In August of 2016 my fiancé and I had our week long wedding celebration. It was a Colombian-Indian wedding extravaganza. Harish and his staff were so helpful, we honestly cannot say enough great things about them. Harish made himself available for us on numerous occasions as we went to Chutney's to try different dishes and helped us walk through which dishes made the most sense from flavors as well as logistics. When we had feedback about flavors, Harish worked with us to tweak recipes to ensure that everyone would be able to enjoy the food (we had a lot of different dietary and cultural requirements). Harish catered 3 of the most important wedding events for us ranging from a backyard affair for 80 people, the wedding day for 200 people, and the reception for 300. Throughout the entire ordeal of the wedding, Harish was an incredibly calm beacon for everyone, constantly assuring everyone that things will be fine and to not give a single worry about the food. Speaking of food :) The food that Harish and his team prepared was amazing. For Appetizers we had Fish Pakora, Veggie Samosa, Chicken Tikka, and Chaat Papri. Guests could not get enough of the appetizers, and many were surprised that we had food following the Appetizers. So many appetizers, they thought it was dinner. Boy were they pleasantly wrong! For the main course we had a true feast. Goat Curry, Chicken Tikka Masala, Eggplant Bharta, Karahi Paneer, Daal Makhani, Herb Potatoes, Rice, Naan, Cucumber Raita, a mixture of pickles and chutneys. People ate and ate and ate some more. The food was a definite highlight of our wedding and we could not have been more happy with our decision to go with Chutney's as the caterer. For any future catering needs, Harish and his team will be our first call. Brides Notes: For all those embarking on an event planning adventure, I cannot recommend Harish and his staff enough. As a Colombian bride in an Indian fusion wedding, there were lots of things that I needed to know but didn't. This came with massive amounts of stress. However, one thing is for sure. Unlike some of our other vendors, any meeting with Harish not only alleviated any concerns about food and cultural differences, but it just made me feel better about the entire series of events. Something about Harish is calming. I am not simply recommending Harish and his team for any future events, I am telling you that if you've got a high-pressure event, you need someone like Harish to keep you grounded and deliver without qualms on flavor and precision. I know there are cheaper and/or better places, but this is a sentimental favorite. We do take-out pretty much exclusively because the place is so close to us that we can almost yell our order from our front porch, and a couple of entrees plus some orders of naan can feed our family for 2-3 days. Not that it's such an enormous amount of food--that's just how long I'm willing to pick at the leftovers. I usually don't have to wait more than 10-15 min. to pick up food, although they were running a little slow the other day, so I had time to read the newspaper clippings on the wall. There was an article from when they first moved into the old Capons location in Wallingford Center (in '96 for those of you counting, and yes, we've been in this neighborhood long enough to remember that). But they've also taped up a copy of the recent Stranger write-up (http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/Content?oid=148058) which has a bit more of a risque ending than you would normally expect in a restaurant review--certainly more risque than you would expect on most restaurants' walls. I guess it just goes to show that they have a sense of humor. They're moving to the opposite corner of Wallingford Center next month (I don't understand how the WC people run that place), but as long as they keep churning out naan, chicken tikka masala, and lamb saag, I'm sure we'll be calling them up again. read more

I actually went here last summer, but I forgot to ever type up the review! Oops. But, I took notes while I was there, so it's not solely based on memory. We went fairly early on a Friday evening, and there weren't many people there. We sat outside on the patio because the weather was nice. The staff seemed bored, presumably because of the lack of customers, but the service was still kind of cold, which seemed like a weird contradiction. The food was pretty good, although they didn't have some of my favorites, like butter masala or just a basic curry. I ate at Chutney's once quite a while ago for the lunch buffet. But I went last night for dinner and ordered quite a delicious dish, it was the chicken pomegranate curry. It was amazing, came with saffron rice and a little veggie/fruit medley of peppers, apples and mango in some kind of mango sauce. Overall, the dish was pretty sweet, maybe too much for some but I like sweet. I ordered it with 2 stars and it had just the right amount of heat. The service and ambience was par for course, good, but nothing extraordinary. Located right in the heart of Wallingford, there was sufficient parking on Wallingford once you are off 45th. I've come multiple times to enjoy their ridiculously fairly priced buffet- it is certainly one of the finer buffets in the Seattle area. You're given a really large array of delicious food for something like $11, including (at least) tandoori chicken, chicken tikka masala, cucumber salad, raita, naan, pakoras, samosas, meatball curry, grilled vegetables, gulab jamun, aloo gobi, and multiple other vegetarian dishes and deserts. If you have an enormous appetite or simply enjoy eating massive amounts of delicious expertly prepared food, this is a fantastic option. It's also ideal for someone interested in gorging themselves on mostly meat and vegetables. I did a to-go order, so I can't really comment on the service there, but I did appreciate that the person who took my phone order didn't have a thick accent and I was actually able to understand them to make sure my order was correct. Ah, Chutney's... This restaurant is hardly the best Indian food in town, but reaches an /acceptable/ level. The food may not be the sort that inspires amazing reviews, but it's tasty enough and filling. And unlike some other reviewers, I've had nothing but pleasant experiences with the staff there. The slightly-blander food is a good gateway drug for newcomers to curry, and if you ask them, they'll spice it up for you. It rates as one of our most-oft-frequented curry houses not due to the quality of food so much as the sheer bloody convenience of it. Almost no other curry house in the area will deliver (at least not conveniently), and on a night when you have guests over, no one has the energy to really go out anywhere, and you want some curry? I think the saagwala is the best dish they have, but the tikka masala is also good. They have a good selection of vegetarian dishes, but the usual for Indian food. I am writing this review about the lunch buffet, and I know...its a buffet. So even with lowered expectations I found the food to be well...meh. I went with my partner on a day we both had off during the week. There were not many other people there even at 12:30, perhaps scared off by the higher price point than other locations. The interior is nice, but the items on the buffet are lackluster. Being a non-meat eater I could not attest to those dishes, but everything was very bland with no spices available to pump it up a bit. I understand a buffet cannot have ultra seven special star hot curry on it, but still, a little flavor please. The naan bread sat on the buffet for an extended time and become soggy. Fortunately halfway through the meal the staff brought more out. Service was borderline unfriendly, particularly when we opted just for water. I definitely give this place a pass. Go to one of the other mucho better restaurants in Walliingford, or one of the better indian places all around Seattle. read more

I have to confess, my experience was a little puzzling. I've heard a lot of compliments about this place, and unfortunately I didn't get a chance to visit until yesterday. Even that visit was by chance. We only went after we couldn't find parking at another place. To the review. The food itself was average. Not the typical Indian feel that I'm used to. The place felt very "modern". For example, the place didn't have a pungent small that is usually in Indian restaurants. We ordered chicken tikka and the aloo gobi. Both had nice flavors, but not as pungent as I expected. Very mild to say the least. The chicken tikka came out on a sizzling pan that seemed liked fajitas. Not sure if this is typical, but I've never seen this food presentation before at an Indian place. The service was a bit slow, and the aloo gobi was lukewarm when it came out. My review is based on the buffet, as I've never tried the regular menu. I agree with another reviewer that the buffet looks more appetizing than most Indian buffets I've been to, but unfortunately the food is not executed well at all. I found the spices to be watered down--not one thing I tried (out of about 8 dishes) wowed me in the least. A few things were down right difficult to swallow, including the tandori chicken (which had a weird texture to it) and the cucumber salad (way over salted). Another big disappointment was that they don't serve papadam at lunch. I am gluten free, and since I don't eat naan, I rely on papadam as a gluten free option. I don't know why they can't offer this to customers, as all of the Indian restaurants I've ever eaten at offer this at both lunch and dinner. read more

I've been a long time fan of Chutney's. I've shared meals there with dedicated Indian food lovers as well as people for whom it was their first time having Indian (amazing these people exist, right?). Over the years, the deeply-layered, complex and beautiful flavors you would expect have given way to bland and even sticky sweet flavors in dishes where you'd expect savory. Not sure what's happened here, but I *really* hope they go back to their roots (the owner seems like a very nice man with a ton of business savvy, so perhaps they will?!?!). In the mean time, I'll trek over to Bengal Tiger on Roosevelt where I feel the flavors and offerings are more authentic. ps- This is a review of the buffet. I like to go here for the buffet lunch, and have never been for dinner. The pros: Way more variety than most buffets! Lots more vegetables, I enjoy seeing hummus and more salads. Its pretty solid food, I think the deserts are especially good. The cons: Service. I'm a delivery driver for a Postmates and Amazon Flex I have picked up food from this restaurant on several occasions but on February 10th I picked up a to-go order and I noticed that the man was taking credit card payments and preparing food he also had no gloves on and he kept sprinkling some green stuff on top of the food that kept coming out of the kitchen I asked him are you going to keep using your hands and not the spoon to put that stuff on top of people's food he said I'm standing right here that's all I need to do but he was taking credit card payments from people bagging food pulling on his clothes and then putting his hands in the stuff and sprinkle it on top of people's food with no gloves on and I never saw anyone wash their hands eat their will caution you might get stomach or food poisoning read more

The food here is terrible. They had meatballs in a korma type of curry and the meatballs were from a bag. Tandoori chicken was just drumsticks and the chicken wasn't fresh. Some of the sauces for dishes like green beans or potatoes were in the weird sweet sauce and didn't make any sense. There weren't that many dishes to choose from in the buffet, which is good because it was gross. Rasgulla and gulab jamun were both from a can! They had American desserts there but they were also really stale. Management is clearly cheap and trying to take shortcuts. The only reason that this didn't get one star is because the ambiance is decent. Don't waste your money here though. Just get the frozen Indian food from Trader Joe's. A lot cheaper, MUCH better, and more authentic. read more

Went here for a graduation dinner with a large party. Had the full-on dining experience. Appetizer was similar to the typical chips and salsa standard. Honestly no idea what it's called but the chips were large and ultra crisp. The two dipping sauces paired well with the large chip. We ate family style where everyone got a bit of everything. Curry was fantastic, lentils perfectly cooked, the pickled vegetables had fruit mixed in (personal fav!), had 4 types of naan (garlic, plain, yellow bean, spinach), basmati rice was on point. Had 3 types of dessert.. mango pistachio ice cream was divine and not like any other ice cream I've ever had before. Who knew pistachios and mangos paired well together? (Ps pieces of real pistachio in ice cream, choking hazard, sorta soggy, but flavor outweighs the cons). The service was excellent. Waiter took our orders from memory and filled our glasses frequently. I believe the owner (older gentleman) came out to speak to us and to take our orders and serve our dessert. Outdoor seating is an option. There's a lot to the side for parking for patrons. Worst part is traveling to the restaurant because of the small roads and dense population. This is my favorite Indian restaurant I've found in the Seattle area. Always consistent. The cashew masala sauce is awesome! I used to use Amazon Prime a lot for delivery, but if you add special instructions they sometimes get missed, so I would recommend calling the restaurant directly to confirm. One time an order was messed up delivered by Amazon, they personally delivered a replacement, so great customer service. The food at Chutney's Bistro is top notch - my chicken tandoori was sizzling, tender and succulent. The service, though, was not as delectable. Wait staff didn't interact with my party and I very much. Privacy is one thing, but I almost got the impression they were somewhat disinterested in serving us. Atmosphere and environment of the restaurant was pleasing. It's large, well-maintained, and background music wasn't so loud as to be obnoxious. Absolutely love this place! So does my wife. My favorite of all restaurants. I no longer live in Seattle, so rarely get the chance to go there; but I used to be a regular, and I go whenever I'm in town now, though that is rare. I have often invited friends there and have held meetings there. The food is excellent. It's a little Americanized (in a good way as in not so over-the-top spicy-hot as some Indian restaurants), which is perfect to me. I say "in a good way" because the flavors are rich and exotic and wonderful and not being overly spicy means you can experience them and not have them overwhelmed by the taste of peppers. I have never had food I didn't like at Chutneys. The decor is attractive, even elegant, and the location/setting is good. Wallingford Center is a nice place, and the parking is usually available and free. The owner is friendly and courteous and appreciative of patronage in the sense that he has sometimes given something a little extra to express his appreciation. He's refined and, yet, pleasant. I've enjoyed talking with him and with other members of his family in the past. I recommend this restaurant all the time. The lunch buffet cannot be beaten by any of the many Indian restaurants I've eaten at ... either for value or the range of good foods. Not bad/not great. A fairly strong menu. I ordered 5/6 in spiciness. My friend ordered 4. They were both probably about a 1 or a 2. They feature the Thali platter (several items) online, but it's not on the menu. It's listed on the wall that can only be seen from one part of the restaurant. The dal (lentil mix) had little flavor. The Raita (yogurt/spices/cucumber) was much thicker than I've had, as if it had been made with some mayo or yogurt that had most of the water removed. I didn't care for the taste...usually this is something that tastes fresh and cleanses the palate. Service was friendly and polite. We were not rushed with a check. We went in around 6 on a Thursday and had no wait and parking was easy. I would have loved to try their buffet as there are so many flavors with Indian food, but it was not available for dinner. read more

This is by far the best Indian food in Seattle. I have been here dozens of times. My sister works right around the corner from them and orders here 2-3 times a week! They have the best Tiki Masala I've ever had, and you can order the sauce without the chicken ( the sauce is the best part, to DIE for) their naan is delicious. Their Chai tea is amazing, the service is great. The food comes quick, I've never eaten at the buffet but I've heard it's very good as well.
