Christy's makes doughnuts - the cake variety, as opposed to the light bready Shipley's variety. The donuts are respectable and well made , even if for donuts they are a bit overley sweet. The coffee is crap and the kolaches are really made from the cheapest quality of filling. People here have missed the larger meanings of Christy's. Go and watch the people. This little shop has been sitting at the intersection of Drama and Crazy for a very long time. If you are there in the mornings early, you can see the hookers and transvestites getting off of work, the neighborhood junkies coming in for a fix of sugar, cops coming in to start their beat, Montrose bohemians and gays/lesbians and the newly gentrified urbanites coming in and acting so above it all. It is a microcosm of life. People being polite to one another here when, in their actually daily life, they would not cross the street to piss in someone else's ear if their head were on fire. The donuts? Good enough. The rich interaction thick enough for a ticket to a theatre? Priceless. read more

It's difficult to say that this is the "best doughnut and/or kolache in Houston." Difficult for a few reasons: 1) I am incredibly biased due to it being walking distance from the house. 2) I am biased because they are so stinking cheap, and that is what I'm about. 3) To my knowledge, they don't serve kolaches, but they do serve those sausage klobasneks that non-Czechs (myself included) call kolaches. 3a) The best kolaches/klobasneks in the world are in Central Texas. 4) They throw free doughnut holes in the bag. See #2. 5) This is still a Shipley's town... Those difficulties aside, I am quite ready to declare this "at least in the discussion for best in the city," which is nothing to shake a stick at. Forget kolaches, Christy's has a flaky croissant wrapped sausage with cheese for 95 cents! Pair that with a maple iced donut (with free donut hole) and you have a cheap and comforting breakfast. The cinnamon crunch donuts are also a favorite. Or maybe I'll get blueberry cake donut...or a chocolate old fashioned or how about an eclair. No, an apple fritter! Or (probably) all of the above. These were probably the second worst donuts, and definitely worst kolaches I've ever experienced. After two or three bites I finally hit the sausage. More bread than meat. The donut was run of the mill. You can do better at Kroger or Smiths. My advice is go elsewhere read more

Hand to Jezus, I used to think Christy's was a mob front. I used to live within walking distance from it, being that the hours were really weird, I hardly ever saw anyone exit, and they only took cash, I really started to wonder. Good news is, it isn't, and they now take CC. Their donuts are heaven in a little white bag, fluffy, sweet deliciousness. I especially like the maple iced, and pink iced ones. Their pig in the blankets ( I refuse to call them kolaches, they are not) are super good, especially the sausage and cheese. Usually they will throw in some free doughnut holes as well. Limited parking, get there early, and no frills. I also like the have a small seating area, so I'm not getting my car covered in sugar. Definately worth a try! read more

Christie's is a great hole in the wall donut shop. I love the look inside and it shows they put all of their efforts into their very delicious donuts and pastries. After discovering Christie's I have turned my back on the big named places and go to great lengths to shop here. Parking is sometimes an issue but nothing major. I just simply love the flavors and variety that Christie's offers and that its a mom and pop establishment. No idea how they do it. Everything tastes amazing. They're only open in the morning (in my workaholic mind). And they charge so little for their product! Every time I'm on doughnut duty, I can pick up two boxes, be in and out of the tiny shop, spend nearly nothing and come to work a god. Seriously, any time you need to get kolaches (jalapeno is the best) or doughnuts (bear claws or doughnut holes are amazing) just go to Christy's. My only complaint is the parking lot. I've always liked Kolaches from Chrsty's. I had been away for a number of years and we were finally back. Everything was the same. The parking lot was still WAY too small for the amount of traffic there. If you're driving there, you need to park a (small) block away - which is no problem. But today I parked in their parking lot. I had to wait for someone to pull out, which again was no problem. But what struck me was the lack of people pulling in and pulling out of this small lot. The time was about 11am on a Sunday. Probably right on the other side of the peak of business. I went in and got to the end of the line. And I understood what was wrong. The line moved SLOWLY (which explained the lack of car traffic in their lot). From what I could tell, there weren't enough workers to handle the number of people. I ordered one thing. A bacon egg and cheese Kolache. After I gave my order, the server disappeared for a couple minutes. He came back out with my kolache. But in actuality, all it really was was a sliced dinner roll with bacon, egg and cheese added. So, it wasn't baked in. Very disappointing. Would I call this a kolache? Not really (although what we consider a kolache isn't strictly speaking a kolache. But it is what we are accustomed to calling these things). Would I come here again? Yeah, but it's not in the number one slot. read more

My absolute favorite donut shop in Houston! Freshly baked and warm blueberry cake donuts are to die for. I wish I could get myself baked into it, just so I can eat my little heart out of it. The also do breakfast sandwiches WITH KOLACHE BREAD! I love the combo of salty breakfast sausage patties and cheese with the slight sweetness of the fresh kolache bread. These are so addicting, so don't start ordering these unless you can handle the calorie load. Even though the blueberry cake donuts are by far the best, I haven't had a donut here that I haven't loved. The breakfast tacos are actually pretty good too. If I had to choose a donut store as my best friend I would choose Christy's. Every kolache I have tried (all of them offered) have been perfectly moist, cheesy, full and hot. The apple fritters are never burned (which a lot of places do) and the quality of chocolate icing isn't powdery (just kills me when I run into the powder chocolate.) I learned that apparently a kolache is a Texas thing (I have not heard of them before this) and that they are a big deal. Is that right? Boyfriend and I came here to see what the fuss is about, and it seems like a standard donut shop. It smelled super donut-y good, and prices seem fair! They have a pretty big rotation of kolaches (which are like sweet buns filled with meat/cheese or rice, etc??) and we go the one filled with dirty rice and meat. It was pretty good once I got over how unusual it is! Cultural day for me, that is for sure. I would recommend giving this place a try for a donut or kolache. Christy's is a hidden gem with super cheap and delicious kolaches and bagels. On a Wednesday around 10am, my friends and I picked up breakfast here with no wait whatsoever. I got the jalapeño, cheese, and sausage kolache, which had a flavorful filling wrapped in a warm, fluffy bun. I also some tried my friends' donuts. The apple fritter is strangely light for being fried and doused in caramel. The outside is golden and crispy while the inside is fluffy, and there are real bits of caramelized apple studding it. The classic glazed donut is also pillowy and delicious. All the food is definitely comparable to what you'd get at a larger chain such as Kolache Factory or Shipley's! The ambience is pretty no frills, but it's clean and the service is nice. I'll happily come back for more! read more

This place is right by my brothers apartment, so I pass by it every time I come to Houston. Finally, on a Sunday, I decided it was time to give this place a try, especially after reading the Yelp reviews. I ordered sausage and cheese kolaches, jalapeno sausage and cheese kolaches, glazed donuts, and bavarian creme bars. All of it came to around $8.50. Everything was delicious. The glazed donuts were some of the best I've ever had, the bread for the kolaches was absolutely perfect, and the creme bar was awesome. This is definitely not healthy dining but if you want some donuts or kolaches, it seems like Christy's would be hard to beat. read more

The thing that used to really draw me to Christy's was the ham and cheese croissant. At some point, it seems to have gotten healthier. It used to be terrible for the heart, now it's only bad. I had been wanting to try Christy's for a while and it did not disappoint! My boyfriend and I tried it on a very rainy and cold Sunday morning, so it wasn't very crowded. The small line went very quickly, so quickly that I was not at all sure what I wanted. There is a huge, delicious-looking selection! I usually like one salty and one sweet at doughnut places, so I ordered one sausage and cheese kolache, one blueberry cake doughnut, and a dozen doughnut holes (because I had heard they're the best). My bf also ordered a sausage and cheese kolache and he got a chocolate iced, old fashioned doughnut. We both ordered coffees. As an outstanding citizen of the City of Houston, I am extremely loyal to the Shipley Do-nuts Kingdom (ok, obviously I'm not that loyal since I went to this place, but I do view Shipley's as the Golden Standard of doughnut kind). So, anyway, how did Christy's compare to Shipley's? * I would say the sausage and cheese kolache was ALMOST as good, but not quite as good as Shipley's (those things are insane). * The blueberry cake and chocolate-iced old fashioned were perhaps a bit better than Shipley's (there, I said it) *And the doughnut holes were definitely better! I think there's an extra-heavy fried quality to Christy's doughnuts that makes them even more satisfying. Because when you're eating deep fried dough, covered in sugar, you want to get every calorie's worth. They're also really cheap! I must've driven by this place hundreds of times, but have only recently experienced the awesomeness that is Christy's Donuts. The shop ain't much from the outside (or inside for that matter), but it has a certain divey mom & pop shop charm. Prepare to do battle in the parking lot during prime hours - the slightest hesitation and someone else will zoom into that last open spot! The line may be long but it moves quickly - barely enough time to choose something from the huge display case of goodies. I got a dozen sausage, jalapeno, and cheese kolaches, which ran about $10. They asked me if I wanted them heated up - shyeah! So I showed up to work 5 min late but with warm kolaches in tow. A couple people recognized the plain white box and generic plastic bag with "THANK YOU" printed on it, and asked with sparkles in their eyes, "ARE THESE FROM CHRISTY'S??" The thing that makes these kolaches awesome is the bread. It is soft, chewy, and just the right amount of sweet. Have you had ever wondered why the stereotypes about fat donut-loving cops exist? I have and I would blame this place. Yes, this establishment reminds me of a place that would be featured on Marvin Zindler's Slime in the Ice Machine (God rest his soul) but those donuts are so gosh darn tasty. Tried the jalapeno and cheese kolache and it was magnificent. I have always been peeved by bakeries like the Kolache Factory who make their kolaches too dough-y but Christy's gets the sausage/bread/cheese proportions just right. Additionally, the donuts were just as fresh and I noticed that one of their famous donut holes had snuck into my bag. After rationally processing that donut holes have no animate abilities, I figured it came from my kind server. 9/10 times would probably go back. read more

Hands down best kolaches in H town. Parking can be rough in the mornings on the weekends, but if you're like me and like to sleep in then you'll be fine by the time you make it to Christy's. They get it done in no time! Here is what I usually get (but obviously not the same thing everytime): Sausage, Cheese Kolaches - the bread on their kolaches is different and better than any other kolache place. Its a bit sweeter and much more flavorful. Sausage, Cheese Jalapeno Kolaches Donut holes Chocolate donuts.. ohh wow Breakfast burrito's are pretty awesome too... give it a try Carton of Chocolate milk - always yummy to top it off a good kolache. But, Christy's is local, they give you a few free donut holes each time you order, and they gave me $17.00 back on a $3.05 order when I gave them $20.00. Little things people... Connie B's review pretty well sums it up. I just don't get why there are so many glowing accolades over this place. I've been here at least 5 times over the past 6 months, most recently about 3 weeks ago. The deal here is that their croissants and kolaches use the cheapest low-end convenience store deli meat and cheese that you can imagine. No matter the quality of the kolaches or croissants, the meat ruins it and the cheese doesn't help either. Oh yeah, their breakfast tacos are among the worst I've had, and the tables inside have been filthy almost every time I've been here. I will say that the jalepeno sausage kolaches are pretty decent because they use real jalapeno sausage, and they're only $0.89/each. But any kolache or croissant involving ham, turkey, or "bacon" (they use some extra fatty pseudo bacon here) is bad news at any price. At first taste, the croissants seem pretty good, but once you order them to go, you'll see that the bakery paper they wrap them in will be drenched in butter (and other grease?). The butter overload tastes good at first, but it's too much. Having pointed out the problems here, and there are plenty of them, I must acknowledge that the name is Christy's DONUTS, not Christy's Breakfast Tacos or Christy's Croissants, and their donuts, from what I've tried, are a solid 3 - 4 star quality. If you're only looking for donuts to go, Christy's is a decent option. Pretty much anything else, with the exception of the jalepeno sausage kolache, would be a mistake IMO. read more

ITL, this is the place to get donuts or kolaches. I particularly enjoy old fashioned/cake donuts, and the ones they have here are amazing. Whether you want chocolate or just a plain classic glazed donut, you cant go wrong. Also, their kolaches are the bomb. The bread is nice and buttery, but they still maintain the optimal bread to sausage ratio. I usually get the cheese, jalapeno sausage ones for that kick i need in the morning. I miss morning kolaches in clear lake, but this always cures the cravings when i dont want to leave the loop. Lastly, they throw in some extra donut holes to eat as you drive home because they are well aware of that intoxicating aroma filling up your car. One warning - if you get here around peak time, their parking lot can be a mess. read more

My Order: 1 glazed donut, a ham and cheese kolache and a small Starbucks Mocha Cafe in the bottle. I have not tried everything here, just the items above and I have only been here once. My visit here was for convenience only. This place is very close to my job, and there are no other donut places in the immediate area. After asking a coworker if the place was good or not (after doing a quick Google maps search for a breakfast spot in the area), she stated it was the "go-to" spot for everyone in the morning, because it was relatively close. So, I set out to visit Christy's Donuts. At first sight, the shop's exterior does not even look appealing. Honestly, it looks like it belongs a few streets over in 3rd Ward...or even 5th Ward. I understand that most Uptown/Montrose establishments have that "old" look, but this place is indeed old...AND DIRTY. Looks like a roach infested corner store from the outside, with an inside to match! You might ask, if this place was so dirty, why did I continue with my order? Because I was desperately hungry and had only 15 minutes to eat, that's why. I also proceeded with the order because there were lots of other people in there eating, so I figured it couldn't have been too bad. I will not be returning. I have opted to get donuts from the River Oaks Kroger instead, whenever I'm in a crunch. By the way, the donuts were just OK. Recently I decided to start trying new places in my neighborhood that I'd always looked passed. Christys was the top one. Being a Texan, why wouldn't I want to try everyone's kolaches? It comfortable. Very tiny dinning area, smaller standing space for the line to order. They had a decent selection of your everyday donuts and kolaches. OH did I mention the ac was broken?! Poor kiddos sweatin in the food their making and handing to us in that hallway of a building. As far as food goes... Well and it's not looking(really feeling) to good. I ordered two kolaches and misc. donuts. I get home and find out that the kolaches are jalapeños sausage and cheese, which there wasn't even a label for in the display case so idk how they gave me these when I didn't ask for them. And then one of them was rock hard, and the sausage was rubber like and almost purple. Seeing as I live close I went back to exchange them for the ones I asked for and fresh. I just waited in line and told one of the guys I had chit chatted with 5 minutes prior to exchange my food. They were super cool about it but when he went to the back with my bag of new kolaches, I was scared he was rubbing it on his taint or something since I came back. I still have faith in falling in love with new shop and I'll always have a spot for artery clogging kolaches in my heart. Pillowy donuts for cheap prices. That is all. I think Christy's is seriously underrated and deserves a medal--even the service is quick and the people are so patient and friendly. They stick in complimentary donut holes into your bag and their kolaches are massive. Go for the holes or apple fritters, in my opinion--they sold me with their light airiness and yeasty dough flavor tinted with glaze. In the case of the fritter, it's more fried to a crispy edge and there are apple bits laced with cinnamon that are studded all over it. DELICIOUS.
