The fresh chips, salsa, ranch sauce?, queso is to die for. Their slushy drinks with a corona add a shop of tequila for a buck, is amazing. And the food itself was amazing. Chuy's is our go-to TexMex spot that we can always trust to have traditional dishes and authentic flavors. This location can get crowded and noisy during dinner time but our wait time was just 5 mins on a busy Sunday evening. It is an old restaurant so you can see some signs of wear and even the menus were faded, so much so that some words were missing. It's not the worst, but it's definitely not the best. The salsa is super hot. If you don't like hot don't try it. I don't understand why they don't tone it down a few notches. Chicken tacos are three boneless strips with nothing added. Sides on the plate served are lettuce, chopped tomatoes, guac and a small dash of cheese. Very bland chicken, it's not marinaded in any flavoring. It's actually sad with some tweaking the menu has potential. Service was just okay, I asked for a to go box and I got one that had a cheese thumbprint on it and it grossed me out. I ordered the tacos Al carbon. They were very good. I will never understand the hype around Chuy's but I know it is beloved by many. I came to this location a few years ago and couldn't remember the experience so decided to come on Sunday after spending a day at Barton Springs. There was no wait and the service was decent but the food was pretty bad like call a health inspector bad. Here are the highlights (or lowlights?): - Personal preference but I don't get why they serve ranch with their chips? - Drinks (cherry limeade + mojito) were far too sweet - Queso was mid at best and tasted off - We found not one, not two, but THREE hairs in various dishes. Excellent TexMex restaurant. Surprised that it was so popular, on a Thursday, and almost entirely non-Mexicans. I have never tried the fajitas after mediocre ones in California, this time was only because friend's recommendation, and it turned out very good. The chicken and beef were both juicy and tasty. The chips and salsa were pretty enjoyable, guacamole in particular. I am never a fan of chimichanga so give them a pass for that, it was alright. Awful experience at the Barton Springs location! We were seated and it took 5 minutes for ANYONE to acknowledge we needed to put in our drink order. A young gentleman brought chips and salsa to our table. It took almost 10min before what I'd assume to be a manager noticed no one had taken our drink order. As soon as he turned around to get our waitress POOF she appeared! We put our food order in..just an appetizer plate and steak burrito. Our food came faster than our drinks..Shockingly. We wanted more chips so we put our chip basket at the edge of the table and not a single person acknowledged the empty basket. The quality of the food was a bit lower than I would have liked - with the beef looking a bit dried out. Food is plentiful though with generous portions. Because the fajitas were everything I wanted. --- --- --- My colleagues and I were originally slated to have dinner at Chuy's, but all day long, we all argued in circles about alternative options. But for some reason, people wanted to only snack on chips and queso + margaritas there, and stick out the hour wait for Chuy's. To be honest, I preferred the queso and the divey alternative. Chuy's was awesome place to visit and grab lunch at. We came here for lunch the day prior Labor Day while in Austin on Sunday the 4th. Christian was at the bar serving drinks and greeted us while we waited to be sat, he offered if we wanted to just pull up a seat and eat at the bar top, so we did. We had a couple of frozen margaritas & shiner bocks. We then asked his favorite items on the menu after he brought us chips along with salsa & this really good different style ranch. The ranch was almost like a cilantro type or something, it was really good with the chips. We then ordered shrimp tacos & the flautas plate to split both of those. Both were excellent, the flautas came 6 to a plate, and were fried nice & crispy, no sogginess at all. The shrimp tacos had excellent flavoring & both came with beans & rice. This is a franchise out here, I think there's 3 or 4 in the Austin area, but this one is the original & most popular I believe. I'd come back here 100% next time I'm we're in Austin. read more

We have eaten at the Barton Springs Chuy's several times, and have always enjoyed it! For starters their chips & salsa are delicious, and both the guacamole and queso as an appetizer are excellent as well. For entrees, we love the beef fajitas, shrimp tacos & my fiancé likes their tortilla soup too. Definitely recommend their flour tortillas, as they are homemade and absolutely delicious. The original Chuy's is a fun, busy atmosphere that's perfect for meeting with family and friends and enjoying a good meal together. My partner swears it's better in Texas then where we're from, but I can neither deny nor confirm as I am not a Chuy's groupie like he is. What we got: Tres Leches - 5* I will say that the serving size here is A LOT bigger than where I'm from. So that was very, very enjoyable. Beef Burrito as big as your face with an egg on top - 3.5* (my partner gives in 5*). It hit the spot and filled us up quite nicely. I really enjoyed trying multiple sauces with it. Sauces we tried on the side: Ranchero (kid friendly) - was a nice sauce. Red chile (mild) - it does indeed have a smokey flavor like it said it would! Great service, okay food, weak drinks. Props to my overworked server for always being prompt and on point. Despite being run off her feet, she was on top of everything. The chicken tortilla soup was great. I was surprised that it was a clear broth, not creamy, but the flavor was rich. I'd come back to get it as a snack or to go. However, my fajitas were underwhelming. It looked as if the chicken had been cooked separately from the vegetables (i.e., green peppers, red peppers, and onions) and placed on top of them only at the last minute. The vegetables were very bland. It came with all the usual accompaniments, which were fine. The drinks were huge but, from their taste and from their effect on me, they had very little alcohol. The house Margarita, for example, had no perceptible tequila taste. It might as well have been a limeade. The passion fruit and pineapple Margarita tasted better, but again, it had no perceptible tequila taste. The King's Punch, a sort of tiki drink, did at least taste of rum. At least the prices were pretty low. It was okay considering what I paid. However, with all the Mexican restaurants in this town, I don't think I'll be back (unless I get a craving for chicken tortilla soup). read more

Boy was this place busy. I had never been to a Chuys before and this was I believe the original first location in Austin. I definitely felt like the servers looked a little overwhelmed and it took a while for food even though I was quick to order. My nachos were okay, a little too much beans and not enough cheese. The people I ordered to go for enjoyed their food. Staff however didn't put any utensils with the takeout and had to scramble at the hotel to find utensils for the to go order. My friend got in line online ahead of time, but when we got there they said there was no evidence we were in line even though we had proof on our phones. The service was quite bad as we had to wait over 40 minutes after we were seated before we could order food, and my friend had been fasting all day for Ramadan. We even flagged down our waitress earlier to try to order, but we weren't allowed to. We liked the prayers they had on the utensil packets, but we would like to request prayers of more religions be added, at least the major world ones. I have ordered takeout from this location and enjoyed it; however, I cannot recommend this restaurant for dining in. We ordered drinks and queso and ended up ordering nothing else due to the poor quality and poor service. We were also a bit disturbed by the incredibly juvenile clientele and did not feel inclined to stay for a full meal. While we appreciated the complimentary chips and salsa, we were disappointed that we received them approximately 15 minutes prior to any beverages (water or the alcoholic drinks). We ordered skinny margs and received sickeningly sweet beverages that were inedible to either of us. By the time the waitress came back to check in, we had finished our chips and queso, not drank any of our margaritas, and finished our water. At this point, we mentioned that we thought we had received the incorrect drinks. Our waters were never refilled, and it took approximately 20 minutes to receive our replacement skinny margaritas. When we finally received them, the quality was severely lacking. The tequila in the replacement beverages tasted incredibly cheap. We were so fed up we ordered nothing else. It took another 15+ minutes to receive our check, and we were charged for large margaritas when we ordered regular. We were so frustrated by the length of time of our visit that we did not complain about the erroneous up charge for the drinks. We will not be returning. read more
