My friends had been trying to get myself and a few others to Chutney's for ages. I have an OK relationship with Indian food, most of the stuff I have had in my time was just alright and I really don't like buffets. But we went during dinner. I split Matar Paneer with my lady along with an order of naan. We had three star spicy-ness. This was not spicy at all. The food was definitely tasty, I will give them that. Very good paneer. Their naan was tasty as well. The service was alright. This is where they loose a few stars. We were dining with six people. Four of us were served dishes that required rice to be eaten (they give you a bowl of the matar paneer for example and you add it to the rice yourself). They set out a medium sized dish of rice for the ENTIRE TABLE to share. This rice provided about one large spoonful of rice per person. Definitely not enough to eat our entire meals. I will admit that one person who did not need rice took a spoonful, but even with that spoonful we would not have been able to finish our dishes with the rice provided. So my girlfriend asks one of the servers if we could have some more rice. Instead of refilling the plate, they bring out a small dish of rice. We split this up among ourselves and we're able to finish our dinner. We then receive the ticket. We are a little amazed to discover the ticket is almost $18. Our entree was $10 (which we shared), we had one order of naan for $1.95. Where was the rest of this coming from? Why, they charged us for more rice of course. $2.95 for jasmine rice. The server was unapologetic and no one had explained to us that we would be charged for more rice. I would feel a lot better if someone had at least mentioned they would charge us. Even most cheap-o Thai restaurants don't charge you for more rice. Especially when it's pretty much required to eat the meal. Basically this place is out to nickel and dime the hell out of you. Makes sense, based on the other reviews asserting that the servers receive no tips because they all go to the owner. I will consider dining here in the future because the food was good, but it's overpriced for what it is. And this whole incident annoyed me quite a bit. read more

Good service. Good curries. For a place that is called Chutneys, it was strange that only a very tiny thing of mint and tamarind chutney mixed together came out with the bread. We had to buy chutney to go with our bread for a dollar something per flavor. We also had an extra beer on the ticket, but they took care of that and took it off for us quickly. read more

Nope nope - only recommended if ur starving and are craving to have any kind of Indian food - most curries on the menus look the same with obvious difference in color if it's a spinach dish - we've had better naans - better paranthas for better price and frankly even if it was expensive, I would be ok if the food was super awesome!! We came here to pre-funk for the Black Party. Thinking we were going to be paying $30-$40pp we were pleasantly surprised. This trendy family ran operation has great service, delicious food and stiff drinks! Happy hour is weekdays 4-8p! We had their tandoori chicken that was succulent, moist and plan DELICIOUS! I was worried that because it was served on a sizzling platter. Did not see an inch of grease! We mixed the chicken with the Spinach dish and their Indian yogurt.... My mouth is watering! We also tried the Garlic Na'an, nothing special, truthfully too much food so skip the Na'an! Order one plate to share! or know your taking home food for tomorrow! OH YUM!!! THE BUFFET LUNCH TODAY WAS MOST EXCELLENT! LOCATION: In Wallingford, it's close to the U-District. I went there today with my cousin. We went there from the UW and ventured into Wallingford. PARKING: It's in an old school building turned into a little shopping center. So, they had their own parking lot. SERVICE: We went for the buffet lunch after 1:30, so we got seated immediately. There were only 2 other tables of people there, so we got good service. QUALITY: I don't know what we ate, but it sure was good. I recognized the rice & chicken. But, everything else, I was unsure what it was called. Neither vegan nor vegetarian, so I had to ask what had eggs and dairy in it. Overall, the food tasted good, even though I didn't know what it was. There were a lot of vegetable and fruits available. BOOZE: They had a full bar, but we were going back to campus, so we didn't order any booze (though I normally would have). ATMOSPHERE: The place is pretty cool with Pakistani and Indian decorations and music going on. My cousin was saying that the music was ...Bali-wood...which added to the atmosphere. I love Chutneys! They have the best mango lassi in all of Seattle. Perfect garlic naan! The pomegranate chicken, coconut matar paneer and the chicken tikka are some of my favorites. The lunch buffet is great as well. Tons of delicious food and very reasonably priced. I always leave the lunch buffet very satisfied, overly full and super happy. Best Indian food in Seattle. The service is always wonderful. Amazing vegetarian/vegan/organic options as well. This was the first place in Seattle where I felt like a regular! A bit pricy, but the portions are big so you're basically getting 2 meals out of it. Plus the food is so good it's worth it. While you can have it delivered (through an outside app service) or take it to go, the best experience is to dine in. The staff will really take care of you and the restaurant has a great ambiance. On a chilly day, when the power was out, Chutney's was a perfect place to warm the bones in the beautifully bricked, cozy interior. We did the lunch buffet. It is an all-you-can-eat affair, as I suppose most buffets are. It was 2pm on a Sunday, and it was not clear if the buffet was a weekend only option. The food was decent, and, obviously, plentiful. The chicken Tikka Masala was a highlight, and the Daal was good, too. I would go back for the buffet, cuz I like to eat. Well, we wanted to go to a Greek restaurant down the street, but it was closed for renovations or some such thing. We normally like Indian food, but Chutney's was just mediocre, in my opinion. The service was not very friendly, which is truly disappointing, the naan was burnt, and the lamb that I had was not very inspiring. The interior is amazing, but unfortunately the food is extremely bland. Even the veggies and rice taste like something you'd grab at the Safeway Deli. The only thing with any flavor ended up being the meat balls, and if you're going to have that why not go head to an Italian place? I took my friend here for her birthday dinner, since she has a love for Indian food. I had heard great things about this place. The place was very clean and parking was a breeze. The service was okay, a bit awkward, they didn't smile too much. The food was rather disappointing. I ordered the mixed grill, this was suppose to come with an assortment of chicken lamb and shrimp. It was mostly chicken, a few pieces of lamb and one piece of shrimp on a bed of peppers and onions. The meat had a funny taste and was pretty dry. I also ordered some Naan which was pretty standard, the Kulcha Naan was very good. My friend ordered Lamb Rogan Josh a specialty lamb dish, which was too sweet which came with a salad that was equally as sweet. They were nice enough to bring a free dessert with a birthday candle in it, I think it was cheesecake but I wasn't sure, it was so dense it was hard to swallow and had an unsettling texture and flavor. Sighhhh, I have had wayy better Indian food for less elsewhere, this place was just blahh. read more

I am a long time patron of Chutney's. In terms of the food quality, I have only praise. The flavors are there and I enjoy all their dishes. The ambience is nice. But, there is much room for improvement in other areas of the business. I usually do takeout and they have managed to screw up my order twice in a row. The first time, I called them and they issued me a refund for the item they failed to include in the order. The second time, it wasn't worth the drive over there to correct it. Perhaps you're more flexible, but I expect the order to be correct, especially because I tip. (No more tipping for me.) Very disappointed they seem to struggle with takeout orders lately. Given how much they charge, I am dropping another star for lack of customer service. Maybe Yelp will help get management's attention. Will update if things improve. For right now, I would encourage anyone ordering here check the order to avoid a surprise. read more

Have not been to Chutney's for a longgg while, ever since they relocated from the front of Wallingford Center to the back and raised the price of the buffet menu from $6.95. (Yes, folks! It used to be $6.95!) The buffet menu has expanded since my last visit years ago. There are now more deserts and vegetarian options. They've kept the old favorites, like the meatballs and the tandoori chicken. The food was plentiful, although there weren't a lot of diners. The outdoor patio is also nice on a nice sunny Seattle day. The quality of the food might be a little off from before, but I see it's the same owner - this tall, statuesque and regal Indian man. The meatballs are a little smaller than I remembered and both the sauce and the flavor were different. I can't say any of the food stood out for me. It was just OK, and not a bad price for a buffet. Service was attentive; my water glass was constantly full. Indian is not always my fav but will be back for sure. read more

I had visited the restaurant over the weekend and had a terrible experience. The staff is very rude and start with abusing us when gave feedback that the chicken was overcooked and rubbery. He tried to assault one of my friends by snatching his phone when he was going to record what was happening. After soon threatening him of calling the police he realised he was at fault and apologised profusely and said that the food is on the house. We were persistent on not getting free food we pushed to pay the bill but he wanted to remove all evidence we had come to the restaurant and deleted the bill from the system. I hate this place! But i keep coming back. I can't even look at the servers anymore or I get irritated. They all stand and watch Indian soap operas in the bar. You get service during the commercials. But I love Indian food! And it's walking distance from my home! I should just order in from Jewel of India on 45th. But I prefer to go out most of the time. I'm always a little torn about Chutney's - it's so convenient and nice looking, but in the end, you can get cheaper Indian food elsewhere of similar quality. I have heard that they have a pretty famous lunch buffet, but I've only been able to go there for dinner. Dinner seems very classy, except for the TVs overhanging the bar and the service is good - just watch that you don't get put in one of the drafty areas of the restaurant. They have a variety of mango drinks (alcoholic and not) to get you started on your meal, as well as a decent looking wine menu. Getting started with your meal, I have found some of the more creative dishes to be hit-or-miss, but the standby Indian fare is pretty decent. Their cashew dishes in particular are unique and I haven't seen something like them anywhere else, and they are probably why I will go back again. Cashew masala with paneer? Oh yes. In addition, they use colorful vegetables as sides for a pleasing presentation. However, the price is a little high for traditional dishes, and the flavor for most of the dishes does not justify it. However, I do think this is a place you should check out and decide on your own - mostly because everyone has different opinions on all Indian restaurants, so why not go eat at them all? Bathroom: 2.5 stars. This bathroom is a pain to get to, especially in the winter - you have to leave the restaurant and go into the mall... walk past the waiter stand, into the hall way and down aways into the no-longer-warm air. The bathrooms will be on the right. However, while you're down that way, check out the pictures on the left of the hallway that show the building when it was a Seattle public school. read more

Absolutely LOVE their lunch buffet ($8.95 per person)! Great variety in the dishes. From chicken masala to spinach paneer to freshly sauteed vegetables to goat curry... all very delicious. I don't like how the naan is also part of the buffet area because when naan sits out for too long it gets hard and crumby not soft and fluffy. Other buffets I've been to will serve your naan fresh when you request it. It's also "cute" and unique that they have metal lunch trays that compartmentalize the different curries so they don't all mix together and become "one in the same" but make each dish as distinct and unique as the other. read more

The Indian curry meatballs and chicken are fantastic as well as the freshly grilled veggies. The Nan bread is always delicious as is the exotic rice and mango puddings. My mouth waters thinking about it! Chutney's is very clean and the service is good. I wished I lived closer because I could eat there at least 3 times a week. Chutney's is an usual restaurant. The space has the feel of a large cocktail lounge minus the barflies and happy hour crush. Not quite what I expected for an Indian restaurant. We went primarily to try the organic menu. Nice to see a restaurant putting an emphasis on that. The food wasn't very memorable though. It certainly wasn't bad, but the flavors didn't really pop, the portions were fairly small and the prices (understandably) higher for the organic fare. We ordered our dishes in the medium-spicy range, which apparently means not spicy at all. I've tasted yogurts with more heat than the curry we got. Service as others have noted is... minimal. I went to Chutney's for brunch today with my husband and our neighbor. I am giving them 4 stars because I have no self control when it comes to buffet style eating and I had to flag down a staff member to get the restroom code. This is quite possibly the best Indian Buffet I have ever been to. The staff was friendly - didn't make us feel pressured to leave even though we stayed a good 3 hours eating & talking. The buffet selection has a good mix of all types of Indian Cuisine such as Tandoori, Dahl, Tikka Masala, Palak Paneer, roasted Vegetables, fresh fruit. Lots of options even for the pickiest of eaters (me) The restaurant is clean and we were seated immediately without having made reservations. When you go in - it's nice, and the waitstaff are great. You're excited about the organic menu, but the fried garbanzo cracker they serve with chutney is burnt... Your garlic basil naan tastes reminiscent of the spices it's labeled to have, but it's also burnt some. Your organic dishes, requested to be 3 stars, come back bland, NO SPICE!!! Your basmati rice is under cooked and crunchy in some bites. This was my first time here. I was very disappointed. I came on Nov 19th, around 7:30pm. The place was not busy, so there isn't any kind of excuse for poorly made food. The waitress did not write our order down, and I feel that contributed to the mix-up about spices. I will not go again unless someone else goes - and pays. Which thankfully my date did. 51.00 was not worth the food, if you base price on quality. Chutney offers the finest Indian food in Seattle. The lamb vindaloo is beyond amazing, but usually our family asks owner Harish to bring out whatever he thinks we'll like. We're never disappointed. Chutney's provides a wonderful selection of organic meals and accommodates gluten-free customers. I'm living in south Florida and whenever I'm in Seattle, I make a pilgrimage to Chutney. It's even better than Indian food in London. I recommend sitting outside on the patio in the summer. It's a relaxing and interesting environment and great for large parties and families. Ultimately, I wish I could teleport Chutney to unfortunate south Florida, but since I can't I'll have to settle for it several times a year. read more

This was my first time ordering food from this place so I went with my Indian food "test" dishes: veggie samosas, chicken tikka masala, and plain naan. I was actually surprised by how good everything was, since my expectations for Indian food in Seattle aren't super high. The samosas filling was soft and flavorful, and the outside was crispy but not too oily. The chicken tikka masala had tender chicken (two or three pieces were a little tough/overcooked but the vast majority was just fine) and the sauce was spiced at the level I ordered (4 out of 6); hot enough to make you pay attention but not so hot you couldn't taste the food or needed to follow each bite with a gulp of lassi to put out the fire. The rice was good, not amazing but no complaints. The naan was enormous(!) and perfectly baked. The main dish portion was also really big and there was so much rice - I had nearly three meals from the chicken tikka masala. I'm so happy to have a good Indian restaurant nearby and I'll be back to try other dishes. read more

I've been going Chutney's in Wallingford for their weekend brunch for over 7 years now and in my opinion, they have above average Indian cuisine, makes me crave it from time to time. The brunch is $9.95 a person, a great deal for such a large selection, you get American breakfast fare along with a great selection of Indian food. There's this green pepper, zuchinni, onion and carrot salad they make there that just tastes awesome. I'm not a salad person, and I always get 2 helpings of this stuff. Tandori chicken is good and moist, and their curry is creamy and tasty. They've recently moved into the other side of the Wallingford Center and the space looks much better. It's a bit dark, but it looks contemporary with their grey walls and exposed brick scheme with some chrome touches. read more

However the service is quite bad (the servers actually complained about having to be there while serving us), and the prices are high for what you get if you're ordering off the menu. They also don't give you much bread or naan, then charge a ridiculous amount for any extras (like $2 for one little piece of naan, $3 for a minuscule bowl of rice). Even though their food is good, you can get food that is equally good or better at much more friendly, reasonable places. alright, I did delivery so I really cant comment on the wait staff. What I can comment on is how amazing and yummy and fresh this food is. I literally just finished eating. I grabbed the (mild) Chicken with Spinach (aka: saag) (medium) Shrimp Masla (medium) Eggplant Bharta Panner stuffed Nann Let me just say it was great to order from somewhere where the mild still had flavor and spice without burning the eff out of my mouth, and the medium had such a great flavor along with a true medium heat. The chicken saag was great, super creamy spinach with notes of ginger and a good spice layer on the chicken. It was cubed, but moist and soft. The Eggplant dish was superb, nice thick consistency with great chunks of veggies. Once again the spices were right on and the flavor was perfect. The Shrimp Masla was probably the best I have ever had. You could really taste the different components in the sauce. The shrimp was the freshest I have tasted ANYWHERE in Seattle. The Naan also had really good flavor, not too much cheese, and soft. The ends were a little on the dry side but then again it was delivered, and overall tastier then any other indian food delivery I have had. I would have no quams about eating at this restaurant bad reviews aside, just for this tasty tasty food. Will definitely order again. read more
