My short review, if you don't have time to read: Chelsea Jenkins is the bomb hair stylist! If you have time to read, here is my long winded review (go to the last paragraph to skip the back story leading up to my appointment): I have been wearing my hair colored since 1996. I am of mixed ethnicities - my mother is Vietnamese and my father is Black. My natural hair color is jet black (blue-black in the sun) and I have type 3b curly hair. I am very particular about my hair and I don't trust just anyone to color my hair. As a matter of fact, in the 24 years that it's been colored, only 3 people have colored it. The original guy in Detroit who first colored it, my prior stylist here in Washington, and then my current stylist in California (I moved to Cali in 2006). I usually get my roots touched up every 6-8 weeks and I get blonde highlights in the spring and summer months. Due to COVID-19, salons in Cali still have not been able to open for coloring (only for outdoor haircuts) and it's been 6 months since my last appointment. My hair is so dark and needs 40 volume to be lifted, so it has to be done professionally. I was desperately waiting for my stylist to get approval to open. I had about 4.5 inches of root growth and it was driving me crazy! I ended up having to go to Seattle with my sister for a quick weekend to take care of some business up there. Since Washington salons were open, I had the great idea of going back to my prior stylist in Gig Harbor. I was so happy about the option to go back to her, but it turns out she was on vacation on the dates I was coming to town. I was so bummed and complained to my other sister who lives in Tacoma and owns a hot yoga studio there. She knows that I was apprehensive about letting someone new color my hair. I told her that I might take a chance and try Gene Juarez and asked her opinion about that. She told me that one of her yoga students owned a salon and suggested I go to her instead. That student was Amy, owner of Virde Salon. My sis checked with Amy, but she was booked solid on my dates (which was only 2.5 weeks away) and she referred me to Chelsea. Amy assured my sis that Chelsea was good and would take good care of me. Thankfully, I was able to book a spot on Chelsea's calendar for Friday, 8/14, and then I reached out to her via text, after checking out her work on her IG page, to inquire about a phone consultation before coming in. She had replied that she preferred to communicate via text, but she could do a phone call if I preferred. I was thankful that she was willing to do a call because I really needed to discuss my hair needs and my nervousness about going to someone new. I was fine going to text communication after the initial call. On the phone call, she was very pleasant and seemed very knowledgeable about her craft so I felt more at ease about coming in. The day of my appointment, I arrived at the salon, excited and nervous at the same time. I immediately felt comfortable with Chelsea. We hit it off with conversation like she had been my stylist for years. She made me feel at ease by explaining what she was doing throughout my appointment. I learned some stuff I didn't even know about color that day! Chelsea colored my roots, put in highlights, and trimmed my ends. I explained to her that at home, I usually left the salon with wet hair and let my curls dry naturally. She asked if she could diffuse my hair so that she could make sure that the color match was correct (and so she could make any needed corrections immediately), because if I left with wet hair, I wouldn't see the true color until the next day after it dried and she didn't want the color to be off. I had a bad experience with diffusion before and I didn't want that. She then offered to blow dry and flat iron my hair. I was so excited about this option because my current stylist doesn't blow dry/flat iron my hair. I think it's because I have so much hair, and it's thick. Honestly, it's been over 14 years now so I don't even know the full reason any more, she just doesn't do it. I haven't had my hair flat ironed professionally in probably 25 years! Chelsea said that it was important to her that the client has the full salon experience, which includes walking out the salon feeling transformed. Well, let me tell you, I got the full experience that day! My color was absolutely gorgeous and Chelsea got my hair so straight and it was stunning! I got soooo many compliments from friends and family and strangers all week! I felt so beautiful leaving the salon. I couldn't have asked for a better experience! Chelsea did some sort of magic in my hair, because it stayed perfectly straight for a full week, and I only need to lightly run a flat iron over it 2 times in that week. I am so glad to have found Chelsea, and if California salons don't open up for a while longer and I happen to need to go up to Seattle, I'm definitely going to see her again. read more

Love love love this salon! The atmosphere is calm yet exciting! The space has great lighting which equals amazing hair results! My stylist (Chelsea) listens and understands the vision of my perfect hair then adds her expertise for a truly stunning result. I have never gotten so many compliments on how perfectly my hair fits my skin, style and eyes. My hair is always stronger and healthier when I leave the salon! How is this even possible?! When I asked her how she can achieve this she told me it's a combination of the color line and carefully selected products she uses during the service. She is my perfect stylist! I LOVE Virde Salon!! This little gem has an awesome atmosphere with great decor, the product line (Kevin Murphy) is amazing, and of course my stylist, Amy is just fantastic! I'm hesitant to say Amy is a "perfectionist" because that's totally not her vibe, but she is someone who takes absolute pride in her work and will make sure you leave her salon feeling and looking good! She did a perfect job reshaping my hair and really took the time to explain as she went. She has also waxed my brows and of course they look amazing! She uses a special type of wax that is very gentle and a jade roller to help cool down the skin! My husband started to see her and now he will alternate between her and Biagio (Amy books up quick and he is a procrastinator) but he truly likes both of their cuts and personalities! Plenty of free on-street parking with light to medium traffic area. If you haven't checked this place out yet you're missing out! read more

Chelsea gave me what I think is probably the best haircut I have had in years. Without me even saying what I wanted she said her ideas, which was exactly what I wanted! I honestly could not be happier with my experience and she has gained a new client for as long as I live in Tacoma. read more

Amy is the best. The dyes she uses make my hair feel healthy and shiny. She dyes my deep dark brown hair a proper shade of ginger and the red lasts without turning brassy for months. I honestly cannot recommend her enough. She also always knows how to style my hair properly and give me a great cut even when I'm unsure of what I want done. read more

I love Amy! She's been cutting my hair since I moved to Tacoma in 2014. The first time I went in, I showed her a few images of styles I liked, we chatted about length, maintenance, and she calmed my nerves about trying something new. Since then, I've loved the haircut so much that I haven't tried another style. If I ever do want to change it, I know Amy will have amazing ideas for me. She's fun to be around and I love going in to see her. Now getting my haircut never feels like another errand I have to run, but rather it's "me time" and catching up with a friend! read more

I've been seeing Amy for about a year and a half and I absolutely love her! She does the perfect color melt on me every time and we just put in some sewn in extensions and they look amazing! The color blends so well with my natural hair and she did such a good job with the placement to make it as natural looking as possible! I love Virde Salon! It's so light and peaceful inside. There's always parking which is a bonus these days in the ever growing Tacoma area. Amy is my stylist. She cares about giving you a cut that fits your lifestyle and works with your hair type to make sure it always fall into place. I have been going to miss Chelsea now for over a year, I know her personally so I know she's a good person and a damn good professional hairstylist. I have sent her family and friends. This new salon she's in is soo gorgeous!! The natural lighting alone makes this place special! The atmosphere is very warm and inviting, the bathroom is very well kept, the shampoo bowls are super comfy you can just let your feet up, they use new technology.. it's a great place and I know Chelsea will rock it there! read more

Man I hate to write one star reviews. But when I came home to my crying wife and heard why she was so upset I had to write it. She had been looking forward to getting her hair done for the last month in preparation for an event we are attending this weekend. She had a great meeting with Amy a month ago and was assured that what she wanted done was in Amy's ability to do and set an appointment. Then when she showed up today Amy refuses to do her hair saying only that she is no longer comfortable doing it and gives her appointment away to someone else immediately! WTF? That is no way to treat your customers. Will never be going here or recommend it to anyone unless Amy personally apologizes for being so rude and explains why she would treat my wife that way. read more

I love this salon! After dying my hair a deep red for several years I went to Amy and she managed to make me a blonde after just one session... and it's even softer than before I colored it! Amy is truly an amazing stylist. Not only does She show a profound amount of skill with my cuts but also creativity. Recently she and I did a full set of tape in extensions lengthening my hair by about 5 inches. Her attention to detail while doing this was nothing short of exceptional with how she matched my color to the extensions and blended my hair to make it look and feel completely natural. I am absolutely inlove with my stubborn to grow hair again and feel more confident than ever. I 100% recommend Amy as the last stylist you will ever have.
