This is a small shop with a big variety. I tried a mix of flavors like almond liqueur, peanut butter, chipotle chile pepper, espresso chocolate, and coconut, and everything was so good. Compared to other chocolate shops their pricing is just right for quality chocolates. You can choose which ones you want and they have a wide variety of choices including even ones with liquor. I personally like their hazelnut and peanut butter one. Chocolates are sold in batches of a dozen, 20, 40, and 80 truffles and more. Besides chocolate and ice cream they also have coffees, hot chocolate and Italian sodas. The guy behind the counter was really nice and gave us a sample as well. We go to Five Star Truffles and get their Five Star hot chocolate. It's incredibly rich! I get the milk chocolate and I am pleasantly surprised by the cream. There is a reason this is our favorite hot chocolate place in the city. It's a bit cold this summer (insert obligatory Mark Twain quote here). The barista is friendly and we get our chocolate quite quickly. At this point we reach our sugar limit on the food crawl. It's that time of year where I do my annual hot cocoa crawl :) and this place is on my top five for theirs. You also get a free truffle of your choice with the drink. Call me old-fashioned but I like my hot cocoa made with whole milk rather than water. So yummy, did not disappoint. Highly recommend if you like trying different types of hot cocoa. It's such a small shop that you might miss it if you are not actively looking for delicious truffles. I got their strawberry truffles and they tasted like real strawberries! You buy them in take-out containers, and they come out to only about $1 each, depending on the quantity that you buy. I also got a hot chocolate, which was very nice too. This cute shop is a hole in the wall just off Castro street! We got the hot chocolate & it came with a truffle, which was nice! We chose the dark chocolate truffle which was delicious - very soft, creamy and addicting! I found the hot chocolate okay - it was a bit too sweet for me (I'm more of a dark chocolate fan, so I'd prefer other spots). I would definitely come back for the truffles! This review is for the iced chocolate milk only. Service was good. Prices are reasonable. I found the iced chocolate drink to be very powdery. I actually felt like i had something stuck in my throat while drinking it. Also i didn't not find it to be chocolatey enough. I would definitely go with dandelion next time. Five stars is right! We dropped in because my daughter wanted a coffee but when I saw the truffles I HAD to get some. I must say, they were the best dang truffles I have had. The Raspberry were particularly delicious. We did get a large box and chose multiple different flavors which all went in the same box. Honestly, since they all look exactly alike, I recommend seeing if they can put them in separate smaller boxes or something. Grabbing one to eat was always a surprise flavor. BIPOC-owned homemade truffle spot in the Castro - I was on the hunt for gorgeous chocolates for my adopted mom here in San Francisco and decided to give Five Star Truffles a visit. I was greeted with a smile by Santo when I arrived and was impressed by the variety of Truffles. I ended up going with a variety of the non-liquor kind and got a Grand Marnier one for me for the road. Firs the things I like. They have a nice selection of truffles, they are reasonably priced (actually, pretty cheap for truffles), and the person who helped us was very nice. But as far as the truffles, they were just okay. "Three Star Truffle Co" would be a better name IMHO. The flavor of the chocolate was too mild for me (I prefer darker chocolates), and the truffle I tasted that was flavored (bourbon) was way too mild--and I like my chocolates lightly flavored (if at all). But people look for different things when it comes to chocolate, so this is worth a stop if you have a hankering. read more

A cute corner store near the heart of Castro! I got an iced latte but also got a free chocolate thrown in. Chocolate was a 9/10, not too sweet and good texture, almost melts in your mouth but not gooey. The coffee was okay, not the best but good if you need a pick-me-up. I ordered here from online here earlier today. The process was extremely smooth. I ordered 16 hazelnut, 8 black and white, 8 caramel, and 8 dark chocolate. It was 36 dollars for the 40 truffles, which comes out to 90 cents each truffle. What a steal! There was a confirmation email sent to my email, and the order was fulfilled through GrubHub for delivery. It was an estimated 30-40 minutes for delivery, which was extremely accurate. That's faster than if I were to go out to their store, find parking, go inside and order, then go home! I indicated on the delivery notes, that I wouldn't be home and to just drop off the delivery on the porch. A text message was sent to me indicating that the delivery was dropped off. That gave me a sense of reassurance. When I got home, I opened up the packaging, to see the different flavors were put in separate bags and labeled. I put them onto a little tray for the guests when they arrived. The dark chocolate and hazelnut pieces were distinguishable because the nuts used for dark chocolate had a more toasted look. However, I couldn't tell the difference between the black and white pieces with the caramel pieces. Both of those flavors were coated with cocoa powder on the outside. Not a big deal since my guests have no allergies to anything. The only downside are that you can tell these truffles are definitely handmade. Normally, that would be a good thing! But these were a little on the not pretty side as they were rolled in non-uniform circles. It seemed like they didn't put that much effort in making them look pretty. They still tasted delicious. I would definitely come back here in person when I have more time. read more

Considering how much we enjoy strolling the Castro, Jamie W. and I rarely find ourselves walking on 18th Street west of Castro Street. No particular reason. Just discovered this hidden gem in my neighborhood. Got the smallest box with 10 truffles and a hot chocolate which comes with a free truffle. The hot chocolate was yummy and nice for the cold SF day. For my free truffle I got the dark chocolate which they said is a best seller. For the flavors in the box I got peanut butter, caramel sea salt and hazelnut. All were delicious, though I think my favorite one was the caramel. Will definitely be back! read more

From the outside, Five Star does not look as good as XOX, but when I saw the Truffles in the white bowls, I had to ask the owner why it looked so much like XOX Truffles. It turns out that he made truffles at XOX for 7 years before opening his own store (with partners) in fall of 2006 at this Divisadero location. NO WONDER THESE TRUFFLES LOOK AND TASTE JUST LIKE ONES AT XOX!!! I gave XOX 4 Stars - 5 Stars for taste, but minus one star for their price. I got the Five Star hot chocolate and hazelnut liquor truffle! The hot chocolate was decent but honestly, not much home to write about. Definitely better than a Swiss Miss but, for the price, not proportionately in the range of a Dandelion chocolate. The hazelnut liquor truffle was pretty damn good for just a dollar, though!! This is just down the street from my apartment, and the question I keep asking myself is 'Why haven't I discovered this sooner!?' By far, this is a hidden treasure on Divisadero. It's never super crowded when I'm there, but know there are many fans of Five Star. Not only do they have wonderful truffles, but the coffee and hot chocolate are stellar. The owner, (who is always making the truffles when I'm there) is always super friendly and helpful, and offers free samples. Great variety of truffles, but my favorites are the caramel, Earl Grey, and Kahlua. These lil' bites of heaven are so decadent, but worth every single bite. There's a nifty trick here - if you order a specialty drink, they give you a free truffle. This really rules. The prices are inexpensive, especially if you go in for a drink and a little bag of treats. These are handmade truffles, displayed attractively in large mixing bowls, and I dare you to keep from thinking about how badly you want to just bring one of those bowls home and put your face in it. No? That's only me? Dang. I love the fruit-flavor-infused truffles like orange, lemon, and raspberry. But let's not even pretend that the Earl Grey truffles aren't the bomb - mmmmm, bergamot goodness. They're each very tiny, like the size of a little fresh mozzarella ball, and most are dusted with cocoa powder. Their small size has let me blaze a trail through more truffle varieties than I ever could with regular-sized chocolates at other specialty sweet shops. Helpful tip: their receipt reads "Start Truffles," so if you try to find the place again via their name, like I did, you will be woefully disappointed! It's Five Star Truffles. I don't know why the receipt prints this different name. A truffle by any other name still tastes as sweet, though, so go here and nom your little heart out. read more
