on renovations because treating people with disabilities as second class citizens is shameful and simply wrong. If you are interested in supporting a local business that provides great food, excellent service and does not blatantly discriminate, McKay's Cottage is a much better choice. read more

I so want to love this place, but . . . The food is 5-star. The service is between 2 and 3 stars. I'm giving a total rating of 4 stars because I really like the philosophy, the building, and the food, but a little less of that could easily have resulted in a 3-star rating. The service is just . . . odd. I ate there on two consecutive mornings. On the first, I sat at a table next to a woman and her young son, who had obviously been there for a little while, because the boy had a glass of orange juice. The server showed up, took my order, and was about to leave, when the woman asked if he would take her order too. She'd been there longer than I, but I was taken care of first. The second morning, I had Person #1 show me to my table, Person #2 pour my glass of water, Person #3 take my order, Person#4 bring my coffee, Person #1 bring my meal, Person #5 bring the spoon I'd asked Person #1 for, Person #1 bring me a second spoon, Persons #4 and #6 refill my coffee and water as the meal progressed, and finally Person #3 come back to bring the check. Between my order and the check, nobody asked me how the food was, if I needed anything, how I was doing, all the usual stuff. My strong impression is that the employees just float around, taking care of whatever they happen to notice. If everybody's responsible for everything, that usually results in nobody being responsible for anything. The job gets done, but not very elegantly. I don't expect servers to kiss my feet, but at CHOW I never felt that any individual was really focused on me as a customer. And why wasn't a spoon brought with my coffee? Do Bendites (Bendians? Bendonians? Bendies?) not put sugar in their coffee, or if they do, do they stir it with their forks? Or fingers? Or kayak paddles? I had the corned beef hash with eggs one morning, and the biscuits and gravy plus two eggs the next morning. I have zero quibbles with the food. Fresh, tasty, well-prepared, high-quality ingredients, and the coffee was excellent. I got the French press one morning, and coffee by the cup the next morning. It was all so good, I feel bad complaining about the service, but there you have it. Admittedly, I breakfasted alone. If I'd been with a group of friends, the socializing probably would have obscured the service issues, and I would have given CHOW the maximum 5 stars overall. read more

Very busy restaurant, there's almost always a wait, BUT the wait is painless as they've got a nice lawn area or bar to wait in. We enjoy sitting in the chairs on the lawn, relaxing, chatting, just taking it all in. In the Winter there's a fire pit! Who doesn't love a fire pit?? The menu changes seasonally & the ingredients are high quality and locally sourced as often as possible. We've been to Chow many times & look forward to going back as most everything on the menu is wonderful... that being said... we've ordered the French Toast twice and the Monte Cristo once and their French Toast & Monte Cristo both leave a LOT to be desired. NOT worth ordering French Toast or Monte Cristo here. The French Toast is dry on the inside... the custard does not penetrate the thick slices of homemade bread (yes, I said homemade... that's cool). They may as well give you toast with syrup & toppings on the side because the flavor comes 100% from the syrup & toppings NOT in the French Toast itself. Surprising. And soo disappointing. The Monte Cristo - same problem, they are using the same thick sliced homemade bread they use for French Toast, it didn't even look like the entire sandwich was dipped, just one side of each slice of bread. Forget that! BUT... don't let the horrible French Toast & super boring Monte Cristo (and soggy sweet potato fries) stop you from heading to Chow because, as I said before, most everything on the menu is WONDERFUL!! read more

Chow's ambiance is charmingly eclectic with great funky artwork decorating the indoor and outdoor space, friendly staff, and optional outdoor or indoor seating. The menu strives for local sustainable cuisine with some innovative fresh mash-ups. I tried the Ala Med described as crispy jalapeño cheddar polenta, spinach, poached eggs, with a roasted pepper and kalamata hollandaise sauce. The presentation was lovely, but at $12.5 the amount was small and would have left me hungry if not for the added side for an additional dollar, of fried cauliflower dressed with lemon juice, chile, cumin and creme fraiche. I had the Ala Med with the hollandaise sauce on the side. Without the sauce the individual components were somewhat bland and the textures didn't play off of each other in a complementary fashion. I added salt and the sauce to add some flavor to the dish and while this helped, I would not order this again. The cauliflower on the other hand was a tasty explosion of flavor that had me ordering another side to go. My dining companion had one of the daily specials, the Locavore, which was comprised of an omelet with local chicken apple sausage, asparagus, spinach, cherry tomatoes, Brie cheese, basil pesto accompanied by country potatoes and a side order of bacon. That dish scored solid points as being hearty and delicious. Our coffee cups were kept full throughout the meal. Overall a peasant experience. Honestly, I resisted. The Victorian is one of my favorite restaurants in the state; I don't go to Bend without finding time to dedicate myself to a brunch of their crab Benedict. Unfortunately, our time was limited and the wait at the Victorian endless, so Chow we we went. Summary: My crab cake Benedict (called something different on the menu) blew my mind. The Hollandaise was more herby than I'm used too, adding depth to an already amazing dish. I split the french toast (pumpkin, I think) and could have eaten both in their entirety (due to gluttony, not sparse portions.) My husband ordered the special, a pulled-pork tortas breakfast dish of sorts. The shredded meat was beyond tender and was perfectly balanced by the queso, beans and avocado. The service was friendly, efficient and accommodating despite the full house. I'm not saying I'm abandoning my love for the Victorian.....I do think that it is fair to say that we are no longer going steady, and that our morning liaisons may now be menage-a-trois. read more

We ended up here after walking out of two other places because they used frozen chicken fried steak. Called this place and the girl said that there's was fresh and hand breaded. That phone call was the best part of the whole meal. The staff is very friendly and funny. This is a very small place and would not work well for a large group unless the weather is nice and you can sit outside. They serve a more eclectic menu that some won't like. I like menus of this type but not when I am ripped off on the price, and I think this place fits that description. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and it was about 3 oz of meat. It was cooked great and the gravy was great but then they wanted to be goofy and added Blue Cheese to it, not a great combo. My fried potatoes were ice cold and old. These had to have been cooked hours earlier and held over. My eggs were also cold. Odd thing is the steak was hot, which means they put the eggs and spuds up way before the steak was done. My wife had the Blackstone (Poached eggs, Corn Crusted Tomatoes, Spinach, Bacon, Bearnaise Sauce with Grits). This whole meal was piping hot and she liked it. Overall this meal will fill a woman or maybe a Metrosexual but not even close for someone who is really hungry and would like a big tasty Sunday breakfast. We stopped at Chow yesterday after I stumbled upon the blurb for the restaurant while searching for a quick place to eat. We were so happy to find good food made from scratch with locally-sourced ingredients. The food was delicious. SO many choices! I had the Happy Hippy sandwich with Chow's own fresh bread, olive tapenade and cheese, filled with pickled roasted vegetables. It was even better than the description made it sound. The homemade cheese had the texture of a firmer tofu and the vegetables were perfect. I hate to admit it but I also had the sweet potato fries with bleu cheese crumbles. Writing this now makes me want to drive to Bend just for more fries. In addition to the wonderful food, Chow has an enticing shaded patio under tall pine trees as well as a homey comfortable dining room with nicely worn wood floors and a mantle decorated with lots of sunflowers from their outside garden. We were allowed to sit on the patio with our well-behaved dogs who were oohed and ahhed over to their hearts' content. Chow is easy to find, easy on the wallet, boasts a professional and cheerful staff and the best food I've ever eaten in Bend. We are locavores and will happily support this great restaurant. I am only sorry it is two hours away from home or I would eat there much more often. As it is, I will eat there every chance I get. read more

Ouch, that $45 price tag on a two person breakfast stings. $10 for a mason jar sized bloody mary? We didn't even pay that for a bloody mary on the mountain. They do label themselves as a sustainable restaurant so I understand why they price everything so high, I just don't think it's really necessary (slash worth it). I mean, I did see the V8 bottle that their bloody mary "mix" came from... I really wanted to like this restaurant, our waiter was very funny, nice, helpful, and definitely made our breakfast something fun. The menu is very creative, and intriguing and sounded extremely tasty but I think they stretch themselves a little too thin with all the variations on their hollandaise and béarnaise sauces. I ordered the caesar (not a salad, just a variation on eggs benedict) and thought there were definitely too many sauces on that plate fighting for attention. At the end, the roja sauce beat all of the other sauces into submission, and unfortunately for me tomato based sauces aren't my favorite, I'll take a lemony hollandaise sauce all day every day. My poached eggs were also almost cooked all the way through which is a bummer... The great service, and edible enough food make this a solid 3 stars for me. Glad I tried out this restaurant finally, but I probably won't be back. read more

I haven't made it in for breakfast or brunch, but judging by the food they cooked for us that night, it must be amazing. This is one of the rare times I gotta disagree with most people and their yelp reviews. We went here yesterday (Monday) on a recomendation from a local. The place was busy but there was no line and they said they would get us a place right away. 15 min or so later we were finally seated. Our waitress was very strange she did things that were just a little off like gazing out to the street while asking us questions and asking us the strangest things. The coffee was good and the food was so so....a bit on the bland side for me. They do make their own hot sauces though....which also were pretty much on the bland side as well. Don't really think I'd need to go back here. Or if I did it would be just for coffee but I dont need to wait 15 min for coffee. read more

Flew in from Chicago and headed to Chow based on multiple favorable recommendations. The positive buzz about Chow is spot on. Chow is a restaurant that truly "gets it." In order to get the best flavor you must start with the best ingredients. And the best ingredients are grown locally. Chow goes out of there way to support local farmers and suppliers. And the result is simply delicious food. Add to that a staff that goes out of there way to make you feel welcome. read more
