Circulo Espanol is a Spanish cultural center but also has a restaurant. From the outside, you wouldn't know it though. I lived around the area for years and never knew about this place. The restaurant is only open from Thursday to Sunday. The food was great and the prices are reasonable. The service was very friendly. It was very quiet when we went. People come with their families since it's like a community center. Complimentary bread and butter is provided. We had the garlic shrimp which was phenomenal! Definitely scoop up that garlic and put it on the bread! The paella was also very good and had plenty of shellfish. read more

Do you speak Spanish? If not, you might want to bring a translator! My dad ordered a house salad with shrimp for appetizer & a Shrimp with Garlic Sauce for the main. They didn't bring any salad, And the shrimp they brought was an appetizer. Other than that, everything was fine, and the food was AWESOME. The flavor will bring you back if you like this kind of food. I found this place on yelp because my dad likes paella and I know he has not had a good one in a while. This restaurant is more of a party hall than a restaurant but the service was extremely friendly and the food was delicious. The restaurant opens at 12 and that's when I made the reservation so there was literally no one there except us. However, I half hour in some elderly people came in and took to two tables to play dominoes. What's that about? I'm guessing it is sort of a community place which is nice. I had a free glass of wine with a yelp check-in but the manager was kind enough to offer everyone a glass. I felt bad wasting it because we aren't really wine drinkers and no one drank it. In hindsight, I should've just declined but it was difficult to communicate with our waitress because her English wasn't that great. She was attentive an extremely nice but mostly we had to speak with the manager in regards to the menu items. He was extremely friendly and and all-around good manager, the kind that makes you feel comfortable and welcome. The paellas were made to order and executed extremely well. My seafood stew was delicious, perfectly cooked plump clams and mussels and the broth... the broth I can drink right out of the bowl. Perfectly seasoned, garlicky, buttery but not too oily. They didn't skimp on the seafood either. We pretty much ate a little more than half our entrées and took the rest home for dinner. If I ever needed a place to throw a small party, I think this is a great place. Very spacious and the prices extremely reasonable. I'll definitely be back for the seafood stew again! read more

This is a wonderful cultural gem. The atmosphere reminded me of my trip to Spain three years ago. My friends and I were the only non-Spanish guests there, but it was fun. We tried different tapas - chorizo, patas bravas, jamon-cheese plate and octopus with complimentary bread and washed it all down with red sangria. All the tapas were yummy. We also had the seafood paella. Big portions at fair prices. It was our friend's bday, so we did a Yelp check in for a free glass of wine for the bday celebrant, and our server actually gave each of us a complimentary glass of wine. Our server also gave us a free after dinner drink, which It tasted like Irish bailey. I don't know if they regularly serve that drink after dinner, but it was a nice gesture. As another yelper mentioned, don't be alarmed by the Royal Order of Moose plaque! I've been coming to Circulo Español for years and it's the most authentic Spanish experience you'll get outside of the Iberian peninsula. Fancy? No. Impressive? Doubtful. Comforting? Incontestably! From the moment you walk in through the massive old wooden doors to the black and white tile floor, lit by vintage chandeliers, you feel like you could be at any neighborhood bar in Spain. Look over your shoulder to the left. Is that a portrait of the king of Spain? You've come to right place. The decor is based on things that would be pleasing to an old Spanish man. Wooden paneling and replicas of the world cup trophy are used unironically. This is not for hipsters. This is for serious. Once you move past the watchful gaze of the king, you enter the bar area. Here you can see medium-old Spanish guys drinking at the bar and legit-old Spanish guys wearing berets at the tables playing cards or dominoes. At the bar, order some tapas and watch a football match on one of the two giant televisions. If there isn't a match, there will probably be a Spanish news station. Eavesdrop if you can on the dudes arguing about politics/football. To the left of the bar there's a large dining room area. Go here if you want to enjoy a full meal on a proper table with white tablecloth. Don't worry! There's a ginormous projector so you won't miss a single second of the football match. My only complaints: 1. Sometimes there are special events like parties, tango, famous musicians and dancers from Spain but they're pretty bad about publicizing that! 2. They no longer have Estrella Galicia, the best Spanish beer. You have to settle for Estrella Damn. The mediocre Spanish beer selection is just embarrassing for a SPANISH bar! 3. Sometime in my early teens they redecorated. Now there's some very ugly Cape Cod wallpaper in the bar (how very Spanish?) and a bunch of cool Spanish memorabilia is no longer displayed. While the food is not entirely authentic, the ambiance most certainly is, and I'm a fan! I came here as part of a large group for dinner Saturday night, and we sampled everything from various tapas to fideua. Among my favorite dishes were the pulpo a la Gallega, the tortilla de patatas, and the arroz con leche. Also, the seemingly unlimited bottles of red wine that flowed to the table were both incredibly inexpensive and good. Furthermore, the service was at once accommodating, friendly, and efficient, and made everyone feel welcome. I highly recommend stopping by if you want to experience Spain circa 1988. read more

Came here to watch the Euro games. Great atmosphere, the crowd was fired up. They have tapas which were okay except for the fact they ran out of the one dish we really wanted, can't blame them for that. The tapas we did have, the pork, spanish tortilla and olives were all great. They also have Estrella Galicia which is a Spanish beer you don't find many other places outside the Iberian Peninsula. There is a bar in the front and a main dining room inside. They apparently also do dancing and other events. It's really a hidden gem, it's right off of Steinway and Broadway and no one seems to know about it. You enter through 41st street. Don't be turned away by the "Royal Order of the Moose" sign. We are always looking for Spanish places to try and I had seen this place time and time again pop up on Yelp and Google so we decided to give it a go today and we were NOT disappointed​! The food was incredible, very authentic! We have been to Spain multiple times and it tastes and feels like a local tapas bar. It's a very family oriented place. Families go there to watch games, social gatherings, play cards, etc. I went with Spaniards and they explained to me that the dishes are very homestyle food. I have since been to every performance of the American Bolero Company at Centro Espanol, and am amazed at how the shows outdo previous performances each and every time! They step up with more music, different dances and dancers, costumes... wow - just can't find any more superlatives to convey my devotion (!) to this company. Shows are not as regular as they were the first year. Went to one on Dec 5th of 2010 and going to the next one on March 5th. Check ambolero.com for updates. We have eaten in the dining room before every performance, and am glad to report that we've noticed a marked improvement in the service. The star of the show, the food, remains remarkable. I love the free chupito (shot) they offer after your meal. I come to eat here more frequently than I used to since they reopen during Covid times.
