To start I had been a customer of theirs for about 15 years. Had a heat pump icing problem. They…read moretroubleshot it to the control board and sensor. I waited for the quote but in the mean time looked up the part numbers for the control board and sensor, with shipping and handling it was under $340. The quote came in at 1.5 hrs labor to change those parts and was going to charge over $1700!! I expected it to be around $750 to $800. Got it done elsewhere for $790. Last year I had a tiny part under full warranty that took 30 minutes to change and they wanted to charge me $1,000. In the end we settled for about $700 and this was under full warranty. Never again, be very wary. I feel bad now for the folks I referred to them in the past. Bottom line i am going with a company who is charging $790 for the job vs over $1,700 which is in the ballpark I expected. Be wary.

My air conditioning was going in and out, so I contacted Pernell to come have a look at it. They…read moredid send someone out that day. The technician said he could do a repair for a couple of thousand dollars but strongly suggested having a new system installed (which he said would be more around 10k), since mine was "old." (Almost 10 years.) I said I'd need to discuss with my husband, but he went ahead and set me up with an appointment for a new unit estimate. He said if we did end up wanting a repair, I'd need to wait for the part to be ordered but he also suggested replacing the capacitor, which he said could be done right away. I was also convinced to sign up for a yearly "service" that would give me 2 seasonal system checks and a discount on all future repairs/maintenance for the year. I was asked if I could put an advertising sign in my yard (I said yes), if I would leave a review (I did, and it was favorable), and ended up paying around $500 that day for the visit, yearly fee, and AC fluid refill. I spoke with my husband later, decided to go with the repair, called Pernell, canceled the estimate appointment, was told they would get back to me about the repairs, and then I never heard back from them again. Though my AC continued to act screwy through the remainder of the hot season, it has been able to carry through to the Fall, where cooling is no longer as much of an issue. I have now been recommended two different AC repair companies by family, and I will most certainly be calling one of these for future work and NOT Pernell.

Warning: Review Coercion & $1,100+ Pricing Discrepancy…read more I used Santa Air for five years and recommended them to many friends. Unfortunately, their business model has changed from "honest and hardworking" to "opaque and manipulative." The Technical Issues: In 2020, Santa Air installed my trane system but failed to properly connect the emergency heat strips. I spent five winters wondering why my house wouldn't stay warm below 30°F. They missed this mistake during every subsequent maintenance visit over the 5 years. Recently, they tried to charge me $1,700 for repairs I didn't need. A second opinion confirmed their diagnosis was wrong; that technician fixed Santa Air's original installation mistake and the actual sensor issue for a total of $575. The Billing Issues: Their current pricing "tiers" (Bronze, Silver, Gold) are incredibly over-inflated compared to other local HVAC companies. And if you only need a repair included in the Gold tier, you have to pay for all the things you don't need in the tiers below it. When I realized the invoice was vague and the work wasn't needed, I cancelled. The Ethics Issue: The most disappointing part was the office's response. They tried to emotionally guilt-trip me. They held my refund hostage, telling me they would only return my money if I removed my negative reviews. I refused to be coerced and had to fight for three months through my bank to recover the funds for services never rendered. Don't let the high star rating fool you--they are actively pressuring customers to delete bad experiences. Always get a second opinion!!!
