We always have to stop here when we're in town. The California burrito at Chula is one of my favorite burritos of all time. I usually get it with the white fish, it's so flavorful and the fish always tastes fresh. Their fresh chips are good too, not too greasy. Can't go wrong with their sashimi options either. I've been meaning to come here for literally 5 years. So happy I finally made it. This place is a gem. Absolutely loved it. It's centrally located in Phoenix and a very bright and welcoming, open concept market place. The staff answered all my Questions and were very friendly. It was full of people, laughter, and energy. Definitely a perfect place for all occasions, especially if you love seafood. For food we had the clam chowder, Korean poke bowl, and sampled each seafood taco they offer. I really have no complaints other than the sides (potato mac salad and coleslaw) were bland but kind of expected that. I will start with the chowder as this exceeded my expectations, and I'm a chowder girl. A bowl (10$) is massive, rich and creamy, and loaded with goodies. Generous amount of potatoes and clams...Kind of steal honestly. I'm from New England area originally and I am tempted to say it's the best clam chowder I have ever had. Simply amazing. The tacos (grilled fish, crispy fish, and shrimp) were so good. I will say they are pricey (12$ for one taco). They didn't disappoint, and I literally devoured them. I appreciate the corn tortillas as they add a nice flavor. The crispy fish stood out the most though. A light batter, generous 3 oz of protein, traditional toppings of cabbage and pico, and it's own sauce (each taco had its own). They were not stingy with the sauces, which I loved. They were zesty, vibrant, and delicious. Also, these aren't street tacos, they're definitely bigger. Lastly, the Korean poke bowl. Beautiful and big. I love poke bowls because they're so colorful and customizable. You get two protein choices with the bowl and we got salmon and ahi. I only had a bite, but it was very fresh, had some spice, and the fish literally melted in my mouth... like BUTTER. So fresh. This place lives up to the hype I've heard. I love the calm, laid-back atmosphere of a marketplace. It did not come off pretentious at all. The food was fresh, which you would hope for when eating seafood. It was definitely on the pricier side. We had 101$ (with tip), which was surprising and not surprising at the same time. I think it was worth it. What an amazing place. I love seafood and this is probably the only place in Phoenix that can actually grill fish. I had the mahi catch of the day grilled with a side of clam chowder. Food was super fresh and fantastic. Clam chowder was loaded with potatoes and goodies, so it's very filling! The kids choices were nice since my little doesn't really dig seafood. And I got the kids poke bowl! It was a sufficient size for a small adult! And super tasty. Only downside is you get NO sauce with the poke bowl unless you ask. I asked. And I got the Korean sauce. This is my go to place for fresh seafood! High quality and fresh, two things that can be hard to find in the desert. The staff is always super friendly and knowledgeable, and the environment is also friendly and cozy. Whether I'm shopping to cook at home myself, or coming to grab a bite, they never disappoint! The grilled shrimp tacos and clam chowder are probably what I eat most. They made the most amazing salmon burger I've ever had, anywhere, but it's not a staple. Chula on Camelback is easy to find, directly next to AJs. Inside is nice and clean, feels very open. They have a large menu behind the counter. You order there and are given a number for your table. They also have a fresh seafood display at the counter. I took home beautiful filets of salmon. They were the best and their higher end salmon at $18 per filet. On to the food! We tried the Confit Tuna sandwich. Very good toasted bread! The tuna had a delicate texture and mellow flavor. The greens and giardiniera were plenty to give it a kick. Comes with a bag of chips I would upgrade sides. $17 Crab Salad Monday special. Large bowl and heaping scoop of crab. There are other veggies and even some spiced up cashews. Went back- I had to do it! This time I got the Hatch chili Tuna sandwich, and my girl friend and her son shared the burrito. I have to say that I really do not like hatch chili, and cannot for the life of me understand WHY these AZ people want to put it in everything!! What a gem! I wish I could try everything on the menu. We came here twice during our week-long trip - once for lunch and the back to grab lox for bagels. Monday night dinner ...DO IT!!! During quarantine, every Monday there is a dinner special. Feeds 2 for $65 (I'd say more like 3-4 or 2 ppl with massive leftovers). You would spend way more for this quality food at a sit down restaurant. Every week a different theme. This week was Moroccan and we were thrilled with the range of offerings. The hardest part about living in the desert is limited (and expensive) access to fresh seafood. Chula to the rescue! They have a crazy-large menu of dishes from fish and chips and poke bowls to sashimi and grilled preparations, made with fresh and sustainable seafood. Full disclosure, it's pricey for a counter service spot. Dinner for two was about $50. Started with the sashimi app ($14) and the smoked fish toast ($8, free with Yelp check in). The 4oz sashimi was nicely presented with a side of sushi rice and a spicy tuna hand roll. I was disappointed the salmon didn't have more flavor but they did well for a spot that isn't a sushi counter. The smoked toast was just okay, not something I'd get again. For entrees, we shared the "best tacos in town", the swordfish (2 for $15, served with chips and salsa) and the cioppino ($18, spicy seafood stew, served with pesto butter toast). I have no idea how these tacos got best of anything- despite the toppings and sauce they were lacking in flavor, but at least they weren't skimpy. The cioppino, however, was very good and a large portion- plenty of shrimp, mussels, and fish, not too spicy for my guy to enjoy and great for our chilly winter visit. Service was friendly, restaurant was clean. I struggled with how to rate this place, considering their high price point and that I was underwhelmed by half of our dishes. I understand that you pay for fresh seafood, particularly sustainably sourced seafood. But as other reviews mention, pricing is on par with Blue Water Grill, which has table service. I appreciate Chula's for what it is and would be happy to see them expand to Vegas (and would likely go often), but I also understand those who consider it overpriced. So it was my second visit to Chula's Seafood and right off the bat their consistency for food, service, presentation and just all around bad ass seafood spot is cemented in my belly!! Seriously from their clam chowder, to the gumbo and sashimi plate the flavors just come to life as the food meets your taste buds. The ceviche avocado tostada was flavorful and provided a light start to the meal. We had a bit of everything including taking home some of their seafood gumbo. Happy Hour on Sunday for seafood was perfect for our appetite and while yes it is on the higher side of a spend, it is worth every penny and then some. On August 5, 2023 my spouse and I both ordered the blackened halibut: it was over charred, over cooked and dry. The brown rice was undercooked and flavorless. The Ceasar salad dressing was watery. It was a bit pricey ($32.00) for four pieces of scallops and two sides even though they were large scallops. Thumbs up for their clam chowder and their sweet beet salad! (Each side is only $3.00 each when adding to a "pick fish entree.") The clam chowder was creamy, flavorful with potatoes and a generous amount of chopped clams. I went in and had the swordfish taco which they bring in from Point Loma (and SD fans know that's the BEST place to get fish from...duh) and it was amazing! Heard a lot about this place and my wife loves seafood. Took her there for lunch. The prices seemed rather high to me, but per reviews I read the food was worth it. She ordered the shrimp burrito and I had the hatch chili tuna sandwich. Burrito was lacking in shrimp and the French fries in the burro didn't make it. The hatch chili tuna sandwich was somewhat tasteless. We also had the clam chowder which was just ok. The bacon in the chowder took over and added too much smoke. The burrito and the tuna sandwich cost $64, we added a glass of wine and draft beer which was an additional $25. I paid way too much for so - so food. Will not go back or recommend this place. Over priced for a quick serve type place. I went with a friend who was wanting to try to lobster roll. Place doesn't have a lot of seats and they want you to order first then sit. We didn't as you could be waiting to sit for a long time. On the daily specials they don't list the price you have to ask. I hate that. While waiting for my friend to finish his order, I saw a woman who ordered the lobster roll. It looked small. I ordered 2 piece fish and chips. It was almost $20 and included slaw and fries. Mine was good but I don't think it was worth the price tag. My friend who had the lobster roll received a small sandwich and it was about $30 with a side of soup. These prices are more than Blue Water grille which is a full service restaurant and also based in California. Compared to Blue Water Grill, I would consider this inferior.
