A cool casual place to grab a bite to eat while enjoying some cider and hanging out with friends. Since it was a Thursday, they offered hot dogs for $6 each and it came with a canned cider of your choice, a pretty good value. We got a couple chili dogs and a large Poutine to share. Overall the food was very good, The hot dogs had a nice snap to them, the bun was nicely toasted, and the chili was hearty. The Poutine was also very good, portion size was generous and gravy was well seasoned. I did feel that they skimped on the cheese and could have added more. The cider, as usual, are always delicious and well made. Service is very casual but friendly. They have their own parking lot which makes it really convenient to find parking. read more

GO HERE NOW. Do not pass go, but do collect the $200 you will want to spend here. Our recent stop at this delicious cidery was the result of a Yelp search while we were at the nearby Magic Hat brewery on a pit stop between Montreal and Connecticut. Boy am I glad that we bothered to take the time to find someplace delicious for some food and beverages. We stopped in around 3 pm on a Friday afternoon and were the only patrons which suited as fine as we had our two month old baby in tow. Hungry as we were, we were delighted to find that the burgers were as delicious as they sounded on the menu. Equally delicious were the multiple ciders we sampled as part of the flights. My husband and I departed Citizen Cider as new fans with cans and bottles. We will be enjoying these concoctions until we run out and will keep our eyes open for their products at our local liquor stores. read more

For those of you that are reading this review that know me, either via Yelp or in real life (...what's that? Ha!), y'all know one thing about me: I can not drink beer. Not even a drop. It's been something I've discussed in previous reviews when I get all excited about an establishment's cider selection. I have this freak allergy, specifically, to Brewer's Yeast. Common bread yeast? No problem. Champagne yeast? No problem. Brewer's Yeast? Well...I'll spare you the details. Haaa. Due to this, I have become quite the connoisseur of hard ciders over the past seven or so years, and DAMN am I picky about them. I came to discover Citizen Cider for the first time at one of my favorite bars in NYC, Broadway Dive. They almost always have one of their types on tap (usually the Dirty Mayor), and while traveling to visit my parents in Connecticut, I have found bottles of Citizen Cider (various varieties) at Guido's Marketplace in Great Barrington, MA. This cider brand is definitely one of my favorites! While on a small vacation to the Lake George area, I convinced the beau to take a day trip to Burlington with me, with a visit to the tasting room squarely on my list of things to do. Basically, it was nonnegotiable. Ha! Upon arrival (and after driving around a bit for parking, admittedly; their parking area is SMALL and shared with other businesses), we walked up the stairs to an open and airy drinking haven; about a dozen different ciders were on tap. I really wanted to do a flight, but since I was driving, I was a good girl and settled for one drink. The beau and I, respectively ordered the B-Cider and Brosé; they're seasonal and we didn't come this far to try something we've had before! Needless to say, both ciders were delicious! We conversed with the bartender for a while; I wish I remembered her name, but she lived in Astoria so we waxed about that neighborhood for a little while. She was great! Adjacent to the bar is a large area with dozens upon dozens of bottles of cider for sail. *cue heavenly choir of angels* Though I really wanted to buy a bottle of Brosé, I opted for a bottle of The American; I've never had it and the combination of apples and cranberries seems like a good cider to break open in a few months when autumn is in full swing. Do you love cider? Do you want to try 10+ funky funky ciders? They're very light, refreshing ciders- some were almost clear! Some were not to my taste but they had so many options that you'd find one you like. Lots of hoppy options and a rose. They have a great tasting room in a not as pretty neighborhood (though very safe. This is Burlington, it's just not picturesque downtown). They're also close to two other breweries for tons of afternoon fun. We had the ginger cider in cans around town during our weekend in VT and it's definitely my favorite of their offering. read more

Citizen Cider is my absolutely favorite cider in all the land. And I consider myself a cider expert. Whenever I'm up in VT, I try to fit in a visit to the brewery to check out any new offerings they may have, grab a growler, and taste their yummy food too. It's tough to impress anyone with food in Vermont. They take food very seriously. One thing that makes Citizen Cider unique is that they cater to special dietary needs. I suppose when your drink if GF and people drink it because of that, it makes sense that you should offer good that fits the bill. They have a pretty standard menu of burgers, fries, wings, and even corn dogs (which they can make GF, yum) but everything is made in a somewhat unique fashion. It's nothing extraordinary, but there's definitely something for everyone on the menu. The only reason for 4 stars is that the service is a little tough to navigate. They do have table service, but it gets a little crowded and you might end up waiting a while. I'd suggest eating at the bar if you're going to eat. Nevertheless, I love their cider, and the food is pretty darn good. I would highly suggest visiting the brewery if you're in Burlington. Cider (5/5): We ordered two flights of five ciders each for $14 total, which allowed us to try everything on the menu. Not surprisingly, my favorites were the ones that were fruity and not at all beer-y: the UP, Plum Intended, American, and Dirty Mayor. The specific fruit notes were totally discernible. I could drink any of those, and we later cooked with the UP and thought it was great in that context, too. Food (4/5): The poutine fries ($11) could serve at least 3 people. The fries were fresh and crispy. I thought the duck fat gravy had an interesting flavor. They were slathered in a cheese sauce with some cheese curds sprinkled around. I would order them again! The pretzel ($6) was warm and pretty sizable. We paid an extra $2 for some cider cheese dipping sauce, but it was served ice cold (like, condensation-on-the-metal-cup cold). We told the waitress, and she got it heated up. Kind of a quality control issue, I think. Service (1/5): Usually I don't get bent out of shape about service, but it was remarkably bad. We seated ourselves and waited close to 10 minutes for anyone to greet us. No water was brought to the table, so I had to go up to the bar to ask for some. I also had to get silverware for our table from the bar. The waitress didn't check back in at all. During the cold cheese situation, she brought it back to our table and set it down without a word. It took forever to get the check, to the point that we pooled cash to make sure we didn't have to wait on a credit card. The place was also super cold; everyone was still wearing their winter coats and hats inside. Ultimately, I wanted to come here because while I don't like beer that much, I still want to have the brewery experience sometimes. I would definitely purchase their cider again. I might dine in, although the environment was a little too-cool-for-school for me. read more

This review is just for the poutine. Holy S**T. I've eaten my fair share of poutine, and tend to order it as an appetizer every time I spot it on a menu. We were originally going to skip this place in our brewery crawl since our group wasn't too keen on cider, but someone suggested we go just for food. Oh Citizen Cider Poutine, how I could write a poem about you. But I wont. The fries: PERFECT. Slightly darker than golden brown with a crispy outside and soft inside. Seasoned with salt and rosemary. Even the fries without the other toppings were amazing. The cheese curds: Excellent. They were added right before the hot gravy, so in some parts they were still whole with texture, but in other spots they had merged with the gravy. To me, that is what poutine is all about. DAT GRAVY. I don't know what they put in it, but I want it to replace my morning coffee. It's flavorful and a perfect compliment their fries. Not too salty or overpowering, and they put a TON on. Every French fry has a nice gravy sweater. Seriously though, you don't need to go there and drink, just eat the amazing poutine. read more

This is a cool spot. I was in Burlington with my in-laws and my brother in law's girlfriend has a friend who works here. She met us here and gave us an unofficial tour of the brewery, which was cool. On my last visit to Burlington I stopped by Citizen Cider for some pre-dinner drinks. The location of the outdoor seating was a bit odd overlooking a parking lot, but we were grateful to sit outside on a hot day. Great gluten-free options. Dedicated fryer for the french fries, so there's little risk of cross-contamination. The gluten-free buns are fine, not great, but that's fine since it's just for holding together everything. The new smash burger is great and is better than any of their previous burger options. You can get Citizens Cider in lots of places these days, but it's hard to match the atmosphere of their Pine Street location. I had only been there in the summer, which was awesome. The open air, free flowing environment with the inside connecting to the patios was great. It felt like a big party. The long tables mean you mix with other groups and meet new people easily. Last week, I decided it was time to check out their winter vibe. I met up with a friend and we loved it! The place was fun, upbeat & festive. It was our first time there and she was giving us attitude while asking her about all the ciders they have to offer. After we paid the bill I paid on my card and tipped in cash. In my humble opinion Citizen makes the best cider in the world right now. I may be biased since they started in my hometown, but whatever. I think I might actually like all their ciders and I must have tried at least 15 and possibly more over my multiple visits. I even like their sweeter ciders and I hate sweet hard cider. Full Nelson is my favorite (probably because its hopped). As sad as I was when they left Essex for the south end, I must admit it worked out well. Their taproom is one of the best at any brewery/cidery I've visited, and I've been to around 130. There's a nice deck and big garage doors facing west so you can soak up those legendary Burlington sunsets. The taproom is smartly furbished with chunky wood group tables and just the right amount of lighting. The food is good as well, which is surprising since many bars/breweries only sell food because they are legally required to if they want to sell full pours. I've had the fries and the chicken sub. The sub is good, but the fries are world class and now come with a nice garlic aioli. Citizen is super nice to non-cider lovers as they maintain a full bar and several local beer options, many of which are brewed on this very street. read more

I started drinking Citizen Cider from my local packy in RI & MA. When I went to Burlington for a night I was super psyched to realize they were out of VT!! We went there and sat at the bar. Such an awesome vibe. This cider is not the typical. They do a great job, not to sweet super well balanced and craft! I had a flight and everything was amazing. It was a Thursday night and my boyfriend got a can and a dog for 5 Bucks! He had a Jalapeño Pineapple Dog and I had a couple bites (we had already eaten, but 5 bucks! Lol) it's was amazing. I loved it that they were cranking a live Prince concert which added to the colness and the funk of the environment. It was during a three day snowy blizzard and we came towards the end of the day. ***EDIT*** I went back to Citizen Cider on a different day, not only with my walker, but another disabled friend and some 'normals'. The poutine was really good, dont be afraid to ambush your Quebecois buddies with our curds, CC has your back. The food was good, a decent value, the service courteous and prompt and unlike my previous visit, there was enough room for my cripple wagon. So this is why they are NOT getting a '5' and probably never will. Finding the restaurant from the elevator is an adventure. Finding the elevator from the restaurant is fun too. Finding where the handicapped entrance is and how it connects to the elevator is fun. There are NO signs to help you in this adventure, a deplorable oversight for an otherwise acceptable restaurant. Being disabled sucks and if my money, patronage and good will arent enough to make Citizen Cider want to make my visit less of a PITA by getting their 'handicapped accessible' sh!t in order, then there is no reason for me to regard them with anything more than reciprocal contempt. ***End EDIT*** Havent had a chance to eat there yet, so this review reflects my difficulties as a crippled vet just trying to get into the restaurant. There was no way to get in other than climbing steep steps and no indication of a handicapped entrance. Once I got upstairs, the wait staff completely ignored me for ~5 mins before someone finally asked me if I needed something. Finally, someone helped me find the elevator, but it was on me to find how that connected with the outside. By the time I got my walked upstairs, the restaurant was full-ish and no one, not staff or patrons gave a damn about making things possible for me. Burlington may not be racist, but if you are older (50+) and/or a cripple, you are invisible to the insensitive and self absorbed people (and businesses) here. Have a great day! read more

We did a cider tasting flight. The cider was pretty good, and the place looked great and had really nice outdoor seating.....but the music ruined the experience for us. Totally out of tune with the chill, classy space we were in, the speakers blasted heavy death metal music the entire time we were there. Even worse...at the end of each song, it would begin playing a nicer song....then, after ten seconds or so, back to the heavy death metal. I felt like we were being hazed. Unfortunately, we couldn't wait to get out of there. I probably should have asked them to change the music....I imagine the wait staff was suffering, too. We would go back, but I'll call ahead and ask about the playlist of the day first. read more

I came to Citizen Cider with my wife and mom after spending the day visiting Burlington. We arrived around 4pm and the place was packed. Cider (5/5): The cider is fantastic. We ordered two flights of five samples allowing us to try all of the ciders they had on tap. Unified Press, Plum Intended, The Americran, and The Dirty Mayor we universally agreed were excellent. The Wit's Up and the Citizen Cellar: Second Pour we left unfinished and mostly untouched. We ended up buying at least a bottle or two of each of our favorites. Food (4/5): We ordered Poutine fries and their soft pretzels. The fries were great. The pretzels were also quite good. The cider cheese they were served with was ice cold. We ended up having to ask to have it warmed up. They were unsure about whether it was intended to be cold, but as the consumer trying it both warm and cold I can definitely verify it should have been heated. This was plenty of food for three people, more than enough really but we still ate it all. Service (2/5): We waited for about 15 minutes before our server came to take our order (at the onset this place was very busy, by the end of our visit the place only had a few people left in the tasting room). The server stopped by twice after this. Once to deliver our drinks and a couple minutes later to deliver our food. They never stopped back to see if we wanted more of anything. We sought someone out at the bar to have the cheese dip heated up and again had to track someone down to get our check. Space (3/5): I liked the space. There's a bar, a few communal tables and a few high top tables around the outside of the room. When we walked in the room was full of people, but they turned off the heat at some point I think to clear the room. The few remaining people were all wearing hats and their winter coats by the time we left. I'd definitely come back to pick up cider from Citizen Cider the next time I'm in Burlington, but I probably wouldn't stick around unless I had ample time and the temperature outside was moderate. read more

Citizen cider used to be my favorite Vermont brew. Today, April 28th, was my second time there (I was giving the poor service a second chance as the guys working seemed to be new) and it was even worse than before. First time- ordered a flight and a burger. The burger on the website looked fantastic and I was so excited. We got our flights and I was so disappointed with the sloppy presentation and inconsistent poor. I felt like I was getting less than what I paid for, I should have gotten a pint for a dollar less. As I drank my flight I realized I hadn't asked for my burger to be well done so I rushed to ask the waiter. I felt bad for not asking initially, but he assured me that it was fine. I got the burger minutes later and it looked NOTHING like the photo. It was still yummy but I was disappointed. Two new guys were incompetent but the guy training them was competent enough. Flash to today... Only the new guys working a busy night as it is Restaurant Week. We waited 15+ minutes for service before finally trying to flag them down. The one guy brushed me off, but it wasn't until the second guy walked past us that we finally walked out. Although I will continue to buy the dirty mayor from City Market, I will never go back again. UPDATE- the next day my friend who stayed to get a drink before leaving and meeting us at the new restaurants saw that they added $2 to his bill as a tip that he did not authorize when signing his bill. Not only is this inappropriate, it is STEALING. (If you leave your card overnight they are authorized to charge a tip when posted, but this was not the case) The two new young men, short dark hair and long dirty blonde hair, should be let go from Citizen Cider as they are unprofessional, incompetent, and thieves. read more

Really pleased with our light lunch here. The taco trio appetizer is definitely app sized, but the flavor of the sauce was amazing! We also ordered the soft pretzels with mustard...flavorful and kind of perfect. I got a flight and my husband got a pour...we enjoyed most offerings, and they had a good selection to take home, too.
