Possibly the best cake I have ever had! Do not miss this place! It is located inside Kevin's gas station...

    The pastry shelf of yummy-ness.

I was a little taken-a-back by its location in the Citgo convenience store but don't let that keep you from going in. They are well stocked with many yummy choices. We stopped by at 10:00 for a breakfast-on-the-go and tried the sausage, egg, mayo sandwich with and without cheese and they were devoured by the crew. We also tried the chocolate muffin which was more like a cupcake without frosting, but hey, if it's labeled as a muffin it's healthy. The scones were tasty, but a little "cakey". We got 2 chocolate chip cookies, an assortment of muffins (chocolate, cranberry orange, blueberry, and sweet potato), and scones (blueberry, apple cinnamon). We didn't try any of the "fresh squeezed" drinks but saw the press ready to squeeze and the famous 12 layer cake looked very tempting but it would have been too messy for the car ride. Lots of locals seem to know this is the place to go for good food to go , so you should too.

Cort and the 7 layer cake...

On the way to the Outer Bank our son mentioned that had to try the 7 layer cake at Cindy's. I was surprised to find out it was located in a gas station on HWY 158. We tried the pumkin n cream, pecan, lemon, and 7 layer cakes. All were delicious. How do they make the 7 layers so thin? I really wanted a slice of the coconut custard pie they had. It looked sooo good, but they didnt have slices available that day... We will definitely stop over again on the way to OBX.

    12 Layer Cake!

Cindy's Kitchen is one of the traditional stopovers that we make either entering or leaving the Outer Banks. I cannot pass up the opportunity to pick up a slice of her famous 12 Layer Cake. It has a perfect crumb and the chocolate icing on each layer is just enough that it doesn't become cloyingly sweet. The bakery has a wide selection of freshly made goods that its sure to please any sweet tooth. One quick tip for those who are looking for the mecca of all good things baked; it is located inside the gas station. Other things to consider for the long haul back home include their caramel cake, the egg salad, chicken salad, or pimento cheese sandwiches. If you need that burst of energy consider picking up some southern sweet tea.

    Cindy we love you!!!!

We stopped here randomly last Spring Break and the cakes we sampled were SOOO GOOD we can't wait to go back this weekend on the way to Kill Devil Hills. Definitely worth a stop, lots of yummy cakes to choose from and you can just get a slice so you can try everything!!!

    Made with love! :)

The sweet potato biscuits are so good. They did overcharge us though, which was a hassle to fix. Great food, overall.

We tried burnt ends, pulled pork, pulled brisket, French fries, sweet potato casserole, Mac and cheese, baked beans, hot dog, hush puppies, and potato salad. Every single meat and side was phenomenal. Perfect pricing, perfect portions. Service was awesome and they were kind and friendly. Building is older, but it adds to the small town bbq ambiance. Zero complaints. We will be back and highly recommend it!

Not much to talk about positively at Currituck BBQ as most things are either bland or just bad…read more The pulled brisket is just a wet sloppy mess that has at least some flavor from some spices but no real smokiness or some fattiness. The same goes for the pulled pork but even less flavor with even less spices being used. To complement the bland meats you do have a variety of BBQ sauces to choose from. The original is absurdly sweet and the South Carolina style has some mustard flavor but the vinegar and sweetness just overpower. The best was the North Carolina style sauce with some spices added in there but the overt vinegar taste can overpower. The chicken is just a rotisserie chicken, no BBQ going on there and is just a waste of a dish. The ribs had some nice pull on them and had a good amount of meat on them but the original BBQ sauce is just so sweet you can't taste anything else. The sides might have been the best things there, and they were still average at best. The mac and cheese was deeply cheesy and flavorful, but the macaroni is overcooked. The sweet potato casserole was very sweet and full of nutmeg offering a nice dessert side. The fries and fried okra were both very average with little flavor or seasoning. The coleslaw was a bit too sweet for me but it wasn't overpowering like most of the dishes. The potato salad is too sweet and had no other flavors. One of the most offensive things is the buns. The buns are some of the worst you can get, making the meal even worse. They almost taste like nothing. Overall horrible food and some of the worst BBQ I've ever had.

Pass the Salt is a cute little country cafe operated by the sweetest people!…read more It deserves more than a 5 star rating. This was our second visit. Our family of 5 dropped by in the early afternoon on a Wednesday. We were warmly greeted, seated and made to feel comfortable and at home. The decor is simple and cute. Several tables are constructed of old doors, decorated and covered with glass. Many other artistic and creative decorative touches highlight this cute cafe. There is a good selection of beer, wine and specialty drinks as well as a great assortment of soft drinks. The menu has a wide selection of apps, sandwiches and salads (all unique and intriguing) I am a guy who enjoys a great burger from the great selection. I ordered the "Double Ringer Burger" and added bacon. I just found the best burger that I ever had! Two perfectly seasoned burgers were seared on both sides and perfectly pink in the middle. They were served on a tasty brioche bun with three deep fried onion rings and highlighted with a special sauce. All of the selections chosen by our group earned great reviews from my family. Portions are generous and served with a choice of sides. The house-made desserts sound delicious, but none of us had room to partake. Pass The Salt is well worth the drive from Sandbridge (1 hour).

As you walk in you note the feel of it being a converted diner made to look like a country place. You grab your own menu, seat yourself, and walk up to the bar/register when ready to order. If the first time, you need a minute to get your bearings. Food ordered (3% fee is not using the cash "discount" FYI, pretty common around here and absurd given these OBX prices). Drinks are self serve. Some coke products and excellent tea. This was the end of breakfast around 10:30/11, so it was empty. Service was pretty quick. (they bring it to the table). I thought the breakfast pricing was fair. Shrimp and grits for $12, etc. Especially for the portion sizes. Two things I didn't care for. -The ceilling tiles were crazy dirty and stained and the flor light bulbs were uncovered. -The shrimp and grits needs a re-do. It's huge, with a base of grits, ladels of bacon gravy, and about 5 shrimp and cheddar cheese. It's more like a shrimp, grits, gravy, cheese casserole. I would have much rather had a base of grits, the gravy scooped in the middle with shrimp stuck in it, and topped with cheese. Even with all that you'd think there would be flavor. It was kind of bland minus the occasionally greasy/burnt bacon piece. Also, the shrimp were flavorful but over-cooked and tail on, which is traditional--but in the casserole were a pain in the butt to get the tail off/cut. I know they can do good flavors and plates. My spouse's chicken biscut...omg the hand-breaded chicken was fantastic! My son's baked apples were to die for. You Philly visitors will be happy to see scrapples on the menu - yuck. All in, I would repeat and stick to chicken and the chicken coop.
