tl;dr: stick with a chicken dish and you will be very happy. Interesting little place, connected to a gas station. As you walk in you note the feel of it being a converted diner made to look like a country place. You grab your own menu, seat yourself, and walk up to the bar/register when ready to order. If the first time, you need a minute to get your bearings. Food ordered (3% fee is not using the cash "discount" FYI, pretty common around here and absurd given these OBX prices). Drinks are self serve. Some coke products and excellent tea. This was the end of breakfast around 10:30/11, so it was empty. Service was pretty quick. (they bring it to the table). I thought the breakfast pricing was fair. Shrimp and grits for $12, etc. Especially for the portion sizes. Two things I didn't care for. -The ceilling tiles were crazy dirty and stained and the flor light bulbs were uncovered. -The shrimp and grits needs a re-do. It's huge, with a base of grits, ladels of bacon gravy, and about 5 shrimp and cheddar cheese. It's more like a shrimp, grits, gravy, cheese casserole. I would have much rather had a base of grits, the gravy scooped in the middle with shrimp stuck in it, and topped with cheese. Even with all that you'd think there would be flavor. It was kind of bland minus the occasionally greasy/burnt bacon piece. Also, the shrimp were flavorful but over-cooked and tail on, which is traditional--but in the casserole were a pain in the butt to get the tail off/cut. I know they can do good flavors and plates. My spouse's chicken biscut...omg the hand-breaded chicken was fantastic! My son's baked apples were to die for. You Philly visitors will be happy to see scrapples on the menu - yuck. We stopped here for breakfast on our way home from the beach. While it is attached to a gas station you would never know! There is a nice patio and the inside is so cute and rustic! This is an order at the counter place but the staff was patient with our large group. The food was sooooooo good! The grits were the best grits I have ever had. Stopped in and just wanted some quick chicken fingers to go for the kids. Ordered 6 chicken fingers and was charged over $28. Clarified this and stated that I did not want a meal, just chicken. Their biscuits are worth the hype as well. My only complaint would be there seems to be a lot of bugs inside of the restaurant. Was good....until it wasn't. Chicken Coop was our staple during the off-season as it became one of the few restaurants still operating during those months. This year the owners purchased another restaurant, and slowly began cutting the hours of the Chicken Coop. Several times we drove to the restaurant, only to find it closed - even though we were there during the advertised hours of operation. The restaurant was purchased late spring, and sadly the new owners kept the very restricted hours of operation, with the difference of not even posting the new hours. So it was a guess as to whether they'd be open or not. The last time we ate there we asked what days they'd be open, and the reply was they weren't sure. Then they tried to steer us to another restaurant, which is a high-end establishment. A total opposite of the down-home food of the Chicken Coop. Discovered later that restaurant is also their's, which really left us with a bad impression of the new owners. read more

On our next trip following Erica's skepticism below, we drove back to the 'Chicken Coop Country Diner' and verified that this, indeed, is the place that we had visited twice in 2022. I even mailed Erica a postcard at the time to let her know. Thus, our 2022 review accurately reflects our experiences at 814 Ocean Trail, Corolla, NC 27927 (blue and yellow building). Plus, I recognize Erica's husband from her Yelp profile picture. He was the chef on duty both times we visited the restaurant. I particularly remember him because he was quite talkative to regular patrons and some sort of business associate who was there visiting the restaurant during our second time there. They were discussing future business planning strategies. The point is we had a mostly good experience on our first visit and a bad experience on the second visit. For example, my partner's chili was so cold that the cheddar cheese on top of it did not melt in the least. Erica and her chef husband were both on site during our first visit. During our second visit, the chef husband was on site but Erica was not. We would not have returned for a second visit if we had not liked our first visit. I had been craving biscuits on this trip, so I was glad that we were able to make a stop here! I tried the biscuits and gravy, which also came with eggs, grits, and a side of spinach. The biscuits were fluffy, but I thought the gravy and grits were a bit too salty for me. You could definitely split this dish between two people since it's pretty heavy. If I came back, I would probably try one of their biscuit sandwiches instead. I hustled my way down there like a savage. Once I arrived my order was ready. She showed me my order and I thought I was in heaven. Our group decided we should just have nice salad for dinner so my buddy and I headed to food lion to get some ingredients. I tossed out the idea that we should pick up some chicken, my buddy didn't need any convincing. No regrets. Kid at the counter seemed new, but he was doing his best to be helpful. Women running the kitchen was working hard. Chicken came out fast. And our group tore through it, ot was very good. My buddies wife said it was the best fried chicken she ever had. We think she maybe throws that word around too loosely, but this is definitely a good spot to grab some chicken. We didn't order any sides so no comment. Found another little hidden gem in Corolla - just by fluke too. Went to Harris Teeter around 6PM (on a Monday) to try and find a quick and easy dinner meal to bring home. Turned right around when I saw the self-check line literally wrapped around past the wine section back to the deli counter! Craziness! I remembered seeing this fried chicken place while gassing up at OB Gas (next to Ace Hardware, across the street from the Food Lion shopping center) so headed up that way. Walking inside, I was greeted by the mom and pop of this mom-and-pop shop! Super nice and friendly. I chatted them up and learned this is a fairly new restaurant that - get this - opened during the pandemic in September! Brave souls they are! He was laid off from being a long time head chef at a local fine dining establishment because of the pandemic and decided to open his own joint to make and serve the types of food HE loves best - down home Southern cooking. Gotta love this: when I asked why they close at 7 and aren't open through the evening to catch the dinner crowds, his reply was: "we have a family to take care of and want to be home for the kids." (Insert heart emoji here) I ordered a simple 2-piece fried chicken combo to go. It included a choice of side (I got fries), biscuit and drink. It was ready in a second. When I got home and opened the box, the chicken was still piping hot from the fryer, LOADS of golden, crunchy coating on the pieces and juicy meat inside. DELICIOUS. Nice portion size of fries and a homemade biscuit. Price was way reasonable for what I got. It was exactly what I was looking for: fast service, super quick in and out for carryout orders, convenient location in Corolla with plenty of parking, good value, big portion sizes, super reasonable prices and SERIOUSLY GOOD DOWN HOME SOUTHERN FRIED CHICKEN. And - come on now - WHO DOESN'T LIKE FINGER LICKIN' GOOD FRIED CHICKEN at the beach?! Show this little mom and pop shop some love. You might be skeptical driving up to or seeing this place in the parking lot of a gas-and-go but, I'm telling you, this is a true foodie find - especially in a sea of Corolla restaurants with mile long waits and slow-as-molasses service. (I also note in reading others' reviews, that this place is a decent breakfast spot - will have to try that next time I'm in town). I still miss this place. It had been highly recommended while we visited OBX-Corolla. The first day we arrived we decided to go here to grab some lunch. Hidden behind a gas station, you don't expect much. Very casual place where you order and seat yourself. Hubby and I chose the Chix Breast & Wing Combo. I got mash potatoes and he got Fried Okra. A whole plate of Fried perfection. One guy walked up straight to the counter and ordered Chix Strips and Fries. I ordered that on my SECOND visit. Huge Strips of Chix and the fries were so good. I could only eat one and a half of another but finished the fries. We went AGAIN before we headed home and I ordered Chix & Waffles. I was not expecting this place to have Liege waffles. We were suprised to see all the rave reviews of this southern comfort food restaurant at a local gas station. So naturally, we had to try it. And we are so glad we did! We had a group of 5 adults, 2 tweens, and a toddler. The 16 pc fresh fried chicken meal, shrimp platter, & 6 pc tender meal were more than enough. They served us just before they closed and despite having worked a full and busy day, we still feel like we got 5 star service along with 5 star food. Definitely no room for desert tho. This small restaurant in a former fast food chain shop is a hidden gem in the resort town of Corolla. The food is amazing and the prices are ridiculously low. Unfortunately, we were disappointed this year. We visit for 2 weeks in July and 1 in August. On multiple occasions that they were supposed to be open they were closed or closed early. I understand things happen but at least update on your social media. For the most part the food is still the same. On a few meals we felt were a little different/lacking. The customer service is not good. The staff is not friendly, that is from 5 visits in those 3 weeks. Even my teenagers noticed. No music, there used to be funny family friendly videos on the tv, nothing. I hope the new owners make some improvements. We will try one more time next year and decide if we will go back. I hope so as this became my son's favorite place to go. We kept hoping on each visit this year that it was just an off day but after 5 visits.......... read more
