You can't go wrong with a Margarita, queso and guacamole. But I always find all other food items mediocre. And the service is lacking. "Could I please have a spoon?" "Could I please have a spoon?" Could I please...." If I want good Tex Mex I go elsewhere but in this part of Austin I'm lost. The large Chuy's sign called out to us so what's a car load of starving perople to do? I ate dinner in the Chuy's bar this evening. Why the bar? Well, the wait for a table (6pm on a Tuesday) was 35 minutes. I like to waste my time on the internet, not waiting for Mexican food! This is more of a family place, so seats at the bar were readily available, and you can eat a regular dinner there. The bar is very close to the nacho area, too. Nice! This Chuy's has way more kids than the other Chuy's I've visited, but the hostesses seemed very accommodating and all the kids seemed to be having a good time. I don't have any kids, and only a tiny baby was in our party (no, we did not put her carrier on the bar), but I thought it noteworthy anyway. The atmosphere was like any other Chuys--festive and slightly loud. The food was like any other Chuy's--standard Tex-Mex. Chips and salsa were excellent, as usual. I liked the queso quite a bit, too, especially since it was free! My friend enjoyed the beef fajitas, but the portion looked a little small for the price. I ordered fish tacos ($9), and they were okay. The tortilla seemed homemade and really fresh, and the sauce on the taco was creamy and delicious, but but there was a lot more breading than there was fish. I like meatier tacos. The rice and beans were excellent though. Service was a little spotty. The bar was busy, but I felt like since we were sitting right in front of the guy we could have gotten our orders taken a little sooner, plates cleared sooner, a box brought sooner, etc. I felt a lot of "dead time" which meant I got to visit with my friend, but it also meant we were taking up a seat someone else probably wanted. There were some screw-ups with the bill, too. I got it resolved, but it burned some time and was a little awkward. The regular waitstaff may be better about things like that though. Southwest Chuy's seems like a reliable choice for a family dinner. If I lived down south, I'm sure I'd be a regular. I probably wouldn't get the fish tacos though. read more

Who knew that the new Chuy's in South Austin would be one of the hardest restaurants to get into in Austin? The first time I came here, was 8pm on a Wednesday night and the wait was 45 minutes. Came here on a Monday, right at 6 pm and there was an hour wait. Luckily, Chuy's does a few things right to make the wait not so bad. * Lots of outdoor seating * a full bar * and free chips, salsa and queso Once we stocked up on chips, dips and drinks, the wait was bearable and turned out to only be 30 minutes. A very pleasant surprise. The wait for the food was worse than the wait for the table. I suspect this new location still has a lot of kinks to work out. This Chuy's is just like every other one, with basic Tex-Mex food. One of the things they do best is jalapeno ranch dip! read more

I get the Friday HH call and this week it's Chuys on William Cannon. I think to myself "Self, we've not yet tried this place... give it a chance." I am just ridiculous sometimes. I call up two more friends and share the secret location. Being that several friends are already there, we get to sit right down when we finally arrive. I wait 30 minutes for our waiter to take our drink order. Really?! Thanks asshat... happy hours over now. After the 30 minute wait to take my order, it's another 30 minutes before my drink comes. One of my other friends (oh, wise Paulie!) ordered 2 Dos Equis... knowing it would be a long journey to get another drink order in. When I ordered my drink, I also ordered an appetizer combo something or other... 35 minutes later, still nothing. I ask the waiter and he responds "Yeah, I just checked on that and it should be right out." I watch a large family group leave at a table next to our, them staff clean and seperate the tables, the tables are sat and two ladies are promptly served drinks and orders taken by a different member of waitstaff. It's been 40 minutes now. Oh look! Joy! Here comes someone with a plate and they are coming my way and I am so hungry I can't wait to eat whatever it is I ordered because it's been so long I forgot and.... what the HELL?! The two ladies who JUST sat down are getting their nachos?! Oh HELL TO THE NO! I get up, as it's now been over 50 minutes and walk into the main restaurant, running in to our waiter, I ask to speak to a manager. He fumbles then says he's need to go serve these drinks, and will be right back to get him. I wait and wait and watch more food go out My tummy is more than a little grumbly... He comes back to tell me that the manager is busy counting money, but will be with me as soon as he is done. Awesome. Instead, another manager comes over, and listens to my tale of woe. She is so caring and kind that I can see a light at the end of my hunger tunnel. She tells me she doesn't know why it has taken so long, but she'll get on it and get my order to me stat. I am elated! I go back to my table and in mere moments my plate of appetizers is brought out by another manager and our table is given the attention we have waited for all night. Our drink orders are taken and drinks promptly brought to us (wait, you mean it DOESN'T take 30 minutes to get a drink in here?!) and the rest of the evening is a little better. The manager comped me on the appetizer plate, which seemed like the natural thing to do, and was quite apologetic. Our waiter later sat with us at the table and tells me he's working on only 2 hours of sleep... uhmmm you're still at work, dude. Welcome to adulthood. Bad choices the night before do not excuse bad work habits. Once things settled down it did take, again, forever to get checks, to pay checks and to get receipts. WIll I go back? Maybe sometime, but it's doubtful. It was a frustrating event and there just wasn't anything that makes me want to come back. read more

Not a huge fan of Tex Mex but what I do love about Chuy's is the decor. Hub caps on the ceiling, family photos around every nook and corner, and fifties style furniture give Chuy's a nostalgic feel that you can't help but fall in love with. Chuy's was packed when we arrived so we had to wait about 10 minutes for a table for five but my co-workers were jazzed to have some queso and chips. I ordered the tortilla soup and chicken soft tacos while the rest of the group ordered an array enchiladas and burritos. I found my tortilla soup to be just a little spicy so I really didn't touch that, and the chicken soft tacos were yummy. Our waiter was very accommodating and kept our plate of chips and salsa full at all times. Chuy's is very family friendly so if you've got kids you won't have to worry about upsetting the table next to you. There were kids on almost every third table so you won't be alone if you've got a messy toddler who wants to throw chips all over the place. On a side note: I ended giving my tortilla soup to the hotel doorman and he absolutely loved it! read more

What's not to say about Chuy's that hasn't already been said? It's Tex-Mex with some more flair -- think Friday's does Austin style Tex-Mex. It's always consistent. It's always busy. Another fake Mexican restaurant where only white people seem to go. I have no idea what the difference between this place, Trudy's, and Guero's is. They all blend into the same "meh" in my mind. Salsa was more like pico de gallo and lacked flavor. Ranch dressing for a dip? It was hardly thick enough to coat a tortilla chip. The food came out and I was not terribly excited to start eating it. Everything was brown on the plate. Brown sauce smothering the entire plate, brown (tasteless) re-fried beans, brown-ish rice. And some soggy-looking peppers and lettuce as a condiment. Or was it a decoration? The Chile Relleno portion of my combo was decent, but certainly greasy between being deep-fried and filled with cheese. The veggie enchilada was lacking. The vegetables were not cooked consistently and did not taste fresh. If I'm going to pay $10 for a plate of inexpensive ingredients, I expect more interesting things to be done with it. A visit to Austin would not be complete without a trip to Chuy's. For me, they are the benchmark for Austin Tex-Mex. Like the other locations in town, the interior of the restaurant is a riot of colors, sights and sounds. They put on a good show of keeping it weird. The staff is always professional and have perfected the art of keeping chips and drinks always filled while hustling to get orders and attend to any other needs. All that will still coming across as laid back. Chill and spot on are rare when it comes to restaurant service. The food is good. Although its not great like mom's cooking, it will always be my favorite. I love their queso and creamy jalapeno dressing for dipping chips. Shrimp tacos or a Mexi-cobb salad are the call when I'm eating "light"... On days I'm not, one of their oversized burritos or enchiladas with boom-boom sauce tend to really hit the spot. The past few reviews for this Chuy's location have been pretty mediocre .... so I guess I'm going against the grain here. I went to Chuy's with my fam - six people total. We arrived at 6:45 pm on a Tuesday. The wait was about 20 minutes, so while the 'rents drank some wickedly strong margaritas we chilled outside with some free chips, salsa, and queso from the nacho car. Yum! We were seated in a nice booth surrounded by some pretty awesome art, and the queso fest continued. I had the chile rellenos stuffed with cheese and shrimp, topped with the creamy tomatillo sauce, pretty run of the mill Tex-mex. I loved loved loved my charro beans, a nice break from the traditional refrieds and black beans. However, my mom's shrimp tacos were pretty fantastic. I will order them next time. As for dessert. Tres Leches Cake. Word. Flan was simply okay, so go for the Tres Leches - it's huge, my brother and I split it and ended up sharing portions with the rest of my family. So to summarize - strong drinks, free chips and queso, good food, and funky atmosphere. And our waitress was a sweetheart too. Is the food at Maudie's better? Hell yeah. I do prefer dinning in a quieter environment with my friends. But Chuy's is a fun, although crowded place (with 'Austin' flair!) to take family/kids/out of town guests. read more

The old me ate that whole chicka chicka boom boom plate (noted in original review). The new (20 lbs lighter) me can not chow down as it did in the good old days. (Wait, let me get my walker....) When I am hitting Chuy's these days, which is often, they are accommodating my new svelteness with more skinny plates. Rather than a whole meal rife with rice and brimming with beans, I have been ordering two crispy chicken tacos ala carte. For about $7, I accomplish many goals: 1. not eating as much 2. slowing down to keep up with those who are eating that much 3. spending less 4. wasting less 5. taking in fewer calories Win, win, win, win and win.... I've only ever come here to drink so I can't say much about the food. My friends ordered dinner and it looked and smelled really good though so I would definitely try it! The margs are decent- I just ordered the basic margarita on the rocks. I've heard the flavored margaritas are pretty good too so I'll probably try one of those soon. This place gets pretty packed so I would suggest getting there at least an hour before you plan to eat, especially if you have a large party! read more

If you live in Austin or have ever been to Austin, you know Chuy's. This one (the new one by Costco) is no different. Same menu, same drinks. Same delicious creamy jalapeno dip. We had a long wait, but enjoyed the outside area. The waitress outside was wonderful and super friendly. She even came inside to tell us the actual name of the drink my friend ordered (in case she wanted another). Waitstaff, once at our table, was a little swamped and unpersonable, but I don't begrudge him that. We got our meals in a timely matter and all was correct. The patio is super cute, but we opted for the inside because of the wind. There are trees, but I think it may still get a bit hot in the Texas heat. Since it's just like every single other Chuy's, it's just fine. Does what it's supposed to. Overall, very good service. read more

The wife and I had dinner here Saturday night. Like Hump V, I've been eating at Chuy's for years. First time was in Houston in the early 90s. I don't know if this makes sense, but it's like the food tastes and looks TOO perfect nowadays. More and more "big" chain-like. That's okay I guess. It's still good. My favorite is still the Barton Springs location. We had fajitas. They were all cut perfectly. They tasted OK, but just very consistent with what I've eaten before at the Plano location. Maybe it's just that suburbia atmosphere that contributes to that McDonaldfication? It's not a knock. They have a good product. It's just tasting perfectly standardized these days, which is what I keep coming back to. I need to get back to the enchiladas, I think. Salsa was off. I thought I read somewhere that since tomatoes are out of season, salsas aren't looking as nice lately. Not Chuy's fault. Wait time was about 20 minutes on Saturday night around 7, so plan accordingly. We'll be back, but I need to let my wife experience the Barton Springs location. Always loved their bar. read more

It's time that I let Chuy's go. Twice now (at least) I've been disappointed. It's not bad... just not good. And now that I'm eating low-carb, and don't get my Mexican food fix nearly as often, when I do eat Mexican food, I want that meal to SATISFY. This didn't. Their chips are still thin and great. But what's with the salsa? It has become progressively vinegary. Honestly, I ate chips without any salsa at all. I've never been a fan of ranch dressing (even jalapeno-flavored) as a prelude to Mexican food. I ordered cheese enchiladas with green chile sauce this time. While I was a fan previously of Tex-Mex enchiladas, last time the sauce tasted sweet and almost redolent of mole. Not Tex-Mex in my book. And the cheese enchiladas were okay. Basic. Just cheese. And not enough green sauce. That's another thing.... unless I ask for extra sauce, they always skimp on it. Green chile rice was good. Service was good (Justeen was very attentive). It's loud, as you know, even at 4 pm on Saturday afternoon. But the food... It was okay. Just okay. And I want better. read more

Why do I keep coming back to Chuy's, Yelp asks? Because I love the Tex Mex offerings, which are typical yet unusual, they have a decent white wine and pour a nice, big glass of it for ya, the Boom Boom sauce is awesomely creamy and hot, the chicken is fresh, white meat, the ambiance is kitschy fun, and it's close to home. We always sit at the bar, and the service is always excellent. What's not to like? read more

I sill admit, this review is a little incomplete because we ate outside, and the only piece of the inside we saw was the "cocktail area." At first glance, everything seemed almost the same as the other Chuy's but the atmosphere was all wrong. I have always loved the "Keep Austin Wierd" feel of the Barton Springs location, but hated how crowded it got. Well, this location keeps the crowded-ness, but adds the richie-rich feel of the new Arbor Trails shopping center. The food was great as always (try the Tortilla soup!), but the patio lacked the shade necessary for a 90+ summer day in Austin, and with no fans out there, I'm sure it's going to get downright unbearable when the 100+ temperatures arrive in a few weeks. Overall I still love Chuy's, but I'll leave this location to the Circle-C'ers and Bowie Highschoolers, and stick with the Barton Springs location. read more

I just wanted to add to Rafiq's review that it was simply unbelievable how unprofessional the waitstaff was at this Chuy's. I've worked in the food industry and I always give waitstaff the benefit of the doubt because I know it's an extremely hard job for not that much money. That being said, the three different people (I still don't know who was supposed to be our actual waiter) who waited on us simply acted like they didn't care at all that we were there. We first had to flag someone down to take our order and after that, we had to remind them to refill our water, bring us the food we ordered, bring us our check, and finally to actually pick up our check. Honestly, I believe we could have waited on ourselves better than the people that were paid to do so. The only saving grace was a waiter named Jonathan who went out of his way to take our order and apologized multiple times for our lack of service. He showed empathy and professionalism that was seriously lacking in his colleagues. Bottom line: I know this might have been a bad night for these people or something like that, but the fact that our dinner took two hours and my party and I had to do most of their work is inexcusable. At least try to be helpful. We're paying good money for your mediocre food. read more

We have been to this location multiple times. We ordered drinks from the bar and waited 20 min for a table. That's not unusual, but it's good food and normally great service. We got sat at our table, the hostess told us the specials and then went and got our chips because it had been a while. Mind you it's just a table of 2. 10 min passes and our waiter hadn't showed us to even get drinks or say I'll be right with you. We go ask the hostess if she could get our waiter. She goes to the waiters and lets them know they we haven't been served. She leave, they then argue for 5 min about who is going to help us. We finally just left after sitting at the table for 20 min with out any service. read more

We went to this Chuy's assuming it'd be less packed on a Saturday night than the one on Barton Springs. There was still a 20-30 minute wait, but definitely not the kind of scene I imagine you'd find at the other location. You can self-seat in the bar area, but only for apps and drinks. At one of the Virginia locations, you can eat there too. This was a little disappointing. We were a pretty easy table to wait on, ordering everything at once and not needing any refills or anything the whole meal, and so whether because of that or not, the service was fine. We really could've used plates for our queso and were never given the opportunity to ask, but other than that. We were adventurous and ordered the Elvis Memorial Combo... and we ended up having enough food for three whole meals. The food was great, as usual, but the queso chips on the side with the taco were cold and congealed by the time we got them. Luckily, we'd ordered queso compuesto (pico on the side, of course), so we could use that. My dining companion's regular margarita on the rocks was strong, my strawberry frozen made me question if it even had alcohol. I'd prefer the drinks be a little more consistent. Ample and huge parking lot and waiting area with a good amount of seating makes this location worthwhile to visit. Oh, and they have curbside to go take-out! Score! (And a buy 8 to go entrees, get the 9th free card right inside the door on the table there.) read more

I like this location much better than Barton Springs. It has a nice patio, back rooms full of awesome art to distract my daughter and sparkly gold chairs. Did I mention the strawberry swirl margaritas are delicious? The food is decent on the side of pretty good. It is pretty run of the mill Tex-Mex. I prefer a more authentic Mexican, but I know most of this town loves imposters. It is always packed. The service is "ok" meaning not quite up to Chuy's standards. Twice now my combo plate has been served undercooked. I don't mind al dente rellenos so much, but chewy enchiladas are not acceptable. Yes, they were crowded, but we waited a long time for food, only to have it served undercooked. Is the kitchen too small for the seats, manned by inexperienced folks? Betting if Mike & Co. still held the reins, this wouldn't be allowed... And get rid of the idiotic metal palm trees. They're in the way, and not amusing read more

Always consistently Chuy's delicious! I sat at the bar most recently as I like chatting with others when dining alone. The bartenders are so personable and attentive! Love the creamy jalapeño ranch with chips! Had the watermelon margarita (large-oops) and it was amazing!!!!!! It's made with real Watermelons, not some syrup wanna-be. Here's what you need to know - we came here (group of 6) and got seated outside relatively quickly. After sitting and waiting 20 minutes, we flagged down a waiter to serve us. Jonathan, who was sincerely apologetic and off his shift, took our order but had to leave. So we were pawned off on a useless girl who took 20+ minutes to take our order and 20+ minutes to fill our waters after. When our food finally came, she dropped off "a bunch of silverware" and didn't bother to pass it out. After 1.5 hours of total time being at the restaurant, we finished our food and were ready to pay. Useless waiter came back and dropped of all of checks in a stack and didn't bother passing them out individually again. She definitely would not have received any tip if it wasn't for our larger party. By the way, it was 9:15pm on a Sunday at this time and the restaurant was empty, so this girl wasn't waiting any other tables. Needless to say, we won't be coming back to this Chuy's again - they need to hire some competent, courteous people before we do. And it's not like the food is that great, either. read more

delicious! A friend and I went on Friday night..the place was HOPPING! We grabbed a table in the bar area while we waited for our table. Self serve chips and salsa were a nice treat while we waited. My friend got a mexican martini and I got a mojito. Both were well made and tasty--not too pricey either. Dinner came out really quickly--I took the server's suggestion and had the special that night (Beef burrito)-YUM. It was HUGE--I ate it for three meals (seriously). Service was great, felt no rush to leave. The bar server told us to go ahead to our dinner table, she offered to come and find us later to pay out. That was a simple gesture that was appreciated and made our lives that much easier. This place is less than a mile from my apt--I will be returning!! read more

Went here for Happy Hour with friends and had a good time. We were seated right away which was awesome as I was expecting a short wait time. Really can't get enough of the jalapeno ranch sauce they serve with the chips and salsa. Seriously thinking of stopping by there and requesting a large batch of green sauce and chips to go! Ordered the stuffed avocado and it was good, a little small, but good and kinda spicy (is that how it always is?). Took 40 minutes to get a to go order of soup from a rude staff. I get it that they were "busy", but that's why I ordered a bowl of soup to go. It's easy and fast. But the man who took my order was a real jerk when I was so surprised that it was going to take so long for SOUP. And when I asked them to check on my order, I was completely ignored. This isn't the first time I had a bad experience at this location either, it seems that I always have a bad experience at the Arbor Trails location, although the Barton Springs location is amazing. read more

I've probably been going to Chuys since the beginning of time and believe me that's a long time, so I find myself quite disappointed in my visit tonight. To start it took forever to get waited on, the poor guy just kept running back and forth like he was in a pinball machine. Then the chips and salsa were delivered, the chips were excellent , the salsa on the other hand had only one dimension and that wasn't flavor, it was just hot. I have no ideal how you can get hot with out flavor, but they have definitely got it down to an art. Moving on, I ordered the huge burrito with the deluxe sauce, the sauce was pretty good but burrito was a complete disappointment it had no redeeming qualities at all, it was very bland and kind of left an interesting taste in your mouth. (Not in a good way) My son had the Elvis fried chicken and loved it except for the beans, which I believe may have been what killed my burrito. I'm thinking it was just a bad night for Chuys, so I'm going to take a little vacation from them and try back in a few months. read more

Two stars for the waiter we had he was friendly and funny. We got an outdoor seating it was okay. The food is just Americanized Mexican food. It sorta authentic but not. I felt the prices were okay, but I couldn't finish my enchiladas it was nothing impressive. I don't even remember what sauce I had with it. I think went with a traditional red sauce over it. The bean tasted good the rice was alright. Out of some sort of politeness I got mine in a doggy bag. The rest of the people we were with didn't take their burrito home. It was a big burrito but the food was just eh. I'm sure other people love their Chuy's and that's cool. As for me and my husband it's a NA for us. But we are glad we tried it. read more

Folks (especially visitors): Chuy's is not what you want. Trust me: my name ends in a "z." There are about 4,000 better Tex-Mex places in Austin. The food isn't *bad* here, just intensely mediocre. I've had better food from Taco Bell -- seriously. (And the chips... OMG... little grease wafers.) The service at this location was particularly bad on my last visit; aside from no one getting any refills on beverages at my table, we waited about 20 minutes for the check to arrive... on a Tuesday night when it wasn't all that busy. If you go, just know that you're spending money here that could be spent on more authentic, flavorful, original entrees at other establishments not that far away. I really enjoyed the food at Chuy's. The food was great, the service was good enough, and it was PACKED. What was less than great was the noise level. We literally could not talk to the people at our table over the sound of everyone else in the restaurant talking - not from live music, just talking. The people we brought to this restaurant hated it and will not go back because of how loud it is and how long the wait is. Love the energy, love the food. I had a smothered-type burrito - and I love the sauces. This trip to Chuy's was our third attempt - it was the first of our three and we were finally willing to wait 45 minutes for a table. Was it worth it? I think so. We'll go back someday. Just not very often. My recommendation: if you like a fun, lively atmosphere, and good Mexican food, then Chuy's is a great spot.
