This place was amazing, then again, the food better be amazing, when you are the only one not speaking Italian. We had the Calamari Fritti and Caprese for appetizers. The batter on the calamari was was very light and cooked perfectly and the caprese was two large slices of mozzarella, with several sliced tomatoes. For the main course, my wife ordered the Ravioli Quattro Formaggi, which she loved and I ordered the Taglioline Nerano. The smoked provola sauce was delicious. read more

Came here on a whim with my wife, we usually go to another restaurant closer to us for Italian food but decided to give this place a try. When we got here the place had a few tables and we were seated immediately. The server was Italian, and the chef was Italian as well. We knew we were in for a treat. We ordered a lightly fried eggplant dish as an appetizer that was a special for that day, it tasted really good. I ordered the Ragu and my wife got the rockfish which was a special that day. We both also got house salad with our meals. The salads are super light but still very good and made with fresh good quality ingredients. I loved the main courses, my Ragu was amazing and my wife rockfish was incredibly light and cooked perfectly. We got a Cannoli for dessert which tasted amazing but it was pretty small, wish we ordered two of those suckers. Either way we'll definitely be back and I highly recommend you check this place out if you're looking for some good Italian food. read more

A fun night with friends eating at Ciao Capri. It has a large awning but several had trouble finding the restaurant. It's tucked next to a Mexican restaurant. Nice happy hour specials. This was my first time visiting/eatIng at Ciao Capri. I had a hankering for some authentic Italian food on my birthday. The place I'd initially planned to eat at has apparently closed down. So, my bf was driving down Broad St. while I perused Yelp for an alternative. I was almost ready to settle on a generic place when Ciao Capri popped up on my Yelp search. I really wanted to go somewhere cozy and romantic to celebrate my birthday, and that is exactly what I got, plus some. As soon as www walked in the door, we were greeted by several smiling faces and welcoming greetings. The crazy thing I is, they were all completely genuine and happy we'd come in that night. This wasn't because it was some hole I in the wall spot (clearly, there were plenty of people inside with happy and content smiles on their faces), this was because the staff and owner were genuinely happy we'd decided to come their establishment that night. The ambiance was cozy and warm, and the staff were amazing. We had more than enough people making sure that we had a pleasurable evening, and not in the annoying way. Now, let me get to the food.... Oh... My... Goodness!!!! The food was superb. A lovely lady at theta Le next to us who was alsO celebrating her birthday, recommended we try the mussels appetizer. She said, "make sure you get some extra bread so you can sop up the amazing broth!" I'm so glad I followed instructions because she was absolutely right. It took everything in me NOT to pick the bowl up and drink the yummy mussel juice! Lol For my entree, I decided to enjoy the linguini and clams, which was basically the same delIcious, garlicky, white wine broth that I'd had in my appetizer. Thus, I was NOT disappointed. I will absolutely be recommending this restaurant to my friends, and I will definitely be back for a visit before I visit Italy this summer and after to make sure I am right about the authenticity of Ciao Capri. read more

Ciao Capri is a beautifully authentic Italian restaurant tucked away in henrico. We were seated by the window, table beautifully set for 5. The owner was so friendly and welcoming to us. We enjoyed a complimentary bottle if wine (moscato) that was very nice. The appetizers were Caprese salad, very fresh and nice tomatoes and mozzarella cheese, and Calamari. Our entrees were, Risotto ai Frutti di Mare, Ravioli Quattro Formagg,and Taglioline Nerano (shrimp,pasta in a prolova cheese sauce) everything was very good. The staff is friendly and attentive. However, the past few visits have disappointed. The risotto is not good: it's under seasoned, watery, and gritty/ undercooked. I had shrimp on risotto that tasted and looked as if they were unseasoned, possibly thawed and just put on top of the risotto. read more

DH and I had a double date with another couple and they suggested Ciao Capri. None had eaten there before but from reviews we read, it sounded like a great idea. When we arrived, we found a lovely place tucked away in strip mall that does not offer up a strip mall experience. We had some lovely wine. DH and I shared the calamari. I had the risotto al limone with scallops that were perfectly seared. DH had the clams and linguine. We were both very happy with our dining selections. Our dining companions ordered the specials of the evening and were equally pleased. I really wanted to try the lemon blueberry cheesecake but could not eat another bite. I had a tortuously long day at work on a Friday, which are the days that are supposed to be chill. No, not for me. My husband and I talked about going out to dinner somewhere different and I really wanted to venture out of our neighborhood, but since I worked late and just didn't have it in me to get dressed up, we did a quick search of local restaurants and found Ciao Capri. From the outside this place looks, well, not nice. It has a ratty looking awning with some of the worst signage I've seen. If I didn't know it was there, I would miss it. In fact, my daughter couldn't find it so I had to walk outside to show her where to come. We settled at the bar because we intended to just have appetizers and drinks. I mentioned my daughter earlier...she called while we were eating, so she joined us. She's only 16, so it was nice that they let her sit at the bar with us. The place is small do every table was taken, so it made sense to let her sit with us. We ordered cocktails...a hot and spicy for me, which was essentially a dirty martini with hot sauce added. My husband ordered something that had Campari in it. He let me taste it and to me, it tasted like medicine... For appetizers, we ordered shrimp, which were sautéed with white wine, butter, garlic. We also ordered mussels and littleneck clams, which were cooked the same way. Oh, I forgot to mention they served bread with this terrific herby garlic dip...best thing I had the whole night. The shrimp were fine...kind of tough to me. I ate one or two and gave the rest to my husband. The mussels were really fishy to me, so I only had one. For entrees we ordered a chicken dish that had fingerling potatoes, broccoli and the chicken was covered with tomato sauce and mozzarella. I got a creamy pasta with shrimp and my husband got a pasta with mussels and clams. This restaurant has a very limited menu and you can tell they use the same ingredients in different ways...smart if you're controlling costs. We also ordered coffee, after dinner drinks and desserts...a flourless almond cake that was super dry and a lemon blueberry cheesecake. The desserts reminded me of something a home cook would make. Everything was okay. My husband and daughter loved their meals, which is why this is a 3.5 Star place for me. The staff was super friendly...this is definitely a family-owned place. It was packed too, which is a good sign. I think maybe I just ordered the wrong things. As we were leaving, I heard people ordering swordfish and Osso bucho, so I guess they have specials that we didn't hear about. For me, the menu items are sort of old school Italian fare. Second trip to Ciao Capri and food was not as good as the first time. They didn't have the noodles the dish listed on the menu, the replacement noodle wasn't as good, and the ragu was just ok. To top it off, an employee was vaping at the bar looking at his phone inside the restaurant, the chef was in the restaurant watching us and looked sad and despondant, and there was more staff standing around than customers. There were only 3 dinning parties there and at least 4 separate tables empty and the bar as well. We did not feel welcomed by the door greeter. Found ourselves in the West End on a Friday night, looking to find an Italian restaurant that we hadn't tried yet. Based on the reviews of my fellow Yelpers, we decided to try Ciao Capri. First impression walking in the door, the deco was very nice, romantically lit and @ 7:00 PM, not busy. We were quickly greeted at the door and shown to a table for 2. Waitress quickly came to our table with menus and poured water into our glass, left to go get a bread basket while we review our menu options. Waitress returned with our bread, asked if we would like something from the bar, we declined and she asked for our order. I had to ask if there were any specials, she apologized and told of of 2 offerings. The menu was condensed, which i can appreciate because so many restaurants go overboard offers 20 or more options. This menu was not a "Typical" Italian menu. No signs of anything parmesan, no Lasagna or the run of mill items. All of the offerings were unique but contained familiar ingredients. Our Calamari appetizer was very lightly deep fried to a lite blond color, still tender and not greasy. Unfortunate for me, there were no tentacles. Tomato dipping sauce was very thin. Entree #1 was Veal Scaloppini severed with Green Beans and Potatoes. Veal was tender and NOT over sauced. Veggies were just OK, needed more seasoning Entree #2 was "Gamberi Arrabiata" which was expected to be Shrimp with a spicy wine based sauce with linguine. Again, somebody forgot the spice. (5) Jumbo Shrimp were a tad over done. Overall the food was good enough though maybe priced a little on the high side. $22 - $25 entrees should at least include a salad. read more

I have known the owners for over 35 years and my oldest son is 18, the same age I was when I first started going to the Capri downtown and then the Capri at Gayton and Gaskins. The owners, Alberto and Peppino Mastromano now have the next generation learning the business and it was a delight to see Luca Mastromano, Peppino's son in the dining room attending to guests. Every bit as charming as his father was back in his prime, you can tell that Ciao Capri is destined to remain a fan favorite for another generation. The menu and approach have changed too. Gone are the days of $250 bottles of wine and $40 entrees. I am glad to see a return to sensible and affordable dinners and wine. We had a delightful bottle of wine in the $40 range that would rival many $100 bottles of wine anywhere else. The food was excellent as always thanks to Peppino being in the kitchen, but this time, it seemed extra special. Simple dishes with premium ingredients made simply with love by someone who still cares what the guests have for dinner. It has been a while since my wife and spent "date night" a Caio Capri, but it won't be long before we are back for the next date night thanks to a delightful and affordable evening. I can't recommend this place enough. If you gave it a try before and haven't been back in a while, then, by all means, give it another try, I think you will delighted at how reasonable and enjoyable the place is these days. read more

My friend and I decided to eat here when another local Italian restaurant was closed for the evening. The food was good, but not great and certainly not worth the price. I had the Ravioli alla Caprese and the sauce was good however there was only a scant amount of Bufala Ricotta which was listed as the first ingredient. I think $17 for cheese ravioli is too steep. This dish should have been $14 considering there was nothing special about it and there was no meat in it. My friend had the same assessment of her Vitello Tiberio at $23, overpriced and nothing special. The service was okay although not very friendly. The waiter seemed annoyed when we didn't order an appetizer. When I was presented with someone else's check, he didn't even apologize which I thought was a little odd. If you do go to this restaurant, maybe the appetizers would be a better choice than the entrees. The selection seemed better too. read more

In all fairness, I would give this place 3 1/2 stars if I was able to, but not quite 4 stars. This is a very casual and quaint little restaurant, definitely different from the previous Little Venice restaurant they owned. The service and staff were great and extremely nice. Constantly kept asking if everything was alright and if we needed anything else. This was on a Saturday night, but wasn't very busy. I will say that the menu is small and doesn't have a huge variety of choices, same with the wine menu. Hands down the best part of the meal were the fresh baked bread they brought out and their signature dipping sauce, almost like a chimichurri sauce. However, if that's the best thing, then that doesn't say a whole lot. There were 4 of us and we each ordered a different appetizer and shared. I got the meatballs which I thought were bland. The calamari was tasty, but not the best I've ever had. The shrimp were bland and I did not taste much of the garlic in the sauce as they claimed. Don;t even get me started on the caprese. The mozza was good quality, but it is far from what I would call a caprese salad. Just be prepared to not get what you expect at most restaurants. I ordered the spaghetti with clams, mussels, calamari, and shrimp. It sounded like ti would be really good, but I had to season it up with a lot of salt, pepper, and parmesan to get some flavor into it. It sure could have used some more of the tomato broth. I wish I had gotten the veal, as my wife got that and I tried some and it was very good. However, my friend ordered the filet. Yes, it is billed as a 6oz filet, which is petite. However, you still expect it to look like a filet and taste like a filet. Filets are a couple inches thick. This was about 3/4 in thick, and looked and tasted more like a sirloin. I'm still convinced it wasn't a filet. However, if it was, they certainly don't know how to trim their filets. That's for sure! The dessert was very good. I don;t remember what it was, but we ordered one of the table and all had a bit. I still think he bread and dessert were far better than the apps and entrees. I'd recommend going to Edo Squid instead where you get better food for cheaper. read more

Let me start out by saying we know good Italian. I realize that may sound snobby to some, but we've eaten the good stuff and the not so good stuff. So we know. And Ciao Capri hit it out of the ballpark on all points Saturday night. We went with another couple who are from NY, and they really know good food. We started out with the calamari and polpette (beef and veal meatballs). Both were served quickly, piping hot and full of flavor. Calamari is easy to screw up (it can be undercooked or overcooked) and it was fantastic in every way. Not greasy. The tomato dipping sauce was the perfect complement. The five large meatballs were pillowy and flavorful. Of course our apps came with these delicious rolls that happen to be flown in from a bakery in California. These people don't mess around! Our friends got the Pesce Puttanesca (Fresh catch of the day which was grouper, sautéed with capers, tomato, black olives, served with spaghetti alla chitarra) and the Spaghetti alla Gradola (Shrimp, Calamari, Little Neck Clams and Mussels, with garlic and roasted tomato broth). Although we didn't taste theirs, they had nothing but good things to say about their meals. I got the Vitello Tiberio (Veal scaloppine, sauteed with white wine, fresh squeezed lemon juice, artichoke hearts and capers). The veal was cooked to perfection and it had the right balance of tartness. My SO got the Tagliolini Nerano (Fresh Tagliolini, "Linguine like pasta" zucchini, shrimp and a light smoked Provola sauce). The shrimp were delectable and cooked to perfection. We were too stuffed for dessert. Throughout the meal our server and the owner came over multiple times to make sure we were satisfied. Great service and great food. We will be back. Note: Ciao Capri was recently reviewed in the Richmond Times Dispatch and received four out of four stars. You will need a reservation or you may be turned away. We checked out this new place with another couple. My husband started w/Peperonata. I tried it. It was very tasty. All the flavors were balanced. Two of us got the Risotto al Limone. It was perfect, not hard, not mushy. The scallops were seared perfecly & tender inside. The flavors were very good w/a hint of Old Bay, very yummy! My husband got the catch of the day, Rock fish. I tried the spaghetti that went w/it. It was so tasty & perfectly al dente. Our friend said he had to come back to try the spaghetti, it looked so good. Our other friend got the Taglialini Nerano. She said the sauce was awesome! One thing I need to mention, the entrée did not come with a salad, but we will be coming back! read more

I ordered a chicken dish with red sauce and mozzarella, with green beans and roasted fingering potatoes. I was actually very dissapointed with the lack of seasoning in regards to the green beans and potatoes. Although the ingredients were very fresh...they were also quite bland. I had to load them up with butter from the bread, salt and pepper. The chicken was rather ordinary as well. Not bad, but just nothing exciting either. Nothing in my meal could justify the higher price point. On the plus side....the service was top notch! Our waitress was attentive and very accommodating. The wine was delicious. And the atmosphere was intimate and very inviting. I would have to say that since the flavors were simply not exciting and the prices were too high to overlook that fact..we will not return.
