A small shack near the corner of Randall road, don't be turned off the "dive" feel to it. First time I had it I tried the Lobster Mac and side of calamari. Both were tasty. The last several times I've gotten the shrimp quesadilla and there's a reason I haven't tried anything else since. One of my favorite "handhelds" to get in the area. Quesadilla is very filling with fresh tasting shrimp, bacon, and some other fixings. Comes with a side of fries which are also good. The food is good. The prices are outrageous. This makes it hard to frequent Chum's. I would think that they sell some much shrimp on a daily basis that they could lower the cost a bit. The building is very small, when you walk in there are 4 tall tables with bar stools that seat 5 people each. We were fortunate to be the first to enter the restaurant and quickly a line formed behind us. It is 33 degrees out so it is pretty cold in the restaurant. They have a portable space heater and we made sure to sit at the table closest to it. I had to eat with my jacket on. We ordered 1/2 pound of Calamari, Jumbo Shrimp, a big load of fried smelts, and an order of 8 hush puppies. We only waited about 10 minutes. Based on the other reviews we were thinking it would take a lot longer. We also did not order anything with "lobster" because of the bad reviews for those menu items. We were pleasant shocked at how yummy and temperature hot the food was. It was all cooked to perfection. The calamari was not chewy at all! We highly recommend dining here The guy who took our order, kept asking us how we liked our food and if everything was ok... what a nice guy and we appreciated him asking us too! They serve bottled and canned beverages, wish they had coke product fountain drinks. The gambling area is nice and out of the way. The only complaint is that we should have ordered fries or another filling side because even though we ordered quite a bit and spend $40+ we were still hungry when we left. But we were definitely not cold after eating all that delicious hot temperature wise food! Yummy If we are in the area we will definitely stop back in for a bite to eat! Want to know something funny? I have a shrimp allergy. It seems pretty mild these days but I don't like to tempt fate so I only have a taste once in a while. And so I got to taste one from my wife's order. But I wasn't mad at all, because I ordered the Big Wally walleye sandwich and it was delicious. However my daughter ordered the shrimp quesadilla and it stacked up as my favorite quesadilla of all time, anywhere. I only wish I could eat more shrimp. The place is tiny and kind of dark, but they weren't busy when we stopped in. It has a very nautical theme with an aquarium in the corner. It's funny to tell your kid their meal was grown in that tank. Took a little while to get the food but it was worth the wait. The kids ate well and the in-laws approved. Delicious! I tried a carryout order of their shack platter and was pleasantly surprised by it. I love how generously sized the shrimp was and how it was cooked to the perfect firmness underneath the beer batter, standard breading, and coconut batter. I think that because of the quality of the shrimp, they didn't need to overly salt or season the food -- and even the use of sauces was unnecessary for a delicious experience. The hush puppies also have a nice texture and match the shrimp well. Overall, delicious comfort food and not expensive at all for the generous portion size and quality of shrimp provided. read more

Definitely order ahead then arrive early if you don't want to wait for the food. I tried this place for the first time and had the Big Wally sandwich. It was really good. The sauce they put on the sandwich gives it a nice kick in your mouth but it's not spicy. It's kind of like spicy tuna sauce for sushi. The fries were also really good. I would skip the coleslaw, it was pretty bland. When I ordered, they said 30 min, got there in 20 min and the food was just getting bagged up. You can eat at the restaurant. Not a lot of tables though. I think they mostly do takeout. I would definitely return the next time I am in the mood for a fish sandwich. read more

I was actually excited to et here when I discovered it doing a local search for seafood. Sadly, i failed to meet my expectations. I ordered Lobster Rolls (2)...$23.99 Maine Lobster, mixed with chopped celery and red onions, served a garlic buttered brioche bun with a homemade seafood dressing and Chums Skewers...$6.00 Grilled Andouille sausage & Cajun Shrimp on a Skewer The order took a good 30 minutes to come out and I was hungry. I made the mistake of saying to Bob (my ride) that I judge a place by it's cole slaw. I took a bite and it SUCKED. Very bland. The lobster rolls looked like it was ground lobster and not chunks. And the taste was bland as well. I went to the register to ask for a container for my skewers and dropped it and that was the end of that. What a pleasant surprise to come across a seafood place in East Dundee. Eating in this town was a first for me and I was thinking of Giovanni's shrimp truck on Oahu or the Fish Keg in Evanston, when I was driving here. Anyway, I ordered the coconut shrimp and I just totally loved it. Crispy and light and the shredded coconut was delightful. I had this with the pina colada sauce - and it was a great match. I also enjoyed the chunks of soft and steamy cod, fried in light batter. That was very yummy!! The fries and garlic bread were notable. I do have a suggestion - I would order your seafood by the pound. Although we had two full meals, I kinda felt like there wasn't enough seafood for me. Looking for chumthing delicious to put in your mouth? Just looking at the menu made me pre-chum. The big load of fries were crispy and firm. The lobster roll a creamy delight - a little sweet, a little savory - some Old Bay in there to get you to the finish. Lobster and filet mignon cheeseteak? OMG I'm going to chum. There was no wait for seating and the food arrived quickly compared to the middle of the day. We ordered the beer battered shrimp, clam strips, walleye, fries and coleslaw. I'm going to cut straight to the point. Everything was delicious, flavorful and fresh. I appreciate the use of parsley or cilantro throughout their items. In addition to the tarter and cocktail sauce, we tried the boom boom and shack sauces (my two favorite - flavorful and a nice amount of spice). All seemed homemade. I had frequented their previous location in Dundee and was thrilled to see them move to St. Charles. Much better location and the St. Charles community will thrive on it. It's located on the south side of 64, just east of Randall in the building that used to be Beef Shack. There is limited seating (about 5-6 tables). This place cooks to order, so be prepared for a bit of a wait at times. Rest assured, it's worth it. This was my first stop at the new location. The owner was working the register and he was friendly, helpful, and patient. They had just re-worked their menu, so it took me a minute to adapt my order to the new menu. Ordered the fried clams (1/2 pound) with some of their homemade coleslaw and couple cocktail sauces this time. The clams were hot, tender, and just plain delicious. Their homemade sauces are wonderful. I'm partial to the cocktail sauce, which a tad on the sweeter side. Love it! It looks like they changed up their coleslaw recipe since the last time I was at the previous location. Major improvement! The coleslaw was just the right mix of sweet, tangy, and crunch. Highly recommended. I will be back on a regular basis. I think St. Charles may have adopted them as a new local landmark. Really appreciate unique, independent restaurants like this. read more

This is my second time visiting Chums Shrimp Shack and both times the food is delicious and the staff demonstrates excellent customer service. They seem to be super busy, so I would order ahead and give them plenty of time. They are doing the best they can given their staffing and high volume of order, so give them grace. I have a higher than average expectation of restaurants and Chums absolutely has integrity and consistent experience. We ordered Lobster Rolls, Shrimp Quesadilla, and Shrimp and fish platter. The Lobster roll has plenty of Lobster meat and flavor. The entrees were fairly large portions, and the care in which the Quesadilla was prepared shows love and passion. Thank you! I'm giving a 1 star review for a few reasons...The biggest one being the "lobster" rolls were not lobster! There was maybe a tiny piece per roll. The rest was gross imitation crab, similar to what you'd get in a gas station CA roll. But the place was kinda cute inside. No AC though and no ice. Chums takes fried seafood to another level. The fried cod and beer battered jumbo shrimp was amazing! The breading seemed so light and crispy, it didn't cover up the delicate flavors of the fish or shrimp. The fried clam strips were very tasty, too, but I usually prefer fresh clams. With the thick, crispy skin, it was hard to tell what was really inside. If you were guilty about eating all fried foods and needed to add something somewhat healthy, cole slaw was light and fit that purpose, the fried seafood is definitely the star here. read more

Next time we will have the fries rather than the coleslaw, however. The coleslaw was a good size portion and very fresh, but was lacking in flavor. Very friendly service. We would recommend ordering ahead and taking out. The dining room is very small and on this winter day, the few space heaters were not sufficient to keep the dining room warm. I want Chums to be great. It's just good. My family is split on this subject. My wife loves Chums and I think it's just OK. I find the shrimp greasy and over priced. The lobster roll is a no go. Sides are good. I like that they provide hush puppies covered in power sugar when things get slow and the line gets long. I'm also not a fan of the credit card fee but somehow restaurants seem to be doing that more and more. If you haven't been there try it but be prepared to wait. read more

Wow, today was the first time the family and I tried this place. Chums Shrimp Shack has been on our radar for a while but because of the decent drive we constantly pushed it off till today. Since we're not nearby we placed a pretty big family order. Had a half pound of Coconut Shrimp (regular), half pound of beer battered shrimp (lemon pepper), crab rangoons, 2 surf & turf lobster cheesesteaks, 1 of "The Chum" sandwiches, and a mojito lime wrap. The surf & turf had some pieces of lobster shell (very little) in it when biting into but not a big deal in removing it and hey maybe some people like that? We had a huge order so I'm not dinging them. When it comes to everything just wow, phenomenal. Huge pieces of shrimp and overall the whole family was super happy with the results. Oh also recommend getting some of the homemade sauces (49 cents). The food is good by itself but the sauces take it to another level. Out of the ones we tried our favorites were the Pina Colada (best with coconut shrimp), Sriracha Tartar, Jerk Ranch (my favorite), and the boom boom sauce. Caylis (sp?) brought out some of the pina coloda dip and, truthfully, I could have eaten a bucket of it with a spoon. The best thing by far (at least this time) was the Diablo shrimp. This Reviews is actually for Sunday September 8, 2019, I am a little late writing this review. So my Lady and I had been wanting to try Chums for some time, since I found them surfing on yelp one day. Since my Lady works all the way out in Elgin, IL and we are out in Hammond, IN we tend to see what is by her job so she can at times bring something home and try something new. So to start off, majority of all reviews I read are true, as my Lady confirmed it, the staff is very nice and awesome. So I happen to make out a list, to try and make things easier for folks, so I heard they liked my list lol. sadly only item I was unable to get as it for now is only available on Mondays is the Lobster Mac and Cheese, which we eventually hope to try some time in the future, but what we did order is below. 1 Mojito Lime Wrap 1/2 Pound Coconut Shrimp 1/2 Pound Battered Shrimp 1/2 Pound Calamari 1 Order of Hush Puppies 1 Order of Crab Ragoon Anchors 1 Order Homemade Slaw (8oz) Not to forget an assortment of their fine sauces to try them all and see Which we liked. So I got to say unlike other establishments we have had shrimp from where usually there is grease in the shrimp or some places over fry their foods, I got to say Chums is way better than that. The Coconut shrimp has awesome flavor too, I got to say in our opinion we thought the Pina Colada sauce went well with this style shrimp, and I as well thought the sweet & sour went well also. The Battered Shrimp is beer battered, you can taste the hind ot beer but not over powering as it should not be, we happen to like the cocktail sauce with this style shrimp, but I slightly liked both that and Boom Boom Sauce with that one. Of Course you can either eat the Calamari by it self, or with the Cocktail sauce, Boom Boom Sauce, and or Sweet & Sour Sauce. To be honest even though the Tartar, Sriracha Tartar, Jerk Ranch, BBQ had good flavor, We hardly used them on our dishes. Do not get me wrong they were good, but I guess it just depends what we have them with to fine tune the flavor we are looking for. I do not think we had the Honey Mustard, unsure about this one. the hush Puppies, I mean what can I say they were hush puppies, I sort of waned more, as it has been a while since I had them. the Crab Ragoon Anchors, I got to say, first time I had them, and not the last time, I thought those were truely awesome, now if you have a hard time with cream cheese I will warn they can sit a bit heavy on a person, but unlike chinese places, I have to say these are better than your typical crab ragoon. I am unsure if my Lady used a sauce on hers, but I tried a combination from Sweet & Sour to Pina Colada and both were great. The homemade Slaw, I am unsure if this will define it, but I do not thing the 8oz contained was enough for me, as I love to eat slaw, since there are different ways of making it, I loved how the flavor was there. Some items I did not list in the list as i was surprised to get them, even though we did not order them, and not an issue at all what so ever were there fries, which we both liked, I can say fries can go many ways with all the sauces depending on the flavor or combination of flavors you are seeking. I will note that, I do post photos anytime I eat out, but for some reason we did not put all our food out on a plate when eating since we sort of ordered a lot, so I took photos of eat item on my plate, next time will try to do a better job on photos. I also want to mention we split the wrap the next day, and wow, the Mojito Lime wrap seriously has some good flavors all in it. I believe unless trying something else we will definitely get that wrap again. Overall all this place is if not our #1 to go to shrimp place our #2, if You Guys and Gals were in Hammond you would Definitely be #1, but the distance is too far to make a run out to Elgin and back, so can only do it when my Lady is heading home from work and there is a craving for awesome seafood! read more
