Just as sometimes the best part of a film is its premise, so too sometimes the best part of a restaurant is its atmosphere. For the film, I am thinking of Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde's first full adventure as partner police officers in Zootopia 2. We learn that Agnes De'Snake, Gary De' Snake's late great grandmother, a pit viper, designed and patented the climate-regulating and climate-controlled walls that allow species of all kinds to not just live in Zootopia, but thrive; however, the investor she found to make her vision a reality stole the patent, took advantage of inhabitants' widespread apprehensions about snakes' appearances and their willingness to deem them untrustworthy, and drove all reptiles out of Zootopia based solely on false hysteria. My wife and I could not have been more excited to try the Indian cuisine from London Curry House, located at 7500 Montpelier Rd in Laurel, Maryland. Once I stepped through the somewhat-traditional glass doors, my imagination ran almost as wild as Alice's in Wonderland, confronted first by one of the iconic red phone booths that signal you are in London proper; then by wallpaper full of Indian hosts drawn in animated styles, a prominent collage-like photo of Anthony Bourdain accompanied by a sincere thank you from the restaurant's owners, and another wall depicting a double-decker tourist bus speeding towards Tower Bridge. Unfortunately, our food, while fine, was nowhere near as memorable. Although I loved the sauce for the chicken chili, my memories wandered to another Laurel Indian restaurant's version that teemed with fresh and crispy green onions and sweet peppers, unlike this version, which featured just a few green peppers to balance out the meat. Our onion Kulcha and Kashmiri naan orders would have benefitted had we dined in and enjoyed the side dishes as appetizers. Although my wife really enjoyed her Fish biryani, we were both shocked by how little fish was in the Masala fish & chips. The dish that we were most excited to try was mostly batter. read more

My family placed a large order and it was great! The service was fantastic and our order ready for pick up, and explained the various dishes to us. My order: vegetable malabar and sweet & spicy naan. Delicious! I asked for spicy and they delivered with the perfect amount of heat. It tasted great with the sweet and spicy naan. My parents: tandoori lambs and goat tikka masala. My mom is a PICKY eater because she's a great cook and her sisters can also cook, so she doesn't freely give compliments. She said the lambs were very good. Tender and flavorful. She also said the goat tikka masala had the right amount of heat. My parents ate everything and nothing was left over, so I know it was good. We also got the veggie samosas and garlic naan and onion naan. I wish we had gotten regular naan too. The sweet and spicy naan was my favorite out of the ones we got. Wanted to try them out. Didn't notice it until a few months ago when I was nearby at Kloby's. I added them to my list and finally visited last weekend. I stopped in for a take-out order of chicken tikka masala. My order was ready when I arrived. I was warmly greeted. The place was pretty empty on a Saturday evening. You can choose the level of spice. I did level 6 because I was scared but I should have done hotter. Didn't automatically come with rice so had to order that separately. I didn't like that. My food tasted just ok. The portion sizes were small and for the price, not worth it. I think there were only five tiny pieces of chicken and mostly sauce. My family and I came here on a whim when we didn't know what to cook for dinner and we were so pleasantly surprised to be greeted by Maria who we knew from another restaurant may years ago. She is just as kind and welcoming as we remember her being and are so glad to have reconnected with her. The food was absolutely excellent. We ordered chicken tikka masala, daal tadka, and chicken vindaloo. We also ordered samosas, spring rolls, and cauliflower Manchurian as appetizers. The cauliflower was so good, almost like a buffalo wing! For dessert we had mango ice cream, rice pudding, and gulab jamun. It was the perfect end to dinner. We wanted a quick carry out dinner after a very busy day running around. London Curry was close and fit the bill. Our Indian was tasty and very flavorful. We really liked the 1-10 hotness scale so you can dial in your spice preference. The price was reasonable but the portions were a little smaller than other Indian restaurants in the area. The challenge for London Curry House is the plethora of outstanding Indian restaurants in the area. If we find ourselves in a similar situation we wouldn't hesitate to order again, but for something more we would go to one of the other places in the area. I was looking for a new Indian buffet, and my GPS surprised me, since there's a Montpelier Road in Laurel. Nope, this one's in a shopping strip halfway between Burtonsville and Columbia. The narrow space has veddy British decor, including an iconic red phone booth. I was disappointed by the size of the buffet, only 8 slots with two of them naan and a fried version. No chutney at all, only one dessert. The mains were all chicken, no goat or lamb, with very timid seasoning. The tandoori chicken was dried out and not very flavorful. Yes, I was spoiled by the late lamented Sapphire, but this was just bloody awful, and no bargain at $20. Meh. read more

We ordered delivery from here and it took a while to arrive but the food was really good. The quantity was great. I ordered the non-veg thalli. It came with two different types of chicken dishes and a chickpea curry. Everything was super flavorful. I asked for a level 10 spice but to me it was only a level 3, but the flavors were so good I was fine with it. I also tried the garlic naan and it was a nice size and just an average naan. This is our first visit and it didn't disappoint. The interior is small but we'll decorated with flashes on India and London. I had the chicken tikka masala that was flavorful and the right heat level for me. When ordering your can select how hot from 1-10 which is nice. The naan was warm and delicious. DoorDash review I ordered from here using door dash. It was for pickup and the order was ready ~15-20 mins. Right in time for pickup! I tried the goat biryani spice level 7. It came with a side of yogurt sauce. The rice in this order was not as dry as I generally prefer. The spices were nice but not as spicy as I'd hope. Really good lunch buffet; friendly staff and owners. I was traveling home to Laurel from Columbia, and had wanted to try London Curry House for a while, so I stopped in. The lunch buffet did not disappoint. First of all, the place is small, and the buffet setup is also small. But don't let that fool you; these guys have got game. Their Butter Chicken, Tikka Masala and Palak Paneer were on point, clearly homemade and fresh, with just the right amount of kick. The lentil dishes are full of depth for an umami experience that balances out the spicier stuff. The sauces and raita were fresh and flavorful. The Samosas are huge and the Golub Jamun dessert is unusually good. It was served without the breading and with some rose syrup that made the whole lunch special. Is $18.95 a lot for a lunch buffet? It's more than before the pandemic, but unfortunately, that's where prices are today. Between supply shortages, price gouging from wholesalers, and confiscatory rents for commercial space, every restaurant is changing more, and people are eating out less often. But for my money, when I'm nearby, this is a great choice for a weekday lunch. read more

Really wanted to like this place. I do a lot of British Indian Restaurant (BIR) cooking myself at home, and I wanted a change. I tried the buffet. The chana masala was one of the worst I've had - bitter and almost burnt (and no it wasn't smoked aromatics). Chicken tikka is overly salted in a thin, watery sauce. One of the vegetable dishes tasted like it had a hefty dose of vinegar in it (like no Indian dish I'm familiar with) and another dish, the korma was again thin, with the vegetables seeming like a bag of frozen mixed vegetables and a potato. Not cheap either. I did think the restaurant itself was nicely decorated, tables well spaced, and easy parking. But if you're used to good Indian food, this is not it. read more
