Great experience with McKenna. I have long fine straight Asian hair that was almost all one length and volume was overwhelming me because I'm short. I also got bored and tried to chop at it so she had to help me fix that, lol. Asked my stylist for some short face framing layers and layers for movement throughout my hair - without sacrificing the length. She totally delivered with ease. My hair looks so healthy with the trim, feels lighter, and I don't FEEL like it's any shorter. I also love that McKenna didn't curl my hair after cutting it. Overall, the services are pretty great and the staff is very friendly. I just had the price changed on me twice so it's just not really settling right with me. It's probably just me because my hair is thick. I understand I have very thick hair and I told them this before I even came in and met them and I told them that usually I need two people to blow dry my hair, etc. I was quoted a lower price over the phone than it was in person which I was fine with because I just assumed that they didn't really realize how thick my hair was until they met me. However, now I came another time and the price was changed again. I just can't keep coming back and having prices changed on me. I don't really think it's fair and there's no itemized receipt to really assess why you're being charged what you're charged. Over the phone I was quoted a price that was $70 lower than what I was initially charged in my first appointment and then this further went up about $50 or so for the third appointment I got the same treatment both times I think that they do pretty well, probably with people who have normal hair, but I'm still on the lookout for a salon that handles thicker hair. I'm not trying to bother people and it seems my hair is too much for salon Nice on the phone to me and said sorry. But I may have to do my own hair going forwards. read more

[Asian Hate Crime Salon]I don't want to leave a bad review, but I had such a terrible experience that I feel I must share it. I made an appointment, received confirmation, and took PTO from work on Friday for this appointment . However, when I arrived, they had no record of my appointment, and none of the stylists were available to see me when it was time for my appointment. Keeping appointments is a basic expectation in customer service, yet their only response was that they had no record of my booking, with no sense of responsibility. I ended up going to another salon, and in hindsight, I'm glad I did. If they can't even handle a simple booking, it's likely they wouldn't take responsibility if they messed up my hair. The salon is in a great location and looks nice, but I couldn't help but wonder if I was being discriminated against because of my Asian name. Let me start by saying that Marika is sweet and nice, but the results after my perm look VERBATIM my hair before I entered the studio. I asked for SUPER CURLY HAIR such as Shakira and Sandy from Grease during the last scene. I showed her tons of photos. She said "yeah yeah, I get it." I noticed she used big rollers. I get a curl perm every year, but I wanted to try Christopher Perry for the great reviews. My last stylist did loose curls, so I told Marika, loose curls don't last. I wanted TIGHT SPIRALY CURLS. My hair was NOT curly after. I'm giving this review a week later because I wanted to give it a chance. Guess what? My hair looks EVEN STRAIGHTER THAN BEFORE. In fact, my friends are looking at me telling me my hair looks STRAIGHTER than before! After my perm, I asked Marika, "Hey, usually I see curls after a perm. I don't see any curls." She told me they'd come soon. I felt like she's a more beginner stylist. NOPE. My hair is not curly, and this was the most expensive curl perm I've ever paid in my life. I usually pay $120-$140 for all my past salons. This was at least a $185 charge which I gave with a small tip because I already sensed I wasn't going to get curls. $200 down the drain! I live in San Diego now, and I drove up just so that I could ask Perry to revive my hairstyle and make me cute again after years of growing it out (I had 6 inches of grey in my medium length highlighted blond hair). It looks fantastic with some scattered highlights that don't undo my years of allowing the "silver" to come in, and the cut is a bit edgy and so easy to care for. Yesterday I got compliments from two young women in their teens, and caught a table of women my age (50s) checking out my cute cut at lunch. I'd never leave a negative review but I think this time I have to. I was able to book an appointment in this salon while others were fully booked the week before 4th of July. That's nice I guess! Also, the haircut was pretty (my hair is very straight and nothing complicated) But I would never return for any color services . My hair was/is faded blue (my original hair is dark brown). And I had no idea that removing faded blue or any semi permanent colors needs a whole different process. Because why would I know that? That's not my job! That's something that a hair stylist must know and let her clients know IN ADVANCE. I showed a picture of an ash gray balayage to my hair stylist and she said okay. Next, she bleached the roots, washed my hair, and then told me the blue color was not coming off completely. To be fair, she reluctantly said she could bleach it again or try another color, so after 2 hours I was tired and asked if we could try a darker shade, like dark gray. And she said okay. Now (6 hours later) my hair is still blue, even more! And my roots are YELLOW (at least they were supposed to be gray or whatever, because they didn't have blue color on them) After I returned home, I did a google search and I realized to remove this color, one must use a "color remover" first and browning out the hair with the opposite color such as copper color in this case, BEFORE applying any new color or even bleaching the hair. But this is not something that I should've known. In my opinion, this is a basic knowledge that a hair stylist professional should know. I am very very disappointed. Edit: I forgot to add that hair clips she was using fell off on the floor AT LEAST 3 times and she use them on my hair again without any sanitizing. Sigh... I just want to put this out there and say that I really dislike leaving not so great reviews.. but in some cases it's just necessary to do so. It's disappointing but unfortunately I have to be honest and will proceed to do so. I've only been to this salon once myself, I came to get my hair straightened for graduation.. which was about 2 years back, you're probably wondering why I didn't decide to put a review until now.. and it's because once again, I'm not fond of leaving not so great reviews regardless of service. To start off, the girl at the front desk at the time didn't posses the correct customer service skills, and gave inaccurate information, she told me to straighten my hair it would cost around $45-$50 dollars, and when I ended up leaving the total was $95... there was no warning or anything like that, I never question prices that stylists want to charge because if that's what they think is the fair amount, then so be it. I just wish there was transparency at the time. Although the stylist at the time was friendly and skilled.. my experience with him was good, and I did leave him a $5 tip, although I wish I could have done more.. I couldn't due to the huge jump in pricing. There were multiple red flags but I still decided to return to this salon, not for me.. but for my mother. My mother wanted to get her hair dyed after a long time, I wanted to bring her here because I felt as if someone at this salon would be skilled enough to do what she wanted, and in a timely manner. After coming to this salon after 2 or so years, the energy was still the same.. although different workers.. front staff was alright, one of the girls was nice, the other woman not so much. They did get her in for a consult, but they ended up calling my mother to reschedule for another day, which was fine the first time.. she understood things to could happen. Then the second time they called her to reschedule the timing, which in my opinion threw me off because if you know you can't attend at a certain time that's fine, but to let the customer know on short notice isn't the most professional. Keep in mind this was only for the test strand, which my mother was told that it was complimentary, in reality it wasn't and she walked out paying $50 for just a test strand.. it didn't take her more then 25-30 minutes to do.. the front desk person even asked my mother to tip.. tip for what? the full service hadn't even been done.. my mother tipped $5 out of curtsy, which in total brought it to $50.. but the money isn't even the point, it's the fact that they didn't let her know about this before hand, it's dishonest and unprofessional. She was supposed to have her appointment today and they called her to cancel AGAIN. This pattern had been happening repeatedly, my mother started getting suspicious as to whether or not they even wanted to perform the service for her. I understand things can happen, and she does too. Although it doesn't seem like they value people's time, because if they did.. they wouldn't have done all of this in the first place. There was an altercation between my mother and the front store clerk, as well as the stylist that was supposed to do her hair.. my mother was expressing her concerns and how she felt, she felt as if there may have been discrimination that was occurring, although I can't confirm this.. I certainly hope that's not the case.. because if it is, then maybe running a public business isn't ideal if you only want a certain demographic of customers. I think professionalism is important and if you can't be that way with your customers, especially new ones.. then some serious reevaluation should be done. The atmosphere and vibe in there isn't horrible but it's also not the best either, it didn't feel extremely welcoming and that's unfortunate. I can't even believe I am writing this review but it wouldn't be good on my part if I didn't say something. It's certainly a learning experience and it's safe to say I won't be returning and neither will my mother, especially after they told us to not return.. even though everything that's occurred has been their fault.. not ours. First and last time I'll ever step into this salon again! A few months ago I made an appointment to get my hair dyed and styled. I never got a call to confirm my appointment, I had scheduled it a month prior, when I got there the hairdresser I had specifically asked for didn't even know I was coming in to get styled by her, which explains the call I never received to confirm the appointment. The guy at the reception desk, who obviously could careless about me, insisted I go with Kelly even though I NEVER asked for her, I didn't even know who she was. He vouched for her saying she had so much experience and a bunch of other shit. (I should've read the yelp reviews ‍) I felt forced to get my hair done with her because at that point Katie didn't have room for me, once more I scheduled this a month prior since that was the earliest she could take me in. Kelly could careless about what she did to me and what I asked for. I completely understand that there is a process when it comes to lightening your hair, but what I got was HORRENDOUS!! She started by bleaching my roots to just dye them their original color! My scalp was on fire and she wasn't around she had walked away for well over 15 minutes at a time! I ended up with burns on my scalp! If I wanted a hack job I could've done that at home for much cheaper! I was in so much distress my sister called them for me and they had the audacity to tell me I had to pay AGAIN for their mistake, which they never wanted to admit to! That would've been another 200+ to fix what the hairdresser fucked up what the receptionist fucked up because they never bothered to put me on Katie's schedule! Not only that when they called to confirm my appointment with Katey they called my sister and not me! Overall stay away from Kelly she is the worst. And please if a customer is specifically requesting someone let them be seen by that someone! I was the one paying I should've been able to get who I was PAYING to get my hair done from! And no one admitted that Kelly messed me up bad! They just kept saying that that was the process but why should I have had to have terrible hair to get a certain color? Makes no sense. I've been going to Mckenzie Avon for I think a year now which is really rare for me to stay with one stylist. I've been in the area for 5 years and she has been the only one to check all my boxes. She listens to what I want but asks more questions to get a better understanding. She recommends things that would look good on me and after trusting her a few times I now let her do whatever since she knows my style. I get highlights and a different cut everytime and I've never had an issue. I LOVE her scalp massages at the bowl hehe :) She gives me the prettiest blowout at the end or curls if I ask! She is also very easy to talk to and conversation flows so naturally, im comfortable, it's like we are family. There have been a few times where I've had to work or be on calls during our time and she is super respectful and patient about it. The salon is clean, there is always someone sweeping, dusting, wiping mirrors or refilling bottles and the volume of music and/or talking has never bothered me (they have some great playlists however). Let me start by saying, the stylist was an incredibly nice and friendly person and I definitely enjoyed my experience talking with her. Unfortunately the work on my hair did not turn out good by any means and that is what I was there for. I went in to have my hair curled for my graduation and I'm guessing the tools used at this salon just don't work well because even as the hair stylist was finishing, I was telling her that it looked like my curls were already falling out and that parts of my hair looked straight. By the time I got to my graduation 45 minutes later, most of my hair looked straight with a few loose waves randomly around my head. I was REALLY upset yesterday because for my master's graduation pictures, my hair really looked messy and ridiculous. Even more upsetting, I just called and sent them a photo of what my hair looked like and asked for my money back and they said the stylist told them that I ran my hands through my hair and pulled out the curls... Um WHAT? I didn't pay $55 to curl my hair to then run my hair through my hair when I also specifically asked the stylist not to brush it out and that I wanted the curls to stay. I am beyond disappointed and frustrated with how my hair turned out and the customer service. read more

After 4 instances and 3 refinements, I am now ready to give this place a full and fair review. I wanted to really like this salon and still kinda do because the staff and customer service was exceptional. But from a consumer standpoint, the overall situation definitely left a sour taste in my mouth. Oct 28: I called in late afternoon to their sister location and was appointed to this location due to the fact I did call in very sudden and late (say around 4?) i schedule for a 5 o'clock cut as a walk in with the front desk. He was very nice and accommodating. Once I got there I was referred to Tammy who was to style my hair. I asked for a blunt shoulder length bob with a subtle aline. I definitely enjoyed conversing with her and had high hopes! Plus it was a blunt cut that I wanted corrected in length, I previously went to Paul Mitchell School and it came out good I just wanted it shorter once I realized my preference. Once Tammy finished I went to the front to pay and I notice how choppy and uneven my fronts were and asked to go back and have it corrected. Tammy had no issue and proceeded to correct my hair. I got home and had my bf take a pic of the back and the side and noticed the back was longer, the side was shorter and the front was long again. Entirely uneven. Called to have a scheduled refinement. Nov. 2: I came in and Tammy greeted me warmly and was apologetic about the unevenness. She said it was because we were fixing it prior when I went back. ( so because we're fixing my hair that was the reason it came out crappier? Lol) Which is totally fine, no harsh feelings. I get that hair comes with mistakes and also everyone's hair is different. I mentioned to her Tammy to please make sure everything's good this time, I don't have much length anymore. At this point I'm over compensating for my desired hair style to just having even cut hair. She finished me up, and sent me off. Everything seemed fine. I had my hair up the remainder of the weekend. Nov 6, as in TODAY. I straighten my hair and notice I literally have a hole in the back. Some sort of landing strip that parts my cut from the back. Literally 3 inches right down in the middle that's shorter than the rest of my hair. And the rest was still choppy and uneven. THATS A TOTAL OF 3 HAIRCUTS AND INCHES OF HAIR YOU HAVE BUTCHERED TAMMY. So I called and was greeted by Vanessa, told her my situation, apologized for having to call numerous of times to fix my hair. Thank you Vanessa for relaying the message and getting back to me asap. Thank you Daniel T for taking your time to fix my hair, carefully and with thought. And just making me feel like I wasn't a burden. You should probably ask for Daniel, he's awesome. I like my hair but overall I'm disappointed because I lost so much hair in the process and so much time going back. And it made me uncomfortable as a customer to constantly call back asking for a refinement. I was starting to feel bad for having a shitty haircut. As for Tammy--- You're a real cool person but girl, pay attention to the hair you are cutting. It should not take 3 tries accompanied with failure. Cutting hair shouldn't mean seating someone in and rushing them out of your chair with a shitty cut. I gave you 3 chances! A blunt cut which means one straight line, no layers. Yet every time I came out looking like my hair was throwing up gang signs. And I had no idea till someone points at the back of my head! I just love Christopher Perry Salon! Perry has been my stylist for over 17 years. He is awesome! Believe me when I say I'm not the easiest client to have. Reasons why: I have stubborn hair that isn't easy to cut. I am VERY particular on how my hair is to look. It must be unique, a little sexy & sassy. My rating is based on my second and last experience here. Went to get my hair done here for the second time in May. First time was just a cut from a guy and it was great. I went again and decided I would dye my hair since it had been a few years since I'd done that. Can't remember the name of the lady who did my hair, but I showed her the picture on the left and said I wanted it with dark and medium browns instead, kind of a mix between highlights and the ombré/balayage look. My hair texture and natural color is obviously different (wavy, a little frizzy and black), so I didn't expect it to look exactly like the pic. But I usually go to the salon with a few pics and go with what the hair stylist thinks looks best for as close to what I want. What I got was the pic on the right. I'm always careful not to go too light because I don't look good with orange/blond hair, but that's what I got. Found out later this was a weave highlight, or however you say it. Obviously looks terrible. Makes my hair look damaged and contrasts my skin tone in a very unflattering way. The orange and blond pieces also never get straight and always look kinky. Just because the salon is expensive, doesn't mean you'll always get a good hair stylist. Sad to say, this is probably the worst hair dye job I've ever had. I box dyed my own hair with the Loreal ombré kit a few years ago and liked it much better than this. When I went to get a haircut after, even that stylist said it came out really good for doing it myself with box dye. But I went here to treat myself before I flew home for a visit and was willing to pay to not do it myself. I got an uneasy feeling when she was highlighting my hair, but I've actually always trusted the hair stylists' opinion and never not liked a trip to the salon until this, so I didn't say anything the entire time. Not much you can do when your hair is already dyed and messed up, so I ended up paying $200+ for this terrible job and just leaving. I went to the Paul Mitchell School in Costa Mesa and the instructor supervising the student cutting my hair was shocked at how terrible and expensive my dye job was. I showed them the pictures I wanted and they said we didn't even have enough time to fix the color because my appointment was scheduled a bit too late. I settled for just a cut (which came out exactly how I wanted, not exactly like the picture I showed them, but long, rounded layers that matched me but was STILL similar to what I wanted). And the cut was only $12 I scheduled an appointment for hnext week to correct the color so I can stop wearing my hair in buns because it's embarrassing to have this hair down for all to see. They said I should have not paid, but I didn't even know you can refuse to pay. Maybe because I'm just not that kind of person. I definitely will be now. The moral is: Stop the hair stylist if you start getting a bad feeling, even if you're like me and usually put all your trust into your hair stylist. Better to be annoying about it than to put all your faith into someone who just does their own thing without considering what it is you actually want. read more

I am so, so happy with the haircut and styling I received from Kelly. I visited her a week ago for a consultation to try and get her opinion on how to fix some ~interesting~ layers I had, she explained how she would be able to fix my cut and get me closer to my reference picture. During the consultation she was super helpful and listened to what I had to say in terms of what had got me up to that point and why my hair was the way it was. I felt like she had actually heard me, and it took a huge weight off my shoulders. On the day of my appointment, Kelly was right on time, which I really appreciated. She let me show her my photos again and answered all my questions about how to achieve a specific look. She took her time in cutting my hair and made sure everything was even and just right. When it came down to the styling, Kelly did exactly what I asked for. Rather than just hitting me with the blow-dryer and rushing me out the door, she actually gave me the exact style I wanted, which involved curling, pinning, and teasing. I was blown away when she was done styling, because my hair has never looked so nice. She was super patient with all my hairstyling questions and genuinely made me feel valued and respected. In general, I could 100% feel that she was putting her full effort into me and wasn't rushing off to start up anything for her next client. I am incredibly thankful that I was able to work with her and get a hairstyle that I'm not ashamed of, and I am extremely happy that I was respected and heard. My hair looks beautiful for the first time in a really long time. I would say from the consultation to the cut to the styling, I received exceptional service. read more
