The beer was cold and the food was pretty good. The had lots of different options. I would have liked to have seen some more traditional English dishes though like bangers and mash, or sausage rolls, or even a shepherds pie maybe. But they did have fish and chips. I opted for the Chicken and Waffles, and it was just what I wanted. They used a siracha maple syrup which was different, yet pretty tasty. I also sampled the Mac and cheese and the French fries--All very good. The place was pretty big, in fact it seemed bigger than its parking lot size. They had both indoor and outdoor seating and lots of it. On a Sunday afternoon, they weren't too busy. It is a place I would return though.

The shepherd's pie was another standout, cozy, flavorful, and wonderfully filling. And do not skip the bread pudding -- it was absolutely amazing and the perfect sweet finish to the meal. The only negative was our booth: right in front of the door, so every time it opened (and it was often), we got blasted with cold air. Next time we'll sit further in or upstairs. If you're running around Old Saybrook and need a quick, hearty meal, this is the place to be.

My wine pour was significantly less than my husband's, which was not a good start especially after having waited. We ordered small plates to start and I wish we stopped there. The seared tuna was great and had both an aioli and a spicy soy based sauce. My husband had the Kobe beef pot stickers and they were tasty, with a nice warm veggie medley in the middle of the plate. The pot stickers could have used a bit more sauce though. When it came time to order entrees, I was fully set on the lobster panini. The server advised me not to order that, and raved about the carbonara, so I ordered that instead. Big mistake. Huge! I wish she just let me order my panini. The carbonara was full of dark meat chicken (gross!!) that tasted gamey, and the sauce was broken. It clearly had too much butter and was not an authentic carbonara. I told our server multiple times that I did not like it. I had separated all the chicken in a pile and ate maybe 1/3 of the pasta. She strangely kept offering to make me the short rib pappardelle instead, which I declined, as I had no interest in that dish. I found it so odd that she picked out a specific dish to offer as a substitute. At least if she offered the lobster panini, it would have made sense since that's what I originally wanted to order, if not for her meddling in my order. My husband ordered a burger cooked medium. It was fully well done. The fries were limp and not crispy. Not a good showing. He wrapped his up to take home, but I did not. Clearly not eating 3/4 of the meal and also not taking it home was a sign of my discontent. I wish I took photo of my plate as I left it. I was pretty offended when she did not remove it from the bill. It's fine, we paid it, but that will be the first and last time we dine at Aspen. We paid our bill as charged, took the cost of my meal out of her tip, and called it a day. This is something I do not often do, but I felt warranted on this occasion, due to the poor food quality and her absolute indifference. We will not be back. The food was amazing. I loved it. Our parents loved it. Literally everyone I talked to love it. Everything was fresh, perfectly prepared, and delicious. One of the highlights of the first day of married life was devouring the leftovers (yes, they help you package those to take them home - you paid for them, after all!). I honestly can't pick one aspect of our menu that trumped the others, it was all so delightful. The appetizers were great, the main course (we did a buffet) was amazing, and the desserts (we had an assortment) were splendid. Second, the staff. Everyone that worked on our reception was great. Erin's clear communication made planning everything a breeze, and Desiree's oversight ensured that everything went smoothly during the event. Cloud Nine will transport a set amount of materials to the venue for you (we had them transport our table numbers and runners). The Ellie Mitchell Pavilion has a super strict timeline, so this was a huge help. Being that its a historic building, the Pavilion also has really strict rules about where, how, and when the food can be prepared. Cloud Nine takes all of that in stride every time they cater an event there, and made sure everything was executed in compliance with the policies. Knowing I was in such good hands took a huge amount of stress off of me during that day! Third, the staff again. This was huge. During the reception, Cloud Nine puts someone in charge of making sure the bride and groom has all the food and drink they need during photos, etc before the entrance. AMAZING. This meant that we actually got to enjoy the delicious appetizers, rather than having to miss out. It also meant that we got to enjoy a beverage and take a minute to relax! Fourth, the pricing. Catering a large event is never very economical, regardless of who caters it. I think that Cloud Nine offers an amazing service at a very reasonable price. In addition, Erin was incredibly accommodating in creating a menu that not only covered all of the food and drink we wanted, but also fit within our budget. Honestly, I have nothing but glowing reviews of Cloud Nine catering. I wish that we didn't live in CA and could stop by their cafe for a bite to eat! Our experience with them was amazing, and I highly recommend them.
