Tried Johnny Ray's Sultry Soul Food and overall, it was an okay experience. We ordered the wings with their sticky sauce, collards with cabbage, and rice with gravy. The collards and cabbage were definitely the standout--well-seasoned and full of flavor. The chicken had a bit too much breading for my taste, but the flavor was decent. The mac and cheese, unfortunately, missed the mark for us. On the upside, the service was friendly and [[HIGHLIGHT]]the atmosphere had a warm, welcoming vibe.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] While not everything hit, there were some good moments, and I'd consider giving them another try to explore more of the menu.

My son wanted soul food so away we went. Johnny Ray's keeps popping up so we decided to try it. Right off Sligo Ave in downtown Silver Spring, it's across from the line of auto repair shops and there is very little parking. Fortunately, less than a block away is the World Building parking garage which is reasonable everyday but free on the weekend. [[HIGHLIGHT]]So quick parking and we walked in to note that they have a bar, tables and several booths. It appeared to be a seat yourself, so we did.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Apparently most people order at the bar and then sit, but they're trying out table service which was nice. They brought clean, well presented silverware on a gorgeous tray and a menu. One. To share. It was fine but two would likely have been better. We each decided to try the wings. My son went for jerk and I tried the lemon pepper because I can't eat spicy. We tried the macaroni and cheese, green beans, okra, collard greens and black eyed peas. The greens were the standouts, the black eyed peas were hard, cold and under seasoned. The macaroni and cheese needed ... salt. I try not to order food that I make well at home, so hard pass on the Mac and cheese and black eyed peas otherwise the sides were quite good and well prepared. Again, because I cook I wouldn't say fabulous but good, solid soul food options, especially the okra and collards which were the standouts of our sides!

Best soul food restaurant in Downtown Silver Spring! If you're ever craving your momma's home cooked meals, look no further - Johnny Ray's will get you right. I ordered the fried fish with Mac and cheese and fried okra, and a side of fried shrimp. It came with cornbread! One word - delicious! Excellent service - I wanted to try the potato salad while waiting for my food and they were so nice to give a tiny lil sample. [[HIGHLIGHT]]In the restaurant, they had Black art on the walls and cookout hit music playing. Nice vibe![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Will be back! Highly recommend.

Tonight my Mom got me some fried "smothered" pork chops! I'm not sure if the grease was fresh but they were a little rough not too tender . Way too tough!!! The mac n cheese wasn't as creamy or flavorful as I'd hoped! I'm a mac n cheese kinda guy. The string green beans simply tasted like salt not flavors! I have had "better" from Johnny Rays so tonight was a miss for me!!! Must do better!!

It's really hard to find good soul food in the dmv! I checked out Johnny Ray's and was pleasantly surprised. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It is way bigger than I expected inside, so I would go back and try dine in.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] However, the cashier was communicative. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I do wish their signage was a little clearer because I almost passed it, but overall I enjoyed the food.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I ordered the fried whiting, which was battered to perfection and very flavorful. The yams were tasty as well, but could've been cooked a little longer and cut into smaller pieces (which probably would've helped the cooking to be more even) The mac and cheese was interesting. It wasn't bad, but it was very garlic forward, which I'm not used to. It also didn't taste baked. The cornbread was also pretty good, but could've been a tad more moist.

Came here yesterday because I had a craving for some soul food and Johnny Rays did not disappoint. My plate presentation was nice and the food was even better. The jerk chicken wings was seasoned very well and nice and hot . Everything was so fresh and delicious . [[HIGHLIGHT]]They had a nice music selection playing in the background also which gave good vibes.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Fast and friendly service .

Good food paired with exceptional customer service always leaves me feeling satisfied and content. In my opinion, this is one of the best soul food restaurants in the DMV. The food is always delicious, and the customer service is simply top notch.

Ok, so I didn't feel like cooking was craving a little would food and so I hop on Yelp to find that there is a new soul food spot in silver spring. If you're not looking for it you'd almost miss it it's tucked on a back street across from a bunch of body shooed there street parking and a very small parking lot with about 4 spots to the left of it. Anywho I called to order ahead but they were out of whiting so I opted to go in and order. What we had: Sticky wings- 10's across the board perfect mix of crunchy and sweet hint of heat. It's their take on mambo sauce and I must say it's better than traditional mambo. Salmon plate: I got it medium and I was surprised that it was cooked to perfection and I think it's glazed with that same stick sauce. ALSO A HIT! Mac- I am picky about Mac, but it was good it has a hint of sweetness which as a Mac girl it I wasn't expecting but once I got over the shocker was good! (It took me 2 seconds) Greens- they used smoked turkey instead of pork, I really prefer my greens savory these also had a him of sweetness, they were good just not my preferred way of them being prepared. Catfish- we requested it fried hard and it was delicious. Fried okra- I do not like okays my partner ordered this and he was a fan. I tasted it and it was actually good, a tinge bit salty for me but on a scale of a person who would rather stare than eat okra it was pretty tasty. The customer service was great. The staff was really friendly and personable. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place is also super cute inside with nice colorful are and some tables for dine in which was a pleasant surprise.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Because I thought it was just a carry out. Over all it is most definitely worth a try!

Solid choice for soul food in the DTSS area, although I will say that the food could use a little less salt and more flavor. This is coming from someone who loves her salt. The wings were juicy with a perfect crispy skin, however the lemon could use a little more oomph. I found myself wishing for a sauce to dip them in. The catfish had an amazing texture and taste, while the fried okra was simply addicting. Liked the Mac and cheese but wished that it wasn't as garlicky. The collard greens tastes a bit bland, but I'm not the biggest fan of smoked turkey collard greens. The cornbread lacked moisture but still tasted good. Solid 4 stars, a few tweaks and it'll be perfect!

The macaroni and cheese is nasty. The Black Eyed Peas is horrible. Their fish is fried perfectly but it's too salty the greens with the turkey Neq you're horrible and sweet. I don't know how they're giving this a four stars. The tartar sauce was horrible. I don't know what it is. It's sweet and nasty. I don't know what it is.

Johnny Ray's Sultry Soul Food consistently delivers exceptional quality & service. The staff exhibits professionalism, demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of the menu & creates a welcoming atmosphere which enhances the customer experience. The cuisine is distinguished by its excellence; notably, the catfish is expertly prepared, flavorful & well-seasoned, obviating the need for additional condiments such as hot sauce or tartar sauce. Side dishes are thoughtfully paired with the main course: the collard greens with turkey are fresh & complement the catfish, while the macaroni & cheese presents a rich, satisfying flavor akin to a dessert. The cornbread is reminiscent of cake. Collectively, the superior culinary offerings & attentive service result in a memorable dining experience. Johnny Ray's stands out for its consistent standards & convenient downtown Silver Spring location. A visit to this establishment is highly recommended.

Absolutely yummy, friendly staff and their cornbread tastes my mom's! I just stumbled upon this restaurant a couple of weeks ago and it was so delicious I came back the following week. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Restaurant has a clean, laid back atmosphere, was very busy with return customers with takeout orders and the gentlemen were very sweet to my mom.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I ordered the catfish during my first visit, ordered the lemon pepper chicken wings the second time I ate there. Their food has good portions and seasoned just right, I would recommend and I'll be back real soon!!

My favorite part is the creative ice cream flavors. Where else can you find cantaloupe or Old Bay ice cream? And they're delicious too! I went with friends on a quiet Thursday night. The interior is bright, spacious, and funky! I love the creative decorations. They had about 10 ice cream flavors available. I had to try a couple because they were so unique! Baklava, saffron, old bay, cantaloupe, and more! They had classics as well like chocolate and mint. A single scoop was $6 and was a good size. I got the baklava and WOW. I'm a huge baklava fan and this was incredible. I don't know how they mixed real, delicious chunks of baklava in the honey ice cream without it getting soggy or mushy, but they did and it was amazing! A friend got their dark chocolate and it might be the best chocolate ice cream I've ever had- I'm look at you Ben and Jerry! Some other nice touches- the spoons change color with different temperatures! So fun to watch your spoon change when it sits in the ice cream. They were also selling shirts to support the local elementary school. They have new flavors each season, so make sure you come in and try more! I can't wait to see what else they make!

They're located on Georgia right next to Denizens, and It's kind of in the cut and hard to see (well it was for me). If you're coming in from East-West Highway (pro tip: don't if you're driving, the parking there is restricted and they tow) you have to walk down stairs between the 1830 building and Denizens to find it. They allow one party in the building at a time. My boys and I went in and the young man immediately asked if we were just using the restroom or also getting ice cream-- I doubt they have public restrooms but I was on a trot after 3 hours out-- and when he realized we were getting ice cream, he didn't allow anyone in until we came out of the bathroom, ordered and left. Very safe. Their ice cream is clean, delicious, and their flavors are unique. I tried honey lavender and It was SOOO good until the very end ( I ate a bit of lavender and didn't taste anything else til I was done). The boys' strawberry ice cream was delicious and NOT pink- we avoid red dyes so this was exactly what we were looking for. The sugar cones are just the right size for the small children and they don't overstuff the cones a la Brusters and Ben and Jerry's. These are just right in size and price for kids. They didn't have a "kids cone" option per se (but I didn't ask) we just did a single scoop. That's one thing I'd like- a cake cone (smaller) with a kid sized scoop. As ir was, I got a scoop and a half helping the 3 year old finish. The 6 year old inhaled it in 2 minutes so it's just about right! Overall it's close to home, easy to get to once you know it's there and had great service plus AWESOME ice cream. I cannot wait to try the ginger, coconut, and wild blueberry! Lo

Interested in some super premium ice cream (aka ultra premium at this business)? Super premium,…read morepremium, standard, and economy are marketing terms used by ice cream makers. The FDA rules (in general) for calling a frozen dairy product ice cream are: 1) it must have at least 10% dairy milkfat. 2) it must weigh at least 4.5 lbs per gallon. 3) the overrun cannot exceed 100%. Super means the ice cream has at least 15% milkfat and less than 50% overun. Each ice cream company has their own definition, but they are similar. Overrun is the percentage of air in the ice cream compared to the starting materials. E.g. If you start with 1 quart of ice cream ingredients and mix it until it expands to 2 quarts, you will have 100% overrun. More milkfat and less overrun makes ice cream thicker, richer, creamier, and smoother. So, my wife and I came here to try their super premium ice cream and sorbet. They have 17% milkfat in their ice cream. We sampled 5 items and bought 4. 1) Pumpkin milkshake It tasted like pumpkin pie with cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. No noticeable clove flavor, which was fine with me. It was thick, creamy, and rich while still being easy to drink through a straw. It had a smooth sweetness that was just right. A great milkshake if you love pumpkin pie! The pumpkin ice cream was smooth, rich, and creamy with a great pumpkin pie flavor. It was the best tasting out of the 5 we tried. That's why we picked it for the milkshake. 2) Peanut Butter It had a strong roasted peanut flavor with a moderate sweetness level. The flavor was excellent, but the texture was not right. The ice cream had ice crystals throughout, not just the surface. I hope this was a production error and not the norm. Iciness is not acceptable at $9.25 per pint. 3) Gingersnap It had finely crushed gingersnap cookies in it. It tasted like gingersnap cookies with a strong ginger flavor. It was smooth, rich, and creamy. There were 2 problems: it melted very quickly and the ginger flavor was too strong. Less ginger and a touch more molasses would have made it great tasting. Ironically, molasses makes ice cream softer and melt faster. My photo shows the amount of melting that occurred in less than a minute after scooping it out of the container. I can imagine the mess on a hot day while eating this from a cone. You have to eat this very quickly if you don't want to drink it. This is inconsiderate to the customer. 4) Mango sorbet This had a natural mango flavor with a good amount of sweetness, but not too much. There were bits of mango in it which added some tanginess. It was thick and smooth with no iciness. This was fruity and refreshing! The service was informative, helpful, and friendly. They let you sample as many as you like. There were only 12 flavors available on our visit. They usually have more, but supplies had not been delivered. There are 2 freezers with pints of ice cream and sorbet for sale. The store was clean. They had 7 tables with chairs and counter seating. There are no restrooms for customers. I found the sorbet to be one of the best around DC. Some of the ice cream was disappointing in either taste or texture. The iciness in the peanut butter ice cream was probably due to a mistake that was made during the production. They need to check each batch of ice cream before release. The incredibly rapid melting of the Gingersnap ice cream will turn people off. That's easily fixable. Taste is subjective. I just think it's better to have less ginger as opposed to more. The pumpkin ice cream was an excellent example of super premium ice cream. We will return to try other flavors and give the peanut butter ice cream another try.

I recently picked up a small Lemon cake and a Strawberry cake from Morning My Day in Silver Spring…read more I was expecting a decent dessert; I wasn't expecting to be reminded that most other bakeries have been lying to us for years. The first bite was a bit of a shock to the system. It's one of those rare "Ratatouille moments" where a flavor profile manages to bridge the gap between Maryland and the legendary sponge cakes of Phoenix Bakery in LA. It's a bit of a trick, really--making something taste like a childhood memory without being cloying about it. The Breakdown: * The Sponge: It's exceptionally light. Biting into it is less like eating a dense dessert and more like biting into a sweetened, high-end pillow. It's airy, delicate, and possesses the kind of structural integrity that only a professional (or a wizard) could manage. * The Icing: A triumph of restraint. Instead of the usual sugary plaster one finds elsewhere, this is a light, white cream. It's sweet enough to let you know it's there, but it doesn't try to dominate the conversation. It's icing with a bit of dignity. * The Verdict: This is how cake ought to be. It's exquisite, technically brilliant, and far too easy to eat in a single sitting. If you appreciate a dessert that relies on craft rather than a massive dose of corn syrup, do yourself a favor and stop by. It's a legit bit of baking excellence right here in Silver Spring

I got the ube twist and melon pan. The ube twist was really delicious -- I'd highly recommend it. The melon pan was disappointing; I expect a crunchy cookie crust on melon pan and this one was sticky and soft. The bread itself was super plush and soft and amazing, so it would be great if they could improve upon it with a crunchier cookie crust. The bread items were $3-4 each, so not the cheapest, but I was happy to support a local Asian bakery.
