The house made breakfast cocktails looked amazing even though I didn't try them. The only reason this great spot received 4/5 stars was because service was a little slow. We were seated and it took about 10 minutes to be offered a beverage. Despite that, the waitress was pleasant, friendly, adorable, funny and on it once she had the time to get around to us. Now, the food was DELICIOUS. There aren't huge portions here, but the quality is worth the trip. The Huevos Rancheros was gorgeous in presentation. I had the biscuit and gravy. CHOW continues to be my local favorite for breakfast. The food is always exceptional, creative, and local. Their carrot habanero sauce is amazing! We loved this restaurant! Visited here the last morning of our week vacation in Bend. Wanted a great breakfast before taking the long drive home; we got that and more. We were seated immediately at 7:30AM (thank you Yelpers for that tip). The cook staff is very professional, table service was excellent, and the manager (?) very attentive to everyone's experience. There's a lot of dog friendly outdoor seating with lots of shade. My wife had pancakes and coffee, I had The Blackstone with a jalapeno infused Bloody Mary. Loved it all!!! Pancakes were fluffy and the syrup delicious. I highly recommend The Blackstone for the tasty tomatoes, excellent bacon, organic poached eggs and delicious sauce. Okay so Dog Chow may be a little harsh I'll let you decide for yourself. My thoughts are when you pay good money to have someone prepare a meal for you all of it should be edible. I had the Vinny and while it tasted good everything on the plate was cold. My daughter had the buttermilk pancake and it was probably the best thing we were served. My wife on the other hand had the country fried steak and it was horrible, I had one bite of it and it basically ruined the rest of my breakfast it was so bad and on top of being bad it to was cold as where the potatoes. The waitress was working hard and we overheard some of her heated conversations with kitchen so it didn't sound like this was an unusual event. read more

Service is TERRIBLE!!!! Waited nearly an hour to get seated, and been waiting at the table for 10 minutes with no server in sight. I would give it 1 star but it's a pleasant place to hang out and there is live music. If you come, bring a snack to tide you over because you will be waiting a LONG time to get anything to eat. For the positive: My food was delicious! I got the huevos rancheros topped with pulled pork and side of bacon cheddar grits and it did not disappoint! As mentioned in previous reviews, they poach their eggs perfectly. The grits were a good consistency with great flavor. I had to stop myself from finishing the entire meal bc it wouldn't have gone well with my hike. Something else that doesn't go well with a hike is alcohol!! And they don't skimp on it! I think the large mason jar that housed my mimosa had about 2oz of juice and 3 glasses of champagneNormally I wouldn't have an issue with this but as my only day in Bend I had things to do so I couldn't finish it. This isn't a complaint, just something you might find useful if you plan to be productive after eating here. Many people seemed happy with their cocktails and the bartender touted his creation of the princess greyhound-I didn't try it but everyone liked it that I could tell. Also the bartender seemed to really love his job and his energy was entertaining and contagious. Now the negative. I had breakfast here yesterday on Friday morning at 10am and as a party of one I thought I'd be able to sit at the bar quickly for a first come first serve seat. The hostess said I had to be put on the wait list even to sit at the bar even though there were 5 open chairs. She estimated 10-15 minutes to get seated in the bar so I waited outside with everyone else. 30+ minutes later I noticed that 2 women sat in bar area as soon as they arrived-I thought they were just waiting there but then food came out 10 minutes later (fast by the way). I went inside to ask the bartender about seating and he said I could sit there and it is first come first serve. Not sure why there is a disconnect there but it was frustrating as it had now been ~45 minutes. I expected to wait based on reviews but it's almost more difficult when you get such an inaccurate quote of wait times (45+ in reality, quoted 10-15 minutes). Overall I would definitely go back bc the food and drinks are wonderful, the wait is the only real downside. Enjoy! read more

If you are in Bend and looking for a very "Portland" breakfast I highly suggest you check out Chow. Full of healthy looking families clad in REI's finest, if you are sun kissed and outdoorsy you'll love this joint. They place heavy emphasis on local ingredients, have great house coffee and a mid level price point. We were guided here by yelp and even at 8:30am on a Sunday you are looking at a wait. They have a beautiful patio area which we were unable to enjoy due to rain, but the 20 minute wait for a table for two was made more tolerable thanks to the pour your own coffee bar and lots of interesting art pieces in the yard. Chow is quaint, filled to the brim with interesting local art and great for people watching. My husband raved endlessly about his Benedict, my poached eggs on corned beef hash was a little odd. The eggs were perfectly poached and from a local Terrebonne egg farm. The potatoes and corned beef were however smothered in some really odd tomato sauce and shaped like they had been shook from a can. Our waiter was a little strange but all the other staff we encountered were genuine and calm despite the packed and humid house. We got to Chow shortly after 11:30am were quoted a 30 min wait time...waited almost an hour to get seated. Once seated was told someone would be us soon several people walked by our table...a server that seemed to be working our section even walked by a table right next to us to ask them how they were doing, looked at us and walked right by. We walked out. I called to talk to a manager shortly after we left and told him what happened...he said "ya I seated you and watched you walk out." Yes I quoted you a 30 min + wait time". " I wondered why you left as well as the server." "Sorry no one got to you in the time you thought they should." This is the same guy that as I was waiting way over my quote said "please tell me we are off this wait!" Came to the host stand multiple times making comments to the lead hostess! Honestly as a, "manager," was this really happening? This is the same guy that says to me "what can I do?" 1. I've already left, 2. Came here for breakfast on our way through Bend--so glad we did. It was delicious. I had the Huevos Rancheros; two eggs, tortillas, ancho sauce, black beans, green chile sauce, and queso fresco with a side of house potatoes. It was all nice and hot--and wonderful comfort food. The person I was with had The Local (two eggs, sausage, toast, potatoes, and a side of crispy fried tomatoes)--yum. The coffee was good, and they had ample outdoor seating and live music. The only thing I would have liked is a little less attention from the staff (yes, you understood me right)--we had to have been asked at least half a dozen times how our food was and if everything was good...BY four different people! Just assign that to one and leave the client to reach out to you if they need something else (IMHO). It was also pretty entertaining watching waitstaff come close to colliding while they were coming around a blind corner outside. They really need to develop either a better system or purchase a mirror so they can see who's coming. Yum-yum Gimme Some! This is my favorite breakfast joint in town. My favorite regular menu item is the Lime Bacon French Toast with a poached egg and hollandaise sauce; such a tasty, surprise. Very consistent flavors and excellent service. The owner is often seen on the floor serving customers while keeping a low profile. Nice. Always good specials too. My only complaint is that the last time I was there I ordered the standard corned beef hash, which was good but didn't blow my mind like the first time I had it several months ago... maybe that's because I was so splendidly surprised by a classic dish done so well the first I tried it. Truly disappointed...arrived at 8:15a, restaurant opens at 7:00a. Two other tables seated. 5 people on the floor yet we waited 5 minutes to be seated and 10 minutes to order coffee and then server wanted our food order at same time. Did not offer the specials. Coffee cups were majorly chipped around the edges...very dangerous. Food was just ok. They have perfected the cooking of the poached eggs in advance but this results in a cold egg. Along with a huge slice of cold tomato and undercooked bacon and a bernaise sauce that had no taste of tarragon it made for a not so delicious breakfast. The hot sauces were the highlight. You can tell the ingredients are first class but the service and organization is bad. Training a server at the busiest time of breakfast makes no sense. Train on the fringe and train the register off time...have no plan of returning or recommending this restaurant. read more

I was excited to go here mid week in the fall so there wouldn't be a wait. I've lived in Bend for 12 years have eaten here many times before but this time I was truly disappointed. I ordered the rancheros and there was absolutely no flavor, the beans weren't cooked and it was horribly bland. When looking around the restaurant I noticed how dirty it was with dust everywhere from top to bottom with dead plants on the fire place mantle. My silverware was dirty and we could hear the kitchen blasting their death metal while we were trying to enjoy our meal. read more

I'm visiting from out of town and this was my first and last trip to Chow. We expected to wait a bit being that it was Saturday morning. The live music was nice. We were told it would be a 30 minute wait. Ended up waiting 50 minutes. When we finally got seated, there were 5 empty tables. Couldn't figure out why such a long wait. Ordered our food and waited another 35 minutes to get it. It was cold when finally delivered to us. We did not tell our server as we had already been there a long time and had someplace to be. I wish I could say the food was bad, but even though it was cold, it was really tasty. I had the scramble special. When we finally left, 2 hours after our arrival, there were several empty tables and quite a few people waiting to be seated. It was tempting to warn them it would be a long dining experience! I would not recommend this place to anyone that values their time or has children. Too long of a wait! read more

Chow is phenomenal!!! This is our favorite brunch spot, after having sampled near everywhere else in town over the years. (For example, another former favorite, the Victorian Cafe', just can't compare with Chow's originality, freshness, local-consciousness and service.) We can't review many of the dishes, 'cause we're in love with our favorites: Eggs al la Med and the Local. They are both so amazing we just can't stand to deviate...boring as that may sound. For the former: crispy corn cake, poached eggs, spinach sauteed in garlic and lemon, topped with delicious hollandaise sauce and three choices of house-made hot sauces--To Live For!!! And my hubby says that the Local is the Zen of perfect breakfast in its perfectly done simplicity--eggs any way you like, country potatoes, thick and crispy bacon and toast, or either of two types of biscuite (he likes the bacon thyme variation, topped with house-made berry jam). Besides the incredible food, the staff is remarkable. The place was packed today, as usual, with hopeful customers lining up out the front door and blocking both the kitchen and work stations, yet the staff was smiling, patient and maintaining senses of humor. Today we were fortunate enough to chat up the two owners, David and Shawn, both of whom work in the restaurant daily. They were humble, friendly and solicitous of our happiness and food satisfaction. Both even took the time out to talk awhile, despite the busy-ness of the day. The service is really extraordinary at this lovely spot, and that despite the fact that they could just rest on the laurels of the fabulous food. Bend isn't known for its caring and knowledgeable servers, being a vacation town and all. So finding this gem that is delivering premier quality food, ambiance (interesting art, charming home-y environment, healthy plants trailing along the walls), AND exceptional service to its appreciative fans is quite a treat. Woke up very early for instant seating at CHOW and started the day off right with an amazing bloody Mary featuring homemade pickled veggies from their garden. The food was less impressive, and a let down after reading so many amazing reviews. I felt the menu featured too many "alt breakfasts" and I prefer more standard fare so my options seemed limited. I'm sure most of the time Chow has great food and service, but I needed to mention this bad experience. My wife and friend ordered the biscuits and sausage gravy, and I went with the vegetarian gravy with biscuits and two eggs. My "clean" water glass still had the last patron's lip balm on it, so I asked the waitress for a new glass of water. She apologized and said she would be right back with a new one. It didn't come until the food was served, as she forgot. Their sausage gravy looked great--thick, chunky, and smothered on biscuits. The vegetarian gravy, on the other hand, you couldn't even see on the biscuits; it had the consistnecy of half and half with 3 chunks of vegetarian sausage and a few onions. The "biscuits" were ROCK hard; very difficult to cut through with knife and fork. When I moved the eggs, a big black hair was staring back at me. I couldn't eat it. Hungry as I was after the long wait, I just couldn't do it. They did credit the meal, but wow. The waitress apologized and told me that's how their vegetarian gravy comes. If that's true, Chow, do yourselves a favor and remove this terrible dish form the menu. read more
