The food tastes great. There are more layers of flavor than many other local Indian restaurants. I particularly enjoy the saag paneer for the smooth richness of the cheese and the little pops of ginger in the sauce. The eggplant bharta is wonderfully smokey. A tip for takeout: get dishes in multiples of two. They don't add extra rice for an odd numbered order and you'll run short. read more

We (as a party of three) went here for dinner last night. The place had a nice decor and was not crowded. We got settled into a comfortable booth and ordered drinks - a masala chai, a mango lassi and a salt lassi. The mango lassi is worth recommending - tasty and not overbearingly sweet. The folks serving were polite and frequented our table just the right number of times. We ended up ordering a kadhai paneer, a dal makhani and tandoori rotis. The food arrived without too much wait time. The paneer and dal were both very tasty - spice levels are not a surprise, the flavors are good and most importantly, none of it was greasy. Definitely would recommend. However, the food quantity was a bit on the lower side and did not suffice for us (three moderately hungry adults). This made us order what I would say was probably the only bad experience of the night - a Vegetable Jalfrezi. The Jalfrezi ended up being a few random vegetables (under-cooked cauliflower florets? - yuck) sauteed in what tasted like tomato ketchup - weirdly sweet, tangy and very very artificial tasting. Needless to say, this went largely untouched (and un-boxed) as we left the place shortly after. read more

This place is a total chop shop! My buddies come in here all the time and the owner gets upset at them for calling in advance just to find out what type of Chicken will be served at the lunch buffet. Last time they were in there the owner was giving mean looks and so our friends said "we wont be back in here", the owner replied "Good!" Awful customer service. We visited for Christmas eve. We like to go somewhere for Christmas eve that feels a little "special," and Chutney's definitely fit the bill. We had samosas and cocktails to start - the samosas were excellent, great spices, very full flavored. The cocktails were fine, although I think I will try a different one next time or just have a basic drink. Most of the cocktails were fruity, and I am not a huge fan of fruity cocktails, but they did go well with the food. For dinner I had lamb tikka masala and hubby had a grilled lamb chop dish. He loved his, but honestly I liked mine better (and it was a few dollars cheaper, which is always awesome). The sauce was amazing. Sometimes I find the flavors of Indian food kind of muddled, but this sauce was well-rounded, with both a spicy and a creamy/rich quality. We also had spinach naan, which was great - charred and flavorful. The service was unobtrusive but always there when you needed them. Overall it was a great experience and we will definitely be back. read more

I'm afraid I'm going to have to side with Omar here... this place is overpriced for food that is not great. The meal started with decent poppadoms and a fairly tasty dipping sauce--though I've never, ever had a bad one of these anywhere... Then somewhat downhill: we got the Saag Paneer and the Chicken Vindaloo. The saag was average and I thought the portion was fairly small for the price. What awaited in the other dish, however, was pure, runny disappointment. The vindaloo should be ashamed to call itself that. The chicken was bone dry and couldn't be masked by the light, not-spicy (despite having ordered a "4" on the 5-point heat scale) and bland. *sigh* Maybe I too am biased, but this was a non-starter. read more

The meatball masala really brought it home for me (and a whole entire star to this review)! My most recent experience at the buffet on New Years Day made me question whether or not to come back. I will swear by the meatball masala. It's something strange sounding and had it not been integrated within the buffet option I would have never tried it. It's so WONDERFUL!! The sauce had perfect consistency, meatballs were tender and juicy with subtle flavor and with the rice, I made up my mind that I would in fact order it as a regular dinner option. Here, the tandoori chicken is succulent and not too dry. From experiences elsewhere, I had sort of given up on tandoori. I'm just glad I gave it one more go and it was here at Chutneys b/c it changed my perspective. Damn delish! I noticed the owner at the door, greeting several guests with hugs and hearty handshakes. The music was light, flowed well with the dining room and was set at a seemingly perfected level of volume. It is spacious with great seating that feels uncrowded. As per service, it is slow and lacking. On New Years, I had ordered a coke with the buffet and no one ever asked me (as many times as they had come by to refill the water), if I would like another. My friend Amanda ordered an iced chai tea and the server came back with a hot tea and said she could put ice in it!? A lot of the lamb dishes seem bland. The buffet itself is not spicy at all so if you do like a little heat with your meat, you may fall to disappointment. One last notation that I realized after leaving is that when we arrived we saw a sign just outside the door stating that the buffet was around $8 but (aside from the coke), we were each charged a little over $10. It wasn't a huge deal but I did have an active thought as to why they would place the sign outside if it was false advertising for the cost of the buffet? read more

This is a review of Chutney's weekend lunch buffet: It's been several years since I have been to this Wallingford location. The decor has changed, more upscale, which makes for a more comfortable dining experience. And when we left at about 2:30 the lunch buffet was still going: the extended weekend hours is a nice thing. The food, however, was mediocre. There was really two dishes with chicken (1) a tandoori chicken, hard, tasteless, and smothered with slivered green peppers and onions, as if to either compensate or mask the chicken and (2) a bone-in chicken korma. Plus the usual solo garbanzo bean/lentil/potato (all in mild nondescript curry sauces) dishes, etc. dishes. But no spinach souffle. One beef meatball in sauce. And only one really interesting dish with slabs of tofu. But fried eggs? And hard-boiled eggs forlornly sitting in a brackish bath of dark brown liquid?! I didn't touch these. The naan bread did not come fresh to the table; it was part of the buffet, semi-warm, and not very appetizing. Not for a terribly discriminating pallette. Not very friendly service. And at $10.95, not a great deal, either. Too bad that the lower Queen Anne Chutney's changed ownership: they had the best Indian lunch buffet in town. read more

This place is great because they have an organic menu. That's really key to our family and we're glad to spend the extra $ to enjoy healthy delicious Indian food. We especially like their Saag Paneer and Eggplant Bharta. Our son loves their chikken tikka masala and this is one of the few ethnic restaurants he craves. When we order to go they also let us bring our own containers to fill so we aren't using to go containers we'll throw away. read more

I really wanted to love this place since they make a point of advertising that they serve organic food. But... We went tonight, on a whim - it was about 7pm on a Friday night. The place wasn't packed at all, so we didn't feel badly about parking our 1 year old's stroller next to our table. The service was meh. We didn't find anyone there to be all that warm or friendly. We waited a considerable amount of time for our server to come by and take our order - she took care of another table that came in AFTER us, first. (They sounded like they were regulars, which doesn't excuse ignoring other customers who could turn into regulars.) The owner came out a couple of times and by then, a couple more tables had filled up. He stopped by to talk to make chit chat & ask how everyone was doing at EVERY SINGLE TABLE except ours. The only communication he had with us was to ask if he could move our stroller. (Sure, we had no problem with that.) Is it because we had a kid with us? I can't see why that would have put him off since our child is and was VERY quiet & well behaved. The food was kind of blah. I had the mango chicken and my husband had the lamb chops. We got the shrimp bits as an appetizer. The shrimp was chewy and bland. The lamb was dry and my mango was also dry and had an artificially sweet flavor. There was just no depth in the flavors. Nothing impressive and nothing I'd go back for. I would have been encouraged to give them another try if anyone working there seemed like they cared, but, alas, no one there made *me* care at all. read more

A nice ambiance and music and it's all for $8.00 There is no spice or heat (heat level -00) at the buffet leaving it bland but still had some good flavor. A good spot for someone starting out with Indian food. I was disappointing that there was no shmoleses that I was craving and with the name like Chutney bistro there was no chutney disapointing that My favorite thing is mango chutney with Schmoleses.(spell check) and they did not have any at the buffet. Just an update to highlight two items we order often and LOVE: 1. The tomato soup. Harish and his chefs add cilantro and this just adds such a nice depth of flavor to the tomato soup that it brings it to a whole new level of taste-buds-singing deliciousness. 2. The mango lassi. Good lord, this is one of those foods/drinks that if I had to live on it alone for the rest of my days, I could, and happily would. WOW. They make an amazing lassi here. read more

Good service. Good curries. For a place that is called Chutneys, it was strange that only a very tiny thing of mint and tamarind chutney mixed together came out with the bread. Nope nope - only recommended if ur starving and are craving to have any kind of Indian food - most curries on the menus look the same with obvious difference in color if it's a spinach dish - we've had better naans - better paranthas for better price and frankly even if it was expensive, I would be ok if the food was super awesome!! I love how they have organic option. However, you do pay a big price for the dish. This was my first organic Indian restaurant. The food was delicious, but my eggplant bharta was different from the traditional bengan bharta. This version was more tomato/chili-based. I guess the traditional ingredients couldn't be sourced organic. Still excellent. I wish the prices were better, but I understand with it to cover the organic ingredients. We sat outside on this warm Sunday night by the fountain. It was peaceful. The indoor seating looked very nice, too - very classy. read more

Chutney's Bistro is a place I had long wanted to try but never got around to...until tonight. Me and the GF went there, and things started off right, place was comfortable, and the crackers and chutney they brought to the table was ok. From there it was down hill. The Keema Naan was dry and lacked the lamb it was supposed to contain in any measurable quantity. The masala was lack luster and lamb tough. The spinach and chicken dish was the highlight which the GF thought was good. Sad to say the experience was subpar. It wasn't two bites into dinner when the GF was saying it wasn't as good as Saffron Grill or Taste of India. By the end of the meal we were in the "won't be coming back" camp. Had to try it again. It had to be an Indian Buffet, and I was so close by... So: This time, the vegetarian options were really great. I was surprised at how litte mint chutney I used; didn't want to add to (or mask!) any of the flavors! However, service (again) was pretty dismal. I would recommend not even thinking of coming in the last 1/2 hour of the buffet. I arrived at 2:36pm. There was only one table of diners. The staff was right next to me, serving themselves. I didn't mind that at all! What I did mind was that, just like last time, I had to go out of my way to get some chai, and again for the refill. I gave it 3 stars instead of 4, 'cause, based on the website, I had thought I'd be getting a buffet for $7.95, not a "brunch" for $10.95. read more

Been to many Indian buffets. Let's name them. Mayuri in Bellevue. Spice Route. Taj Palace. India Bistro (Roosevelt and Ballard). Qazi's. Bengal Tiger. And some other place in Bellevue I forgot the name of that was terrible. Chutneys here in Wallingford ranks high because of the cleanliness and quality of the buffet along with taste. Everything they did here was right. The only thing missing is the damn butter chicken. I'd happily trade the over abundance of grilled veggies that are quality they have stacked so high. I'll have to go to Taj Palace for the quality buffet butter chicken now. :( Seriously bring the butter chicken. And to save people time. The best flavor/consistency(throughout time)/variety/quality is Taj Palace. After that is chutneys/spice route then Mayuri then Qazi's then India bistro both in Roosevelt and Ballard. Actually Ballard is the worst. Bengal tiger was very forgettable. From what I remember they had a mediocre seafood stew there in their buffet. If they focused on the quality of their butter chicken it wouldn't be an issue Take it from me. I eat Indian buffets around 5 times a month if not more so I know what I'm talking about. Judge all buffets by their butter chicken quality then you'll know. If you're a restaurant reading this I know you're trying to get rid of the excess food but do make it tasty, clean and presentable. The entrees are a bit bland, but I understand they have to walk the fine line between Indian spicy and Americanized. After I was seated, I never saw my server again. She went to the bar area to watch tv. Pros: Good selection, clean, nice ambiance. Cons: Service (is anyone here?), food: tasty but a bit bland. In fairness, after I filled out a comment card in my guest check booklet, a gentleman whom I presume was a manager or owner came over, re-filled my soda and thanked me for my feedback. Ah, sweet, sweet, Indian food. As I've yelped elsewhere, Bombay Grill used to be my favorite Indian restaurant until they changed up their menu and took out the bits I liked best. Well, Chutney's is apparently owned by the same people and still features all of the food that I used to love so well from Bombay Grill. And the taste? Fantastic. Exactly like Bombay Grill used to be. I've only gotten carry-out, by the way, and the portions are huge; they provide more rice than any other Indian restaurant I've ever encountered. Their paneer pakora is great and the 'asparagus, onions, and mushrooms' remains my top-most favorite dish. The only complaint I have is that they don't deliver and I'm a lazy, lazy man. Luckily, I live close by enough to make it just a few minutes' drive to reach paneer nirvana. read more

I HATE buffets.... except when it comes to Indian food. I don't eat Indian food often but when I do, I can never just pick one thing. This place has a great lunch buffet at a very reasonable price. Every type of food I had was incredibly delicious. The restaurant is very clean and nicely decorated. Not traditional Indian but more modern appeal. This place is the BOMB! I randomly stopped by here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. I believe their lunch buffet was 11.95. It's more expensive on the weekends. The variety is awesome! I went with a friend who's vegetarian and she had so many options to choose from. The staff was friendly, the buffet was clean and organized. The dessert options were awesome and they also had orange juice which is sort of random, but delicious nonetheless! I will be back. read more

The bistro is under 'new' management so I think many of the nay-sayers should try it again. Very low key but, upscale joint with an excellent menu and very tasty food. The curry was just right, not too thick and not too soupy. We ordered both curried mussels and curried lamb. The mussels were fresh and not at all chewy and the lamb came braised to perfection. The Na'an was very tasty and really brought the meal together. Besides an okay meal experience the waitstaff was kind and very attentive. Not a very stand out place, but worth a try. read more

My fiance and I have gone to Chutney's several times now, and every time I am more impressed than the time before. The owner couldn't possibly be nicer, and he puts a very strong emphasis on customer service. When my fiance's dish wasn't what she ordered, they had two people come and apologize (completely unsolicited, we didn't make a big deal about it at all) and make it right immediately. My friend knew we were going there that night, to celebrate our engagement and they called the owner and paid for our meal. He walked over to us and congratulated us and gave us complimentary drinks. Tonight, we ordered delivery from there and the delivery driver recognized me and said some very kind words. This is an instance in which great customer service highlights great food. Every time I try to eat here, something goes wrong. for some anonymous reason, this restaurant is closed between the approximate hours of something like 3-5, so thats WTF strike one. and they only deliver if your order is over 30 dollars. I had visited the restaurant over the weekend and had a terrible experience. The staff is very rude and start with abusing us when gave feedback that the chicken was overcooked and rubbery. He tried to assault one of my friends by snatching his phone when he was going to record what was happening. After soon threatening him of calling the police he realised he was at fault and apologised profusely and said that the food is on the house. We were persistent on not getting free food we pushed to pay the bill but he wanted to remove all evidence we had come to the restaurant and deleted the bill from the system. Do not go to this restaurant if you value your stomach and your safety. read more

Ehhhhh. Not my favorite Indian food, not even a little bit, not even close. It's pricier than other Indian food restaurants, the na'an not so good, almost salty, the service ridiculously slow. The only redeeming factors I can think of is that it's very clean (it has been recently remodeled), seating is typically quick and parking is typically available since it's in Wallingford Center. So convenient if you want something you don't have to search for parking for, you could get a fantastic dessert at Trophy Cupcakes right upstairs, but not really worth the cost. read more
