Just for the milkshakes: had I known about the prior reviews on burgers, I actually may have been tempted lol and see where it's at, reviews seem to be everywhere. Was in a mood of chocolate milkshake, and say this totally rocks. Thick too. Interior-wise, it's not exactly date worthy; heck, even the outside would scare off most, it's a bit run-down. Kinda reminds me of a saloon for some reason, or a western theme cowboys, but you get the picture, it's antiquated, but the whole idea. Lots of spacious seating. We're from out of town and defied the conventional fast food places. I would say that this was more like, drive up, step out of the car and wait kind of "drive thru" experience. In fairness the wait wasn't actually that long, but while we waited we did have a good chuckle at the ramshackle "window display" and slightly unsightly view of the kitchen. This place would be an excellent candidate for Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Makeover. I have always thought that the Chuckwagon is the best locally owned burger joint in Mount Vernon, but after today they will have to redeem themselves. I have a pet peeve about my burger buns being smashed. This usually happens because the cooks store them incorrectly, or sometimes the foodservice vender delivers them smashed, at any rate by Deluxe Cheeseburger looked like it had been run over buy a truck. It's not that hard to serve a burger bun like you see in photos, you just have to make sure you handle them properly, and don't stack them one bag on top of another. Our fries were good, and the tarter sauce at The Chuckwagon is great. Quite a few years ago The Chuckwagon won an award for the best burger, but believe me, they wouldn't have won any award for the sloppy smashed mess they served me today. Well let's see been there several times. Burgers were dry and hardly a paddy. This was the last straw. Show up with the family for milkshake and food. Open sign on So we park and walk up to the door and just like that they lock the door and turn off the sign. Mind you it's 200pm in the afternoon. Totally with in there ours of open. For as long as I can remember, my dad would treat me out to Chuck Wagon after my violin lessons and performances. I love the deluxe with either a blackberry milkshake or the peanut butter milk shake. The Chuck Wagon is great for families. And in most ways, especially to me, it's memorable and it takes me back to some great memories with both friends and family. So whether you live in the area or on your way up north, chuck wagon is worth the wait. I'd name it my ultimate burger joint for life! read more

There are definite pros and cons here. I will start with the cons; it's expensive and all extras cost, the burgers are pre made patties. Pros; it's totally train fun, kitschy cool that works, the orders are made to order and piping hot when they hit your table which really helps the taste, it's clean which say a lot about a restaurant with a bunch of stuff in it. Wanted to try out an old establishment in Mt Vernon. So, I'm here at the Chuckwagon Drive-in. Ordered the chili burger for $6. Decent size and price. Hamburgers were pre-formed from frozen patties, microwaved and bland in color. Chili was clearly from a can, but tasty. Bun was pretty good. The girl at the counter was very engaging and friendly. Pretty good crowd of people while I was there. All seemed to get good service. Overall, not the best burger I've had (not even this week) but not horrible either. I grew up with my parents taking me to Chuckwagon as a kid. I grew up loving the Patty Melt and fresh Banana milkshakes. SO, when I was back in town, I was excited to bring my daughter and have her experience the best lunch ever! However, I was gravely disapointed.....my patty melt was on white bread (not rye) and was not a fresh made banana milkshake, was very gritty! I had a stomach ache an hour after eating and my sister got horribly sick. I think it must be new ownership from when I was kid and the food has gone downhill. Sad! read more

I grew up going to Chuckwagon almost every Saturday. In the early 80's you could actually pay to watch programs on a little t.v. at your table, and they had a juke box, where I loved to play Madonna.As a child I would constantly beg my mother for one of their huge sundaes off their wall of Sundae pictures. Alas, she would always say no, and only allowed me to get a 1 scoop ice cream cone. To this day, I have anxiety dreams where as an adult I'm allowed to finally pick something, but my indecisiveness never allows me to chose, and the restaurant closes, my tour bus is getting ready to leave, or my kids are screaming and I have to leave in a hurry, etc. It's save to say that I have issues. When I was pregnant with my children, I would make my husband drive me 45 minutes to Chuck Wagon so I could get their Blue Bubble Gum Ice cream (which didn't have bubblegum pieces in it, just the way I liked it). One dreadful night my husband made that drive with me, only to find that they changed their ice cream to the type that had bubblegum pieces in it. My huge, pregnant self broke down in tears right in front of the cashier. It was a sad day, as I am not much of a multi-tasker, and can't chew gum and eat ice cream at the same time. Although the restaurant has changed hands this past decade, and gone are the various pieces of construction paper tacked to the wall with various menu items, it stil has decent food. I am not a vegetarian, but I love the Veggie Burger, and a side of buffalo chips. It's definitely a greasy spoon, and has the ambiance and decor of one, but it's well worth the trip out there for some greasy yuminess. read more

A little pricey compared to the chain burger joints, but you can't beat the peanut butter milkshakes. They're amazing. And everything that gives this place a finishing touch are the western miniature trains passing by above you while you're eating. Gotta go to this place just to experience this style of dining. Sorely disappointed. Precooked burgers and no seasoning at all. Had a teriyaki burger that was dry and flavorless with its precooked patty. The ladies have a funny looked when asked for beef to be medium rare and told us they dont do that. The grilled chicken burger had no seasoning and was very dry precooked chicken. A friend brought me here after some serious strawberry picking. We were pretty hungry and in need of some salt, and he remembered liking this place quite a bit when he lived up there. I can see the charm of this place - the small town (is it okay that I call Mt. Vernon a small town??) "mom and pop" burger joint. They had trains racing around above our heads (reminded me of Billy McHale's) and the staff was very friendly. I ordered the brunch burger with onions and a side of fries. The burger was just okay. Everything is better with a fried egg and bacon, but you can't mask the lower quality of the beef patty. I've had much better burgers from other small burger places. I ordered two other burgers for coworkers and I got all three in about five minutes on a Sunday afternoon which is very reasonable time for all being made to order. I have been to a lot better hamburger shops in Mt. Veronica. Patties a little thin but toppings ok. I was there about 30 minutes after they open on a Saturday and had the whole place to myself. They have a big menu but other then getting a combo meal everything else is extra (fries,salad etc..) you can get a burger like you want but drink and sides like fries are extra. The menu here is eclectic and there's something for nearly everyone: Buffalo burgers for the adventurous, and vegetarian burgers for the weight-conscious. The art of the post-WWII hamburger joint burger is being lost, but we're fortunate in the Skagit Valley having a couple of places that adhere to that older-style burger--You know what I'm talking about: Thin patty, airy bun, chopped lettuce and mayo served with the most basic crinkle-cut french fry you could ask for. I've seen some criticisms of the fries, but I for one appreciate the simplicity of the drive-in style crinkle-cuts. As more places try to make their fries stand out by double-frying, tempura-battering, or shoe-stringing them, sometimes a connoisseur yearns for a taste from the past. Since The Chuckwagon is about a mile from my house, I'm able to walk there with the kids on nice days. It doesn't look like much from the outside (or the inside, really) but the staff is uniformly cheerful and attentive. A suspended O-scale model train meanders though the kitchen and dining room overhead, while a variety of western style paraphernalia decorate the walls. The cinder-block restaurant hails from another era, and it certainly has seen better days, but the inside is clean and well-maintained. The food offerings are what one would expect from a 70-year-old burger joint: A mix of the old and the new with burger variants utilizing most of the toppings one could reasonably expect on a burger, whether it's a fried egg, avocado, chili, or jalapenos. I recommend the Ranch BBQ Burger, which is a single patty with the options of cheese and onions (grilled please!) with an onion ring on top and smothered in a mix of BBQ sauce and the house ranch dressing. The single thin patty makes this a hearty yet not heavy meal, provided you don't weigh yourself down with a lot of fries afterward. A large fry is truly enough to feed two or three people. Their milkshakes and ice cream are courtesy of an Oregon creamery called Cascade Glacier. Their flavors rotate a bit, but they usually have two or three uncommon ones, like Blue Bubble Gum, Black Licorice, or Mountain Blackberry. If you're a people-watcher, on a nice day, you'll see a good number of elderly people cycling through (often just getting a shake or ice cream,) clearly enjoying the change of pace from a typical fast food place. The food isn't perfect, of course, and the price is significantly higher than what you'll pay for a burger and fries at a drive through, but sometimes it's worth paying more for a taste of your childhood, or to eat fast food that still feels honest and unprocessed. read more

Had only good experiences with this restaurant, been a weekly customer for 4 years. Until, I went in to get a baked potato replaced after my order had been messed up the week prior. The cook slammed cashed register and yelled at me. First refusing to fix it then saying he would. He was very argumentative, saying I don't come in as often as I say (I come in about 3 times a week, I live right up the road) and yelling that I need a receipt. I showed him my receipt as he had not asked for it prior. He then proceeded to stomp and yell and re-make my baked potato and when I got home I found that the baked potato he had made me had been spit on! I have notified the Department of Health, as well as the Police Dept. NEVER GOING THERE AGAIN! AND YOU SHOULDN'T EITHER! The Chuck Wagon is a good restaurant with a very fun, Western, old time atmosphere. It's been around since 1949 and I have been here several times over the years. It brings back such memories to me because not much on the inside of the establishment has seemed to change. I came here with my dad a few times several years back and he has been passed away now for 6.5 years. Every time I step foot in the Chuck Wagon, I am reminded of him and the times I ate here with him. My most recent visit was yesterday. I noticed that the prices have gone up quite a bit! They have increased every single time I have been here. The service is friendly however the older Asian woman who is back by the food makes sure you are not given more than one refill on your coffee or soda because only one refill is free. The condiments are yummy and the first one is free but if you want any more, I believe they are like .40 for a small plastic container. I had the supreme with American cheese and it was delicious. The crinkle cut fries were also good and the espresso almond fudge milkshake was okay. It wasn't very thick. In fact, it was really liquidy and milky. They used not enough ice cream and too much milk! My daughter's chicken strips looked tasty but she only got two in her kids meal and she wouldn't share a bite with me to try them because she was hungry and didn't get a lot of food. She ate some of my fries too after finishing all of her food. I will definitely be back to the Chuck Wagon in the future because of the atmosphere inside the restaurant and the memories it invokes for me. I would probably order the supreme with American cheese again because it is delicious and the size I like my burger to be. But I think I would pass on the milkshakes because they are extremely expensive. I would rather go get a container of Ben & Jerry's for 1$ less than the price of a milkshake from here and contains a lot more ice cream. read more

Saw that there was a near by burger joint, stopped in with my kids, and wow, didn't know there was a place like this still around. Kids loved the trains! The western theme style is very unique and different from other restaurants. Food was great, had the Bacon deluxe with cheese and crinkle fries. Kids had the kids corn dog meal and chocolate milkshakes. Food was hot and unlike other fast food joints where the fries are soggy and the burgers are small. There are toy trains criss-crossing the overhead, old arcade games, and a train/Western motif that is really neat. You order at the counter, but they bring the food out to your table. Very clean. The menu is burger/fried food focused. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger with fries. I am not a huge fan of crinkle cut fries, but they also have pretty good seasoned curly fries. This place is a major disappointment. Burger pattys tasted like they came from McDonald's, fries were clearly frozen, and I asked for my burger without then bun and apparently that means you don't get any of the other ingredients that normally come on it. Traditionally when you order a burger without then bun, you still get all the ingredients in the burger you ordered, like tomatoes, etc. The atmosphere was cool and I liked the little train they had going around, and some neat arcade games. Saw this place in a list of best places to go in western Washington. Been around since the forties, they must be doing something right. I ordered a classic cheeseburger, small fries and a malt for about $13. When my good came. I noticed the pattie was very thin and looked like it had been steamed instead of cooked on the flattop. Tasted ok but was mostly lettuce. The fries eye crinkle cut frozen variety, no flavor at all. The malt just tasted like a runny shake, no malt flavor. Major disappointment for something so unique. Ate at the Chuckwagon, had not been there in years. A long time institution of Mount Vernon with moderate praise from the locals. The old west motif on the outside carries to the interior, along with the adorable touch of a working model train line following the ceiling. Plenty of evenly spaced booth seating, the staff was friendly and engaging. The food, priced cheaply, was a major let down, I had the Last Chance burger the addition of liquid smoke an intriguing addition that can quickly overpower any dish. Instead the card board thin patties got lost in the mountain of shredded lettuce, great for a salad not so for a burger. Fries were curly, thick cut, adequately seasoned and average. After eating my salad in a bun I left still craving a decent burger. read more

This is a classic Burger stand right out of the sixties, with indoor seating. They ownership change about three years ago, and the changes have been plentiful. But they still make an awesome burger. I love the potato burger... a potato pattie, wedged between a couple of 1/4# hamburger patties, and a couple of slices of cheese. It's pretty F/N good. Unfortunately, they dropped the Oyster burger. This is a really good place to get a great burger. I asked the cashier what she recommended because I probably won't have the opportunity to go back, and I wanted to make sure I got their specialty meal, to get the full experience. She suggested the Potato Burger, as that is pretty much what they're most known for. I went for that and made it a combo with fries and a drink. While waiting for your meal, you are entertained with it's great decorations. Some say it's "Old West"...meh. I think it's more "Frontier". Either way, it's cool. They have wooden sculptures of cowboys and indians. There're pictures of old-style ranch hands, caricatures etc. There are also framed newspaper/magazine clippings of awards they've won and stories that have been written about them . The biggest conversation piece(s) are the 2 model trains running overhead throughout the establishment. They are really fun to watch, and they seem to strike up reminiscent stories from everyone of every age. My meal was brought right to me in a timely fashion by a cheerful server. I was surprised by how big it actually was. My "Potato Burger" was 2 beef patties, with a potato patty in between, with they're "sauce", mayo, lettuce, and tomato, all on a toasted bun. It was placed on a generous helping of fries. The burger was pretty good. Honestly, there wasn't TOO much flavor to it. The sandwich definitely "worked", but I wasn't blown away by it. I remember thinking, well it's like I didn't need to order fries because now I have a potato patty in my burger. Boy was I glad I ordered fries. The fries are awesome. Crinkle cut, seasoned exactly right, not greasy and very crispy. I loved these fries. They're possibly the best I've had in WA. If you order anything in this restaurant, make sure you get fries too. The reason I give this place 5 stars is that my experience was all around great. The decor was "thematic" without being tacky, the food was all-around great, and the service was very helpful, kind and generous. I make special mention of that because I was in the middle of a 5-hour motorcycle ride, on an early December day, I was also quite frigid. I asked for a cup of hot water to hold to try and get some heat back in me, and they quickly obliged. Going that extra mile is what gets customers and awesome Yelp reviews. If you are ever in Mt.
