Basically, this is the place I order chocolates every year for holidays like Valentine's Day, Christmas, and Mother's Day. They are excellent, with flavors ever changing to fit the holiday. For example, at Easter the chocolates are shaped like little eggs. For Father's Day the candies are flavored for dad with hard liquor infused chocolates - LOL! I've never heard a complaint from anyone I've gotten them for. And a couple of times I've even ordered some for myself, since no one ever buys a guy chocolates... boo hoo hoo. I have never actually been to either of their two store fronts (Kansas City and San Francisco). I live in Los Angeles and have had them shipped here and to people in Tennessee and New York City. Christopher Elbow is an old favorite. After years and years of SF Boys Chorus and SF Girls Chorus, I have haunted every Hayes Valley location and then some. Especially during the holidays when rehearsals at Davies Symphony Hall were long and frequent. I already wrote that their liquid chocolate comes in a number of different flavors and it is just over-the-top deliciousness. Their service continues to be top-notch (save for some black Friday craziness, but they get a pass for that). So on this day, a Friday morning with not too many customers, the lovely gal lived up to what I expected in service. There were samples offered to the kids while I was in the restroom (and btw, I'm obsessed with their sink - please check out their bathroom while you're there - in fact I'm going to post a photo) and when I returned they had each almost finished their selections of chocolates. tldr: If you're willing to pay a higher price they have delicious chocolates and hot chocolate! We were walking by and looking for something to do in Hayes Valley and we noticed this shop at the corner of the street. It was a bit cold, so we wanted some hot chocolate to warm us up and oh boy is their hot chocolate delicious! It tastes like it's made from real chocolate - if you like dark chocolate you'll enjoy the hot chocolate here! It's kind of expensive at $5 per cup of hot chocolate but they're absolutely delicious and very rich in cocoa flavor - yet not too sweet or bitter. I was able to try their hazelnut flavor hot chocolate and that was also delicious. They also sell a variety of hollow chocolates aka bonbons that are filled with a creamy inside which depends on what flavor you get. I had the fleur de sel caramel which is caramel infused with grey French sea salt. It is so good, once you bite into it the chocolate pops and it mixes with the creamy insides and it's just so good. Too bad these chocolates are pretty expensive $2.50 per bonbon and the sets don't save you that much money either. read more

We were motioned in by a nice lady behind the counter as we stood drooling at the window! We were on our way to dinner next door, but did go in for a small sample. Based on the sample and the looks of the gorgeous chocolate pieces, I had to go back in after dinner. And I am so glad I did! Beautifully hand painted chocolates. What a lovely little find in the Hayes Valley. I had walked by here before but never thought to drop in untill I ended up after dinner before the symphony on evening. It was cold outside and I wanted a coffee and instead saw the menu display showing the sipping chocolate with was intriguing. Went in and was instantly amazed by the high patisserie nature of all the chocolate selections. The designs and the flavors were really quite exquisite. It's worth a drop in just for that. I really wanted to see if they would hold a candle to some of the best hot chocolate I've ever had and I had a feeling they might match it especially with all the varieties they had on the board. I opted for the Spiced Dark Chocolate with Oatley (oat milk) rather than milk which was served in a lovely cup and saucer. The first sip can be described as a velvety, chocolatey bloom inside my mouth and made its way into me instantly warming my belly with a light, spicy finish that knocked my throat beckoning me to go for the next sip. It was exquisite and delicious and something that should just be savored and appreciated without asking too many waisting it thinking to many thoughts. Go have some it is worth the price. read more

This place is a godsend. We stop in here probably every two weeks for client gifts. The staff are always so friendly and I love that I can be in and out very fast. Parking usually takes longer. They have a unique offering of different truffles and carmels. I just tell whoever is helping me to make the boxes colorful. Our clients are always wowed at how beautiful these chocolates are. Flat out the best customer service EVER. I'll first begin with the actual review and then I'll go on to explain why I'm absolutely giving this place 5+ stars. The chocolate here isn't just for consumption, it's for you to admire what you're eating, and for you to know that a lot of heart and soul went into each individual piece. Each piece of chocolate is unique in its own sense, and will hit almost every tastebud in your mouth. The fleur de self is by far the best tasting piece of chocolate that I have ever had. I bought this set for Mother's Day and drove it from San Francisco to San Jose. Unfortunately, the chocolate melted (from just an hour drive) so that was extremely disappointing. I returned a few days later to show them the photos and no questions asked, they provided me a brand new set and apologized profusely. The apologies weren't necessary, but they went out of their way to do so. They replaced it, but they also provided an ice pack and cold package so that the drive down to San Jose would not cause additional problems to the chocolate. If you are a chocolate fan, you cannot beat Christopher Elbow! Located in Hayes Valley, this place offers a variety of chocolate items including truffles, toffees, and caramels for your enjoyment. When I first walked in, I admired the contrast between the clean, white decor and the colorful chocolates on display. The huge assortment of items can be overwhelming, since it can be hard to know which awesome item to pick first! During my visits, the staff have been helpful and patient in explaining the different flavor varieties. While the truffles are small, they are packed with flavor! I also thought the caramels were delectably filled with nuts and a gooey filling that contrasted well with the salt sprinkled on top. My mouth just exploded. No, really - I just took a bite of chocolate that had pop rocks in it. Pop rocks!! Now, that's some fun chocolate. Christopher Elbow is the newest purveyor of handmade, artisinal chocolates to grace our city of chocolate-lovers. In the space formerly known as "Friend", the modern aesthetic has been preserved and freshly appointed in deep red, bright white, and, of course, dark chocolate brown. I don't know if it's because of the company's Midwestern roots, but the environment feels very laid-back and grounded, which is not always the case in similar high-end stores. The corner location works well for the set up of a pristine chocolate counter, with an ever-so-clean display of the chocolates. It's extremely easy to shop, whether you just want a few morsels or a gift box. There is also a wall filled with chocolate bars and other products like pate de fruit. The flavors are interesting and tempting, from the comforting (bananas foster) to the exotic (strawberry balsamic caramel). Someone in the kitchen definitely has an appreciate for alcohol (someone after my own heart, clearly), as there are confections which contain everything from wine to scotch to absinthe. Colors and shapes are artistic and interesting - I especially liked the jewel tones of the lavender caramel and absinthe chocolates. If you like fleur de sel, you can find it on turtles and in caramels. They also offer drinkable chocolate, in an impressive variety of flavors. And one thing that really sets them apart from other chocolatiers is that they have a chocolate lounge - so that you can take a seat, flip through a magazine, and sip or eat your chocolate in a relaxed environment. I indulged in a cup of hot chocolate with passion fruit - so rich, so creamy with just a hint of passion fruit flavor - it was silky and delicious, and if I had to make any improvement, I would add more passion fruit for an even stronger bite. Each of the chocolates I have tried so far has been delicious - Fresh Lime, Strawberry Balsamic Caramel, and Macadamia (I think) with Pop Rocks. I love their tiny size and concentration of flavors. In terms of flavor Chocolatier Blue of Berkeley still reigns supreme, and while the chocolates at Christopher Elbow Chocolates in San Francisco are attractive and beautiful to look at the flavored centers and the chocolate shells just didn't have the explosive taste or the fine texture of my favorite chocolates in the East Bay. As I'm certain is the case with most chocolatiers which offer a vast selection there will always be hits and misses, and I definitely had some favorites among the Christopher Elbow candies I tried, but in the end I kept wishing the outer layers of their candies were smoother and creamier. I feel like I'm on cloud 9 whenever I'm eating CE chocolates. Once I have tasted CE chocolates, I never want to have any other chocolates again. Yup the bar has been raised. Each piece of chocolate is like a piece of artwork and they tasted yummilicious!!! The dark chocolate shell has the right firmness with the perfect sweet bitter taste. Tiny masterpieces. Sadly, Christopher Elbow opened this shop long before I had the pleasure. A good friend of mine lives right across the street, so for a long time, I'd walk by & just look & lust. Once I finally decided to turn that lust into reality, a few characteristics about myself were reaffirmed... I love bananas foster, so I have to have it. I'll never skip an earl grey. I'm always compelled to order lavender. And the girly girl in me has to order the champagne. But, my favorite so far is easily the strawberry balsamic. A box of these babies is a real statement. They're like jewels in the night. Precious & striking, & I'm not used to using such words to describe chocolates. Honorable mention goes to the Venezuelan spice, & the whiskey. The most beautiful chocolates I've ever seen...truly a piece of art!!! So much so that you just couldn't bring yourself to eat them! They were absolutely delicious as well. We got the pre-made assorted box to take as a housewarming gift to a friend, price was definitely very expensive for chocolates, but these are not just regular chocolates. Chocolate Truffle-licious Orgasmica anyone? *Raises Hand* ME, ME, ME!!! No words can describe how intricately designed and sinfully decadent Christopher Elbow Artisanal Chocolates (CEAC) are. These designer chocolates are so effen good that it will make every one of your senses tingle. I've passed by CEAC many times while having lunch in Hayes Valley and it wasn't until yesterday did I finally pay a visit. Upon entering, my eyes were fixated at the glass cases filled with miniature pieces of chocolate art and my head became discombobulated on what to choose. I opted to get a 9-piece box and choose the following: *Champagne: An alcoholic's delight; rich and smooth w/ a velvety ganache center and a prominent Champagne flavor. *Fleur De Sel: OMG--YUM! When you bite into it, the caramel flows like hot lava on to your tongue and melts into your taste buds. The sea salt highlights the caramel flavor and leaves an ever so light salt flavor on your palette. *Hazelnut: Heavenly! The hazelnut ganache is velvety smooth w/ hazelnut tibits for a slight crunch. Sorry, Ferrero Rocher, CEAC has you beat! *Cappuccino: A dessert perfectly matched for a coffee addict. The cappuccino chocolate has a light, airy, and smooth ganache center w/ a strong espresso bite to it. *Wildflower Honey: OMG, how is it possible that something can change flavors? Upon biting into the Wildflower Honey, you can taste the strong honey smell and as it melts in your mouth, the "honey" transforms to a creamy sweet caramel taste. DELISH! *Ghana: For dark chocolate fans; the Ghana is rich, velvety, w/ a slightly bitter after taste. *Macadamia Praline: YUMMY! The caramelized macadamia nuts are blended w/ silky chocolate ganache for a perfect blend of sweet, nutty, and buttery taste. *Venezuelan Spice: MUY CALIENTE! At first, the Venezuelan Spice taste like the regular CEAC ganache; rich and velvety, however as it melts away you can feel the spice catch up to you as it leaves a fiery kick on your palette. *Dulce De Leche: Creamy, milky, and sweet. If you like flan or are a Vietnamese ice coffee fan, you will like the Dulce De Leche as has a taste very similar to condensed milk. Although CEAC has about 25 different flavors to choose from, each with its own unique flavor profile and taste, the quality for each is very consistent. Whether the star ingredient is champagne, honey, chili, or a nut, its taste is prominent and shines through the velvety sweetness of the chocolate ganache w/o overpowering it. CE definitely did a superb job of matching chocolate with different ingredients that work in harmony with one another. The chocolates are beautifully boxed and a picture brochure is included so you can differentiate one chocolate from another. CEAC are a bit pricey at about $2/piece, but are worth every penny considering the quality and care it took to make these exquisite culinary miniature delights. We all know all the money in the world can't solve our problems, but chocolate can (well, at least in my book it can). So, if you're in the doghouse, do yourself a favor and pick up a box of CEAC for your significant other b/c nothing says "I Love You" more than a mouthful of cavities.
